Multibody Dynamics is an area of Computational Mechanics which blends together various disciplines such as structural dynamics, multi-physics - chanics, computational mathematics, control theory and computer science, in order to deliver methods and tools for the virtual prototyping of complex mechanical systems. Multibody dynamics plays today a central role in the modeling, analysis, simulation and optimization of mechanical systems in a variety of?elds and for a wide range of industrial applications. The ECCOMAS Thematic Conference on Multibody Dynamics was ini- ated in Lisbon in 2003, and then continued in Madrid in 2005 with the goal of providing researchers in Multibody Dynamics with appropriate venues for exchanging ideas and results. The third edition of the Conference was held at the Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Italy, from June 25 to June 28, 2007. The Conference saw the participation of over 250 researchers from 32 di?- ent countries, presenting 209 technical papers, and proved to be an excellent forum for discussion and technical exchange on the most recent advances in this rapidly growing?eld.

Das Buch spannt einen Bogen von einfachen thermodynamischen Grundlagen des Verbrennungsmotors hin zu komplexen Modellansätzen zur Beschreibung der Gemischbildung, Zündung, Schadstoffbildung, Aufladung und Verbrennung unter Beachtung der Motorperipherie von Otto- und Dieselmotoren. Der heute stark diskutierten Frage der Schadstoffbildung wird durch neue Abschnitte über die Modellbildung für Abgaskatalysatoren und Dieselpartikelfilter Rechnung getragen. Damit liegt der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt des Buches auf den Simulationsmodellen und deren strömungstechnischen, thermodynamischen und verbrennungschemischen Grundlagen, wie sie für die Entwicklung moderner Verbrennungsmotoren unentbehrlich sind.

Um das gesamte Potential bei der Reduzierung der CO2-Emission in Kraftfahrzeugen ausschöpfen zu können, muss neben der Optimierung des Basismotors auch der Einfluss der Nebenaggregate auf den Kraftstoffverbrauch berücksichtigt werden. Marco Lunanova beschreibt in seinem Buch den aktuellen technischen Stand der gängigsten Nebenaggregate und charakterisiert diese hinsichtlich ihres Einflusses auf den Kraftstoffverbrauch. Das Optimierungspotential der einzelnen Nebenaggregate und deren Verbund wird dargestellt. Verschiedene Kombinationen von Maßnahmen unter Berücksichtigung der entstehenden Kosten zeigen, dass eine deutliche Einsparung beim Kraftstoffverbrauch durch Optimierung der Nebenaggregate realisiert werden kann.

It is our pleasure to present these proceedings for “The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles II: Trucks, Buses and Trains” International Conference held in Lake - hoe, California, August 26-31, 2007 by Engineering Conferences International (ECI). Brought together were the world's leading scientists and engineers from industry, universities, and research laboratories, including truck and high-speed train manufacturers and operators. All were gathered to discuss computer simu- tion and experimental techniques to be applied for the design of the more efficient trucks, buses and high-speed trains required in future years. This was the second conference in the series. The focus of the first conference in 2002 was the interplay between computations and experiment in minimizing ae- dynamic drag. The present proceedings, from the 2007 conference, address the development and application of advanced aerodynamic simulation and experim- tal methods for state-of-the-art analysis and design, as well as the development of new ideas and trends holding promise for the coming 10-year time span. Also - cluded, are studies of heavy vehicle aerodynamic tractor and trailer add-on - vices, studies of schemes to delay undesirable flow separation, and studies of - derhood thermal management.

This book includes a numerical investigation of shear localization in granular materials within micro-polar hypoplasticity, which was carried out during my long research stay at the Institute of Soil and Rock Mechanics at Karlsruhe University from 1985 to 1996. I dedicate my book to Prof. Gerd Gudehus from Germany, the former head of the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics at Karlsruhe University and the supervisor of my scientific research during my stay in Karlsruhe, who encouraged me to deal with shear localization in granular bodies within micro-polar hypoplasticity. This volume presents recent developments in the theory of defects and the mechanics of material forces. Most of the contributions were presented at the International Symposium on Defect and Material Forces (ISDMM2007), held in Aussois, France, March 25-29, 2007. The mechanics of material forces, originated in the works of Eshelby, provide a rational framework for the description of driving forces on evolving inhomogeneities and structural changes in continua. The general eshelbian mechanics formulation comes up with a unifying treatment of different phenomena like fracture and damage evolution, phase transitions, plasticity and dislocation motion, etc. The articles concern both theoretical and computational aspects of the material mechanics of defects. Among the addressed topics are fracture and damage, electromagnetoelasticity, plasticity, distributed dislocations, thermodynamics, poroelasticity, generalized continua, structural optimization, conservation laws and symmetries, multiscale approaches, and numerical solution strategies. This is a hardbound spin-off reprinted from The International Journal of Fracture 147:1-4.

