Thirteen of the chapters that comprise the contents of this first volume of Native Languages of the A mericas were originally commissioned by the undersigned in his capacity as Editor of the fourteen volume series (1963-1976), Current Trends in Linguistics. All appeared, in 1973, under Part Three of the quadripartite Vol. 10, subtitled Linguistics in North America. Two additional chaplers are being held over for the volume to follow shortly, devoted to Central and South American lan­ guages and linguistics, where they more appropriately belong. A fourteenth chapter, on the'Historiography of native North A merican linguistics,'was written similarly by invitation, for Vol. 13, subtitled Historiography of Linguistics, published in 1975. Both Volumes 10 and 13 were jointly financed by the United States National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities, with an enhancing contribution to the former by the Canada Council. The generosity of these funding agencies was, of course, previously acknowledged in my respective Editor's Introductions to the two books mentioned, but cannot be repeated too often: without their welcome and timely assistance, the global project could scarcely have been realized on so comprehensive a scale. The Current Trends in Linguistics series was a long-term venture of Mouton Publishers, of The Hague, under the imaginative in-house direction of Peter de Rid­ der. Various spin-offs were foreseen, and some of them happily realized.

Kompost ist zugleich eine Ontologie und eine Art und Weise des Wissens, der Wissensproduktion, die gemeinsam das vermeintlich Gegebene ‚der Welt‘ auseinanderdröseln, um daraus vielzählige Welten hervorzubringen. Alles ist und bedeutet gleichzeitig, ereignet, affiziert, transformiert sich: Wissen kompostiert Welt kompostiert Wissen. Kompost unterläuft Trennungen von Ästhetik, Ethik, Epistemologie und Ontologie, wie sie für das westliche Denken charakteristisch sind. Ausschließung, Einschließung, Gewalt, race, class, gender müssen kompostiert werden, müssen ver/antwortet, gehalten, anders gedacht und anders erzählt, Privilegien zersetzt und verlernt werden. Hierbei nehmen radikal nichtbinäre, pluriversale, relationale, queerfeministische Ökologien onto-epistemologische Gestalt an, die Relationalitäten, Responseabilities und Sorge sowie RaumZeiten und Materien/Materialisierungen verschränkt mit-denken, gerade ohne über sie zu verfügen.

Postkoloniale Ansätze in der Ethnologie zeichnen sich durch eine kritische Reflexion der eigenen Wissenschaftsgeschichte aus und denken dabei theoretische und methodologische Ansätze des Faches weiter. Sie laden dazu ein, sich kritisch mit der Verstrickung der Disziplin in koloniale Prozesse und der Aufrechterhaltung von ungleichen Machtstrukturen auseinanderzusetzen. Postkoloniale Ansätze hinterfragen die Autorität ethnologischer Wissenskonstruktion und die damit verbundene Repräsentation des kulturell „Anderen“ sowie des „Eigenen“. Darüber hinaus lenkt eine postkoloniale Ethnologie den Blick auf transkulturelle Verflechtungen, etwa lokale Interpretationen globaler Symbole und Praktiken. Damit destabilisiert sie vermeintlich „universale“ Erklärungsmuster und Konzepte, verortet sie in Zeit und Raum.Die Beiträge in diesem, Judith Schlehe gewidmeten Sammelband veranschaulichen, welche fruchtbaren Implikationen ein postkolonialer Impetus für die ethnologische Forschung, Theorie und Praxis bereithalten kann. Angelehnt an die von Judith Schlehe entwickelte „Tandem“-Forschung stellen die AutorInnen in ihren eigenen Studien kollaborative und kulturell reziproke Prozesse vor. Sie zeigen alternative Deutungen zu „westlichen“ Sichtweisen auf und verdeutlichen deren Relevanz für das Fach.

This edited volume gathers top scholars from across disciplines, generations, and countries to provide constructive commentary on the theory, methods and practices of institutional ethnography. These contributions explore themes of relevance to institutional ethnographers that are both enduring and newly emerging: how institutional ethnographers can take an expanded view of social institutions, how they might explore the dynamics of ruling relations over time, what results from understanding experience as dialogue (including internal or in-skull dialogue), the significance of “standpoint,” and the opportunities for institutional ethnographers to move beyond texts as they discover and describe social relations. A key aspect of Critical Commentary on Institutional Ethnography, and one that distinguishes it from others, is the forward-looking orientation of the authors. This perspective allows them to establish bridges between the institutional ethnography that has been developed heretofore and the potential that is looming for such a mode of inquiry into the social. As such, the book is both informative and inspirational.

