La conferencia de apertura de la XXVIII edición de Univeristat d'Estiu de Gandia, impartida por la profesora Martin Muñoz, introduce la idea de que la revolución árabe es de hecho una revolución de la juventud. Una generación, menor de 30 años, que ha tenido un acceso masivo a la educación y a los estudios universitarios, pero a la vez ha conocido la exclusión socioeconómica y la falta de posibilidades de desarrollo profesional, pese a su preparación. Se trata de un grupo, muy politizado pero que ha sido excluido de la política. Unos ciudadanos que, según Martín Muñoz,'han perdido el miedo y han decidido conducir su destino por lo cual los cambios son irreversibles'. Además, en este análisis también se tendrá en cuenta el papel de las nuevas tecnologías, y la intervención activa de las mujeres, sobre todo de las más jóvenes.

In recent years, the plight of immigrant children has been in the national spotlight. A primary issue of concern is the experience of child migrants in detention by the U.S. government. The authors in this volume approach the topic of child migrant detention from a range of perspectives. Some authors, particularly those who provide a legal perspective, chronicle the harms of detention, arguing that despite governmental assurances of child protection, detention is fundamentally a state-sanctioned form of violence. The social scientists in the volume have worked closely with detained youth themselves; in these chapters, authors highlight the ways in which youth survive detention, often through everyday acts of resistance and through the formation of temporary relationships. Practitioners including psychologists, activists, and faith leaders look at forms of resistance to detention. From retheorizing psychological interventions for detained youth to forming hospitality homes that act as alternatives to detention, these practitioners highlight ways forward for advocates of youth. At the heart of these narratives lies a crucial debate: the tension between harm-reduction strategies and abolition. This interdisciplinary work brings together voices from the legal realm, the academic world, and the on-the-ground experiences of activists and practitioners. Las tramitaciones del pasado y del presente siguen siendo un lastre para la justicia transicional. Los debates se han cerrado una y otra vez, mientras se conmina a la creación de organizaciones como mediadoras del dolor a través de la facturación.

Este libro reúne textos gestados en el ámbito del Seminario Permanente de Investigación del grupo Sociedad, Historia y Cultura del CIDSE (Universidad del Valle) que, quincenalmente, reúne a los docentes con los estudiantes del Doctorado en Sociología adscritos al grupo. El objetivo es poner en consideración de los lectores algunas reflexiones de orden teórico y metodológico alimentadas por experiencias de investigación, mostrar las vicisitudes de la práctica de la pesquisa social y compartir formas de hacer que han estado por detrás de algunos estudios. La compilación se constituye en una muestra de la pluralidad metodológica que caracteriza hoy a las ciencias sociales. Pero no tanto por la diversa procedencia disciplinar de los autores, la disparidad de los temas tratados o la variedad de perspectivas teóricas, sino porque cada diseño de la estrategia metodológica atiende a las peculiaridades del objeto de estudio y a la manera en que se lo ha construido como problema de investigación. Los capítulos buscan resaltar elementos usualmente excluidos de las presentaciones públicas de los resultados de las investigaciones. Por ejemplo, se hace aquí referencia a las actitudes y a las disposiciones puestas en juego para llevar adelante una pesquisa, como son la apertura a nuevos aprendizajes, por fuera de automatismos y gestos repetidos de forma confiada; la exigencia de capacidad para avanzar a menudo en medio de dudas e inquietudes sobre la adecuación de los pasos dados, o la apuesta por la reflexibilidad permanente, en especial sobre el lugar que ocupa y el papel del investigador mismo.

Este libro aborda el proyecto de Iglesia que los Reyes Católicos concibieron y que decidieron implantar en el reino de Granada, cuya conquista culminaron en 1492. Se trataba de una Iglesia con atributos de un Estado moderno, de carácter nacional, y precursora de lo que veremos en otros países católicos y protestantes a lo largo del siglo XVI. Entre sus características principales se encontraban el patronato real, el derecho de presentación de sus dignidades y beneficios eclesiásticos, así como un extraordinario control sobre sus recursos económicos. Esta obra gira fundamentalmente sobre este último aspecto. Gracias a un enorme volumen de fuentes documentales inéditas, revela el sistema fiscal que la monarquía puso intencionadamente en marcha para restringir el acceso de las élites eclesiásticas -sobre todo, obispos y cabildos catedralicios- a unas rentas propias. Sin embargo, plantea, por encima de todo, las preguntas, cuándo, cómo y por qué fracasó este modelo de financiación, que llevó a la Corona a ceder y a las Iglesias del reino a adoptar un sistema muy similar al que ya existía en las sedes castellanas. A tenor de estos interrogantes, ofrece algunas claves, vinculadas a la crisis dinástica, la malversación de fondos o un cambio de estrategia en la política de evangelización de los moriscos. Todo ello, sin dejar nunca atrás la visión de conjunto, que permita identificar los procesos y las transiciones.

