Deutet die zunehmende Ausweitung und Verflechtung deutschsprachiger Erinnerungsnarrative auf eine Aufsplitterung des Kollektivs hin, oder signalisiert sie vielmehr die Entstehung einer neuen, transnationalen und transkulturellen Form von Gemeinschaft? Inwiefern vermag die kritische Perspektivierung der Vergangenheit, die in den untersuchten Werken zu verzeichnen ist, über Erinnerungskonkurrenzen und Opferwettbewerb hinauszuführen und einem „solidarischen'Erinnern Raum zu machen? Diesen Fragen geht der Band nach, indem er die Herausforderungen beleuchtet, die neuere Werke der Kunst und Literatur an die Erinnerungskultur stellen. Kreisten die Untersuchungen zum Holocaust-Gedächtnis in der deutschen Literatur lange Zeit ausschließlich um die Gegenüberstellung von Tätern und Opfern und um die Frage der Schuld, so sind heute neue Begrifflichkeiten und Denkmodelle notwendig. Über das titelgebende, von Marianne Hirsch entwickelte Konzept der postmemory hinaus werden Ansätze aus der neueren Gedächtnisforschung sowie aus den Bereichen Traumaforschung, Holocaust studies und postcolonial studies diskutiert. Als hilfreich erweisen sich insbesondere die von Michael Rothberg geprägten Begriffe multidirectional memory und implicated subject, die Überlegungen von Astrid Erll und Ann Rigney zum Themenkomplex mediation / remediation sowie die vielfältigen Arbeiten Aleida Assmanns.

In the 20th century and beyond, world wars, independence and decolonization conflicts, the Holocaust, exile, migration, terrorism and other forms of collective violence trigger traumas that are mediated by text and image, commemorative rites, music, the press, museums... The notion of trauma itseld evolves with these events. The analysis of these processes and their mediatization is preceded by an introduction that sets out the conceptual framework of the volume. The chapters present the current state of research and offer original perspectives on the relationship between trauma and cultural memory.

Il saggio rappresenta una riflessione multidisciplinare sul legame esistente fra Patrimonio Culturale, responsabilità sociale delle imprese e sviluppo territoriale. Viene proposto il modello benefit come realizzazione possibile di uno sviluppo territoriale sostenibile, in quanto le Benefit Corporation sono un modello americano orientato al bene comune, mentre le Società Benefit rappresentano la possibilità per il diritto italiano di poter fare impresa bilanciando contemporaneamente lucro e beneficio comune. Questi modelli d'impresa rispettano pienamente i parametri ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), che sempre di più stanno spingendo le imprese a perseguire gli standard di sostenibilità. Il lavoro si concentra sulla valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale e sull'apporto che il mondo imprenditoriale, proprio grazie all'adozione del modello benefit, può dare in termini di tutela e promozione del Patrimonio Culturale. Vengono approfonditi aspetti quali il legame tra valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale e sviluppo territoriale, la disanima di alcune norme internazionali, nazionali e della legge regionale della Puglia che istituisce un albo speciale per le Società Benefit, la modifica dell'art. 41 della Costituzione e delle norme europee sulla eco-sostenibilità, l'evoluzione del concetto di “beneficio comune” e di responsabilità sociale d'impresa. Il lavoro continua focalizzandosi sugli aspetti cognitivi sottostanti ai processi decisionali e organizzativi con riferimento al consumo dei beni culturali, sulla misurazione statistica dell'impatto delle Società Benefit sul territorio e sul Patrimonio Culturale e il legame esistente tra nuove tecnologie, la transizione digitale, il cloud e la valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali. Viene poi analizzata la politica di sviluppo della Regione Puglia, che ha previsto premialità nei bandi di finanza agevolata per le aziende Benefit. Infine viene affrontato il tema della comunicazione aziendale e del valore sociale sostenibile intrinseco nel Patrimonio Sociale e Culturale.

