An original method of investigation of the conjugate conductive-convective problem of periodic heat transfer is developed. The novelty of the approach is that a particular conjugate problem is replaced by a general boundary-value problem for the heat conduction equation in the solid. Within the framework of the hyperbolic model of thermal conductivity, the effect of self-reinforcement of the degree of conjugation by increasing the period of oscillations is found. Sebastian Hann describes the development of a quasi-dimensional burn rate model that enables the prediction of a fuel variation, without the need for a recalibration of the model. The model is valid for spark-ignition combustion engines powered by conventional and carbon-neutral fuels. Its high predictive ability was achieved by modeling the fuel-dependent laminar flame speed based on reaction kinetics calculations. In addition, the author discards a fuel influence on flame wrinkling by performing an engine measurement data analysis. He investigates the fuel influence on engine knock and models it via ignition delay times obtained from reaction kinetics calculations.

This book presents experimental and numerical findings on reducing shock-induced separation by applying transition upstream the shock wave. The purpose is to find out how close to the shock wave the transition should be located in order to obtain favorable turbulent boundary layer interaction. Benjamin Stegmann untersucht und validiert ein eindimensionales Simulationsmodell, mit dessen Hilfe das thermische Verhalten von verbrennungsmotorisch betriebenen Kraftfahrzeugen hauptsächlich in der Warmlaufphase untersucht wurde. Die wichtigsten Parameter bei der Bestimmung des Fahrwiderstands und Motorbetriebspunkts werden einer Sensitivitätsanalyse unterzogen, um so deren Einfluss zu kategorisieren und zu priorisieren. Das Modell wird mithilfe von Messungen zweier Fahrzeuge im Thermowindkanal und in einer Klimakammer validiert. This contributed volume is a result of discussions held at ABICT'13(4th International Workshop on Advances in Business ICT) in Krakow, September 8-11, 2013. This book presents a comprehensive overview of fluid mechanical, thermal and physico-chemical aspects of drop-surface interactions. Basic physical mechanisms pertaining to free-surface flow phenomena characteristic of drop impact on solid and liquid surfaces are explained emphasizing the importance of scaling. Moreover, physico-chemical fundamentals relating to a forced spreading of complex solutions, analytical tools for calculating compressibility effects, and heat transfer and phase change phenomena occurring during solidification and evaporation processes, respectively, are introduced in detail. Finally, numerical approaches particularly suited for modeling drop-surface interactions are consisely surveyed with a particular emphasis on boundary integral methods and Navier-Stokes algorithms (volume of fluid, level set and front tracking algorithms). The book is closed by contributions to a workshop on Drop-Surface Interactions held at the International Centre of Mechanical Sciences.

The workshop on'computational physics of transport and interfacial dynam­ ics'was held in Dresden, Germany from February 25 to March 8,2002. The Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems has sponsored the workshop and the preliminary lecture-based seminar. The workshop has closely pursued the recent progress of research in com­ putational physics and materials science, particularly in modelling both traf­ fic fiow phenomena and complex multi-scale solidification. These branches of science have become topics of considerable diversity linking disciplines as different as physics, mathematical and computational modelling, nonlinear dynamics, materials sciences, statistical mechanics and foundry technique. The international workshop brought together experts from different fields in order to enhance the exchange of knowledge, to assess common interests and to provide closer cooperation between different communities of researchers. The workshop intended to create a comprehensive and coherent image of the current research status and to formulate various possible perspectives for joint future activities. Special emphases laid on exchanging experiences concerning numerical tools and on the bridging of the scales as necessary in a variety of scientific and engineering applications. An interesting possibility along this line was the coupling of different computational approaches leading to hybrid simulations. In this sense, we explicitly addressed researchers working with different numerical schemes as diverse as cellular automata, coupled maps, fi­ nite difference and finite element algorithms for partial differential equations (e. g. phase-field computations).

My wife Tatyana, daughter Mariya, son Alexandr It is well known that the mixed-mode conditions appear when the direction of the applied loading does not coincide with the orthogonal K,-Kn-Km space. In general, in the industrial practice the mixed-mode fracture and the mixed-mode crack growth are more likely to be considered the rule than the exception. Miller et al. considers that cracks can grow due to a mixture of processes (ductile and brittle), mechanisms (static, fatigue, creep) and loading modes (tension, torsion, biax­ ial/multiaxial). Additionally mixed-mode crack-extension can be affected by many other considerations such as artifact geometry (thin plates, thick shells, and the size, shape and orientation of the defect), environmental effects (temperature, gaseous and liquid surroundings), material state (crystallographic structure, heat treatment and route of manufacture) and stress conditions (out-of-phase and ran­ dom loading effects). The main feature of the mixed-mode fracture is that the crack growth would no longer take place in a self-similar manner and does not follow a universal trajec­ tory that is it will grow on a curvilinear path. There are various fracture criteria, which predict the behavior of cracks in brittle and ductile materials loaded in combined modes. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) criteria predict basi­ cally the same direction for crack propagation. Cracks in brittle materials have been shown to propagate normal to the maximum tangential stress. In ductile ma­ terials yielding occurs at the crack tip and LEFM is no longer applicable.

