The bombing of Pearl Harbor set off a chain of events that included the race to beat German scientists to build the atomic bomb. A tiny hamlet tucked away in the southern Appalachians proved an unlikely linchpin to win the race. The Manhattan Project required the combination of four secret sites—Clinton Laboratories, Y-12, K-25, and S-50—75,000 workers, and the nation's finest scientists to create the Secret City, Oak Ridge. From the beginning, the effort was aided by the nearby University of Tennessee, which provided expertise to make the weapon possible. Following World War II, it was not clear what role this huge research and development program would play, but pioneering scientists and administrators were determined that one option—dismantling the whole thing—would not happen. Critical Connections chronicles how Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Y-12 National Security Complex, and their partners became outstanding examples of the military-industrial-educational complex from the Cold War to the present day. At the beginning of the 1950s, Oak Ridge became a flourishing, less-secret city, and the authors show how, decade by decade, ORNL became the source of major breakthroughs in physics, biology, computing, and other fields—and how these achievements required ever-closer connections with UT. By the mid-1990s, after many successful joint initiatives between UT and ORNL, UT was poised to compete to become the manager of ORNL. In 2000, UT-Battelle LLC won the bid from the Department of Energy: UT was charged with providing scientific direction and key personnel; its partner Battelle would oversee ORNL's operations and chart its technology direction. The authors highlight the scientific developments these connections have brought, from nanotechnology to nuclear fission, from cryogenic experiments on mice to the world's fastest supercomputer. O bagaço de cana-de-açúcar é um resíduo sólido fibroso obtido após o processamento da cana, utilizado na produção de açúcar e etanol. Nesse ramo de atividade, toneladas de bagaço são produzidas anualmente e despejadas inadequadamente, causando diversos impactos no meio ambiente. Logo, é fundamental a procura por novas técnicas e processos que forneçam um destino sustentável aos resíduos provenientes da cana-de-açúcar. Uma destas aplicações pode ser a produção de novos materiais, por meio da combinação com outros componentes, resultando em um material com propriedades adequadas ao emprego em determinado processo, a exemplo da adsorção. Neste contexto, o objetivo principal deste trabalho é a produção de compósitos adsorventes a partir da decomposição térmica do bagaço de cana e sais de ferro, que possam remover eficientemente o corante azul de metileno presente em meio aquoso. Visando à otimização das condições de obtenção dos adsorventes, foi empregado o planejamento experimental Box-Behnken (BBD), por meio do estudo das variáveis: (1) massa bagaço de cana/massa sal de ferro, (2) tipo de mistura bagaço de cana/sal de ferro, e (3) temperatura, sobre a resposta a ser obtida (capacidade de adsorção, qe) diante da realização dos testes de adsorção.

Nanomaterials have the potential to shift the paradigm for the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, especially neoplasms, because of the intriguing behaviors associated with their unique size-/shape-influenced chemical, physical, and physiological features. Currently, there is a huge imbalance between the several nanoplatforms reported in the literature and the few ones approved for clinical applications. This disequilibrium affects, in particular, plasmonic nanomaterials, which present no approved platforms and few candidates in clinical trials. This trend can be reversed by promoting collaborations among scientists from different fields as well as by improving the multidisciplinary background of researchers interested in this area. Due to the inevitable nonlinearities in real systems, several nonlinear control methods like feedback linearization, sliding mode control, backstepping approach and further modes are described in detail in the literature. Due to limitations in application of well known classical methods, researchers have struggled for decades to realize robust and practical solutions for nonlinear systems by proposing different approaches or improving classical control methods. The feedback linearization approach is a control method which employs feedback to stabilize systems containing nonlinearities. In order to accomplish this, it assumes perfect knowledge of the system model to linearize the input-output relationship. In the absence of perfect system knowledge, modelling errors inevitably affect the performanceof the feedback controller. Many researchers have come up with a new form of feedback linearization, called robust feedback. This method gives a linearizing control law that transforms the nonlinear system into its linear approximation around an operating point. Thus, it causes only a small transformation in the natural behavior of the system, which is desired in order to obtain robustness. The controllers are required to provide various time domain and frequency domain performances while maintaining sufficient stability robustness. In this regard, the evolutionary optimization techniques provide better option as these are probabilistic search procedures and facilitate inclusion of wide variety of time and frequency domain performance functionals in the objective functions. A significant scope of work remains to be done which provides motivation for the research in the design of robust controllers using evolutionary optimization. Also, emerging techniques using LMI also find potential in controller design for feedback linearized systems.The thrust of the study here is to design robust controllers for nonlinear systems using Evolutionary optimization and LMI. Furthermore, latest control methods for nonlinear system have been studied, deeply, in this thesis. Combining feedback linearization with non linear disturbance observer based control (NDOBC) obtains promising disturbance rejection and reference tracking performance as compared to other robust control methods.
