Following Marx's own itinerary from Paris to London, from politics to the critique of political economy, The Marx of Communism delves into a creatively unfolding international debate on the democracy-communism relation, while supporting a 21st century communism as a social alternative to capitalism. Taking into consideration Marx's analysis of communism both as a movement and a social formation, this study focuses on the dialectics of transition from capitalism to communism. Dealing with communism as the outcome of a long-term cultural and political process, the author defends Marxian communism as the open-ended constitution of a self-governed demos, whose citizens create their own way of life on the ground of a stateless and classless society. From this point of view, the end of the state does not mean the end, but the revival of politics in terms of a communist bios. Reshaping their collective and personal values and setting limits to the production/technology dynamics of their economy, this book argues, the citizens of a communist polis form a promising antithesis to the private individuals of a capitalist society.

Die Reflexion der Begriffe Macht und Herrschaft ist Sache der Soziologie und weist doch über die Soziologie hinaus: Sie zählt zu den Angelegen­heiten, die, nach dem klassischen Begriff, als rei publicae das Gemeinwesen betreffen. Die Soziologie ist Teil des Gemeinwesens; und das Gemeinwesen ist Gegenstand ihres wissenschaftlichen Interesses. Was das Gemeinwesen über sich, über die bestehenden Macht- und Herrschaftsverhältnisse zu wissen vermag, liegt auch – und gerade – in der Verantwortung der Soziologie. Ein Gemeinwesen, das die Fähigkeit nicht mehr besäße, die politisch-ökonomischen Prozesse und die sie bestimmenden Macht- und Herrschaftsbeziehungen begrifflich fassbar zu machen und kritisch zu beurteilen, und zwar auf einem analytischen Niveau, dessen Komplexität der Komplexität dieser Prozesse adäquat ist, wäre ein Gemeinwesen auf dem Weg der res publica amissa. Das Gemeinwesen sähe sich der latenten Gefahr ausgesetzt, den Profiteuren der Ungenauigkeiten und Vagheiten anheimzufallen. Und die Soziologie würde sich selbst untreu. Soziologische Grundlagenforschung ist daher in beider Sinne unverzichtbar – und dazu gehört gerade die Reflexion der Begriffe Macht und Herrschaft, die im vorliegenden Band in fünf Rubriken dokumentiert wird: Herrschaft und Rationalität; Ordnungen der Macht; Charisma in der Massengesellschaft; Regierungsweisen; Die andere Seite der Biopolitik.

This book analyzes key aspects of Marx's Capital with an eye towards its relevance for an understanding of issues confronting us in the 21st Century. The contributions to this volume suggest that while aspects of Marx's original analysis must be adjusted to take into account changes that have occurred since its initial publication in 1867, his overall perspective remains necessary for understanding the nature of crises in 21st century. Part I emphasizes the central concepts Marx employed in Capital, including exploitation, capital accumulation, commodity fetishism, and his use of dialectics as a method for baring the underlying relations that define capitalism. Parts II and III extend that focus by addressing the concept of value, fictitious capital, credit and financialization. Parts IV and V offer analyses of several concrete manifestations of contemporary crises from national contexts (Europe, Latin America, China, and the United States). The volume argues that we have to combat the imperatives of capitalism to move towards a more humane and egalitarian future.

This is a specially commissioned set of essays on the themes of Max Weber, culture, anarchy and politics. It presents the first complete publication (in both English and German) of a series of letters written by Max Weber in 1913 and 1914 during his stays at the anarchist settlement of Ascona. The letters show Weber debating with the issues of free love, eroticism, patriarchy, anarchism, terrorism, pacifism, political and personal convictions and power. These themes are taken up by the contributors in a wider discussion of the relation of culture and politics.

This volume examines the transformation of politics and social movements at various levels. Starting with a transformation of identity within social movements, it goes on to discuss changes in the scale of social movement mobilisation. The impact of social movements on the state is also considered, with a particular focus upon the ways in which the state is able to incorporate apparently radical political agendas. Finally, the book examines those intellectual and theoretical debates stimulated by recent political transformations.

Der Islam in Deutschland blickt auf eine über 50jährige Geschichte zurück, die wesentlich auf die Arbeitsmigration aus islamisch geprägten Ländern zurückgeht. Obwohl die Zahl der Muslime und ihre religiösen Organisationen bereits seit den 1970er Jahren stark zugenommen hat, sind islamkonnotierte Themen und Debatten erst zu Beginn der 2000er Jahre zu verzeichnen. Zum einen ist diese Entwicklung im Kontext globaler und europäischer Prozesse zu bewerten. Zum anderen aber auch die Tatsache, dass infolge der quantitativen und qualitativen Relevanz der muslimischen Minorität die Politik den Islam im integrations- und bildungspolitischen Kontext nicht mehr ausblenden konnte. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser ambivalenten Entwicklung hat sich der vorliegende Band zum Ziel gesetzt, eine Bestandsaufnahme der 50jährigen islamischen Geschichte im Kontext der Arbeitsmigration vorzulegen. In fünf zentralen Themenschwerpunkten soll das Leben der Muslime in Deutschland analysiert werden, um ein Gesamtbild zuerarbeiten.