La aceleración de la modernidad tardía, estudiada por los sociólogos P. Virilio, N. Aubert, H. Rosa, afecta a diversas artes como el cine, el vídeo. Partiendo de las teorías sociológicas, el análisis detenido del teatro, considerado habitualmente como un género al margen de este fenómeno, muestra que la representación de la aceleración está cada vez más presente en él. Los autores de este libro, desde distintas perspectivas, analizan las principales características formales así como la tematización de la aceleración en los diálogos, revelando diversas representaciones de la aceleración en los textos dramáticos contemporáneos, principalmente españoles, y en el espectáculo teatral.

El libro “La evaluación de las enseñanzas en los contextos digitales: Nuevas perspectivas y enfoques evaluativos” presenta un conjunto de experiencias y resultados de investigaciones que, sobre la evaluación en contextos digitales, realizaron investigadores de universidades públicas y privadas en diferentes países iberoamericanos, a lo largo de la pandemia del COVID 19, ofreciendo al lector una nueva perspectiva y enfoques de la evaluación de las enseñanzas en los contextos digitales.

Which were the mechanisms by which certain groups were positioned at the margins of national narratives during the nineteenth century, either via their exclusion from these narratives of through their incorporation into them as ‘others'? By engaging with shifting ideas of exclusion and difference, the authors in this book reflect upon the paradoxical centrality of the subaltern at a time when literature was deployed as a tool for nation building. The lasting presence of the Jewish and Moorish legacy, the portrayal of gypsy characters, or the changing notions of femininity in public discourse exemplify the ways in which images of marginal ‘types'played a central role in the configuration of the very idea of Spanishness. ¿Cuáles fueron los mecanismos mediante los que ciertos grupos fueron relegados a los márgenes del relato nacional durante el siglo XIX, bien a través de su exclusión de dichos relatos, bien a través de su incorporación a ellos como'otros'? A story that involves as its main players'workers'and'Walmart'does not usually have a happy ending for labor, so the counternarrative offered by Building Power from Below is must reading for activists and union personnel as well as scholars. In 2008 Walmart acquired a controlling share in a large supermarket chain in Santiago, Chile. As part of the deal Walmart had to accept the unions that were already in place. Since then, Chilean retail and warehouse workers have done something that has seemed impossible for labor in the United States: they have organized even more successful unions and negotiated unprecedented contracts with Walmart.In Building Power from Below, Carolina Bank Muñoz attributes Chilean workers'success in challenging the world's largest corporation to their organizations'commitment to union democracy and building strategic capacity. Chilean workers have spent years building grassroots organizations committed to principles of union democracy. Retail workers'unions have less structural power, but have significant associational and symbolic power. Their most notable successes have been in fighting for respect and dignity on the job. Warehouse workers by contrast have substantial structural power and have achieved significant economic gains. While the model in Chile cannot necessarily be reproduced in different countries, we can gain insights from the Chilean workers'approaches, tactics, and strategies.

Bringing together the analysis of a diverse team of social scientists, this book proposes a new approach to environmental problems. Cutting through the fragmented perspectives on water crises, it seeks to shift the analytic perspectives on water policy by looking at the social logics behind environmental issues. Most importantly, it analyzes the dynamic influences on water management, as well as the social and institutional forces that orient water and conservation policies. The first work of its kind, The Field of Water Policy: Power and Scarcity in the American Southwest brings the tools of Pierre Bourdieu's field sociology to bear on a moment of environmental crisis, with a study of the logics of water policy in the American Southwest, a region that allows us to see the contest over the management of scarce resources in a context of lasting drought. As such, it will appeal to scholars in the social and political sciences with interests in the environment and the management of natural resources.

