This book comprises the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computational Engineering (ICCE 2017), held in Darmstadt, Germany on September 28-29, 2017. The conference is intended to provide an interdisciplinary meeting place for researchers and practitioners working on computational methods in all disciplines of engineering, applied mathematics and computer science. Basierend auf der sogenannten ‚Unscented-Transformation‘, die bislang insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Kalman-Filterung ein Begriff ist, können Unsicherheiten mithilfe des Erwartungswertes und der Kovarianzmatrix der nichtlinearen Systemdynamik prädiziert und im Kostenfunktional gewichtet werden. Der Autor stellt einen neuen Ansatz für die modellprädiktive Regelung nichtlinearer Systeme mit stochastischen Unsicherheiten vor und kann anhand mehrerer Beispielsysteme nachweisen, dass Beschränkungen auch in Gegenwart von Unsicherheiten zuverlässig eingehalten werden können.

This book presents a collection of papers emphasizing applications of mathematical models and methods to real-world problems of relevance for industry, life science, environment, finance and so on.The biannual Conference of ECMI (the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry) held in 2014 focused on various aspects of industrial and applied mathematics. The five main topics addressed at the conference were mathematical models in life science, material science and semiconductors, mathematical methods in the environment, design automation and industrial applications, and computational finance. Several other topics have been treated, such as, among others, optimization and inverse problems, education, numerical methods for stiff pdes, model reduction, imaging processing, multi physics simulation, mathematical models in textile industry. The conference, which brought together applied mathematicians and experts from industry, provided a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, problems and methodologies, bridging the gap between mathematics and industry and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. The conference has included a presentation of EU-Maths-In (European Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation), a recent joint initiative of ECMI and EMS. The proceedings from this conference represent a snapshot of the current activity in industrial mathematics in Europe, and are highly relevant to anybody interested in the latest applications of mathematics to industrial problems.

O presente livro reúne vários trabalhos apresentados e selecionados por pares durante o IV Seminário de Pesquisa, Pós-graduação e Inovação realizado em setembro de 2016 na Regional Catalão da Universidade Federal de Goiás. Os artigos relatam resultados de pesquisas desenvolvidas e em desenvolvimento na área de Engenharias, a qual apresenta-se como uma das vocações da Regional Catalão, afirmação embasada na quantidade e qualidade dos trabalhos que compõem este livro. De uma maneira geral, os trabalhos abrangem pesquisas relacionadas à previsão do comportamento mecânico de novos materiais e sua integridade estrutural, de estruturas sujeitas a vibrações, estudos de projetos e simulações numéricas empregadas nas indústrias automobilística e mineradora, estudo de protótipos com vistas à reabilitação de mãos, entre outros. Dentro desse contexto, procurou-se um título que refletisse o que se apresenta aqui e, por se tratar de uma área ampla como a área de Engenharias, optou-se pelo título “Tecnologias em Pesquisa: Engenharias”.

Designing complex integrated circuits relies heavily on mathematical methods and calls for suitable simulation and optimization tools. The current design approach involves simulations and optimizations in different physical domains (device, circuit, thermal, electromagnetic) and in a range of electrical engineering disciplines (logic, timing, power, crosstalk, signal integrity, system functionality). COMSON was a Marie Curie Research Training Network created to meet these new scientific and training challenges by (a) developing new descriptive models that take these mutual dependencies into account, (b) combining these models with existing circuit descriptions in new simulation strategies and (c) developing new optimization techniques that will accommodate new designs.The book presents the main project results in the fields of PDAE modeling and simulation, model order reduction techniques and optimization, based on merging the know-how of three major European semiconductor companies with the combined expertise of university groups specialized in developing suitable mathematical models, numerical schemes and e-learning facilities. In addition, a common Demonstrator Platform for testing mathematical methods and approaches was created to assess whether they are capable of addressing the industry's problems, and to educate young researchers by providing hands-on experience with state-of-the-art problems.

This book provides a basic introduction to reduced basis (RB) methods for problems involving the repeated solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) arising from engineering and applied sciences, such as PDEs depending on several parameters and PDE-constrained optimization. The book presents a general mathematical formulation of RB methods, analyzes their fundamental theoretical properties, discusses the related algorithmic and implementation aspects, and highlights their built-in algebraic and geometric structures. More specifically, the authors discuss alternative strategies for constructing accurate RB spaces using greedy algorithms and proper orthogonal decomposition techniques, investigate their approximation properties and analyze offline-online decomposition strategies aimed at the reduction of computational complexity. Furthermore, they carry out both a priori and a posteriori error analysis. The whole mathematical presentation is made more stimulating by the use of representative examples of applicative interest in the context of both linear and nonlinear PDEs. Moreover, the inclusion of many pseudocodes allows the reader to easily implement the algorithms illustrated throughout the text. This book presents selected papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Computational Engineering held in Stuttgart from October 6 to 10, 2014, bringing together innovative contributions from related fields with computer science and mathematics as an important technical basis among others. The workshop discussed the state of the art and the further evolution of numerical techniques for simulation in engineering and science. We focus on current trends in numerical simulation in science and engineering, new requirements arising from rapidly increasing parallelism in computer architectures, and novel mathematical approaches. Accordingly, the chapters of the book particularly focus on parallel algorithms and performance optimization, coupled systems, and complex applications and optimization.