Come resistere alla semplificazione della realtà a cui conducono la visione utilitaristica e neoliberale dell'individuo, ma anche la critica sistematica del dominio? Rendendo giustizia al lato luminoso del sociale, ciò che non richiede affatto di negare i suoi lati oscuri. Chanial esamina il legame amoroso, ma anche il desiderio come violenza. Dialogando con le teoriche del care, indaga la cura come un “potere dei deboli” che non è privo di lati oscuri. A fronte della crisi ecologica, egli propone un'“etica della Terra” e sottolinea l'urgenza di stabilire con la natura nuove forme di reciprocità. Infine, più che mai attuale è oggi la lezione di Marcel Mauss, che ci ricorda che solo riconoscendo le nostre generose relazioni di reciprocità è possibile (ri)tessere i fili di un mondo comune.

Plusieurs poussent des cris affolés à propos d'une Université soi-disant assiégée par les féministes et les antiracistes, qui menaceraient jusqu'à l'ensemble de la société au nom de la « rectitude politique ». Pour stimuler la panique collective, on agite des épouvantails –social justice warriors, islamo-gauchistes, wokes, gender studies – et on évoque les pires violences de l'histoire : chasse aux sorcières, lynchage, totalitarisme, extermination. Mêmes des chefs d'État montent au front. Or, cette agitation repose non seulement sur des exagérations et des mensonges, mais elle relève d'une manipulation qui enferme l'esprit et entrave la curiosité intellectuelle, la liberté universitaire et le développement des savoirs. Pour y voir plus clair, cet essai s'intéresse à l'histoire ancienne et récente de l'Université. Il appelle à considérer la place réelle des études sur le genre et le racisme dans les réseaux universitaires – des salles de classe aux projets de recherche –, et met en lumière les forces qui mènent la charge aux États-Unis, en France et au Québec, depuis presque cinquante ans. Ultimement, il s'agit d'un exercice de déconstruction d'une propagande réactionnaire.

Die Arbeit behandelt die historische Entwicklung der Kindererziehung in der Katholischen Kirche bis zur Gegenwart. Die themenspezifische ekklesiologische Grundlegung des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils und das weitere kirchliche Lehramt bilden den Hintergrund für die Untersuchung der aktuellen Rechtsgrundlagen. Besonders fokussiert werden die Parameter der Personenwürde und der Religionsfreiheit. Permanenter Ausgangspunkt ist das Kind als Rechtssubjekt. Die explizite, normative Anerkennung der Rechtssubjektivität des Kindes wird eingefordert. Aus der Anspruchslage des Kindes resultiert das Postulat des rechtlichen Schutzes der Familie als Institution. Das Rechtsgut der christlichen Erziehung impliziert spezifische Pflichten der Eltern als primären Trägern und bildet einen wesentlichen Gegenstand der pastoralen Sorge der Kirche. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich die Evidenz des Erfordernisses der Implementierung eines gegenüber der gegenwärtigen Rechtslage weiterreichenden, umfassenden Rechtsschutzes zugunsten des Kindes im kanonischen Recht.

This book sheds light on the outcomes of social movements in Brazil. Il volume si incentra sull'analisi di alcuni aspetti chiave del rapporto tra populismo e democrazia e, nello specifico, sul tipo di tensione che il governo bi-populista Movimento 5 Stelle-Lega ha prodotto sulle istituzioni, sulle prassi e sui principi democratici. La principale innovazione teorica – sottoposta a conferma empirica – che questo studio vuole introdurre nell'analisi accademica riguarda la distinzione tra due tipologie di populismo: quello conformato, in cui rientra il M5S, e quello da contagio, in cui si collocano i soggetti di destra e di sinistra che utilizzano il populismo quale elemento addizionale, come nel caso della Lega. L'idea di fondo è che differenti tipologie di populismo – in presenza/assenza di un'ideologia “piena” con la quale questo si miscela – producono diversi tipi di effetti sulla democrazia costituzionale.

»Selbstorganisation« bezeichnet ein neues Paradigma in den Wissenschaften. Es umfaßt so unterschiedliche Konzepte wie Synergetik, Autopoiese und Chaostheorie. Entstehung und Dynamik von Komplexität bilden den gemeinsamen Problemhorizont. Als offene, innovative Wirklichkeitsbereiche werden Natur, Mensch und Geschichte gleichsam zu Themen der Selbstorganisationsforschung. Insofern leistet dieses neue Paradigma mit seiner Kritik am mechanistischen Weltverständnis und dessen natur-, sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichem Reduktionismus einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Etablierung der kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive. Mit der Thematisierung der Geschichtlichkeit und Kontingenz von Denk- und Wissensformen, kommt jene Selbstreflexifität zum Ausdruck, die es zum eigentlichen Paradigma der Moderne werden läßt.

