- Abstract
This book is about the dynamics of neural systems and should be suitable for those with a background in mathematics, physics, or engineering who want to see how their knowledge and skill sets can be applied in a neurobiological context. No prior knowledge of neuroscience is assumed, nor is advanced understanding of all aspects of applied mathematics! Rather, models and methods are introduced in the context of a typical neural phenomenon and a narrative developed that will allow the reader to test their understanding by tackling a set of mathematical problems at the end of each chapter. The emphasis is on mathematical- as opposed to computational-neuroscience, though stresses calculation above theorem and proof. The book presents necessary mathematical material in a digestible and compact form when required for specific topics. The book has nine chapters, progressing from the cell to the tissue, and an extensive set of references. It includes Markov chain models for ions, differential equations for single neuron models, idealised phenomenological models, phase oscillator networks, spiking networks, and integro-differential equations for large scale brain activity, with delays and stochasticity thrown in for good measure. One common methodological element that arises throughout the book is the use of techniques from nonsmooth dynamical systems to form tractable models and make explicit progress in calculating solutions for rhythmic neural behaviour, synchrony, waves, patterns, and their stability. This book was written for those with an interest in applied mathematics seeking to expand their horizons to cover the dynamics of neural systems. It is suitable for a Masters level course or for postgraduate researchers starting in the field of mathematical neuroscience.

- Abstract
This volume comprises the first part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023.The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. This volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The second volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.

- Abstract
This book aims at serving the researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress on robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea, in a hybrid format, on December 16–17, 2021. Humankind is getting through the third year of COVID-19 pandemic. While this pandemic has made everyone's life so challenging, it has also expedited transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “the new normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have a consensus about what it is and what is should be like. One thing that is clear is that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing critical roles in this phase transition of our everyday lives. We see last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in the restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses and AI-based online education programs. For better readability, the total of 53 papers are grouped into four chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Design and Robot Application; Chapter III: Sensing, Perception and Recognition; and Chapter IV: Cognition, Autonomy and Intelligence. For those who have research on robot intelligence technology, we believe this book will help them understand the recent robot technologies and applications and enhance their study.

- Abstract
This more-of-physics, less-of-math, insightful and comprehensive book simplifies computational fluid dynamics for readers with little knowledge or experience in heat transfer, fluid dynamics or numerical methods. The novelty of this book lies in the simplification of the level of mathematics in CFD by presenting physical law (instead of the traditional differential equations) and discrete (independent of continuous) math-based algebraic formulations. Another distinguishing feature of this book is that it effectively links theory with computer program (code). This is done with pictorial as well as detailed explanations of implementation of the numerical methodology. It also includes pedagogical aspects such as end-of-chapter problems and carefully designed examples to augment learning in CFD code-development, application and analysis. This book is a valuable resource for students in the fields of mechanical, chemical or aeronautical engineering.

- Abstract
This volume of the “Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, Second Edition” (ECSS), introduces the fundamental physical and mathematical concepts underlying the theory of complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. Numerous applications illustrate how these concepts explain observed phenomena in our daily lives, which range from spatio-temporal patterns in fluids from atmospheric turbulence in hurricanes and tornadoes to feedback dynamics of laser intensity to structures in cities and rhythms in the brain. The spontaneous formation of well-organized structures out of microscopic system components and their interactions is one of the most fascinating and challenging phenomena for scientists to understand. Biological systems may also exhibit organized structures emanating from interactions of cells and their networks. For instance, underlying structures in the brain emerge as certain mental states, the ability to coordinate movement, or pathologies such as tremor or epileptic seizures. When we try to explain or understand these extremely complex biological phenomena, it is natural to ask whether analogous processes of self-organization may be found in much simpler systems of the inanimate world. In recent decades, it has become increasingly evident that there exist numerous examples in physical and chemical systems in which well-organized spatio-temporal structures arise out of disordered states. As in living organisms, the functioning of these systems can be maintained only by a flux of energy (and matter) through them. Synergetics combines elements from physics and mathematics to explain how a diversity of systems obey the same basic principles. All chapters in this volume have been thoroughly revised and updated from the first edition of ECSS. The second edition also includes new or expanded coverage of such topics as chaotic dynamics in laser systems and neurons, novel insights into the relation of classical chaos and quantum dynamics, and how noise in the brain tunes observed neural activity and controls animal and human behavior.

- Abstract
This book focuses on a central question in the field of complex systems: Given a fluctuating (in time or space), uni- or multi-variant sequentially measured set of experimental data (even noisy data), how should one analyse non-parametrically the data, assess underlying trends, uncover characteristics of the fluctuations (including diffusion and jump contributions), and construct a stochastic evolution equation? Here, the term'non-parametrically'exemplifies that all the functions and parameters of the constructed stochastic evolution equation can be determined directly from the measured data. The book provides an overview of methods that have been developed for the analysis of fluctuating time series and of spatially disordered structures. Thanks to its feasibility and simplicity, it has been successfully applied to fluctuating time series and spatially disordered structures of complex systems studied in scientific fields such as physics, astrophysics, meteorology, earth science, engineering, finance, medicine and the neurosciences, and has led to a number of important results. The book also includes the numerical and analytical approaches to the analyses of complex time series that are most common in the physical and natural sciences. Further, it is self-contained and readily accessible to students, scientists, and researchers who are familiar with traditional methods of mathematics, such as ordinary, and partial differential equations. The codes for analysing continuous time series are available in an R package developed by the research group Turbulence, Wind energy and Stochastic (TWiSt) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke. This package makes it possible to extract the (stochastic) evolution equation underlying a set of data or measurements.

