This book aims to begin an eco-centered, eco-feminist informed discussion about the ways in which our relationship to “nature” is bound up with gender, patriarchy, and violence.Ecofeminist scholars study the interconnections between gendered relationships of domination among humans, between humans, and between humans, nonhumans, and the earth. It is in this ideological and structural tangle between humans and the environment that a deeper understanding of gender violence is possible. Ecofeminism offers analytical possibilities for understanding a “logic of domination” which sustain a whole host of problems, including the interrelated oppressions of gender violence and exploitation of the more-than-human-life world. In this book, Gwen Hunnicutt brings into dialog ecofeminism and gender violence. Ideological components, such as speciesism and the belief that the earth and its nonhuman inhabitants are ours to exploit, inform a host of other social practices, including interpersonal violence.A portion of this book is devoted to exploring the ways in which patriarchy is foregrounded by another hierarchy—uman domination over “nature”. Thus, gender violence stems from a logic of domination that is built on the domination of nature and the domination of the Other “as nature”. As this blueprint of oppression repeats itself where there are vectors of difference, the chapters ultimately connect these oppressions by showing the inextricable bind of violence against humans and the more-than-human-life world. Patriarchy, particularly as embedded in the Old and New Testaments, and Roman legal precepts, has been a powerful organising concept with which social order has been understood, maintained, enforced, contested, adjudicated and dreamt about for over two millennia of western history. This brief book surveys three influential episodes in this history: seventeenth-century debates about absolutism and democracy, nineteenth-century reconstructions of human prehistory, and the broad mobilisations linked to twentieth-century women's movements. It then looks at the way feminist scholars have reconsidered and revised some earlier explanations built around patriarchy. The book concludes with an overview of current uses of the concept of patriarchy – from fundamentalist Christian activism, over foreign policy analyses of oppressive regimes, to scholarly debates about forms of effective governance. Dieser Text erscheint nun fast drei Jahre nach seiner ersten Niederschrift und Abgabe bei der Kommission. Zu den von mir angesprochenen Themen gab es in dieser Zeit eine Reihe von Neuveröffentlichungen, und Diskussionen in Wissenschaften und Frauenbewegung schritten fort. Bei unveränderten The­ sen habe ich das neue Material in den Teil I eingearbeitet: er wurde sehr viel umfangreicher und stellt jetzt den Hauptteil dar; den Teil II dagegen habe ich stark gekürzt; er bildet jetzt eine Art Anhang, als kurze Illustration zu den zwei Spezialthemen, wie Kultur und Politik die Identität von Frauen und Mädchen in ihren Körpern und im Raum prägen. Obwohl, beziehungsweise gerade weil dieser Text als Expertise entstand, ha­ be ich mich besonders um Vermittlung bemüht - darum, kulturwissenschaftli­ che Fragen und Ergebnisse interdisziplinär zu verknüpfen und möglichst auch Praktiker/innen nahezubringen. Das gestaltete sich für mich als teils schwieriger, aber hoffentlich im Ergebnis akzeptabler Balanceakt zwischen Tiefe und Breite; denn es hieß, einerseits wie in einer Luftaufnahme die großen Zusammenhänge überschaubar machen zu wollen; andererseits in'Zwischenlandungen'Detail­ fragen zu erörtern und manches genauer zu betrachten, um den umfassenden Thesen Leben einzuhauchen und natürlich auch, um sie zu belegen. Entspre­ chend strukturiert sich die Literaturauswahl: teils enthält sie Grundlagenwer­ ke; teils erschienen mir auch sehr spezielle Angaben nötig, sofern sie in den zitierten eigenen bzw. Arbeiten anderer Autor/innen nicht oder nicht leicht aufzufinden (oder einfach interessant) sind.