This book concerns the numerical simulation of dynamical systems whose trajec- ries may not be differentiable everywhere. They are named nonsmooth dynamical systems. They make an important class of systems, rst because of the many app- cations in which nonsmooth models are useful, secondly because they give rise to new problems in various elds of science. Usually nonsmooth dynamical systems are represented as differential inclusions, complementarity systems, evolution va- ational inequalities, each of these classes itself being split into several subclasses. The book is divided into four parts, the rst three parts being sketched in Fig. 0. 1. The aim of the rst part is to present the main tools from mechanics and applied mathematics which are necessary to understand how nonsmooth dynamical systems may be numerically simulated in a reliable way. Many examples illustrate the th- retical results, and an emphasis is put on mechanical systems, as well as on electrical circuits (the so-called Filippov's systems are also examined in some detail, due to their importance in control applications). The second and third parts are dedicated to a detailed presentation of the numerical schemes. A fourth part is devoted to the presentation of the software platform Siconos. This book is not a textbook on - merical analysis of nonsmooth systems, in the sense that despite the main results of numerical analysis (convergence, order of consistency, etc.) being presented, their proofs are not provided.

This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on ‘Scaling in Solid Mechanics', held in Cardiff from 25th to 29th June 2007. The Symposium was convened to address and place on record topical issues in theoretical, experimental and computational aspects of scaling approaches to solid mechanics and related elds. Scaling is a rapidly expanding area of research having multidisciplinary - plications. The expertise represented in the Symposium was accordingly very wide, and many of the world's greatest authorities in their respective elds participated. Scaling methods apply wherever there is similarity across many scales or one need to bridge different scales, e. g. the nanoscale and macroscale. The emphasis in the Symposium was upon fundamental issues such as: mathematical foundations of scaling methods based on transformations and connections between multi-scale approaches and transformations. The Symposium remained focussed on fundam- tal research issues of practical signicance. The considered topics included damage accumulation, growth of fatigue cracks, development of patterns of aws in earth's core and inice, abrasiveness of rough surfaces, and soon. The Symposium consisted of forty-two oral presentations. All of the lectures were invited. Full record of the programme appears as an Appendix. Several of the lectures are not represented, mainly because of prior commitments to publish elsewhere. The proceedings p- vide a reasonable picture of understanding as it exists at present. The Symposium showed that scaling methods cannot be reduced solely to dimensional analysis and fractal approaches.

This book presents the latest information on the intelligent CNC machine tool spindle system, which integrates various disciplines such as mechanical engineering, control engineering, computer science and information technology. It describes a prediction method and model for temperature rise and thermal deformation in motorized spindles and proposes an intelligent stator resistance identification method to reduce the torque ripple of motorized spindles under direct torque control. Further, it discusses the on-line dynamic balance method for NC machine tool spindles. The biogeographic optimization algorithm and hybrid intelligent algorithm presented here were first applied in the field of motorized spindle performance control. In turn, the book presents extensive motorized spindle performance test data and includes detailed examples of how intelligent algorithms can be applied to motor spindle stator resistance identification, temperature field prediction and on-line dynamic balance. In summary, the book provides readers with the latest tools for designing, testing and implementing intelligent motorized spindle systems in terms of the basic theory, technological applications and future prospects, and offers a wealth of practical information for researchers in mechanical engineering, especially in the area of control systems.

This book groups the main advances in material forming, considering different processes, both conventional and non-conventional. It focuses on polymers, composites and metals, which are analyzed from the state of the art. Special emphasis is devoted to the contributions of the European Scientific Association for Material Forming (ESAFORM) during the last decade and in particular the ones coming from its annual international conference.

