The future has become a problem for the present. Almost every critical issue is now understood and experienced through the prism of the future since this is the primary focus for the playing out of crises. Senses of the Future offers a wide-ranging discussion of theories of the future. The identity politics of the householder Naths (Yogis), on the one hand, is one of the oldest and most persistent identity assertions in Bengal and Assam. On the other, for an array of reasons, the identity assertion of the householder Naths of Bengal and Assam has failed to draw academic curiosity so far. Since the late nineteenth century, a segment of the Naths, largely educated and elite, has been crafting their identity as Brahman grounded on their “origin myth”, negotiating with the British colonial administration through different census enumerations, as well as internal social reforms. One of the primary reasons for their current lagging is that the Naths never politicised their identity and demands, and did not mobilise themselves in the democratic political arena.

Gangstalking is a novel persecutory belief system. Victims believe they are harassed by a group of unknown stalkers, perhaps connected with the mafia, CIA or law enforcement. Victims describe themselves as targeted individuals (TIs). People who identify as TIs have perpetrated mass shooting incidents as revenge or to draw attention to the problem. Social media has allowed the concept to spread globally and there are millions of posts about gangstalking online. However there are only a handful of published academic research studies of gangstalking. This book summarizes current academic research about gangstalking, with a focus on the ethical dilemmas involved in researching this unique concept. Gangstalking research is necessarily intersectional, spanning the fields of criminology and law enforcement; counselling; psychology; and social media; but does not clearly fit into any one defined field. Understanding gangstalking involves exploring ethical issues and paradoxes, and can also lead to new theories illuminating the puzzle of paranoia. Sie zeigt dabei Wege zu einer Dekolonialisierung von Wissenschaft und Hochschulbildung auf, reflektiert die ethnologische Fachtradition und deren methodisches Arbeiten und diskutiert das allgemeine Potential einer Interkulturalisierung von Wissenschaft. Social robots have significantly advanced in capabilities and availability, gradually becoming part of everyday life. Their new interactive features are relevant to the struggling care sector. As Western societies age, the demand for care services rises, yet the workforce does not grow at the same rate. This book explores the potential of social robots to support the workforce and enhance the well-being of residents in care homes. Using a socio-informatics approach, this research investigates how residents and caregivers interact with social robots, examines and facilitates their appropriation, and provides insights into the development of the robots'software and hardware. The research and development were carried out collaboratively in care homes with the people who work and live there. The findings indicate that social robots can be beneficial in care homes. They broaden the options for social care workers and, when integrated into daily routines, can provide brief respite periods. Additionally, they positively impact residents by engaging them in cognitive and physical activities. However, the robots can only assist, and not replace, care workers.

Como toda experiencia nacional, la Argentina tuvo un punto de partida, impulsado por una clase social. El origen rastrea dicho comienzo, brindando una explicación científica del surgimiento de las relaciones capitalistas en la región del Río de la Plata. Con ello, expone la primera forma que asumió la burguesía rioplatense: los hacendados de la campaña de Buenos Aires a fines del siglo XVIII. Esa misma clase que protagonizó la Revolución de Mayo, en 181 O, y que luego construyó el Estado nacional. En el espacio académico, hablar de clases sociales y explotación en este período es una blasfemia inaceptable. Este libro, en cambio, desafía ese consenso con evidencia empírica y plantea un fuerte debate contra esa visión dominante, que supone una pampa colonial'campesina'y edulcorada, con'pastores'y'labradores'que mantienen relaciones reciprocitarias. También desmiente a la izquierda y al nacionalismo, que suponen la existencia de una clase terrateniente, improductiva y parasitaria, incapaz de constituirse en sujeto revolucionario. The police response to protests erupting on America's streets in recent years has made the militarization of policing painfully transparent. Yet, properly demilitarizing the police requires a deeper understanding of its historical development, causes, and social logics. As transferências das políticas públicas brasileiras no continente africano foram acompanhadas de exportações de máquinas e equipamentos e por investimentos diretos para o desenvolvimento de infraestruturas, geração de energia e exploração agrominerais. A estratégia do bloco no poder no Brasil foi orientada à criação de um mercado mundial do etanol, em parceria estratégica com os EUA, e à produção de commodities agrominerais na África, em parceria estratégica com o Japão e com outros países do Norte. O Brasil exportou as contradições presentes no país para o continente africano, concentração de renda e poder pela burguesia agrária, conflitos com os camponeses, um modelo de desenvolvimento insustentável. Foi a luta de classe dos trabalhadores rurais e movimentos sociais de Moçambique em aliança estratégica com os trabalhadores rurais e movimentos sociais do Brasil e do Japão e a sociedade civil internacional que levaram ao fracasso do projeto de exploração agrícola intensiva e extensiva no Norte de Moçambique. This book studies how transnational migrants create a sense of home in their host countries. It draws on case studies of Sri Lankan migrants living in Australia to argue that'home'is an existential experience rather than a fixed entity. U.S.-born Mexicans in New York City have achieved perhaps the biggest single generation jump in mobility in American immigration history. In 2020, 42-percent of second-generation U.S.-born Mexican men and 49-percent of U.S.-born Mexican women in New York City had graduated from college – versus a 13-14-percent second-generation college graduation rate for most places for most studies done in recent decades. How did U.S.-born Mexicans in New York City achieve such remarkable mobility? In Dreams Achieved and Denied, sociologist Robert Courtney Smith examines the laws, policies, and individual and family practices that promoted – and inhibited – their social mobility. For over twenty years, Smith followed the lives and mobility of nearly one hundred children of Mexican immigrants in New York City. Smith's longitudinal, ethnographic data enabled him to intimately describe how specific mechanisms blocked or promoted mobility for years as his participants moved from adolescence through early adulthood and into established adulthood. Smith documents how having or gaining legal status made certain New York City or New York State policies and practices more efficacious in supporting individual and family efforts and strategies for mobility. Such immigrant-inclusive and mobility-promoting measures include enabling undocumented people to attend public colleges at in-state tuition rates, and later to get driver's licenses, offering healthcare to all in New York City, and the City's subway and school choice systems, which enabled students to attend better schools or take opportunities outside their neighborhoods. Smith finds that keeping the immigrant bargain – whereby children of immigrants redeem their parents'sacrifice by doing well in school, helping their parents and siblings, and becoming “good” people (in their parents'words) – helped them towards better adult outcomes and lives. Having mentors, picking academically stronger schools and friends, and using second chance mechanisms also promoted more adult mobility. However, lacking legal status blocked mobility, by preventing them from benefiting from these same mobility-promoting city and state policies, from mentors, or from working hard and keeping the immigrant bargain. ​ Dreams Achieved and Denied deeply analyzes the historic upward mobility of U.S.-born Mexicans in New York City. Itcounters the dominant story research and public discourse tell about Mexican mobility in the U.S. and shows how thoughtful public policy can improve the lives of young immigrants and families.