A partir da década de 1990, vem ganhando vulto a questão dos conflitos internos que ocorrem em diversos países e de suas consequências nefastas quanto às condições de sobrevivência de suas populações, o que nos conduz a uma reflexão sobre até que ponto o Estado, em nome de sua soberania, tem o direito de infligir sofrimento e, em muitos casos, chegando ao extremo de matar sua própria população. Em 2001, a Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) lança a doutrina da'Responsabilidade de Proteger', segundo a qual compete ao Estado dar proteção e assistência a sua população e se, de algum modo, aquele não cumprir com esta obrigação ou não tiver condições de fazê-lo, a comunidade internacional suprirá essa deficiência do Estado, intervindo neste para o fim de reorganizá-lo, devolvendo a paz e a estabilidade a sua população. Portanto, é na acepção de dignidade como essência da pessoa humana, como seu valor intrínseco, que se deve compreender a ideia de que toda agressão ao valor fundamental da dignidade humana configura um ilícito internacional e, como tal, deve ensejar a intervenção institucional por parte da ONU, a qual, a despeito de seus muitos defeitos e imperfeições, ainda continua a ser o órgão representativo da comunidade internacional.

In this book we consider ways in which mining companies do and can/should respect the human rights of communities affected by mining operations. We examine what'can and should'means and to whom, in a variety of mostly Peruvian contexts, and how engineers engage in'normative'practices that may interfere with the communities'best interests. We hope to raise awareness of the complexity of issues at stake and begin the necessary process of critique—of self and of the industry in which an engineer chooses to work. This book aims to alert engineering students to the price paid not only by vulnerable communities but also by the natural environment when mining companies engage in irresponsible and, often, illegal mining practices. If mining is to be in our future, and if we are to have a future which is sustainable, engineering students must learn to mine and support mining, in new ways—ways which are fairer, more equitable, and cleaner than today.