During the last decade physicists, engineers and computer scientists have joined in an enormously fruitful dialogue about traffic and granular flow. Cars and sand grains have in common, that they interact irreversibly, which is the reason for similar jamming phenomena. The main difference is that car drivers choose their destination and route individually, while grains follow external driving forces. This book gives an overview about the progress in modelling, computer simulation, experiments and field observations, which was reached within the last two years. The contributions are based on the International Workshop Traffic and Granular Flow'01, which took place in Nagoya, 15 - 17 October 2001. Topics include a critical classification of models for highway traffic, new technological applications, friction and arching phenomena in pedestrian traffic, scale free networks and internet traffic, instabilities and fluctuations in avalanches and granular pipe flow.

The research work of the collaborative research center SFB401 Flow Modulation and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Airplane Wings at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen, which is reported in this book, was pos­ sible due to the financial support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The proposal has been approved after evaluation by the referees of DFG selected from other universities and industry, which is gratefully acknowledged. The work is still in progress and now approved to continue until the end of year 2005. More than 50 scientists from universities of the United States, Russia, France, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and research orga­ nizations NASA, ONERA, NLR, DLR could be invited and have visited the research center, gave seminars on their research on related topics and some of them stayed longer for joined work. Besides its scientific value, also the importance of the pro gram for scientific educa­ tion becomes evident by looking at the numbers of completed theses, which are up to now about 15 doctoral theses, 40 diploma theses and 70 study theses. The scope of this book is based on the keynote lectures delivered during the Inter­ national Symposium on Anisotropic Behaviour of Damaged Materials ABDM, held in Krakow-Przegorzaiy, Poland, September 9-11, 2002. The Symposium was organized by the Solid Mechanics Division of the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Design - Cracow University of Technology, under aus­ pices of the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Cracow University of Technology, Prof. S. Michalowski. The Co-organizers of the ABDM Symposium were: • Martin-Luther-Universitat Halle-Wittenberg, • Centre of Excellence for Advanced Materials and Structures AMAS at the In­ stitute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sci­ ences, Warsaw, • Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw. Ten chapters of this book in their present form essentially exceed lectures de­ livered at the Symposium. They should rather be read as not only author's recent achievements in the field, but also the state of art and synthesis done by the lead­ ers in the mechanics community. The mixed formula of the Symposium, namely: the invited lectures and presentations of the original papers by the participants was used. 23 original papers, published in the Symposium Proceedings on CD, exhaust the full scope of the ABDM Symposium. The present book provides a survey of various damage models focusing on the damage response in anisotropic materials as well as damage-induced anisotropy.

The scale that concerns the practitioner in mechanics is usually qualified as macroscopic. Indeed, applications are rarely much below the human scale, and in order to be relevant models must be constructed on a similar scale, several orders of magnitude greater than the objects that are normally attributed to the physicist's sphere of interest. The mechanicist is therefore aware of the limits of these models, no matter how elegant their mathematical formulation may be, when the time comes far experimental validation. The mechanicist has a deep concern for the microscopic phenomena at the heart of what is being modelled, exposed by the physicist's research, which can today explain a wide range of material behaviour. The aim of this book is to present the general ideas behind continuum mechanics, thermoelasticity and one-dimensional media. Our approach to constructing mechanical models and modelling forces is based upon the principle oi virtual work. There are several advantages to thismethod. To begin with, it clearly emphasises the key role played by geometrical modelling, leading to mechanically consistent presentations in a systematic way. In addition, by requiring rigorous thought and clear formulation of hypotheses, it identifies the inductive steps and emphasises the need for validation, despite its axiomatic appearance. Moreover, once mastered, it will serve as a productive tool in the reader's later research career. This duality is used in the chapter devoted to variational methods for the solution of thermoelastic problems.

Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Mixed finite element methods are a tool to solve complex engineering problems of different nature. This subject is treated in the volume from the engineering and the mathematical point. Different applications are considered which depict the value of mixed formulations in engineering on one side. On the other side the mathematical background is provided including proofs of convergence and stability of these methods and adequate solvers for mixed problems are discussed. This broad spectrum yields an indepth treatment of mixed methods from different perspectives.