- Abstract
After a short introduction to the fundamentals, this book provides a detailed account of major advances in applying fractional calculus to dynamical systems. Fractional order dynamical systems currently continue to gain further importance in many areas of science and engineering. As with many other approaches to mathematical modeling, the first issue to be addressed is the need to couple a definition of the fractional differentiation or integration operator with the types of dynamical systems that are analyzed. As such, for the fundamentals the focus is on basic aspects of fractional calculus, in particular stability analysis, which is required to tackle synchronization in coupled fractional order systems, to understand the essence of estimators for related integer order systems, and to keep track of the interplay between synchronization and parameter observation. This serves as the common basis for the more advanced topics and applications presented in the subsequent chapters, which include an introduction to the'Immersion and Invariance'(I&I) methodology, the masterslave synchronization scheme for partially known nonlinear fractional order systems, Fractional Algebraic Observability (FAO) and Fractional Generalized quasi-Synchronization (FGqS) to name but a few. This book is intended not only for applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists, but also for anyone in applied science dealing with complex nonlinear systems.

- Abstract
This book is a personal account of some aspects of the emergence of modern science, mostly from the viewpoint of those branches of physics which provided the much needed paradigm shift of'more is different'that heralded the advent of complexity science as an antidote to the purely reductionist approach in fundamental physics. It is also about the humans that have helped to shape these developments, including personal reminiscences and the realization that the so-called exact sciences are inevitably also a social endeavour with all its facets. Served by the razor-sharp wit of the author, this erudite ramble is meant to be neither comprehensive nor systematic, but its generous insights will give the inquisitive academically trained mind a better understanding of what science, and physics in particular, could or should be about.

- Abstract
All of us are confronted with complex phenomena occurring in daily life and in the living and inanimate nature surrounding us. Our scientific curiosity strives to unravel the mechanisms at work to create such complexity. Among various approaches to solve this problem, the field of synergetics, developed by Hermann Haken, has proven very successful as a general and interdisciplinary concept for describing and explaining complex phenomena that appear in systems under non-equilibrium conditions. These comprise dynamical states in evolving systems, spatial structure-forming processes, synchronization of states and regulatory mechanisms, and many other examples. The encompassing concepts have been applied to many disciplines, like physics, chemistry, biology, and beyond those also from synergetics to information theory, brain science, economics, and others. Starting from basic methods of complexity research and synergetics, this volume contains thirty contributions on complex systems that exhibit spontaneous pattern formation far from thermal equilibrium. Written by international experts and young researchers assembled under one roof, this volume reflects state of the art research from a variety of scientific fields and disciplines where complexity theory and synergetics are important or even indispensable tools today and in the future.

- Abstract
This book provides state-of-the-art results and theories in homogeneous turbulence, including anisotropy and compressibility effects with extension to quantum turbulence, magneto-hydodynamic turbulence and turbulence in non-newtonian fluids. Each chapter is devoted to a given type of interaction (strain, rotation, shear, etc.), and presents and compares experimental data, numerical results, analysis of the Reynolds stress budget equations and advanced multipoint spectral theories. The role of both linear and non-linear mechanisms is emphasized. The link between the statistical properties and the dynamics of coherent structures is also addressed. Despite its restriction to homogeneous turbulence, the book is of interest to all people working in turbulence, since the basic physical mechanisms which are present in all turbulent flows are explained. The reader will find a unified presentation of the results and a clear presentation of existing controversies. Special attention is givento bridge the results obtained in different research communities. Mathematical tools and advanced physical models are detailed in dedicated chapters.

- Abstract
This book bridges the current gap between the theory of symmetry-based dynamics and its application to model and analyze complex systems. As an alternative approach, the authors use the symmetry of the system directly to formulate the appropriate models, and also to analyze the dynamics. Complex systems with symmetry arise in a wide variety of fields, including communication networks, molecular dynamics, manufacturing businesses, ecosystems, underwater vehicle dynamics, celestial and spacecraft dynamics and continuum mechanics. A general approach for their analysis has been to derive a detailed model of their individual parts, connect the parts and note that the system contains some sort of symmetry, then attempt to exploit this symmetry in order to simplify numerical computations. This approach can result in highly complicated models that are difficult to analyze even numerically. The alternative approach, while nonstandard, is not entirely new among the mathematics community. However, there is much less familiarity with the techniques of symmetry-breaking bifurcation, as they apply to the engineering, design and fabrication, of complex systems, in particular, nonlinear sensor devices with special emphasis on the conceptualization and development of new technologies of magnetic sensors such as fluxgate magnetometers and SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices), E-- (electric-field) sensors, and communication and navigation systems that require multiple frequencies of operation, such as radar and antenna devices as well as gyroscopic systems.
