Gabriel Tarde ranks as one of the most outstanding sociologists of nineteenth-century France, though not as well known by English readers as his peers Comte and Durkheim. This book makes available Tarde's most important work and demonstrates his continuing relevance to a new generation of students and thinkers. Tarde's landmark research and empirical analysis drew upon collective behavior, mass communications, and civic opinion as elements to be explained within the context of broader social patterns. Unlike the mass society theorists that followed in his wake, Tarde integrated his discussions of societal change at the macrosocietal and individual levels, anticipating later twentieth-century thinkers who fused the studies of mass communications and public opinion research. Terry N. Clark's introduction, considered the premier guide to Tarde's opus, accompanies this important work, reprinted here for the first time in forty years.

Microsociologists seek to capture social life as it is experienced, and in recent decades no one has championed the microsociological approach more fiercely than Randall Collins. The pieces in this exciting volume offer fresh and original insights into key aspects of Collins'thought, and of microsociology more generally. The introductory essay by Elliot B. Weininger and Omar Lizardo provides a lucid overview of the key premises this perspective. Ethnographic papers by Randol Contreras, using data from New York, and Philippe Bourgois and Laurie Kain Hart, using data from Philadelphia, examine the social logic of violence in street-level narcotics markets. A chapter by Simone Polillo picks up from Collins'work in the sociology of knowledge, examining multiple ways in which social network structures can engender intellectual creativity. The third section of the book contains papers that critically but sympathetically assess key tenets of microsociology. Jonathan H. Turner argues that the radically microsociological perspective developed by Collins will better serve the social scientific project if it is embedded in a more comprehensive paradigm, one that acknowledges the macro- and meso-levels of social and cultural life. A chapter by David Gibson presents empirical analyses of decisions by state leaders concerning whether or not to use force to deal with internal or external foes, suggesting that Collins'model of interaction ritual can only partially illuminate the dynamics of these highly consequential political moments. Work by Erika Summers-Effler and Justin Van Ness seeks to systematize and broaden the scope of Collins'theory of interaction, by including in it encounters that depart from the ritual model in important ways. In a final, reflective chapter, Randall Collins himself highlights the promise and future of microsociology. The emergence of network facilities and the increased availability of personal computer systems over the last decade has seen the development of interest in the use of computers to support cooperative work. This volume presents the proceedings of the fifth European conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Discussions about reducing the harms associated with drug use and antidrug policies are often politicized, infused with questionable data, and unproductive. This paper provides a nonpartisan primer on drug use and drug policy in the United States. It aims to bring those new to drug policy up to speed and provide ideas to researchers and potential research funders about how they could make strong contributions to the field.

The Conference on'Ethical values in international decision­ making'was held by the Grotius Seminarium in the period June 16-20, 1958 at the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague. At that time, a number of papers were distributed to the par­ ticipants while -after the Conference -two brief reports appeared in'De Internationale Spectator'(1958, I, p. 426-435) and in'Research and Education in the Netherlands'(September 1958, Vol. II, no. 3, p. 18-21). As considerable time has elapsed since, this Booklet does not give a'report'on the Conference, but rather it attempts to recapture its spirit and to elaborate some of the problems which were discussed. The introductory'Remarks'do this in an indi­ vidualistic manner for which the author alone is responsible, but it is hoped that this way of presenting the topic of the Conference anew will rekindle the interest of the original participants while it may attract others and give them an impression of what the Grotius Seminarium is trying to do. This volume of papers from the distinguished sociologist Anselm Strauss reflects his self-professed lifelong intention to create sociological awareness in his readers and students. I am most grateful to Andr´ e Heck for his invitation to write a foreword to OSA Volume 4 – I will use this valued opportunity to emphasise those topics in Vol. 4 which I consider important even if other topics may be of even greater importance in the universal scale of things. At the outset let me say that I commend Vol. 4 to its readers – it contains much of very great interest for organisations and strategies in astronomy. A topic which I consider to be of very great importance at this time is Adverse Environmental Impact on Astronomy. There are two papers on this topic in OSA 4 – Cohen on Strategies for Protecting Radio Ast- nomy and Schwarz on Light Pollution Control. The growth in the extent of use, the power and spectral demand for radio transmission continues to increase virtually exponentially. The impact on the ‘listening'services such as radio astronomy has been severe. Only by creativity in developing new techniques for radio noise (including legal transmissions) reduction and by participating fully in the allocation process for radio frequencies has radio astronomy developed to the powerful investigative tool it is today.