Micromechanics provides a link between the structure and the properties at different scales of observation. This book deals with micromechanical analysis of interfaces and interface layers and presents several modelling tools, ranging from the rigorous method of asymptotic expansions to practical finite element simulations, suitable for this class of problems. Two application areas are discussed. Boundary layers associated with contact of rough bodies are modelled by applying a scale transition approach in which a macroscopic interface of zero thickness is seen at the micro-scale as a layer with some finite thickness. Secondly, evolution of laminated microstructures accompanying stress-induced martensitic transformations in shape memory alloys (SMA) is analyzed as an illustration of the case when the local interfacial phenomena – here the propagation of phase transformation fronts – govern the macroscopic behaviour of a heterogeneous material. The corresponding two parts of the book are self-contained, so they can be read separately by those interested only in micromechanical modelling of contact phenomena or in modelling of pseudoelasticity and stress-induced martensitic microstructures in SMA single crystals.

This book contains the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Hanover, Germany, in November 2006. Coverage includes new mathematical techniques, new discretization techniques, advanced applications of unilateral contact to masonry structures, decohesion analysis and tractive rolling of tires. The book provides a good overview of modern techniques and state-of-the-art discretizations schemes applied in contact mechanics.

Wave propagation in infinite or unbounded domains is often encountered in scientific and engineering applications. Theoretical fundamentals and applications of a new numerical model which has the ability to simulate such wave propagation are presented. Attention is focused on linear waves in ideal fluids and elastic domains. Wave propagation based on scalar and vector wave equations, as well as fluid-structure interaction and soil-structure interaction is numerical simulated. The model is based on a coupled finite element/scaled boundary finite element method (FEM/SBFEM). While the FEM maps the near-field, under the immense variety of non-reflecting boundary conditions the SBFEM, developed by Wolf and Song, was chosen. It has some unique features: reduction of the spatial dimension by one without requiring a fundamental solution, no discretisation of free and fixed boundaries and interfaces between different materials, and influence of the infinite far-field could be stored in the form of matrices for further simulations (e.g., different load cases). Benchmark examples show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm. Finally, covered fields of applications are: acoustics, dynamic behaviour of offshore wind turbines, and seismic analysis of buildings including soil-structure interaction.

A new discipline is said to attain maturity when the subject matter takes the shape of a textbook. Several textbooks later, the discipline tends to acquire a firm place in the curriculum for teaching and learning. Computer Aided Engineering Design (CAED), barely three decades old, is interdisciplinary in nature whose boundaries are still expanding. However, it draws its core strength from several acknowledged and diverse areas such as computer graphics, differential geometry, Boolean algebra, computational geometry, topological spaces, numerical analysis, mechanics of solids, engineering design and a few others. CAED also needs to show its strong linkages with Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). As is true with any growing discipline, the literature is widespread in research journals, edited books, and conference proceedings. Various textbooks have appeared with different biases, like geometric modeling, computer graphics, and CAD/CAM over the last decade. This book goes into mathematical foundations and the core subjects of CAED without allowing itself to be overshadowed by computer graphics. It is written in a logical and thorough manner for use mainly by senior and graduate level students as well as users and developers of CAD software. The book covers (a) The fundamental concepts of geometric modeling so that a real understanding of designing synthetic surfaces and solid modeling can be achieved. (b) A wide spectrum of CAED topics such as CAD of linkages and machine elements, finite element analysis, optimization. (c) Application of these methods to real world problems.

Dem trägt dieses Buch Rechnung, indem großer Wert auf die ausführliche Herleitung der physikalischen Zusammenhänge und die dazu gehörenden lückenlosen Ketten von Schlussfolgerungen gelegt wird. The investigations of multiscale problems in multibody system contacts is a most interesting and timely topic which is the subject of intensive research for more than a decade. Many questions have already been answered and the mechanically sound description and simulation is increasingly being applied to practical engineering problems. The IUTAM Symposium on ”Multiscale Problems in Multibody System Contacts” in Stuttgart, Germany which was held February 20-23, 2006 facilitated discussions between researchers active in the?eld and enabled us to review the current state of the subject, and to identify the important topics which require further e?ort. Multiscale problems occur very naturally in contact mechanics. Typically thecontactforcesandstressesareveryhighandthey aretransmittedwithina veryshortperiodoftime.This leadstoquestions,e.g.howtheslowrigidbody motion and the fast motion changes can be considered simultaneously or how interface e?ects couple with wave propagation and the large-scale motion. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a basis for discussion and exchange of new concepts and ideas between scientists from all over Europe and the world. Emphasis was placed also on sharing algorithms and concepts with young researchers who only recently entered the?eld of mechanical c- tacts.

