The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) initiated and sponsored an International Symposium on Nonlinear Dynamics in Engineering Systems held in 1989 in Stuttgart, FRG. The Symposium was intended to bring together scientists working in different fields of dynamics to exchange ideas and to discuss new trends with special emphasis on nonlinear dynamics in engineering systems. A Scientific Committee was appointed by the Bureau of IUTAM with the following members: S. Arimoto (Japan), F.L. Chernousko (USSR), P.J. Holmes (USA), C.S. Hsu (USA), G. looss (France), F.C. Moon (USA), W. Schiehlen (FRG), Chairman, G. Schmidt (GDR), W. Szemplinska-Stupnicka (Poland), J.M.T. Thompson (UK), H. Troger (Austria). This committee selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented at the Symposium. As a result of this procedure 78 active scientific participants from 22 countries followed the invitation, and 44 papers were presented in lecture and poster sessions. They are collected in this volume. At the Symposium an exhibition with experiments took place and the movie'An Introduction to the Analysis of Chaotic Dynamics'by E.J. Kreuzer et.al. was presented. This book presents multi-stage feedback control designs for the system with multi-time-scale behaviour both in the continuous time domain and discrete-time domain. Multi-time-scale systems have widely separated clusters of eigenvalues, making the system matrices ill-conditioned. Due to this the direct design of a feedback controller and reduced- or full-order observers for such systems is a challenging task. Hence, the feedback controllers and observers are designed in multiple design stages, i.e. two-stage design for the two-time-scale system and three-stage design for the three-time-scale system. In this book, multi-stage feedback controller and observer designs are proposed for the three-time-scale system to reduce offline and online computational efforts. The applicability of these methods is demonstrated by simulating practical systems like a coal-fired power plant and a nuclear power plant. This book also discusses the design of multi-stage feedback controllers in discrete time. The design of state feedback control for a multi-time-scale system with a lower sampling rate fails to capture information in the fastest (very fast) and fast states. While sampling at a higher rate increases computation time. Thus, the use of single-rate sampling for such systems is unsuitable. Therefore, multi-rate state feedback controllers are designed for the multi-time-scale system, in which slow, fast, and very fast states are sampled at different sampling rates. As slow, fast and very fast states are the decoupled and internal states of the original system, these are estimated by the sequential multi-stage observers. Applications of these multirate designs to the numerical examples are demonstrated and simulations are compared with single-rate sampling methods. The methods suggested in this book result in considerable savings in online and offline computations, reduction in design complexity, and improvement in robustness and closed-loop performance. This book can be beneficial to mathematicians, scientists, researchers and practicing engineers working in this area.

This book contains and summarizes research carried out within the DFG Priority Programme 1897:'Calm, Smooth and Smart - Novel Approaches for Influencing Vibrations by Means of Deliberately Introduced Dissipation'. The contributions help reduce unwanted vibrations by developing novel approaches for influencing them and lead to a “calm, smooth and smart” behaviour of technical units. “Calm” represents the demand to avoid or at least to severely reduce unwanted noise generated by technical installations. “Smooth” ensures a still comfortable and jerk-free operation of them. This book reports on the latest knowledge concerning critical phenomena arising in fluid-structure interaction due to movement and/or deformation of bodies. The focus of the book is on reporting progress in understanding turbulence and flow control to improve aerodynamic / hydrodynamic performance by reducing drag, increasing lift or thrust and reducing noise under critical conditions that may result in massive separation, strong vortex dynamics, amplification of harmful instabilities (flutter, buffet), and flow -induced vibrations. Theory together with large-scale simulations and experiments have revealed new features of turbulent flow in the boundary layer over bodies and in thin shear layers immediately downstream of separation. New insights into turbulent flow interacting with actively deformable structures, leading to new ways of adapting and controlling the body shape and vibrations to respond to these critical conditions, are investigated. The book covers new featuresof turbulent flows in boundary layers over wings and in shear layers immediately downstream: studies of natural and artificially generated fluctuations; reduction of noise and drag; and electromechanical conversion topics. Smart actuators as well as how smart designs lead to considerable benefits compared with conventional methods are also extensively discussed. This book systematically discusses nonlinear interval optimization design theory and methods. Firstly, adopting a mathematical programming theory perspective, it develops an innovative mathematical transformation model to deal with general nonlinear interval uncertain optimization problems, which is able to equivalently convert complex interval uncertain optimization problems to simple deterministic optimization problems. This model is then used as the basis for various interval uncertain optimization algorithms for engineering applications, which address the low efficiency caused by double-layer nested optimization. Further, the book extends the nonlinear interval optimization theory to design problems associated with multiple optimization objectives, multiple disciplines, and parameter dependence, and establishes the corresponding interval optimization models and solution algorithms. This book provides a comprehensive study of multi-stage and multi-time scale design of feedback controllers for linear dynamic systems. It examines different types of controllers as can be designed for different parts of the system (subsystems) using corresponding feedback gains obtained by performing calculations (design) only with subsystem (reduced-order) matrices.The advantages of the multi-stage/multi-time scale design are presented and conditions for implementation of these controllers are established. Complete derivations and corresponding design techniques are presented for two-stage/two-time-scale, three-stage/three-time scale, and four-stage/four-time-scale systems. The techniques developed have potential applications to a large number of real physical systems. The design techniques are demonstrated on examples of mathematical models of fuel cells, especially the proton exchange membrane fuel cell.
