Curious about the images of the city that have been evolving in the different social sciences, we did what academics often do in such a situa­ 1 tion: we set up a seminar on'Images of the City in the Social Sciences.'From the start, we counted on the help of specialists in other fields to pursue their interests. Of the persons who agreed to participate, all but two came from the United States, and their analyses, in the main, reflect the experience of Western countries and the United States. In our formal instructions to our collaborators, we took fi>r granted that a variety of images of the city could be found or inferred in their fields of expertise. We asked them to identify these images and their functions, to explain how and why they have changed over time, and to relate these images to the distinct intellectual traditions and techniques-analytical or otherwise-in their respective fields. The definition of image was left to the judgment of the participants.

1,7 Millionen Kinder unter fünfzehn Jahren lebten Ende 2008 in Deutschland von der Grundsicherung für Arbeitsuchende, dem so genannten Hartz IV. Damit lag die Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Altersgruppe bis 15 Jahre, von dieser Grundsicherung abhängig zu sein, bei über 13 Prozent, für Kinder unter drei Jahren sogar bei 21 Prozent. Ende 2008 lebte in Deutschland also mehr als jedes fünfte Kind unter drei Jahren von einem gerade einmal existenzsichernden Einkommen oder auch in Armut. Es gibt wenige sozialpolitische Themen in Deutschland, die in den letzten Jahren so viel und so emotionsgeladen diskutiert wurden, wie die Armut von Kindern. Angesichts der Menge an Nachrichten sowie öffentlicher und politischer Diskussionen geht Eva Reichwein der Frage nach, ob das präsentierte Bild mit der Wirklichkeit übereinstimmt oder ob Kinderarmut nur ein skandalträchtiges Thema ist, das von Politik oder Presse missbraucht wird, um Aufmerksamkeit zu erheischen.

Städte sind neuerdings wieder vermehrt Gegenstand soziologischer Forschung. Dies ist Anlass der vorliegenden kritischen Bilanzierung von deutsch- und englischsprachigen Gemeindestudien über Städte. Vier eigene Untersuchungen der neuen Stadt Wolfsburg in einem Zeitraum von mehr als 50 Jahren bilden den Hintergrund einer Auseinandersetzung mit Potenzialen und Begrenzungen des Gemeindestudien-Ansatzes. Erörtert wird, welchen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Stadt als einem lokalen Lebenszusammenhang Gemeindestudien geleistet haben und welche Perspektiven ihnen zukünftig zukommen können.

Das Thema'Forschung'hat Konjunktur - allerdings fällt auf, dass in den Diskursen relativ wenig Bezug auf eine theoretische Verortung genommen wird. Eine Selbstreflexion der Wissenschaft Sozialer Arbeit findet kaum statt. Hier setzt dieser Band an, in dem wesentliche Dimensionen'kritischen Forschens'erarbeitet werden. Es geht um die Formulierung gesellschaftskritischer Perspektiven, die sich im Erkenntnisinteresse, in der Bestimmung des Analysegegenstandes und den daran anschließenden Fragestellungen theoretisch-inhaltlich konkretisieren. Und es erfolgt eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Kontextbedingungen, dem Forschungsprozess selbst und den daraus resultierenden Positionierungen.