This volume is the proceedings of the International Conference on Advances in Engineering Structures,Mechanics& Construction,convenedat the UniversityofWaterloo on May14–17,2006. TheconferencewasheldtocelebratefortyyearsofrelatedresearchachievementattheUniversity of Waterloo. The Solid Mechanics Division (SMD) of the university was founded in 1966 as a research centre of excellence. During the next three decades, SMD hosted many scienti?c visitors from around the world and held more than a dozen international conferences, lecture series and symposia on a diverse range of topics in mechanics and structural engineering. Upon the retirement of many of its founding members in the 1990s, SMD was renamed the Structures, Mechanics & Construction Division (SMCD) to re?ect the changing research interests of its newer members. The conference also celebrated the academic career of Professor Donald E. Grierson as a dist- guished researcher and educator. Professor Grierson has been a faculty member of the Department of Civil Engineering and SMD/SMCD of the University of Waterloo since 1968. He was an early contributor to the Solid Mechanics Division in the 1960s, and was pivotal in the reformation of the Structures, Mechanics & Construction Division in the mid of 1990s. After a productive career of thirty-eight years in research and teaching, Professor Grierson retired from the university at the end of 2005.

This book is an outgrowth of my involvement in two groups of research in solid mechanics, created in 1960 for the French nuclear energy program. At this time, it was decided that France, as a no-oil reservoir country, must be powered by nuclear energy, which represents today 80% of the total - tional energy supply. Long before the construction of the first nuclear plant at Fessenheim in 1973, Electricité de France (EdF) created its first solid mechanics laboratory, appointed researchers and sent them to the universities or abroad in order to learn about theories and new methods of assessment of the safety of structures. Working at EdF, I was training in Professor Jean Mandel's laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique (LMS), Paris. My friend René Labbens, working at Framatome (the builder of nuclear plants) was training at the Lehigh University, under the guidance of professors G. R. Irwin and G. C. Sih. We had to work hard, both academically at the u- versities laboratories and performing engineering tasks for our employer. This dual position was a great chance for many of us, since we discovered that real industrial problems are the source of new subjects and research problems to be solved by theoreticians in the universities and conversely we immediately knew if our theoretical work was good or not for appli- tions as revealed in our daily works conducted for our industrial employer.

Contact mechanics has its application in many engineering problems. No one can walk without frictional contact, and no car would move for the same r- son. Hence contact mechanics has, from an engineering point of view, a long history, beginning in ancient Egypt with the movement of large stone blocks, over?rst experimental contributions from leading scientists like Leonardo da Vinci andCoulomb, to today's computational methods. In the past c- tact conditions were often modelled in engineering analysis by more simple boundary conditions since analytical solutions were not present for real world applications. In such cases, one investigated contact as a local problem using the stress and strain?elds stemming from the analysis which was performed for the entire structure. With the rapidly increasing power of moderncomp- ers, more and more numerical simulations in engineering can include contact constraints directly, which make the problems nonlinear. This book is an account of the modern theory of nonlinear continuum mechanics and its application to contact problems, as well as of modern s- ulation techniques for contact problems using the?nite element method. The latter includes a variety of discretization techniques for small and large def- mation contact. Algorithms play another prominent role whenrobustand- cient techniques have to be designed for contact simulations. Finally, adaptive methods based on error controlled?nite element analysis and mesh adaption techniques are of great interest for the reliable numerical solution of contact problems.