Das Verhältnis von Politik und Zeit ist in der Politikwissenschaft oftmals vernachlässigt. Stefan Vorderstraße legt den Fokus auf die Bedeutung von Zeit in Strukturen und Prozessen der Politikberatung. Politische Entscheidungsträger sehen sich unter den Bedingungen einer stets gegenwärtig entscheidungsabhängigen und ungewissen Zukunft dem Problem ausgesetzt, kollektiv verbindliche Entscheidungen treffen zu müssen. Politik ist zudem mit einem Koordinierungsbedarf konfrontiert, dem sie über Politikberatung zu begegnen versucht. Politische Entscheidungsprozesse und politikwissenschaftliche Analyseansätze konfrontiert er mit typischen Charakteristika der zunehmend beschleunigten Gesellschaft. Er plädiert für eine kombinierte Betrachtung von Sach-, Sozial- und Zeitdimension und leistet einen grundlegenden Beitrag zum Verständnis der Bedeutung von Zeit in und für Politikberatung.

Das Buch ist eine Einführung für Studierende der Sozialwissenschaften (Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft, Sozialpsychologie) in das breite Spektrum sozialwissenschaftlicher Konflikttheorien. Alle Beiträge führen mit ihrem einheitlichen Aufbau verständlich in komplexe Theorien ein und demonstrieren deren Anwendung anhand einer exemplarischen Konfliktanalyse. Der Band liefert einen ideengeschichtlichen und systematischen Überblick über verschiedene soziologische, politikwissenschaftliche und psychologische Konflikttheorien. Konflikttheorien haben dabei keinen eigenständigen Status, sondern sind in andere Theorien als deren Aussagen über Konflikte integriert. Die einzelnen Beiträge, die in die Theorien einführen, sind einheitlich strukturiert und verfügen zudem über ein detailliertes und kommentiertes Literaturverzeichnis. Neben der Einführung in die Theorien demonstrieren die Beiträge auch deren Anwendungsmöglichkeit, indem sie exemplarisch einen Konflikt analysieren.

Das deutsche Regierungssystem stellt eine Kombination von Wettbewerbsdemokratie und Verhandlungsdemokratie dar. Zwar wird auf Bundes- wie auf Länderebene parlamentarisch regiert, aber Parteienwettbewerb und Mehrheitsprinzip kommen nur in einem sehr einge-schränkten Maße zum Zuge. Der deutsche Föderalismus, die Koalitionsregierungen auf Bun-des- und auf Länderebene sowie korporatistische Arrangements erzeugen Verhandlungszwän-ge, die an die Stelle des einfachen Mehrheitsentscheids treten. Ausgehend von der These, das deutsche Regierungssystem erzeuge deshalb Risiken einer Selbstblockade, wollen die Beiträge in diesem Band klären, ob diese Einschätzung zutrifft, über welche Techniken der Kompro-mißbildung in dem verflochtenen Regierungssystem Deutschlands politische Entscheidungen zustande kommen und wie diese Entscheidungen im Hinblick auf ihre sachliche Qualität und Legitimation zu beurteilen sind.

The publication series results from cooperation between the Nether­ lands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI, The Hague) and the Flemish Population and Family Study Centre (CBGS, Brussels). This 1995 edition is the 111h in the series. In 1995, the NIDI celebrates its 25th anniversary as the Dutch national demographic institute, making it a special year for Dutch demography. The contents of this publication obviously highlights this event as most articles selected for this edition are written by Dutch or NIDI related scholars. The article'Ageing and the demand for care: scenario studies for Europe'by Hanna van Solinge and Jenny de Jong Gierveld concerns a comparative study with respect to the consequences of ageing populations for the infrastructure of care for the elderly. It presents results of a scenario study on future developments in demand and supply of elderly care services for a selected number of European countries, summarizing an extensive study on the impact of ageing populations on the socio-medical system conducted by the authors on behalf of the European Population Committee of the Council of Europe.

Global Instability: Uncertainty and New Visions in Political Economy presents a series of papers that address the political consequences of globalization for states and their populations, while exploring the issue of alternatives to the model of globalization we are presently experiencing. The focus moves from the world of international agreements to the national and sub-national dilemmas that are posed by attempting to manage a set of global developments within a given territory. The initial chapter, by Daniel Drache, explores a still-born post-war international organization, the International Trade Organization, that offers a different vision of how a globally integrated economy might operate. A number of papers then explore the challenges posed by today's globalization, including currency instability in an environment of financial deregulation, the rights conferred on investors by the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the progressive liberalization of trade in services built into the General Agreement on Trade in Services.

Despite extensive theoretical debates over the utility of'political opportunities'as an explanation for the rise and success of social movements, there have been surprisingly few serious empirical tests. Contention in Context provides the most extensive effort to date to test the model, analyzing a range of important cases of revolutions and protest movements to identify the role of political opportunities in the rise of political contention. With evidence from more than fifty cases, this book explores the role of the state in protest, the frequent overemphasis on political opportunities in recent research, and the extent to which opportunity models ignore the cultural and emotional triggers for collective action. By examining new directions in the study of protest and contention, this book shows that although political opportunities can help explain the emergence of certain kinds of movements, a new strategic language can ultimately tell us far more.
