This book will make the case for the introduction of a universal basic income (UBI). The structural logic of the digital economy as presently constituted widens inequality and, through its use of automation for increasingly complex, as well as mundane, tasks, threatens jobs. The book will investigate the extent of this disruption to traditional labour markets and of individual livelihoods, and argue that alternative means of supporting people financially, like UBI, can mitigate the digital economy's most baleful impacts. The book will also highlight the positive social and environmental benefits that would accrue from the introduction of UBI, as unconditional financial support would reduce workers'anxiety in insecure labour markets, and the expending of valuable resources would be lessened if energy consumption was determined by society's needs rather than by the requirements of labour markets tasked primarily with maximising employment. An explanation as to why arguments against its introduction on the grounds of cost and its supposed encouraging of idleness, are, while superficially compelling, ultimately without foundation, will form the centrepiece of the concluding political argument for UBI.

Die Beiträge in diesem Band spiegeln den Stand der Reflexions- und Forschungsprozesse an der Fakultät Gestaltung der TH Würzburg-Schweinfurt, der HBKsaar und der New Design University in St. Pölten. Sie repräsentieren einen Prozess der Aufklärung, dessen Prüfstein Walter Benjamins Frage ist, wie sich ›die Art und Weise der Sinneswahrnehmung‹ geschichtlich gewachsener Kollektive durch neue Medientechnologien verändert.

This book offers a comparative perspective on the technological, economic, and political aspects of Internet development in the post-Soviet countries. In doing so, international experts analyze similarities and differences in various countries throughout the chapters.The volume consists of two parts. The chapters of the first part examine the post-Soviet area as a whole. The second part includes specific case studies on the development of the Internet, either in individual countries or in groups of countries. Countries analyzed are Estonia, Ukraine, Russia as well as three Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Topics covered in the volume include, but are not limited to measurement, dynamics, and structure of each national Internet audience; the history of the Internet in the post-Soviet countries; development of infrastructure; Internet regulation and institutional aspects; online markets such as telecommunications, online advertising, e-commerce, and digital content; social and cultural aspects; as well as the transformation of the national media systems. This book is a must-read for students, researchers, and scholars of political science and economics, as well as policymakers and practitioners interested in a better understanding of Internet development in the post-Soviet area.

In the context of the (digital) transformation of economy and society, the technology acceptance of the population is increasingly influenced by a perceived loss of control through new technologies. Loss of control is defined in this volume as a multi-causal, multi-modal and cyclical process of transition of control and conceptually brought together in a multi-dimensional heuristic model. The results of a first quantitative-empirical analysis for Baden-Württemberg based on this model confirm that loss of control is a central factor influencing technology acceptance, but is perceived differently by different socio-demographic groups.

Die mit der Ausbreitung digitaler Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien verbundenen gesellschaftlichen Transformationen haben nicht nur Auswirkungen auf die Adressat•innen, Professionellen und Organisationen der Sozialen Arbeit, sondern gleichfalls auf die disziplinäre Soziale Arbeit, indem neue soziale Phänomene, Forschungsfragen und neue forschungsmethodische Ansätze entstehen. Darüber hinaus beschleunigt die Digitalisierung die Quantität an Publikationen und die wissenschaftliche Wissensproduktion in der Disziplin ist kaum noch zu überblicken. Zu welchen Themen in Deutschland geforscht oder publiziert wird und wie viel, ist kaum auszumachen. So ist eine Forschung über Forschung, die das Ausmaß und das Volumen der Themen in der Sozialen Arbeit zu bestimmen versucht, notwendig. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt auf, wie mit Hilfe von Methoden der Bibliometrie und Computerlinguistik stark frequentierte Themen der Sozialen Arbeit auf Grundlage von Abstracts und Rezensionen ermittelt werden können. Darüber hinaus wird auf der Sozialdimension der Disziplin das wissenschaftliche Kooperationsverhalten in Form von Co-Autor•innenschaften untersucht.

Digitalisierung und technologischer Fortschritt verändern das menschliche Selbstverständnis. Während sich der Mensch in Abgrenzung zu Tier und Natur als kultiviertes und autonom handelndes Wesen definiert, steht er angesichts der zunehmenden Technologisierung nun vor der Frage: Was bedeutet Menschsein vor dem Hintergrund der neuen Technologien? Wie verändern sich die menschliche Lebenswelt, Verantwortungsstrukturen und Identitätskonzepte? Was können Menschen, was Technologien nicht können? Was macht den Menschen aus und wo wird er in Frage gestellt? Der Band bietet einen umfassenden Blick auf diese Fragestellungen. Im ersten Teil befassen sich Beiträge aus der Philosophie und Anthropologie mit dem Spannungsfeld Mensch-Maschine. Die anschließenden Beiträge eröffnen interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf die technisierte Lebenswelt des Menschen in den Bereichen Kultur, Kommunikation und Bildung. Im letzten Teil des Bandes wird schließlich als Kontrapunkt das Menschsein in einer technisiertenWelt aus der Perspektive von Spiritualität und Pflege in den Blick genommen.