Das Thema einer nachhaltigen Energieversorgung hat nicht nur im Kontext der Eindämmung des weiter fortschreitenden Klimawandels eine hohe Relevanz, sondern erhält auch in seiner Dimension der Verringerung internationaler Energieabhängigkeit eine weitere gesellschaftliche Bedeutung. Wissenschaftliche Diskussionen konzentrieren sich bisher vorrangig auf technische Innovationen bei der Umsetzung der Energiewende und vernachlässigen die Potentiale sozialer Lösungsansätze. Soziale Innovationen sind Veränderungen sozialer Praktiken und können z. B. in Form von Bottom-up-Initiativen, veränderten Lebensstilen oder Bürgerenergiegenossenschaften in Erscheinung treten. An dieser Stelle setzt die Autorin an und legt anhand von fünf Fallstudien im Kreis Steinfurt (NRW) mögliche Einflussfaktoren auf soziale Innovationen sowie deren Funktionen innerhalb der kommunalen Energiewende dar. Die Arbeit bietet nicht nur einen Beitrag zur wissenschaftlichen Theoriediskussion sozialer Innovationen und Transformationsprozesse, sondern ermöglicht es auch, das Konzept sozialer Innovationen in seiner Anwendungsbezogenheit für weitere kommunale Entwicklungsprozesse nutzbar zu machen. El libro incluye 23 autores de diversos países iberoamericanos, además de una introducción y la reflexión final. Se divide en tres grandes apartados: el primero: El radar geográfico: aproximaciones de amplio espectro examina la Geografía Social, Económica y Ambiental; el segundo: Temas transversales estudia los ejes que cruzan las ciencias sociales especialmente integradas: terminología, análisis espacial, tecnologías vinculadas a la información geográfica y el tercero de ellos: Investigación aplicada, donde se presentan ejemplos de investigación de punta en la región iberoamericana. Los autores destacan que desde algunos años, los trabajos en ciencias sociales que le otorgan un papel estratégico a la dimensión espacial están registrando un enorme interés en el mundo y que Iberoamérica no escapa a esta tendencia. Das vorliegende Buch basiert auf systemisch-hermeneutischen Forschungen des Autors zum'Erweiterten Kunstbegriff'von Joseph Beuys. Diese bilden die ersten beiden Teile des Buches:'Beuys nachdenken'und'Beuys wahrnehmen'. In seinem dritten Teil,'Beuys weiterdenken', wird die in beiden vorausgehenden Diskursen freigelegte innere Substanz der Kunst, Mensch und Leben erweiternden Arbeit dieses Künstlers zu vergleichbaren philosophischen und pädagogischen Diskursen in Beziehung gesetzt. Die daraus hervorgehende Sympoietische Bildungspraxis läßt sich auch als Grundlegung der Beuys´schen Idee vom Museum als Ort'permanenter Konferenz'betrachten - als Ort des Austauschs von Ideen, Standpunkten und Vorschlägen zur Lösung allgemeiner Probleme von existenzieller Bedeutung und Tragweite - etwa des Problems, die Evolution fortzusetzen - was nicht weniger bedeutet, als das Ganze des an sich selbst scheiternden Anthropozäns zu transformieren. Auf dieses Ganze hin ausgerichtet, erweiterte Beuys die Kunst zu einer Lebenspraxis wechselseitigen Einander-hervorbringens von Künstler und Werk, Mensch und Welt, Menschheit und Biosphäre. Le partage des espaces publics des grandes villes industrialisées avec les personnes en situation d'itinérance et de marginalité représente plusieurs défis autant pour les acteurs de la vie quotidienne que pour les intervenants sociaux et les responsables politiques. Ces défis sont en phase avec les enjeux contemporains associés non seulement aux transformations des normes de socialisation à la vie collective, mais aussi à celles du développement urbain des centres-villes. Compte tenu des tensions sociales et politiques générées par les effets des contextes de revitalisation urbaine, l'analyse des enjeux traversant les pratiques de partage de l'espace public avec les personnes en situation d'itinérance constitue un travail essentiel à l'identification de pistes d'intervention et d'actions pouvant améliorer la cohabitation. Cet ouvrage présente les résultats d'une étude de deux cas – celui de Montréal (Quartier des spectacles) et celui de Québec (Nouvo Saint-Roch) – sous l'angle d'analyse des logiques normatives guidant les pratiques de partage de l'espace public entre les acteurs concernés. Cette analyse repose sur trois modes d'investigation : 1) deux enquêtes qualitatives à Montréal et à Québec ; 2) une analyse des discours médiatiques visant à relever les imaginaires sociaux alimentant les représentations sociospatiales des acteurs sur les pratiques des personnes marginalisées dans les espaces publics ; 3) une analyse comparative des politiques publiques municipales de six villes canadiennes, dont Montréal et Québec. L'analisi dell'«egemonia» e delle «contro-egemonie» all'interno degli studi culturali ha permesso di considerare i termini in cui la cultura mediale partecipi alla riproduzione dell'ideologia dominante che sembra esistere come consenso indiscusso e interpretazione latente della realtà. Questi aspetti diventano di particolare pregnanza soprattutto quando le forme di opposizione ai modelli egemonici e, dunque, allo status quo sono interpretate come esempio di dissidenza o di devianza. Il gruppo di studiose e di studiosi che si riunirono attorno al Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies dell'Università di Birmingham – alla base dell'affermazione dei Cultural Studies e di cui figura di primo piano fu certamente Stuart Hall – ha riformulato l'approccio delle scienze sociali con il reale. In particolare, il CCCS ha integrato al proprio interno la lezione strutturalista sulla centralità delle macrostrutture nella formulazione discorsiva e nella produzione dei soggetti, le intuizione gramsciane sulla forza discorsiva dell'egemonia e una innovativa lettura dell'opera di Marx. Così facendo, esso è stata in grado di proporre una innovativa e ancora oggi fondamentale lettura dei processi sociali che hanno caratterizzato la «svolta neoliberale» attraverso una analisi della produzione e della trasmissione dei codici culturali dominanti, delle stratificazioni e delle divisioni prodotte dai processi economici tramite il prisma della razza e del genere, oltre che della classe, e della ridefinizione dei rapporti di forza nello spazio pubblico attraverso nuovi dispositivi di controllo.
Dall'altro lato, la riabilitazione epistemologica e politica del concetto gramsciano di «subalternità» ha permesso di ridefinire le condizioni operative dei conflitti sociali incarnandoli materialmente in quelle nuove soggettività che dai margini prendevano parola sullo spazio pubblico attraverso delle pratiche contro-egemoniche di soggettivazione. Il volume ripropone una lettura dell'analisi che Stuart Hall e colleghi hanno fornito del rapporto tra devianza, crimine e media; in particolare, riprendendo gran parte dei concetti analitici tratti dalla letteratura sulla «costruzione dei problemi sociali» e del «panico morale», l'analisi si sofferma sui temi della sicurezza contro il crimine e la devianza, sulla definizione di «nemici culturali opportuni», su cui far converge gran parte dell'ansia e della preoccupazione sociale, minacce immaginarie strumentalmente orchestrate che avvolgono la gente all'interno delle loro «spirali di significazione». A corredo del volume alcuni scritti classici, mai tradotti prima in lingua italiana, che definiscono l'attenzione di questo gruppo di studiosi nei confronti di ogni figura che rappresenti l'«alterità» e l'alterazione dell'ordine morale e simbolico egemone.

