- Abstract
This eBook on “Police Integrity'covers a subject of upmost importance, especially in the United States, where the institution of policing is facing a major crisis of legitimacy. The integrity in policing is fundamentally important for maintaining legitimacy with the public given that the police are empowered in democratic societies to protect individual liberties and uphold the law in a fair and impartial manner. The problem of police ethics and integrity is not unique to the United States, as the articles in this special issue will attest. The current research is especially important for establishing the patterns of integrity that exist across many different countries, agency types, incidents, work groups and employee characteristics. This work helps to define the scope and seriousness of the problem, as well as factors that can help to constrain the problem and encourage greater integrity in police organizations.