Im Kontext der (digitalen) Transformation von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft wird die Technologieakzeptanz der Bevölkerung zunehmend durch einen wahrgenommenen Kontrollverlust durch neue Technologien beeinflusst. Kontrollverlust wird in dem vorliegenden Band als multikausaler, multimodaler und zyklischer Prozess des Übergangs von Kontrolle definiert und in einem mehrdimensionalen heuristischen Modell konzeptionell zusammengeführt. Die Ergebnisse einer ersten quantitativ-empirischen Analyse für Baden-Württemberg auf Basis dieses Modells bestätigen, dass Kontrollverlust ein zentraler Einflussfaktor auf die Technologieakzeptanz ist, aber von verschiedenen soziodemographischen Gruppen unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird.

Wie und warum kommunizieren Unternehmen über die Zukunft der Menschheit? In dieser Arbeit werden die Zukunftserzählungen von Facebook und SpaceX empirisch rekonstruiert. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung steht die öffentliche Kommunikation der prominenten Unternehmerfiguren Mark Zuckerberg und Elon Musk. Anhand dieser paradigmatischen Akteure wird gezeigt, auf welchen Wegen sich explizit unternehmerische Zukunftsvisionen in das Zukunftswissen der Gegenwart einschreiben. Ein kritischer Blick klärt über die Ursprünge dieser Visionen auf und offenbart, wie unternehmerische Prophetie den Möglichkeitsraum der Zukunft auf spezifische Weise verengt.

This open access handbook presents a multidisciplinary and multifaceted perspective on how the ‘digital'is simultaneously changing Russia and the research methods scholars use to study Russia. It provides a critical update on how Russian society, politics, economy, and culture are reconfigured in the context of ubiquitous connectivity and accounts for the political and societal responses to digitalization. In addition, it answers practical and methodological questions in handling Russian data and a wide array of digital methods. The volume makes a timely intervention in our understanding of the changing field of Russian Studies and is an essential guide for scholars, advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying Russia today.

​This book provides an introduction to the Forge, an online discussion site for tabletop role-playing game (TRPG) design, play, and publication that was active during the first years of the twenty-first century and which served as an important locus for experimentation in game design and production during that time. Aimed at game studies scholars, for whom the ideas formulated at or popularized by the Forge are of key interest, the book also attempts to provide an accessible account of the growth and development of the Forge as a site of participatory culture. It situates the Forge within the broader context of TRPG discourse, and connects “Forge theory” to the academic investigation of role-playing.

Die Digitalität der Gesellschaft ist durch einen Strukturwandel in allen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen gekennzeichnet. Wie sind digitale Medien Teil gegenwärtiger Kindheiten? Die Untersuchung von Medien und Medienpraktiken im Alltag der Kinder sind neue Herausforderungen für die Kindheits- und Familienforschung, denen mit einem innovativen methodischen und methodologischen Repertoire begegnet wird. Der Band leistet einen Beitrag dazu, die medialen Formen von Kindsein und Familiesein zu klären und etabliert digitale Kindheiten als ein eigenständiges Forschungsfeld.

Michael Waltinger beschreibt in dieser Medienethnografie die Mobiltelefonaneignung im urbanen Alltag einer Gemeinde in Eastlands Nairobi (Kenia). Besondere Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Verwobenheit des Alltagsmedienhandelns mit den soziostrukturellen Lebensbedingungen der Menschen, um das Medienhandeln auf Subjektebene in die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen auf Makroebene zu stellen. Während das Mobiltelefonhandeln vielfältige Lebensbereiche umfasst und den Geräten als ambivalente Artefakte unterschiedlichste Einflüsse positiver wie negativer Natur zugeschrieben werden, so gehören diese im kontemporären Nairobi zum way of life: Sie sind Symbol für die Teilhabe am globalen Dorf, komplex zu dechiffrierende Zeichen sozialer Distinktion sowie Signifikate einer lokal verorteten Afromoderne.

Christian Jekat untersucht in diesem Buch die Systemkrise der Notenbanken während und nach der globalen Finanzkrise 2007. Diese stellt sich als eine mediale Währungskrise heraus, hervorgerufen durch digitale Technologien und Währungen. Zentralbanken werden durch die Digitalisierung gezwungen, ihr politisches Monopol der Geldmengenbestimmung neu zu organisieren, und zwar in zeitlicher (Gleichzeitigkeit), sachlicher (Komplexität der Währungsentwicklung) und sozialer Hinsicht (Vertrauen). Es zeigt sich, wie die Notenbanken im Prozess ihrer Krisenbewältigung durch leichtes Geld die Dynamik der Finanzkrise erst erzeugen, das gesellschaftliche Vertrauen in gesetzliche Standardwährungen aufs Spiel setzen und so selbst zur Entstehung jener Digitalwährungen beitragen, die ihre eigene Systemkrise verschärfen.​

With well over one-hundred episodes, the podcast Welcome to Night Vale has spawned several international live tours, two novels set in the Night Vale universe, and an extensive volume of fan fiction and commentary. However, despite its immense popularity, Welcome to Night Vale has received almost no academic scrutiny. This edited collection of scholarly essays—the very first of its kind on a podcast—attempts to redress this lack of attention to Night Vale by bringing together an international group of scholars from different disciplines to consider the program's form, themes, politics, and fanbase. After a thorough introduction by the volume's editor, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock, the eight contributors not only offer close analysis of Night Vale, but use the program as the impetus for broader explorations of new media, gender, the constitution of identity, the construction of place, and the human relationship to meaning and the non-human.
