Cells of Immunoglobulin Synthesis documents the proceedings of a symposium on''Cells of Immunoglobulin Synthesis''held at Arden House, on the Harriman Campus of Columbia University from June 9-11, 1978. The meeting was the third of the P & S Biomedical Sciences Symposia. Starting with the opening address on B lymphocyte differentiation and the tolerance problem, the remainder of the book presents the contributions made by researchers at the symposium. These contributions are organized into seven parts. Part I contains studies on immunoglobulin genes, messages, and molecules. Part II presents studies on cellular immunoglobulin production. Part III examines membrane immunoglobulins while Part IV focuses on immunoglobulins as regulatory molecules. Part V deals with lymphocyte hybrids. Part VI examines immunoglobulin idiotypes while Part VII contains papers on the ontogeny of immunoglobulin-synthesizing cells.

Genetic Control of Immune Responsiveness: Relationship to Disease Susceptibility documents the proceedings of an international conference held at Brook Lodge, Augusta, Michigan, May 8-10, 1972. It brings together the detailed experimental evidence on the mechanism of action of specific immune response genes, and shows how the two major classes of immune response genes affect our understanding of basic immunology and antibody formation on the one hand, and of host factors determining disease susceptibility on the other. The book is organized into seven parts that correspond to the seven sessions of the conference. Part I presents a session on how the study of the genetic control of immune responses in guinea pigs and mice has contributed to the development of T cell immunology. Part II presents a session on genetic fine structure of the major (H-2) histocompatibility complex in the mouse. Part III presents a session dealing with the association between the production of homogeneous antibody, or of idiotypic antibody, and immunoglobulin allotypes. Part IV presents a session on the relationship between histocompatibility-linked and allotype-linked immune response genes and antigen-specific receptors on T and B cells. Part V presents a session on animal models of multigenic control of susceptibility to disease. Part VI presents a session on the associations between HL-A type and specific disease entities. Finally, Part VII provides a commentary on the ideas and concepts emerging from the three days of free-ranging discussion.

Genetic Control of Natural Resistance to Infection and Malignancy is a collection of papers presented at the 1980 Proceedings of an International Symposium of the Canadian Society for Immunology held in Montreal, Quebec. It provides information about the different models of genetic resistance to various diseases. The book offers an overview of the genetic determination of the susceptibility or resistance to infection and malignancy. It also discusses the importance of genetic resistance not only in the first-line observation of infections and tumors, but also in chemotherapy and immunotherapy. It then explains the genetic control of resistance to parasitic, bacterial, and virus infections, as well as to tumor growth. It further discusses the genetic control of macrophage differentiation and function.

Ir Genes and Ia Antigens features papers that were presented at the Third Ir Gene Workshop held in Asilomar, California, December 13-16, 1976. The book is organized into seven parts that correspond to the seven sessions held during the workshop. The first session focused on the definition of the I-E and I-C subregions, and the mapping and cellular expression of complementing Ir genes. The second session included papers on the expression of gene products of the I region. The third session covered two major areas: (1) the biochemical characterization and primary structure of la antigens; and (2) the possible carbohydrate nature of la antigenic determinant. The studies presented in the fourth session focused on the role of I-region gene products in cellular interactions. The fifth session discussed the'recognition'functions controlled by the I region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The sixth session featured papers on la-containing T cell factors. Finally, the seventh session examined the properties of T-cell antigen receptors.
