On Vulnerability maps out an array of perspectives for critically examining the nature of vulnerability, its unequal patterning across different social groups, alongside the everyday social processes that render us vulnerable – interactions, identity and group dynamics.Each chapter equips the reader with a particular sensitising framework for navigating and questioning what it means to be vulnerable or how people cope amid vulnerability. From deviance, stigma and the spoiling or fracturing of identity, to perspectives such as intersectionality, risk, emotions and the vulnerable body, the book traces the theoretical roots of these different analytical lenses, before applying these through illuminating examples and case studies. Drawing on scholarship across more interpretative, analytic and critical traditions, the chapters combine into a multi-dimensional toolkit which will enable the study of the cultural meanings of vulnerability, the political-economic factors that shape its patterning, with a critical sensibility for ‘unlearning'many assumptions, therefore challenging our sense of who is, or who can be, vulnerable. This book is designed to equip undergraduate and post-graduate students and researchers across the social, health and human sciences, aiding them as they study and question the experiences and structures of vulnerability in our social world.

Que sont devenus les junkies qui ont abreuvé nos imaginaires et nos stéréotypes autour de la drogue pendant plusieurs décennies? Le présent ouvrage montre que cette figure s'est peu à peu diluée dans un nouveau monde des drogues qui brouille les frontières entre le licite et l'illicite, le thérapeutique et le récréatif, le normal et le pathologique, les insiders et les outsiders. Il fait le constat que la médicalisation et le succès de l'addictologie moderne ont profondément reconfiguré le sens des usages de drogues dans nos sociétés et nos vies individuelles. Dans ce nouveau monde de la « chimie sociale » qui organise un vaste continuum d'expériences psychotropiques, l'abstinence n'est plus le seul rapport socialement acceptable aux drogues qui sont désormais instrumentalisées dans de multiples politiques de l'individu. Sur la base d'enquêtes empiriques et de travaux socio-historiques, l'ouvrage est organisé autour de cinq chapitres : un survol historique pour qualifier l'évolution des usages jusqu'à la révolution addictologique, une analyse de l'expérience contemporaine des drogues du point de vue des usagers, une analyse des situations floues entre médicaments et drogues chez les insiders, une étude de la médicalisation des usagers d'opiacés traditionnels dans les programmes de substitution, et enfin une plongée chez les « grands chroniques » pris en charge dans les communautés thérapeutiques qui marquent un point limite de la médicalisation des drogues.

Originally published in 2004. Exclusion is a popular area of sociological research, with much analysis pointing towards survival practices and inclusion mechanisms as ways to cope with and confront exclusion. However, the question of what it means to act and how it is possible to do so from a vulnerable situation has yet to be properly addressed. This resourceful volume takes on this challenge, examining how to react and the measures to employ in instances of material and symbolic deprivation. The volume of studies into desistance has grown dramatically in recent years. Much of this research has focused on the internal dynamics of desistance such as decision-making, choice and restraint.