This textbook on models and modeling in mechanics introduces a new unifying approach to applied mechanics: through the concept of the open scheme, a step-by-step approach to modeling evolves. Among all the fields in solid mechanics the methodologies associated to multibody dynamics are probably those that provide a better framework to aggregate different disciplines. This idea is clearly reflected in the multidisciplinary applications in biomechanics that use multibody dynamics to describe the motion of the biological entities, or in finite elements where the multibody dynamics provides powerful tools to describe large motion and kinematic restrictions between system components, or in system control for which multibody dynamics are the prime form of describing the systems under analysis, or even in applications with fluid-structures interaction or aeroelasticity. This book contains revised and enlarged versions of selected communications presented at the ECCOMAS Thematic Conference in Multibody Dynamics 2003 that took place in Lisbon, Portugal, which have been enhanced in their self-containment and tutorial aspects by the authors. The result is a comprehensive text that constitutes a valuable reference for researchers and design engineers and helps to appraise the potential of application of multibody dynamics to a wide range of scientific and engineering areas of relevance.

The Characteristics of Mechanical Engineering Systems focuses on the characteristics that must be considered when designing a mechanical engineering system. Mechanical systems are presented on the basis of component input-output relationships, paying particular attention to lumped-parameter problems and the interrelationships between lumped components or''black-boxes''in an engineering system. Electric motors and generators are treated in an elementary manner, and the principles involved are explained as far as possible from physical and qualitative reasoning. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with an introduction to the engineering system and how it works, citing a number of examples such as internal combustion engines, electric generators, and power converters in series. The discussion then turns to power conversion, with emphasis on general forms of converter output characteristic, demand characteristic, and efficiency characteristic. Power transmission is also considered, along with dynamic performance and energy storage. The final chapter examines the linear dynamics of mechanical systems and covers topics such as small excursion dynamics, integral control, and sinusoidal disturbance. Ludwig Prandtl, with his fundamental contributions to hydrodynamics, aerodynamics and gasdynamics, greatly influenced the development of fluid mechanics as a whole and it was his pioneering research in the first half of the 20th century that founded modern fluid mechanics. Many partial differential equations arising in practice are parameter-dependent problems that are of singularly perturbed type. Prominent examples include plate and shell models for small thickness in solid mechanics, convection-diffusion problems in fluid mechanics, and equations arising in semi-conductor device modelling. Common features of these problems are layers and, in the case of non-smooth geometries, corner singularities. Mesh design principles for the efficient approximation of both features by the hp-version of the finite element method (hp-FEM) are proposed in this volume. For a class of singularly perturbed problems on polygonal domains, robust exponential convergence of the hp-FEM based on these mesh design principles is established rigorously.

The major goal of this book is to present the implementation of some damage models with finite elements. The damage models are based on the principles of continuum damage mechanics and the effective stress concept. Several books have appeared recently on damage mechanics but are mostly theoretical in nature. Alternatively, this book provides a complete finite element program that includes the effects of damage. The book consists of two parts. Part I includes two chapters mainly review­ ing topics from finite element analysis and continuum damage mechanics. The reader is cautioned that the material contained in this part is introductor- other references must be consulted for the theoretical aspects of these topics. For a complete theoretical treatment of the subject, the reader is referred to the book Advances in Damage Mechanics: Metals and Metal Matrix Composites by Voyiadjis and Kattan, published in 1999. In Part II the finite element program DNA is introduced in three chapters. DNA stands for'Da­ mage Nonlinear Analysis'. The program can be used for the analysis of elasto­ plastic material behavior including the effects of damage within the frame­ work of damage mechanics. Two versions of DNA are presented - one for small strain analysis and one for finite strain analysis. The program makes extensive calls to a library of tensor operations developed by the authors. The tensor library is extensively outlined in the last chapter of the book.

This book systematically discusses nonlinear interval optimization design theory and methods. Firstly, adopting a mathematical programming theory perspective, it develops an innovative mathematical transformation model to deal with general nonlinear interval uncertain optimization problems, which is able to equivalently convert complex interval uncertain optimization problems to simple deterministic optimization problems. This model is then used as the basis for various interval uncertain optimization algorithms for engineering applications, which address the low efficiency caused by double-layer nested optimization. Further, the book extends the nonlinear interval optimization theory to design problems associated with multiple optimization objectives, multiple disciplines, and parameter dependence, and establishes the corresponding interval optimization models and solution algorithms. Lastly, it uses the proposed interval uncertain optimization models and methods to deal with practical problems in mechanical engineering and related fields, demonstrating the effectiveness of the models and methods.
