This edited volume, with contributions from the Computer Aided Engineering for Batteries (CAEBAT) program, provides firsthand insights into nuances of implementing battery models in actual geometries. This book results from the XVIII Spanish-French School'Jacques Louis Lions'on Numerical Simulation in Physics and Engineering, that took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from 25th to 29th June 2018. Welcome to Bavaria - Germany and to the INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR SIMULATION SYMPOSIUM AND MATHEMATICAL MODELLING WORKSHOP. A triennial international conference jointly promoted by Control.Data, GRS and SCS, which takes place at Schliersee, a small town near the Alps. The aim of the Symposium is to cover most of the aspects of nuclear modelling and simulation in theory and practice, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience between different international research groups in this field, and to strengthen the international contact between developers and users of modelling and simulation techniques. On the occasion of the Symposium people of scientific and engineering disciplines will meet to discuss the state-of-the-art and future activities and developments. A large number of contributed papers has been strictly examined and selected by the papers committee to guarantee a high international standard. Much has been written about the general difficulty of developing the models required for model-based control of processes whose dynamics exhibit signif­ icant nonlinearity (for further discussion and references, see Chapter 1). In fact, the development ofthese models stands as a significant practical imped­ iment to widespread industrial application oftechniques like nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC), whoselinear counterpart has profoundly changed industrial practice. One ofthe reasons for this difficulty lies in the enormous variety of'nonlinear models,'different classes of which can be less similar to each other than they are to the class of linear models. Consequently, it is a practical necessity to restrict consideration to one or a few specific nonlinear model classes if we are to succeed in developing, understanding, and using nonlinear models as a basis for practical control schemes. Because they repre­ sent a highly structured extension ofthe class oflinear finite impulse response (FIR) models on which industrially popular linear MPC implementations are based, this book is devoted to the class of discrete-time Volterra models and a fewother, closelyrelated, nonlinear model classes. The objective ofthis book is to provide a useful reference for researchers in the field of process control and closely related areas, collecting a reasonably wide variety of results that may be found in different parts of the large literature that exists on the gen­ eral topics of process control, nonlinear systems theory, statistical time-series models, biomedical engineering, and digital signal processing, among others.

The?eld of applied nonlinear dynamics has attracted scientists and engineers across many different disciplines to develop innovative ideas and methods to study c- plex behavior exhibited by relatively simple systems. Examples include: population dynamics,?uidization processes, applied optics, stochastic resonance,?ocking and?ightformations,lasers,andmechanicalandelectricaloscillators. Acommontheme among these and many other examples is the underlying universal laws of nonl- ear science that govern the behavior, in space and time, of a given system. These laws are universal in the sense that they transcend the model-speci?c features of a system and so they can be readily applied to explain and predict the behavior of a wide ranging phenomena, natural and arti?cial ones. Thus the emphasis in the past decades has been in explaining nonlinear phenomena with signi?cantly less att- tion paid to exploiting the rich behavior of nonlinear systems to design and fabricate new devices that can operate more ef?ciently. Recently, there has been a series of meetings on topics such as Experimental Chaos, Neural Coding, and Stochastic Resonance, which have brought together many researchers in the?eld of nonlinear dynamics to discuss, mainly, theoretical ideas that may have the potential for further implementation. In contrast, the goal of the 2007 ICAND (International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics) was focused more sharply on the implementation of theoretical ideas into actual - vices and systems.

Computational Mind: A Complex Dynamics Perspective is a graduate–level monographic textbook in the field of Computational Intelligence. It presents a modern dynamical theory of the computational mind, combining cognitive psychology, artificial and computational intelligence, and chaos theory with quantum consciousness and computation. The book introduces to human and computational mind, comparing and contrasting main themes of cognitive psychology, artificial and computational intelligence. It presents brain/mind dynamics from the chaos theory perspective, including sections on chaos in human EEG, basics of nonlinear dynamics and chaos, techniques of chaos control, synchronization in chaotic systems and complexity in humanoid robots. These proceedings document the various papers delivered and partially presented at the International Conference “From experimental evidence towards numerical modeling of unsaturated soils,” which was held in Weimar (Germany) during 18-19 September 2003. The conference was organized under the auspices of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the National German G- technical Society (DGGT). The need to understand the behavior of unsaturated soils is becoming exclusively - sential for the geotechnical engineers and designers. In the last three decades many - searchers have made significant contribution to the understanding of the unsaturated soil mechanics. Nevertheless, application of the subject to variety of new problems still - quires our attention. This International conference is a mere attempt to unite researchers and engineers in geotechnical engineering and to discuss about the problems associated with the unsaturated soils. Doing so the objectives of these lecture notes are as follows: - to promote unsaturated soil mechanics for practical application, - to exchange experiences in experimental unsaturated soil mechanics and numerical modeling, - to discuss application of unsaturated soil mechanics to variety of problems. In other words, we could also name these two volumes as “From theory to daily pr- tice”. I would like to extend my deep sense of appreciation as the editor and the Head of the organizing committee, to many persons who have contributed either directly or indirectly to organize the International conference and to finalize these proceedings.