This Palgrave Pivot strives to recount and understand Indigenous Law, as set within a remote community in northern Australia. It pays close attention to the realpolitik and high-level political functioning of Indigenous Laws, which inspires a discussion of how this Law models the relational, influences governance and emplaces people in an ordered kincentric lifeworld. The book argues that Indigenous Law can be examined for the ways in which it is a deliberate, stabilizing and powerful force to maintain communal order in relation to Country, a counter framing to popular and ‘soft law or soft power asset'visions of such Laws often held in the national and international imaginary. It is the latter which too often renders this knowledge esoteric and relinquishes it to a category of lore or folklore. This is an open access book.

Ethnographie setzt an der empirischen Erforschung von sozialem Handeln, Lebenswelten, Praktiken, institutionellen Kontexten und kulturellen Orientierungen durch Beobachtung, Ko-Präsenz, längerfristige Teilnahme und Teilhabe an dem zu untersuchenden Feld an. Ihre Ursprünge liegen in der Ethnologie und im Journalismus. Die in den 1910er bis zu den 1930er Jahren durchgeführten Studien der Chicago School haben beide Verfahrensansätze aufgegriffen, um die Dynamik und die zunehmende Unübersichtlichkeit gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit beschreiben zu können. Dies hat zur Entstehung einer soziologischen Ethnographie geführt, die ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf soziale und kulturelle Differenzierungen in der je eigenen Gesellschaft richtet.Ziel und Anliegen des Handbuches ist es, einen systematischen Überblick über Ausgangslagen, zentrale Ansätze, Debatten und Ausdifferenzierungen von soziologischer Ethnographie als Forschungsweise zu geben und zugleich die Entfaltung ethnographischer Forschung von ihren historischen Anfängen und Grundlegungen Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über Weiterentwicklungen in den 1960er Jahren, entscheidende Weichenstellungen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren bis hin zu ihrer gegenwärtigen Vielgestaltigkeit nachzuzeichnen.

In 1962 Norbert Elias was invited as a temporary professor at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. He taught, employed fieldwork, travelled, and met many people in postcolonial Africa. When Elias left Ghana in 1964, he had laid the basic groundwork for a fundamental sociological argument on human societies.The volume on hand is a selection of his unpublished writings based on these experiences. Together they touch upon not only the well-known criticism of Eurocentrism and a developmental perspective but also what could be considered the core of Elias's work: the concept of civilisation. In a foreword, Dieter Reicher and Adrian Jitschin have endeavoured to explain and break down the relations of Elias's African experience to the rest of his work and biography. They also clarified some misleading interpretations of Elias's time in Africa. Finally, Arjan Post has uncovered the previously unknown fascinating story of Elias'encounter with Malcolm X in an epilogue.

Das Buch basiert auf Untersuchungen, die zwischen 2017 und 2020 mit 1632 österreichi­schen, deut­schen und Studierenden anderer Nationen in Wien durchgeführt wurden. Die Teilneh­mer und Teilnehmerinnen be­fan­den sich während der Coronakrise teilweise in Quarantäne oder waren zumindest auf Online-Teaching und Home-Office angewiesen. Wie gehen junge Menschen mit Freiheitsbe­schrän­kungen um? Was tun sie, um körperlich und geistig „gesund“ durch die Krise zu kom­men? Gerade in qualitativen Forschungsprojekten werden häufig unterschiedlichste Daten gesammelt und analysiert. Der Sammelband diskutiert die Potenziale und die Herausforderungen, die damit insbesondere für die Kommunikationswissenschaft und die sozialwissenschaftliche Medienforschung verbunden sind. Neben einer konzeptuellen Einordnung bietet der Band eine Übersicht aktueller Forschungsprojekte und zeigt auf, welche Herausforderungen und Potenziale der Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Daten mit sich bringt.

It is a feature of the twenty-first century that world languages are displacing local languages at an alarming rate, transforming social relations and complicating cultural transmission in the process. This language shift—the gradual abandonment of minority languages in favor of national or international languages—is often in response to inequalities in power, signaling a pressure to conform to the political and economic structures represented by the newly dominant languages. In its most extreme form, language shift can result in language death and thus the permanent loss of traditional knowledge and lifeways. To combat this, indigenous and scholarly communities around the world have undertaken various efforts, from archiving and lexicography to the creation of educational and cultural programs. What works in one community, however, may not work in another. Indeed, while the causes of language endangerment may be familiar, the responses to it depend on “highly specific local conditions and opportunities.” In keeping with this premise, the editors of this volume insist that to understand language endangerment, “researchers and communities must come to understand what is happening to the speakers, not just what is happening to the language.” The eleven case studies assembled here strive to fill a gap in the study of endangered languages by providing much-needed sociohistorical and ethnographic context and thus connecting specific language phenomena to larger national and international issues. The goal is to provide theoretical and methodological tools for researchers and organizers to best address the specific needs of communities facing language endangerment. The case studies here span regions as diverse as Kenya, Siberia, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Venezuela, the United States, and Germany. The volume includes a foreword by linguistic anthropologist Jane Hill and an afterword by poet and linguist Ofelia Zepeda.

