Based on a study among higher-educated adult children of lower-class Turkish and Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands, this open access book explores processes of identification among social climbers with ethnic minority backgrounds. Using both survey data and open interviews with these ‘minority climbers', the study details the contextual and temporal nature of identification. The results illustrate how ethnicity is contextual but have tangible and inescapable effects at the same time. Also the findings call for a more reflexive use of terms like ethnic ingroup/outgroup and bonding/bridging. Overall, the book helps us understand the emergence of middle-class segments that articulate their minority identities and as such it will be of great interest to academics, policy makers and all those interested in processes of integration and/or diversity.

First published in 1997, this study aims, first, to enlarge upon the understanding of race and ethnicity through a culturalist-comparative frame of analysis, instead of the standard quantitative and political-economy approaches. Secondly, to analyse in systematic form the religious constitution of sociocultural life.Ethnic and race relations are examined in reference to the cultural system of the society, which is conceived in terms of three interrelated aspects of the assimilative process: cultural assimilation, concerning dominant-minority cultural relations; psychosocial assimilation, concerning the question of identity; and biological assimilation, concerning intermarriage. The U.S. and Brazilian cultural systems are contrasted as ideal types of'cultural separatism'and'cultural integration', respectively. Against current thinking, it is argued that the former type crystallizes interethnic conflict and inequality, while the latter is a prerequisite for the full social inclusion of society's members. Finally, the dominant religion and religious culture of each society are addressed as the critical structuring force of social and intergroup relations.

This book explores the understudied and often overlooked subject of African presence in India. It focuses on the so-called Sidis, Siddis or Habshis who occupy a unique place in Indian history. The Sidis comprise scattered communities of people of African descent who travelled and settled along the western coast of India, mainly in Gujarat, but also in Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Lanka and in Sindh (Pakistan) as a result of the Indian Ocean trade from the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries. The work draws from extant scholarly research and documentary sources to provide a comprehensive study of people of African descent in India and sheds new light on their experiences. By employing an interdisciplinary approach across fields of history, art, anthropology, religion, literature and oral history, it provides an analysis of their negotiations with cultural resistance, survivals and collective memory. The author examines how the Sidi communities strived to construct a distinct identity in a new homeland in a polyglot Indian society, their present status, as well as their future prospects.The book will interest those working in the fields of history, sociology and social anthropology, cultural studies, international relations, and migration and diaspora studies.

Die darauf aufbauende grundlegende Typologisierung von Zugehörigkeitspraxis im Alltag stellt einen innovativen Beitrag zur sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskussion um soziale Zugehörigkeiten dar.

Throughout their relatively short history, lesbian and gay movements in the United States have endured searing conflicts over whether to embrace assimilationist or liberationist strategies. Sie gilt offensichtlich unhinterfragt als gegeben und unproblematisch, und die Sozialwissenschaften haben ihr des­ halb lange Zeit wenig Interesse entgegengebracht. Nach einer langen Phase, in der die Staatsbürgerschaft schon völlig von der Tagesordnung verschwunden schien, hat sich dies in den vergangenen Jahren grundlegend geändert: Staats­ bürgerschaft steht inzwischen im Zentrum wichtiger gesellschaftspolitischer Debatten. Eines der zentralen Problemfelder stellt das Verhältnis von Staatsbür­ gerschaft und Immigration dar. In Deutschland hat sich die Soziologie merkwür­ digerweise fast vollständig aus dieser Diskussion herausgehalten - von einer Auseinandersetzung um Staatsbürgerschaft kann in der Disziplin keine Rede sein. Zugleich hat die politische Diskussion um das Verhältnis von Staatsbürger­ schaft und Immigration Hochkonjunktur. Sie ist gekennzeichnet durch ein kultu­ ralistisches Übergewicht, und auf beiden Seiten des politischen Spektrums ran­ ken Mythen und Legenden um die Rechtsinstitution der Staatsbürgerschaft. Eine Einmischung in diese Debatte aus der Perspektive einer kritischen Soziologie ist bisher nicht zu vernehmen. Diese Lücke gilt es zu füllen. Die folgende Studie setzt sich deshalb zum Ziel, sowohl die wissenschaftliche Diskussion voranzu­ bringen als auch zur Versachlichung der politischen Diskussion beizutragen. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen Biographien von Jugendlichen ausländischer Herkunft in der Schweiz. Die Auswertung der erzählten Lebensgeschichten zeigt, dass insbesondere das Erlangen einer höheren Stellung im sozialen Raum, aber auch die Suche nach Zugehörigkeit und Anerkennung sowie Erfahrungen von sozialem Ausschluss und Diskriminierung wichtige Themen in den Biographien der zweiten Generation darstellen. Erkennbar wird ein komplexes Ineinandergreifen von sozialen Aufstiegs- und Ausschlussprozessen, das sich je nach sozialem Ort, an dem sich die Jugendlichen befinden, anders gestaltet. Die Analysen der erzählten Lebensgeschichten machen deutlich, wie und durch welche Mechanismen soziale Positionen erlangt, zugeteilt und reproduziert werden. Damit rücken die Fragen ins Zentrum, wie sich'Klasse'und'nationale Herkunft'als Kategorien sozialer Ungleichheit im biographischen Verlauf verschränken und in welchem Verhältnis individuelles Handeln und strukturell bestimmte Möglichkeiten zueinander stehen.

Despite decades of policy interventions and awareness raising programmes, migration and mobility continue to give rise to tensions and questions of how to live together in a culturally diverse world. Managing Cultural Change takes a new approach to these challenges, re-examining responses to migration and mobility as part of a process of managing wider cultural change. Presenting research from a range of settings, from liberalising India, global workplaces in Asia, and migrant youth culture in Sydney, this book explores the manner in which cultural change disturbs established frames of reference. In considering affective responses to these liminal moments of disruption, it argues that adaptive strategies such as'demarcating difference'and're-placing home', that is, reasserting belonging, are deployed in order to reclaim a sense of synchronicity within the self and with a transforming external environment. With attention to the prevalence and durability of the processes and tensions inherent in cultural change, the author also examines the intercultural, or cosmopolitan, competencies developed in interaction with difference, and whether it is possible to'teach'people these skills in order to re-find'cultural fit'and manage change in a constantly shifting world. Immigration from Eastern Europe to the United States has grown significantly in the last few decades. While Asian and Latin American immigrations have been central to the discourse of migration to the US, the rapid growth of Eastern European immigrants has received insufficient attention. Anders als klassische Einwanderungsländer steuerte die Bundesrepublik die Zuwanderung nicht nach Kriterien der Qualifikation. Dies führte zur Konzentration ethnischer Gruppen in Großstädten, meist in Stadtteilen mit hoher Armutsquote. Stefan Luft sieht darin die Hauptursache für die unzureichende Integration der Migranten sowie deren mangelnden Spracherwerb. Am Beispiel der türkischen Zuwanderung zeigt er, dass die Politik lange die Bewahrung von Herkunftsidentitäten in den Vordergrund stellte, heute jedoch zunehmend Integrations- und Anpassungsleistungen fordert. Er plädiert für einen migrationspolitischen Realismus – jenseits von Skandalisierung und Multikulturalismus.

First published in 1998. Part of the Children of Poverty series which includes studies on the effects of single parenthood, the feminization of poverty and homelessness, this volume looks at the shortcomings of the child protection services in relation to young people in foster care. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of systemic shortcomings on the domestic and educational conditions of youth in the foster care system. In addition to studying the impact of systemic failures on foster care arrangements, the study also examined the impact of the protection services'failure to work more closely with youth, and with teachers on student educational outcomes.
