The glass transition is well known to glass makers or from the common ex­ perience of drying a used chewing gum. A liquid melt or a rubber becomes a solid glass when its temperature is lowered or a solvent is extracted without crystallization. There are also dynamic effects. The viscosity of a liquid is small at high temperatures but increases dramatically as cooling proceeds down to the glass temperature T • The increase is continuous and amounts g to about fifteen orders of magnitude! The technical importance of the glass transition cannot be overestimated. A few examples will be presented in the Introduction. Most practical knowledge of the glass transition needed for glass or plastic technologies and applications is now readily available. Where then is the problem? Inthe last few years, glass transition research has enormously intensified. We now have several hundred papers a year in expensive, top scientific journals. In a 1995 Science magazine ranking, the glass transition belongs to the six major physical quests, along with broken charges, physical input for low-dimensional geometry, measurement philoso­ phy in quantum mechanics, coherent X-ray radiation for materials research, and applications of superconductivity. On the other hand, interested people outside the glass transition community have difficulty seeing exactly what the glass transition problems are. Inaddition, even insiders split into groups over which question could be the most important for slow dynamics in cold liquids.

The applications involving electromagnetic fields are so pervasive that it is difficult to estimate their contribution to the industrial output: generation of electricity, power transmission lines, electric motors, actuators, relays, radio, TV and microwave transmission and reception, magnetic storage, and even the mundane little magnet used to hold a paper note on the refrigerator are all electromagnetic in nature. One would be hard pressed to find a device that works without relaying on any electromagnetic principle or effect. This text provides a good theoretical understanding of the electromagnetic field equations but also treats a large number of applications. In fact, no topic is presented unless it is directly applicable to engineering design or unless it is needed for the understanding of another topic. In electrostatics, for example, the text includes discussions of photocopying, ink-jet printing, electrostatic separation and deposition, sandpaper production, paint spraying, and powder coating. In magnetics, the applications discussed include electric motors, implantable magnets, nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetic stirring of molten materials, and electromagnetic braking and bearings. Electric motors and transformers are used to demonstrate the ideas of magnetic forces and torques and of induction; the applications discussed include the new super-efficient electric drives, linear induction motors, and implantable transformers to power life-sustaining devices. The discussion of wave-propagation phenomena will include applications of new materials to aerospace systems, such as the so-called stealth materials, as well as the use of electromagnetic weaves for materials processing, such as grain drying with microwaves, microwave detection of explosives, and remote sensing of the earth and its resources.

The GAMM Committee for'Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations'organizes seminars and workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmic treatment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretisation methods like the finite element and the boundary element method for various type of applications in struc­ tural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to advanced solution method'. The latest seminar in this series was the 12th Kiel-Seminar which took place on January 19-21, 1996 at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and focussed on the topic Boundary Elements: Implementation and Analysis of Advanced Algorithms. The seminar was attended by 65 scientists from 10 countries. 23 lectures were given, including two survey lectures. In the last years, a remarkable progress in the numerical treatment of boundary de­ ment methods (BEM) has been obtained in Germany. This is, in particular, a res~I1t of a Schwerpunktverfahren supported by the DFG. Many aspects of the BEM are not ouly analysed but also implemented. Therefore, these proceedings present a number of papers on implementational aspects besides the analysis of advanced techniques.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourteenth Thniguchi Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held from November 10 to 14, 1991, at the Shima Kanko Hotel, Shima, Japan. The topic of the symposium was Physics 0/ Mesoscopic Systems. Mesoscopic systems have been developed band in band with the recent progress in nanotechnology and are the melting pot of basic science and technology. In nanostructures, the quantum effect of the electron wave manifests itself because of the limited dimensionality of the structure. The most typical features of these structures are the discreteness of the energy spectrum and the interference effect of electron waves, which have led to various fascinating phenomena. The purpose of this symposium was to discuss the latest developments in mesoscopic systems, especially transport phenomena, from the viewpoint of basic physics. This volume starts with an introduction to the field of mesoscopic systems together with the paper by Prof. R. Kubo, who was the first to note the existence of particular features of discrete energy levels in small metallic particles. In Part II the electronic states of quantum dots and the conductance through them are discussed. Tunneling via small structures and junctions is studied in Part ill.

This volume in the Springer Series on Surface Sciences presents a recent account of advances in the ever-broadening field of electron-and photon-stimulated sur­ face processes. As in previous volumes, these advances are presented as the proceedings of the International Workshop on Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions; the fifth workshop (DIET V) was held in Taos, New Mexico, April 1-4, 1992. It will be abundantly clear to the reader that'DIET'is not restricted to desorption, but has for several years included photochemistry, non-thermal surface modification, exciton self-trapping, and many other phenomena that are induced by electron or photon bombardment. However, most stimulated surface processes do share a common physics: initial electronic excitation, localization of the excitation, and conversion of electronic energy into nuclear kinetic energy. It is the rich variation of this theme which makes the field so interesting and fruitful. We have divided the book into eleven parts in order to emphasize the wide range of materials that are examined and to highlight recent experimental and theoretical advances. Naturally, there is considerable overlap between sections, and many papers would be appropriate in more than one part. Part I focuses on perhaps the most active area in the field today: electron attachment. Here the detection and characterization of negative ions formed by attachment of elec­ trons supplied externally from the vacuum are discussed. In addition, the first observations of negative ions formed by substrate photoelectrons are presented.

Carbohydrates are ubiquitous. They come as monomers, oligomers and polymers with a startling variety of chemical, physical and material properties. They affect almost every as­ pect of human live. For example they are an essential part of our nutrition. Cellulose, a car­ bohydrate polymer, acts as a central material in civilization: as building material for housing and as paper for written communication. Scientifically, the interest in carbohydrates ranges from structural elucidation of simple carbohydrates to fundamental biochemical processes such as photosynthesis and glycolysis. Always, a deeper understanding of a particular aspect of carbohydrate chemistry was accompanied by new methods of measuring and characteri­ zing this class of molecules. During the last decades a better understanding of the roles of carbohydrates in biochemi­ cal pathways developed. It turned out, that carbohydrates attached to proteins in glycoprote­ ins are involved in a number of molecular recognition and targeting processes. This lead to a new research field: Glycobiology. However, unlike for proteins or nucleic acids, there is at this time no consistent theory how chemical composition and structure controls function and inherent information. In order to develop the database, on which new theories and scientific hypothesis are founded, analytical methods to separate compounds with an enormous struc­ tural diversity and only minor differences in chemical or physical properties has to be deve­ loped, preferably using only minute quantities.