Kunst wird gesehen, gehört, geschmeckt, gerochen und gespürt. Sie wird im Zusammenspiel mit den Sinnen empfunden, erfahren und erlebt. Wie Kunst von wem wahrgenommen wird, ist – so die soziologische These – stets eingebettet in praktisches, inkorporiertes und theoretisches Wissen, das durch kognitive, sinnliche, leibliche und ästhetische Begegnungen mit Kunst zugleich irritiert, nach seinen Grenzen und – noch grundsätzlicher – nach den Grenzen bestehender Gewissheiten befragt werden kann. Wahrnehmen von, durch und mit Kunst wird so auch als soziale Praxis relevant. Mit diesemZugang gehen Fragen danach einher, wie das Sehen, Hören, Schmecken, Riechen, Fühlen, dessen Eindrücken wir uns kaum entziehen können, sozialen Prägungen unterworfen und durch Machtverhältnisse geformt ist, wie aber auch durch das Soziale Interaktionen ermöglicht und Praktiken organisiert werden. Im vorliegenden Band kommen eine Bandbreite an soziologischen, philosophischen, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen zu Wort, die sich explizit den sozialen Aspekten des Wahrnehmens von Kunst in facettenreichen Dimensionen und Aspekten widmen. Die Kategorie Race gewinnt aktuell wieder stärker an politischer Sichtbarkeit, bedingt vor allem durch die Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, Migration und Flucht, nicht zuletzt auch durch Theorieansätze wie Postcolonial Studies, Critical Race Theory, Intersektionalität oder Decolonizing der Gender Studies. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es zunächst medienspezifische Strategien in ihrer Vielfalt sowie historischen Entwicklung kritisch zu befragen, die zu rassistischem Denken und rassistischer Politik beigetragen haben und bis heute beitragen. Die Kategorie Genre als eine ambivalente und komplexe Wahrnehmungs- und Sinngebungsstruktur an der Schnittstelle von Produktion, Rezeption und Ästhetik bietet sich besonders an, um sich medientechnologischen Traditionen und Mitteln anzunähern, die Race politisch wirksam machen, verschiedene Ideologien bedienen, Affekte produzieren und zugleich jedoch immer auch Widerstände oder neue Sichtweisen und Artikulationsformen hervorbringen. Digitale Assistenztechnologien sollen ältere Menschen unterstützen, auch bei altersbedingten Einschränkungen möglichst lange selbstbestimmt leben zu können. Wie aber werden diese Technologien entwickelt? Welche Vorstellungen von Alter(n) spielen dabei eine Rolle? Wie werden ältere Menschen in die Technikentwicklung eingebunden? Und welche Ziele verfolgen Politik, Technikentwickler•innen und Gesellschaft mit der Entwicklung digitaler Asssistenztechnologien? Das Buch gibt anhand einer ethnographischen Studie Antworten auf diese Fragen und zeigt auf, welche Voraussetzungen in Forschung und Entwicklung geschaffen werden müssen, damit digitale Technologien den Bedürfnissen älterer Menschen entsprechen und sie in ihrem Alltag unterstützen.

Die Studie von Alexandra Bernhardt beschäftigt sich mit Coworking Spaces und ihren Atmosphären. Neben einer umfassenden Betrachtung der Rolle von Atmosphären wird die besondere Bedeutung von Gemeinschaft im Kontext dieser Arbeitsräume näher beleuchtet. Den Kern der Untersuchung bilden zwei Fallstudien in urbanen Coworking Spaces, wobei ein an der Ethnografie orientiertes, methodenplurales qualitatives Forschungsdesign verfolgt wird. Im Rahmen der Analyse wird zum einen betrachtet, was Coworking im Alltag und damit die neue Gemeinschaftlichkeit bei der Arbeit ausmacht: Dabei werden relevante Praktiken und Rituale, räumliche Arrangements und Atmosphären in ihrer Komposition herausgearbeitet. Zum anderen rücken die Coworkenden, ihr Raumhandeln und damit verbundene Haltungen näher in den Blick: Es wird aufgezeigt, wie sich die Nutzer•innen Coworking Spaces als Arbeits- und Gemeinschaftsräume erschließen und welche Rolle Atmosphären spielen. Zudem werden soziale Gebilde herausgestellt, die von den Coworkenden in Bezug auf ihren Coworking Space aufgegriffen werden und die den Coworking-Space-Alltag mitprägen. Auch werden Spannungen aufgedeckt, die aus einem Nebeneinander von Gemeinschafts- und Dienstleistungslogik entstehen, und der Umgang damit näher betrachtet.

