Set in different national contexts (Brazil, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Laos, Norway, Thailand) and in different social science disciplines, the chapters of this volume aim at questioning anti-trafficking policies and their practical impact on sex work regulation. Many actors, from media to researchers, from nonprofit organizations to law enforcement agencies, from'experts'to'reality tourists', contribute to produce knowledge on trafficking and sexual exploitation and thus to institutionalize it as a category of thought and action; by naming and framing perpetrators and victims, they make trafficking'come true'as a public problem. The book pays particular attention to the way the international expertise produced by these different actors and institutions on sexual exploitation and sex work impacts local control practices, especially with regard to law enforcement. The fight against trafficking as it gets institutionalized and put into practice then appears as a way to reaffirm a gendered and racialized public order.Building analytical bridges between different national contexts and relying on contextualized fieldwork in different countries, the book is of great interest for academics as well as for practitioners and/or activists working on sex and gender issues and migration policies. Global efforts to combat human trafficking are ubiquitous and reference particular ideas about unfreedoms, suffering, and rescue. Trafficking in human beings (THB) has been described as modern slavery. It is a serious criminal activity that has significant ramifications for the human rights of the victims. It poses major challenges to the state, society and individual victims. THB is not a static given but a constantly changing concept depending on societal changes and opinions, economic situations and legal developments. THB occurs both transnationally and within countries. The complexity of THB is such that it requires a wide range of expertise fully to address the phenomenon.Edited by a team of leading international academics, the Routledge Handbook of Human Trafficking will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to THB. Drawing on fifteen years of work in the antislavery movement, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick examines the systematic oppression of men, women, and children in rural India and asks: How do contemporary slaveholders rationalize the subjugation of other human beings, and how do they respond when their power is threatened? More than a billion dollars have been spent on antislavery efforts, yet the practice persists. Why? Unpacking what slaveholders think about emancipation is critical for scholars and policy makers who want to understand the broader context, especially as seen by the powerful. Insight into those moments when the powerful either double down or back off provides a sobering counterbalance to scholarship on popular struggle. Through frank and unprecedented conversations with slaveholders, Choi-Fitzpatrick reveals the condescending and paternalistic thought processes that blind them. While they understand they are exploiting workers'vulnerabilities, slaveholders also feel they are doing workers a favor, often taking pride in this relationship. And when the victims share this perspective, their emancipation is harder to secure, driving some in the antislavery movement to ask why slaves fear freedom. The answer, Choi-Fitzpatrick convincingly argues, lies in the power relationship. Whether slaveholders recoil at their past behavior or plot a return to power, Choi-Fitzpatrick zeroes in on the relational dynamics of their self-assessment, unpacking what happens next. De l'autre, la maternité de substitution – des femmes portant des enfants pour autrui -, est désormais une activité économique considérable. En Inde seulement, elle rapporte plus de 400 millions de dollars par année. Aujourd'hui, plusieurs justifient que le corps des femmes soit transformé en une marchandise sexuelle ou maternelle. D'un côté on exige la décriminalisation ou la règlementation de la prostitution au nom du « travail du sexe ». Du plus vieux métier du monde, la prostitution serait devenue le métier le plus moderne, un métier comme les autres, voire une pratique libératrice. Une femme qui vend son corps à des fins de prostitution ou qui loue son utérus pour donner naissance à un enfant accomplirait une action rationnelle prouvant son « autonomie » voire sa libération postmoderne des stéréotypes patriarcaux. Elle ne serait en aucune façon une victime, mais bien une personne active sachant quels sont les véritables intérêts. En fait, la prostitution et la maternité de substitution ne seraient que des activités « compensatoires pour du travail féminin non rémunéré ». Incarnation de l'aliénation et de la réification, l'actuelle marchandisation du corps des femmes est saisie par la journaliste suédoise Kajsa Ekman non seulement en tant qu'instrumentalisation des unes au profit des autres, mais également dans la dimension dissociative de soi qui la marque.