Este proyecto comenzó por reflexionar sobre los trabajos previos que existían sobre los valores sociales y el deporte. Cabría apuntar que existen numerosas publicaciones en formato de artículo científico-académico, pero desde hacía varias décadas no existían monografías que se acercasen a la interesante interrelación existente entre los ámbitos de los valores sociales y su plasmación en la vertiente deportiva….Dado que el objeto de estudio de que se trata en esta obra es complejo, sistémico y con una enorme capacidad de dinamismo, no cabe circunscribirlo a la lógica del conocimiento especializado. De todo esto, proviene la idea de contar con aportaciones provenientes de distintas disciplinas como la antropología, la psicología social, las ciencias de la actividad física, la pedagogía, la sociología y otras tantas, pero no sólo con la intención de acaparar diferentes ópticas, sino de hacerlas conversar, converger, interaccionar para lograr, como fin último, generar un pensamiento complejo sobre valores sociales y deporte, considerándolos ambos como un binomio compacto. Y acudimos al vocablo compacto, porque apuntamos a que los valores sociales pueden ser analizados y estudiados de forma muy precisa cuando los encontramos materializados en el ámbito deportivo, y considerando que el espacio socializador del deporte es un terreno muy propicio para la educación, la transmisión y el enraizamiento de los valores sociales.Esta monografía cuenta con nueve capítulos, incluyendo esta sección preliminar, en los que tienen cabida muy variados temas en relación al tronco común de valores sociales y deporte. Participan en este trabajo especialistas académicos e investigadores de diferentes universidades con contribuciones de muy distinta orientación y que contribuyen a dar como resultado un libro muy variado y de interesante lectura. Participan en él un total de dieciséis investigadores de diversas universidades e institutos de investigación procedentes de España, Portugal y México. Se incorporan miradas muy diversas sobre el tema, provenientes de distintas disciplinas como la Psicología, las Ciencias de la Actividad Física, la Pedagogía, la Antropología o la Sociología. Youth studies in Latin America and Spain face numerous challenges. Across the globe, states have long aimed to control the movement of people, identify their citizens, and restrict noncitizens'rights through official identification documents. Although states are now less likely to grant permanent legal status, they are increasingly issuing new temporary and provisional legal statuses to migrants. Meanwhile, the need for migrants to apply for frequent renewals subjects them to more intensive state surveillance. The contributors to Paper Trails examine how these new developments change migrants'relationship to state, local, and foreign bureaucracies. The contributors analyze, among other toics, immigration policies in the United Kingdom, the issuing of driver's licenses in Arizona and New Mexico, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and community know-your-rights campaigns. Martina Mauritz analysiert den Umgang der Autoren mit den Gemälden: Sie werden von den Protagonisten der Romane betrachtet und besprochen; sie dienen als Projektionsfläche für Diskussionen, Reflexionen und Erinnerungen; ihre Geheimnisse werden ergründet bzw. es wird versucht, sie zu enträtseln; die Figuren treten aus dem Bild heraus und interagieren mit den Romanfiguren. Dabei wird die jeweilige Thematik in den Romanen vielfach gespiegelt und die Leser können subtile und treffende Neuinterpretationen vieldiskutierter und nie zufriedenstellend gedeuteter Bildkunstwerke entdecken, die sowohl die Malerei als auch die Betrachter in ein neues Licht rücken. Is entrepreneurship a pathway out of poverty? Does creating a business represent a means for improving one's life circumstances? Surprisingly little is known about ventures started by those in circumstances of poverty. This pioneering handbook integrates diverse perspectives from around the world regarding the poverty and entrepreneurship interface. With the prominence of workshops, trainings, and anti-racist books popping up over the past few years, it may seem confusing as to what it really means to engage in deliberate and meaningful learning that challenges the many facets of racism and whiteness.'Untangling Whiteness'directly interrogates the assumption that the teaching and learning about race and whiteness, particularly within the university context, can be condensed to one course, one workshop, or even a few trainings. It is a life-long process that may begin in one university classroom, but must continue as part of who we are as unfinished and undetermined beings. Through a deep and multi-faceted interrogation of racism and white supremacy, this book untangles critical theories of race, whiteness and resistance in an accessible and dialogical manner. It also situates whiteness in Aotearoa, New Zealand, demonstrating the importance of context and location when working to undermine and challenge it. Citizenship Utopias in the Global South is an edited collection of empirical research that explores emergent forms of activism in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in times of multiple crises. In March 2019, ISIS was territorially defeated. ISIS members were captured and detained: men were sent to prison and women and children to camps in northern Syria. This is an unprecedented situation where for the first-time thousands of female members of a terrorist group are detained in a foreign country without access to legal mechanisms, rehabilitation or reintegration measures. What happens to the foreign women (and children) who are not repatriated from the camps? If they are repatriated, are there rehabilitation and reintegration programmes in place that account for the experiences the women had? Most existing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes are gender-neutral; that is, they claim to be universal, and are not tailored specifically to male or female beneficiaries. Yet, typically, these programmes are influenced by implicit gender norms and assumptions, such as that men are violent perpetrators of aggression and women are victims who are peaceful and lack agency. Alongside gender norms, intersecting racial and religious dynamics also shape how governments handle the repatriation, rehabilitation and reintegration of ISIS returnees. This includes racial profiling, the conflation between Islam and extremism and more broadly the rising Islamophobia in many countries, particularly since the ‘War on Terror'. These dynamics lead to an absence of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes specifically designed for women's diverse experiences, which is the subject of this book. Returning Home examines state responses to repatriation, rehabilitation and reintegration of ISIS returnees from an intersectional perspective, with a focus on ISIS women returnees. This book addresses the biased understandings that are built into scholarship and policy responses that reinforce gendered and racialized inequalities. It outlines how these dynamics can be uncovered and redressed by designing policies that are responsive to gender differences, inequalities and harmful norms..