Volume 15 of'Sociological Studies of Children and Youth'investigates the interactional procedures used by children and young people as disputes arise in varying contexts of their everyday life. Disputes are a topic of angst and anxiety for children, young people and adults alike, and yet are important times for interactional matters to be addressed. A particular intention of the book is its ethnomethodological focus, bringing a fine-grained analysis and understanding to disputes and related interactional matters. Such analysis highlights the in situ competency of children and young people as they manage their social relationships and disputes to offer insight into how children arrange their social lives within the context of school, home, neighbourhood, correctional, club and after school settings. This volume offers a contemporary understanding of the relational matters of children's peer cultures to better understand and address the complex nature of children and young people's everyday lives in today's society. Papers include: when verbal disputes get physical; conditional threats in young children's peer interaction; and young children's disputes during computer game playing.

The purpose of this paper is to link together in a new and creative way the exisitng knowledge about women's market work, reproductive roles, and household production in order to highlight opportunities for helping women improve nutrition. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that women are now engaged in a'zero sum game.'This means that in order to take advantage of new technology, market opportunities or even social services to improve nutrition, requires an initial investment of women's time, energy, or income, which may not be available, ironically, without sacrificing their own nutrition or that of their families. Consequently, women's time constraints may partially explain poor participation rates in many development projects. By reviewing the literature (including project documents) in nutrition, agriculture, child development, women in development, health, and economics, the authors point out the linkages and competition among women's life roles. Their conclusions highlight the need to give women access to the necessary productive, intellectual and nutritional resources to solve their own problems. The authors offer a number of suggestions for development planners about using an analysis of women's roles to address nutrition problems in developing countries.

This book seeks to identify the main threads of a resolutely complex course of thought which has contributed greatly to sociology. Although he founded no “school,” Raymond Boudon certainly made original contributions to the discipline in his own time, including his theory of rationality, his interpretation of the work of the founders of sociology, and his explanation of educational inequalities. He also presented convincing arguments about how the overly narrow utilitarianism of mainstream economists was incomplete and betrayed major theoretical gaps. It is true in any case that his thought laid the groundwork for many theoretical and empirical social studies. Through an analysis of the most important parts of this thought, each of the chapters will not merely demonstrate the scientific rigor which can be associated to his work, but also show how it remains relevant to our understanding of contemporary society and how it can hence be used for future research projects. There can be no doubt, Boudon's thought has for various reasons undergone new assessments. Chapters of this book hence reflect a variety of points of view on how his work can be understood, criticized, and used for future research endeavors.