This book introduces novel design techniques developed to increase the safety of aircraft engines. The authors demonstrate how the application of uncertainty methods can overcome problems in the accurate prediction of engine lift, caused by manufacturing error. This in turn ameliorates the difficulty of achieving required safety margins imposed by limits in current design and manufacturing methods. This text shows that even state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are not able to predict the same performance measured in experiments; CFD methods assume idealised geometries but ideal geometries do not exist, cannot be manufactured and their performance differs from real-world ones. By applying geometrical variations of a few microns, the agreement with experiments improves dramatically, but unfortunately the manufacturing errors in engines or in experiments are unknown. In order to overcome this limitation, uncertainty quantification considers the probability density functions of manufacturing errors. It is then possible to predict the overall variation of the jet engine performance using stochastic techniques. Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines demonstrates that some geometries are not affected by manufacturing errors, meaning that it is possible to design safer engines. Instead of trying to improve the manufacturing accuracy, uncertainty quantification when applied to CFD is able to indicate an improved design direction. This book will be of interest to gas turbine manufacturers and designers as well as CFD practitioners, specialists and researchers. Graduate and final year undergraduate students may also find it of use.

These materials mainly include nanocomposites, nanopowders, nanoparticles and nanocoatings. Nanotechnology enables the creation of structures that do not exist in nature, those which cannot be produced by conventional chemistry. Some advantages of this technology are the synthesis of stronger, more adjustable materials as well as lower costs. Nanotechnology is scientific and research development at the atomic, molecular or macromolecular levels in a dimension range of 1 to 100 nm; the fabrication and application of the structures, equipment and systems which involve unique characteristics and new applications because of their small or medium dimensions; and the potential for the control and management at atomic scales. Therefore, nanotechnology involves industrial research and development at atomic, molecular and macromolecular levels. This research aims to create and exploit the structures and systems which involve unique applications due to their small dimensions. The main difference between nanotechnology and other technologies is found within the dimensions and properties of the materials and structures applied to this technology. As a matter of fact, the main difference between these two types of technologies is the presence of base elements, which are indeed the same nanoscale elements with different properties in their nanoscale and larger states. Due to the developed properties of the very fine powders including surface chemistry, compressive properties, optical characteristics and synthetic reactions, as well as an increasing demand for fine powders in industries, a very fine fragmentation is applied in many materials such as: minerals, ceramics, dyes, chemicals, microorganisms, pharmaceuticals and paper manufacturing. This volume mainly discusses the application and development of functional nanomaterials. Some of the functional nanomaterials that were discussed in this volume are titania nanostructures, hybrid nanomaterials based on nanoclays, multifunctional nanomedicine, nanocomposites using polypyrrole, metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, fullerenes and capped nanotubes, graphene, nanocomposite coatings, functionalized carbon nanotube, nanopowders.

In economics, many quantities are related to each other. Such economic relations are often much more complex than relations in science and engineering, where some quantities are independence and the relation between others can be well approximated by linearfunctions. As a result of this complexity, when we apply traditional statistical techniques - developed for science and engineering - to process economic data, the inadequate treatment of dependence leads to misleading models and erroneous predictions. Some economists even blamed such inadequate treatment of dependence for the 2008 financial crisis.To make economic models more adequate, we need more accurate techniques for describing dependence. Such techniques are currently being developed. This book contains description of state-of-the-art techniques for modeling dependence and economic applications ofthese techniques. Most of these research developments are centered around the notion of a copula - a general way of describing dependence in probability theory and statistics. To be even more adequate, many papers go beyond traditional copula techniques andtake into account, e.g., the dynamical (changing) character of the dependence in economics.

Fluid flows are characterized by uncertain inputs such as random initial data, material and flux coefficients, and boundary conditions. The current volume addresses the pertinent issue of efficiently computing the flow uncertainty, given this initial randomness. It collects seven original review articles that cover improved versions of the Monte Carlo method (the so-called multi-level Monte Carlo method (MLMC)), moment-based stochastic Galerkin methods and modified versions of the stochastic collocation methods that use adaptive stencil selection of the ENO-WENO type in both physical and stochastic space. The methods are also complemented by concrete applications such as flows around aerofoils and rockets, problems of aeroelasticity (fluid-structure interactions), and shallow water flows for propagating water waves. The wealth of numerical examples provide evidence on the suitability of each proposed method as well as comparisons of different approaches.