In this book we consider ways in which mining companies do and can/should respect the human rights of communities affected by mining operations. We examine what'can and should'means and to whom, in a variety of mostly Peruvian contexts, and how engineers engage in'normative'practices that may interfere with the communities'best interests. We hope to raise awareness of the complexity of issues at stake and begin the necessary process of critique—of self and of the industry in which an engineer chooses to work. This book aims to alert engineering students to the price paid not only by vulnerable communities but also by the natural environment when mining companies engage in irresponsible and, often, illegal mining practices. If mining is to be in our future, and if we are to have a future which is sustainable, engineering students must learn to mine and support mining, in new ways—ways which are fairer, more equitable, and cleaner than today.

Die Briefe Max Webers aus den Jahren 1918 bis 1920 beleuchten in großer Eindringlichkeit die Ereignisse und die Selbstwahrnehmung Max Webers in seinen letzten Lebensjahren. Die Niederlage im Krieg, der Zusammenbruch des Kaiserreichs und die Neuordnung Deutschlands steigerten seine politischen Aktivitäten. In seinen Reden, Publikationen und als Sachverständiger der deutschen Delegation in Versailles wandte er sich gegen einen von den Siegern diktierten Frieden und plädierte für eine'Politik des Rechts'. Innenpolitisch bekämpfte er den'revolutionären Karneval'und engagierte sich für eine parlamentarische Demokratie, beteiligte sich am Verfassungsentwurf und unterstützte im Winter 1918/19 mit zahlreichen Wahlreden die linksdemokratische Deutsche Demokratische Partei. Zugleich bemühte er sich um die Wiedererlangung einer Professur, 1918 zunächst als Gastdozent in Wien, dann ab Frühjahr 1919 als Lehrstuhlinhaber für Gesellschaftswissenschaft, Wirtschaftsgeschichte und Nationalökonomie in München. Das bedeutete den Abschied von Heidelberg und einen beruflichen Neuanfang. Mit immenser Konzentration und Arbeitskraft wandte er sich neben den Vorlesungen der Drucklegung seiner beiden Hauptwerke, den'Gesammelten Aufsätzen zur Religionssoziologie'und seinem Beitrag'Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft'zum'Grundriß der Sozialökonomik', zu. Webers Münchener Zeit stand in persönlicher Hinsicht unter dem Stern Else Jaffés. Prägend wurden der Tod der Mutter, der Selbstmord seiner Schwester und die Sorge um das Schicksal von deren verwaisten Kindern. Jäh endete alles mit dem Tod Max Webers am 14. Juni 1920. Die historisch-kritische Edition veröffentlicht und kommentiert über 450 weitgehend unbekannte Briefe.

Le nostre società attuali si caratterizzano per un pluralismo culturale e assiologico che insidia le fondamenta del nostro vivere insieme. Date queste premesse, è essenziale trovare un metodo capace di far coesistere le differenti concezioni che hanno gli individui e che potrebbero essere motivo di disaccordo persistente. La tesi centrale di questo libro è che il riconoscere “gli altri” come possibili interlocutori delle nostre decisioni possa rappresentare una soluzione a questo difficile problema. Tuttavia, per riuscire nell'intento, è necessario che “gli altri” giochino un ruolo “formativo” e non semplicemente aggregativo o oppositivo. In altri termini, è indispensabile che vi sia tra i soggetti una qualche forma di discussione razionale sulle scelte da fare per soddisfare gli interessi collettivi.

