This latest volume in the'Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change'series contains three sections of data-driven articles that address topics central to scholarship on social movements and conflict resolution. Section One contains two papers on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, one focused on the Arab Israeli Land Day campaign and its implications for political process theory, while the other analyzes the emotional landscape of the long-running Women in Black vigils. Section Two contains four papers linked by their treatment of tactical and strategic issues associated with gender-based and gay and lesbian social movements, organizations, and their campaigns and activities. The two articles in Section Three treat themes associated with the complex intersection of identity formation and mobilization. As has long been the RSMCC series tradition, Volume 31 showcases top-level, original, and multi-method research on a variety of movements, organizations and conflicts in ways that contribute to theory-building.

Innovation is nowadays a question of life and death for many of the economies of the western world. Yet, due to our generally reductionist scientific paradigm, invention and innovation are rarely studied scientifically. Most work prefers to study its context and its consequences. As a result, we are as a society, lacking the scientific tools to understand, improve or otherwise impact on the processes of invention and innovation. This book delves deeply into that topic, taking the position that the complex systems approach, with its emphasis on ‘emergence', is better suited than our traditional approach to the phenomenon. In a collection of very coherent papers, which are the result of an EU-funded four year international research team's effort, it addresses various aspect of the topic from different disciplinary angles. One of the main emphases is the need, in the social sciences, to move away from neo-darwinist ‘population thinking'to ‘organization thinking'if we want to understand social evolution. Another main emphasis is on developing a generative approach to invention and innovation, looking in detail at the contexts within which invention and innovation occur, and how these contexts impact on the chances for success or failure. Throughout, the book is infused with interesting new insights, but also presents several well-elaborated case studies that connect the ideas with a substantive body of ‘real world'information.

This book examines a variety of subjective spatial experiences and knowledge production practices in order to shed new light on the specifics of contemporary socio-spatial change, driven as it is by inter alia, digitalization, transnationalization, and migration. Considering the ways in which emerging spatial phenomena are conditioned by an increasing interconnectedness, this book asks how spaces are changing as a result of mediatization, increased mobility, globalization, and social dislocation. The twenty-first century is already riddled with protests demanding social justice, and in every instance, young people are leading the charge. But in addition to protesters who take to the streets with handmade placards are young adults who engage in less obvious change-making tactics. This study critically discusses the thesis on the sociological vacuum formulated by Stefan Nowak. The author's aim is to refute the claim that the sociological vacuum is relevant for major social processes occurring in Poland. He presents the sociological vacuum in the context of the debate on micro and macro levels and discusses how the theory of fields and social network analysis is useful to reconcile the micro-macro divide. The approach the United States has taken to addressing teen pregnancy -- a ubiquitous concern in teen education and perennial topic in popular culture -- has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Specifically since the radical overhaul of welfare policy in 1996, Clare Daniel argues, teen pregnancy, previously regarded as a social problem requiring public solutions, is seen as an individual failure on the part of the teens involved.Daniel investigates coordinated teen pregnancy prevention efforts within federal political discourse, along with public policy, popular culture, national advocacy, and local initiatives, revealing the evidence of this transformation. In the 1970s and 1980s, political leaders from both parties used teen pregnancy to strengthen their attacks on racialized impoverished communities. With a new welfare policy in 1996 that rhetoric moved toward blaming teen pregnancy -- seemingly in a race- and class-neutral way -- on the teens who engaged in sex prematurely and irresponsibly. Daniel effectively illustrates that the construction of teen pregnancy as an individual's problem has been a key component in a neoliberal agenda that frees the government from the responsibility of addressing systemic problems of poverty, lack of access to education, ongoing structural racism, and more.

While liberal-representative democracies tend to conform to a consensus-based post-political paradigm where there is no space for alternatives and dissensus; new forms of democracy in practice are emerging from below. This book explores new socially innovative initiatives that have appeared following the 2011 global uprisings. Initiatives that flourish not only as alternative responses to current social needs but also as new forms of democracy, a democracy that comes from below, by and for the'have-nots'. Předkládaná studie sleduje předpoklad, že vztahy mezi inovačně orientovaným jednáním a institucemi jsou vzájemně podmíněné, že se obě instance vzájemně ovlivňují. Inovační jednání a inovace vytvářejí tlak na instituce a jejich změnu, ale současně jsou institucionálním rámcem podporovány a tvarovány. Vzájemnost tohoto vztahu pak zprostředkovávají vědění a komunikace, které prostřednictvím inovací umocňují funkce institucí, ale také je problematizují a představují platformu, na které se hledá rovnováha mezi tlakem ke změně a tíhnutím k sociální uspořádanosti.

The search for ‘the Decent Society'– a fit place in which to live – has informed policy at both governmental and international level. This book analyses its nature and devises a consistent way of measuring the concept world-wide on the basis of a coherent theory of agency within social structure. Influenced by classical sociology and by the economist Amartya Sen, the book posits that societies need to create (a) economic security, (b) social cohesion, (c) social inclusion, and (d) the conditions for empowerment. The model is interactive and recursive; each component provides the requirements for each of the others. Ziel des Autors ist es, die Entstehung und den Wandel von Normen als Prozeß der Innovation und Diffusion zu erklären und nach Möglichkeiten der empirischen Überprüfung zu suchen. Dabei liegt ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf den rechtlichen Institutionen und den bisher in der ordnungsökonomischen Diskussion wenig beachteten Möglichkeiten des Normenwandels innerhalb des Rechtssystems, also Norminnovationen durch die Rechtspraxis. Der Bedarf für eine solche Analyse ergibt sich einerseits - in Fortsetzung der Ordnungstheorie - aus der Einsicht in die ständigen Wandlungen innerhalb einer bestehenden Ordnung. Andererseits kann aber auch nicht angenommen werden, das Problem einer funktionsfähigen Ordnung sei durch eine kulturelle Evolution gelöst. Somit wird eine genauere Untersuchung der Normwandlungsprozesse erforderlich, die zum einen ein breiteres Feld von Disziplinen einbezieht, sich zum andern aber auf konkrete, historische Institutionen konzentrieren muß. Nach einer Orientierung zu den Fragestellungen werden terminologische Vorarbeiten geleistet. Anschließend wendet Okruch sich den methodischen Problemen bei der Erklärung des normativen Wandels zu. Als Ergebnis wird ein methodologisches Minimalprogramm formuliert. Im nächsten Kapitel wird ein breites Spektrum theoretischer Ansätze zur Entstehung und zum Wandel von Normen mit dem gewonnenen Mindeststandard kontrastiert. Der Autor versucht dann auf der Grundlage der geleisteten Analyse eine Synthese mit dem Anspruch, eine evolutorische Theorie des Wandels rechtlicher Normen zu formulieren. Im Interesse einer kursorischen Überprüfung einer solchen Theorie wird der Ansatz schließlich auf den Wandel einzelner Rechtsinstitute des Zivilrechts spezifiziert und rechtsgeschichtlich angereichert.
