Exercising with Type 1 has many physical and physiological benefits, as it lowers all-cause mortality, resting heart rate, blood pressure, the total daily dose of insulin and improves blood lipid profile, BMI and HbA1c levels. Many physiological markers improve and no adverse effects are promoted by exercise in people with Type 1 Diabetes. Therefore, the American Diabetes Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity weekly, complemented by two or three weekly strength-training sessions. Still, about 63% of people with Type 1 are not physically active, mainly due to fear of exercise-induced hypoglycaemia and glycaemic management challenges. Over the last few years, Type 1 diabetes treatments have improved. The hurdle to manually inject insulin multiple times a day has been removed by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. With an additional glucose monitor and algorithm, this leads to an automated system for insulin delivery, also called artificial pancreas or hybrid closedloop system. The'hybrid'refers to the need for manually administered food boluses and exercise bouts. Commercial systems are FDA-approved or CE-marked but often come with limitations. Many are unwilling to wait for admissions and take on the challenges by using unofficial systems under their responsibility, so-called'do it yourself'systems.