Lawmakers prefer to draw clear distinctions, but biology is characterized by continua: both in terms of how development proceeds within a person and how it differs from other people. However, this does not mean that age limits are arbitrary. This book extends the author's previous research on the Dutch juvenile criminal law, which was founded on the brain development of adolescents and has been in use for more than a decade. The role of age limits in death and life sentences in the US and the new cannabis legislation in Germany are also analyzed in depth. This book tells the story of what happens when the “adventure” of living in Spain turns complicated due to the emergence of care needs derived from loss of autonomy. It investigates the care strategies of retirement migrants that must navigate a foreign welfare system and a different “culture of care”, and how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the difficulties they experience accessing care services and information. The book condenses the results of a 4-year (2019-2022) research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science under the title “Retirement migration and the Social Services” and applies a mixed methods approach that combined statistical analysis of secondary data; telephonic interviews with the coordinators of Social Services in more than 80 Spanish municipalities with a high presence of retirement migrants; ethnographic case studies in four municipalities (observation, interviews, focus groups); and an online survey with social workers.

El origen de esta obra se remite al Tratado de Metodología de las Ciencias Sociales editado por mi colega ya fallecido, Enrique de la Garza Toledo, y por quien esto escribe y fue publicado en su primera edición en 2012 en el marco de una coedición entre el Fondo de Cultura Económica y la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Esa obra tuvo una buena acogida en el ámbito iberoamericano y, después de una reimpresión, la obra actualmente se encuentra prácticamente agotada. Después del fallecimiento de Enrique de la Garza en 2021 y tras los once años transcurridos desde su publicación me pareció que era necesario pensar no tanto en una reedición, sino en una nueva obra dotada de una perspectiva teórica aún más amplia que hiciera justicia tanto a los temas, a las corrientes y a autoras y autores no tratados en su momento, así como a los nuevos enfoques metodológicos surgidos en los últimos años. Es por esta razón que en este libro debía marcarse claramente la distinción con relación al Tratado de Metodología de las Ciencias Sociales no solamente con respecto a su amplitud y variedad, sino también con relación a su título mismo.

La lectura es frecuentemente percibida desde un punto de vista instrumental. Se considera un medio muy eficaz para la alfabetización, adquirir conocimiento de una determinada materia o conseguir un nivel de comprensión lectora suficiente para decodificar un texto de forma efectiva y crítica. Esta concepción conduce a una falta de interés por parte de la sociedad para realizar este ejercicio y, sobre todo, limita el amplio abanico de posibilidades que ofrece. Pocas veces nos detenemos a pensar que leer, lejos de ser un ejercicio pasivo, es un acto performativo –tomando las ideas de Austin acerca de la capacidad creadora de la enunciación– que tiene un impacto fundamental en la identidad del sujeto que lo ejerce. Leer es conocerse a través del otro, explorar los diferentes yoes que cohabitan en nuestro interior, abrirnos al mundo, soñar, creer, crear, comprender, y, por lo tanto, transformar(nos), modificando la propia concepción de quienes somos y, como consecuencia, la forma en que nos vinculamos al mundo y a las personas que lo pueblan. Baste apuntar que, aunque la Historia de la Lectura ya ha sido abordada por la crítica, todavía queda un largo trabajo que hacer focalizando en sus consecuencias. Por lo tanto, se presenta esta monografía para realizar una investigación exhaustiva acerca de la lectura como un ejercicio performativo, focalizando está en tres bloques bien delimitados: importancia de la lectura en el aula, representaciones artísticas sobre la influencia de la lectura en la identidad y las consecuencias de la lectura en el espacio público.