Auf Einladung des Freistudentischen Bundes, Landesverband Bayern, sprach Max Weber am 7. November 1917 zunächst über Wissenschaft als Beruf, am 28. Januar 1919 über Politik als Beruf in München. Beide Vorträge waren Teil einer Reihe'Geistige Arbeit als Beruf'und sollten aus der Sicht der Veranstalter Sachverständigengutachten sein. Weber nutzte beide Gelegenheiten, um nicht nur über die äußere Seite dieser Berufe, sondern auch über ihre innere Seite, ihren Sinn, zu sprechen. Beider Vorträge wurden in überarbeiteter Form zuerst 1919 als Broschüren publiziert. Sie sind zu klassischen Texten der Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften geworden. Seit ihrem Erscheinen haben sie die Diskussion um den Sinn der Wissenschaft in der Industriegesellschaft und der Politik in der Massendemokratie mitbestimmt. Die Vorträge gehören nach Anlaß, Adressatenkreis und Zielsetzung zusammen. Deshalb wurden sie hier in einem Band ediert. Dies ist ein Novum. Neu ist auch, daß Vorformen der Vorträge mitgeteilt werden - im Falle von Wissenschaft als Beruf ein Zeitungsbericht, im Falle von Politik als Beruf Webers Stichwortmanuskript - und daß der Vergleich zwischen Vorform und Druckfassung durch die Textpräsentation erleichtert wird. Dies erlaubt es dem Leser, die Textgenese zu verfolgen. In der Einleitung werden die werk-, zeit- und theoriegeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge skizziert, in denen die Vorträge stehen. Editorische Berichte und Sachkommentare schließen die Texte für den Leser weiter auf. Deren andauernde Aktualität kommt nicht zuletzt auch daher, daß Weber hier eine'philosophische'Position formuliert, die um die Begriffe Berufspflicht, Selbstbegrenzung und Persönlichkeit zentriert ist. Es geht ihm in beiden Vorträgen letztlich um das Schicksal des Menschen in der modernen Welt.

This book addresses the representation of masculinities in the work of J. M. Coetzee, with a particular focus on the writer's trilogy: Boyhood (1997), Youth (2002) and Summertime (2009). Provocatively dealing with questions of autobiography, Coetzee's trilogy provides a panoramic view of a man's development through various stages of life and, equally, different geographical locations, such as apartheid South Africa, sixties London and South Africa in the throes of democratic revolution. Attentive to the masculine formations that the trilogy represents, this work draws on conceptual frameworks and methodologies provided by the joint critique of gender and postcolonial studies, and is particularly animated by the discussions raised by men's studies, a field that is nowadays patently interested in postcolonial / transnational masculinities. In this vein, the work discusses not only aspects related to violence and gendered formations as they occur and manifest themselves in the intersections of the local and global, but also the possibilities of refashioning identities increasingly attentive to an ethics of Otherness, one of the staples of Coetzee's writing.

This book presents key conceptualizations of violence as developed by Norbert Elias. The authors explain and exemplify these concepts by analyzing Elias's late texts, comparing his views to those of Sigmund Freud, and by analyzing the work of filmmaker Michael Haneke. The authors then discuss the strengths and shortcomings of Elias's thoughts on violence by examining various social processes such as colonization, imperialism, and the Brazilian civilizing process—in addition to the ambivalence of state violence. The final chapters suggest how these concepts can be used to explain difficulties in implementing democracy, grappling with memories of violence, and state building after democracy.

Microfinance began as the disbursement of tiny loans to the poor, which they could use to undertake informal income-generating activities. It went on to become one of the most popular international development policies of all time and a mainstay of local development and antipoverty programs across the Global South. The contributors to this multidisciplinary volume consider the origins, evolution, and outcomes of microfinance from a variety of perspectives and contend that it has been an unsuccessful approach to development. The contributors contend that over the last twenty years, microfinance policies have exacerbated poverty and exclusion, undermined gender empowerment, underpinned a massive growth in inequality, destroyed solidarity and trust in the community, and, overall, manifestly weakened those local economies of the Global South where it reached critical mass. They use qualitative anthropological, economic, and political-economic research to unpack the ideas and values that have allowed microfinance to “seduce” the world and blind so many to its corrosive effects.