There is a critical yet under-explored role for the social sciences within the UK's research, development and innovation system. This report argues that the social sciences can elevate this country's research output to a world-leading level. There is, however, a danger of the social sciences being seen as an add-on or afterthought to STEM research whereby social scientists'contributions are limited to identifying or ameliorating potentially negative ethical, legal or societal implications of scientific or technological advances. Our argument in this report is that social scientists have an essential role to play across the entire recipe - catalysing the development of new flavours - rather than simply being a garnish to a dish created by STEM. Ideas from social science need to be incorporated into STEM research right from the beginning, thereby enriching our perspectives and understanding of global challenges. Case studies include how social science can help us to develop effective climate change policies, combat AIDS rates amongst young people in South Africa, and assess the impact of AI technology on human rights. Im vorliegenden Buch wird der Einsatz von Planspielen im sozialwissenschaftlichen Unterricht untersucht. Mit Hilfe eines Websurveys wurden Lehrkräfte, die an hessischen Sekundarschulen den Politikunterricht durchführen, befragt. Als innovatives Lehr-Lern-Arrangement werden Planspielen multidimensionale Lerneffekte zugeschrieben, die mit Blick auf die elementare Bedeutung von Mündigkeit gerade für den Politikunterricht fruchtbar gemacht werden können. Die Methode kann helfen, sich (gesellschafts-)politische Themen, Strukturen und Prozesse sowie zentrale Kompetenzen anzueignen. Entsprechend relevant ist es, Grundlegendes über die Verwendung von Planspielen im Politikunterricht zu erfahren – so wird der Methode einerseits eine große Passung zugeschrieben, während ihr Einsatz, bislang empirisch nicht fundiert, andererseits als gering betrachtet wird. Folglich wird in der vorliegenden Studie die Frage bearbeitet: Inwiefern kommen Planspiele im sozialwissenschaftlichen Unterricht zum Einsatz? Es werden Merkmale des Planspieleinsatzes sowie etwaige (Hinderungs-)Gründe beleuchtet.

Sociology has developed theories of social change in the fields of evolution, conflict and modernization, viewing modern society as essentially unstable and conflict driven. However, it has not seriously studied catastrophe. A Theory of Catastrophe develops a sociology of catastrophes, comparing natural, social and political causes and consequences, and the social theories that might offer explanations. A catastrophe is a general and systematic breakdown of social and political institutions resulting, among other things, in what we could call a catastrophe consciousness. The Greek ‘cata-strophe'formed the conclusion to a dramatic sequence of strophes. The cata-strophe was the final act of a drama, namely its denouement. Catastrophic denouements are without hope: genocides, military occupations, plagues, famines and earthquakes. Ausgehend von der Grundannahme, dass die digitale Transformation nicht organisationsneutral erfolgt, werden die organisationalen Effekte der Universität auf den digitalen Veränderungsprozess im Spannungsverhältnis von akademischer Selbst- und universitärer Zentralverwaltung betrachtet. Hierfür wird mit einem systemtheoretischen Organisationsverständnis sowie einer äquivalenzfunktionalistischen Theorietechnik operiert und eine Beschreibung der organisationalen Funktionslogiken, ausgehend vom Bezugsproblem unklarer rationaler Technologien in Forschung und Lehre, entwickelt.Der Einbezug organisationaler Funktionslogiken erzeugt ein weiterführendes Verständnis der digitalen Transformation an Universitäten. Diese erfolgt im Sinne einer graduellen Transformation und ist durch eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher, lose gekoppelter Prozesse und Entwicklungen gekennzeichnet. Gegenstand des Buches ist der theoretische, empirische und gegenwartsdiagnostische Entwurf einer Soziologie des Privaten. Das Private ist ein komplexes Struktur- und Kulturelement moderner Gesellschaften. The Universal Kinship is a 1906 book by American zoologist, philosopher, educator and socialist J. Howard Moore. In the book, Moore advocated for a secular sentiocentric philosophy, called the'Universal Kinship', which mandated the ethical consideration and treatment of all sentient beings based on Darwinian principles of shared evolutionary kinship, and a universal application of the Golden Rule; a direct challenge to anthropocentric hierarchies and ethics. This book examines the changing role of statistics in institutional reform in Turkey, and the unanticipated ways in which such changes transform livelihoods as well. Turkish agriculture is undergoing its most profound transformation since the establishment of the Republic in the 1920s. Seemingly minor technical adjustments in farmers'reporting requirements and practices to collect better data on agriculture for statistics are also having a rapid and massive effect on farmers'practices and livelihoods. The attempt to understand agriculture in Turkey in new ways is changing agriculture itself. The relationship between statistics and social and natural phenomena is thus performative, and such performativity undergirds a great deal of socio-technical change in the world. Drawing on fieldwork in Turkey with statisticians, farmers and agricultural extension technicians, the book shows how alongside deliberation about reforms, it is in and through this performativity that much of the work of institutional commensuration actually happens.