Uncertainty is an inherent feature of both properties of physical systems and the inputs to these systems that needs to be quantified for cost effective and reliable designs. Turbulent combustion sits at the interface of two important nonlinear, multiscale phenomena: chemistry and turbulence. Despite the fact that modeling of turbulent combustion is a subject that has been researched for a number of years, its complexity implies that key issues are still eluding, and a theoretical description that is accurate enough to make turbulent combustion models rigorous and quantitative for industrial use is still lacking. In this book, prominent experts review most of the available approaches in modeling turbulent combustion, with particular focus on the exploding increase in computational resources that has allowed the simulation of increasingly detailed phenomena. The relevant algorithms are presented, the theoretical methods are explained, and various application examples are given. The book is intended for a relatively broad audience, including seasoned researchers and graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics and computational science, engine designers and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) practitioners, scientists at funding agencies, and anyone wishing to understand the state-of-the-art and the future directions of this scientifically challenging and practically important field.

At the dawn of the 21st century, computational stochastic dynamics is an emerging research frontier. This book focuses on advanced computational methods and software tools which can highly assist in tackling complex problems in stochastic dynamic/seismic analysis and design of structures. The book is primarily intended for researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of computational mechanics and stochastic structural dynamics. Nevertheless, practice engineers as well could benefit from it as most code provisions tend to incorporate probabilistic concepts in the analysis and design of structures. The book addresses mathematical and numerical issues in stochastic structural dynamics and connects them to real-world applications. It consists of 16 chapters dealing with recent advances in a wide range of related topics (dynamic response variability and reliability of stochastic systems, risk assessment, stochastic simulation of earthquake ground motions, efficient solvers for the analysis of stochastic systems, dynamic stability, stochastic modelling of heterogeneous materials). Numerical examples demonstrating the significance of the proposed methods are presented in each chapter.

Over the last forty years there has been a growing interest to extend probability theory and statistics and to allow for more flexible modelling of imprecision, uncertainty, vagueness and ignorance. The fact that in many real-life situations data uncertainty is not only present in the form of randomness (stochastic uncertainty) but also in the form of imprecision/fuzziness is but one point underlining the need for a widening of statistical tools. Most such extensions originate in a'softening'of classical methods, allowing, in particular, to work with imprecise or vague data, considering imprecise or generalized probabilities and fuzzy events, etc. About ten years ago the idea of establishing a recurrent forum for discussing new trends in the before-mentioned context was born and resulted in the first International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS) that was held in Warsaw in 2002. In the following years the conference took place in Oviedo (2004), in Bristol (2006) and in Toulouse (2008). In the current edition the conference returns to Oviedo. This edited volume is a collection of papers presented at the SMPS 2010 conference held in Mieres and Oviedo. It gives a comprehensive overview of current research into the fusion of soft methods with probability and statistics.

Among numerical methods applied in acoustics, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is normally favored for interior problems whereas the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is quite popular for exterior ones. That is why this valuable reference provides a complete survey of methods for computational acoustics, namely FEM and BEM. It demonstrates that both methods can be effectively used in the complementary cases. The chapters by well-known authors are evenly balanced: 10 chapters on FEM and 10 on BEM. An initial conceptual chapter describes the derivation of the wave equation and supplies a unified approach to FEM and BEM for the harmonic case. A categorization of the remaining chapters and a personal outlook complete this introduction. In what follows, both FEM and BEM are discussed in the context of very different problems. As modern structures require more critical and complex designs, the need for accurate ways to assess uncertainties in loads, geometry, material properties, manufacturing processes and operational environments has increased. Reliability assessment techniques help to develop safe designs and identify where contributors of uncertainty occur in structural systems. This book provides readers with an understanding of the fundamentals and applications of structural reliability, stochastic finite element method, reliability analysis via stochastic expansion, and optimization under uncertainty. The last decade has witnessed an increasing interest towards the dynamics and control of nonlinear engineering systems from the scientists engaged in nonlinear dynamics and the control engineers. Both groups of people have recognized the importance of interaction between nonlinear dynamics and robust control during their efforts to improve the dynamic performance of engineering systems with uncertainty, which comes from either the random excitations, such as wind and earthquake, or the modelling errors of real systems including their sensors, controllers and actuators. The dynamics and control of nonlinear systems with uncertainty, therefore, is a vital interdisciplinary topic related to both stochastic systems and deterministic systems. This volume contains the papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Dynamics and Control of Nonlinear Systems with Uncertainty, which was sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and held at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, 18-22 September, 2006.
