- Abstract
This book aims at serving the researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress on robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea, in a hybrid format, on December 16–17, 2021. Humankind is getting through the third year of COVID-19 pandemic. While this pandemic has made everyone's life so challenging, it has also expedited transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “the new normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have a consensus about what it is and what is should be like. One thing that is clear is that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing critical roles in this phase transition of our everyday lives. We see last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in the restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses and AI-based online education programs. For better readability, the total of 53 papers are grouped into four chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Design and Robot Application; Chapter III: Sensing, Perception and Recognition; and Chapter IV: Cognition, Autonomy and Intelligence. For those who have research on robot intelligence technology, we believe this book will help them understand the recent robot technologies and applications and enhance their study.

- Abstract
The present book includes a set of selected extended papers from the fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Intelligence (IJCCI 2013), held in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal, from 20 to 22 September 2013. The conference was composed by three co-located conferences: The International Conference on Evolutionary Computation Theory and Applications (ECTA), the International Conference on Fuzzy Computation Theory and Applications (FCTA), and the International Conference on Neural Computation Theory and Applications (NCTA). Recent progresses in scientific developments and applications in these three areas are reported in this book. IJCCI received 111 submissions, from 30 countries, in all continents. After a double blind paper review performed by the Program Committee, only 24 submissions were accepted as full papers and thus selected for oral presentation, leading to a full paper acceptance ratio of 22%. Additional papers were accepted as short papers and posters. A furtherselection was made after the Conference, based also on the assessment of presentation quality and audience interest, so that this book includes the extended and revised versions of the very best papers of IJCCI 2013. Commitment to high quality standards is a major concern of IJCCI that will be maintained in the next editions, considering not only the stringent paper acceptance ratios but also the quality of the program committee, keynote lectures, participation level and logistics.

- Abstract
In essence, the dynamics of real world systems (i.e. engineered systems, natural systems, social systesms, etc.) is nonlinear. The analysis of this nonlinear character is generally performed through both observational and modeling processes aiming at deriving appropriate models (mathematical, logical, graphical, etc.) to simulate or mimic the spatiotemporal dynamics of the given systems. The complex intrinsic nature of these systems (i.e. nonlinearity and spatiotemporal dynamics) can lead to striking dynamical behaviors such as regular or irregular, stable or unstable, periodicity or multi-periodicity, torus or chaotic dynamics. The various potential applications of the knowledge about such dynamics in technical sciences (engineering) are being intensively demonstrated by diverse ongoing research activities worldwide. However, both the modeling and the control of the nonlinear dynamics in a range of systems is still not yet well-understood (e.g. system models with time varying coefficients, immune systems, swarm intelligent systems, chaotic and fractal systems, stochastic systems, self-organized systems, etc.). This is due amongst others to the challenging task of establishing a precise and systematic fundamental or theoretical framework (e.g. methods and tools) to analyze, understand, explain and predict the nonlinear dynamical behavior of these systems, in some cases even in real-time. The full insight in systems'nonlinear dynamic behavior is generally achieved through approaches involving analytical, numerical and/or experimental methods.