In this interdisciplinary study, Mónika Fodor explores how intergenerational memory narratives embedded in the speaker's own stories impact ethnic subjectivity construction.Working with thematically selected life experiences from interviews conducted with second- and late-generation European Americans, Fodor demonstrates how the storytellers position themselves in a range of social, cultural, and political discourses to claim or disclaim ethnicity as part of their subjectivity. Tying narrative content, structural, and performance analysis to the sociological and sociolinguistic concepts of'symbolic capital'and'investment,'Fodor unpacks the changing levels of identifying with one's ancestral ethnic heritage and its potential to carry meaning for late-generation descendants. In doing so, she reveals the shared features of identification among individuals through narrative meaning-making, which may be the basis of real or imagined, heterolocal discourse community formation and sustained ethnic subjectivity. The narrative analysis demonstrates how the cohesive force among members of the community is the shared knowledge of story frames and the personalized retelling of these.Ethnic Subjectivity in Intergenerational Memory Narratives draws on inherited, often moving, personal experiences that offers new insights into the so far largely unexplored terrain of the narrative structure of intergenerationally transferred memory retellings, that will be of great interest to students and scholars of ethnic studies, migration and identity studies.

This open access book explores how young people engage with chemical substances in their everyday lives. It builds upon and supplements a large body of literature on young people's use of drugs and alcohol to highlight the subjectivities and socialities that chemical use enables across diverse socio-cultural settings, illustrating how young people seek to avoid harm, while harnessing the beneficial effects of chemical use. The book is based on multi-sited anthropological research in Southeast Asia, Europe and the US, and presents insights from collaborative and contrasting analysis. Hardon brings new perspectives to debates across drug policy studies, pharmaceutical cultures and regulation, science and technology studies, and youth and precarity in post-industrial societies.

The social sciences have seen a substantial increase in comparative and multi-sited ethnographic projects over the last three decades. Yet, at present, researchers seeking to design comparative field projects have few scholarly works detailing how comparison is conducted in divergent ethnographic approaches. In Beyond the Case, Corey M. Abramson and Neil Gong have gathered together several experts in field research to address these issues by showing how practitioners employing contemporary iterations of ethnographic traditions such as phenomenology, grounded theory, positivism, and interpretivism, use comparison in their works. The contributors connect the long history of comparative (and anti-comparative) ethnographic approaches to their contemporary uses. By honing in on how ethnographers render sites, groups, or cases analytically commensurable and comparable, Beyond the Case offers a new lens for examining the assumptions, payoffs, and potential drawbacks of different forms of comparative ethnography.

While the term ‘culture'has come to be very widely used in both popular and academic discourse, it has a variety of meanings, and the differences among these have not been given sufficient attention. This book explores these meanings, and identifies some of the problems associated with them, as well as examining the role that values should play in cultural analysis. The development of four, very different, conceptions of culture is traced from the nineteenth century onwards: a notion of aesthetic cultivation associated with Matthew Arnold; the evolutionary view of culture characteristic of nineteenth-century anthropology; the idea of diverse cultures characteristic of twentieth and twenty-first century anthropology; and a conception of culture as a process of situated meaning-making – found today across anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. These conceptions of culture are interrogated, and a reformulation of the concept is sketched. This book will be of interest to students and scholars across a variety of fields, including anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and education.

This book takes the globally recognised phenomenon of drag king performances as an opportunity for critical inquiry into the rise and fall of an urban scene for lesbian and queer women in Sydney, Australia (circa 1999-2012). Exploring how a series of weekly events provided the site for intimate encounters, Drysdale reveals the investments made by participants that worked to sustain the sense of a small world and anchor the expansive imaginary of lesbian cultural life. But what happens when scenes fade, as they invariably do? Intimate Investments in Drag King Cultures is unique in capturing the perspective of a scene at the moment of its decline, revealing the process by which a contemporary movement becomes layered with historical significance. Bringing together the theoretical tradition of scene studies with recent work on the affective potentialities of the everyday and the mobile urban spaces they inhabit, this book has appeal to scholars working across gender, sexuality and culture.

The Lost Ethnographies reports on the methodological lessons learnt from ethnographic projects that, viewed superficially, failed. Experienced researchers write about projects they planned, and were excited about, which then never began, had to be abandoned, or took such unexpected directions that it became a different piece of work altogether. The topics and settings are varied and disparate, but the lessons learnt have important similarities. This collection focuses on absences; topics and settings that remain under researched; taken for granted aspects of social life that have not been scrutinized, and finally the potential insights that are gained when absences are carefully examined and explored. Readers will learn a great deal about research design, fundraising, writing up, access negotiations, serendipity in the field, and the complex interaction between the body and the brain of the ethnographer and the realities of ethnographic research. Maximising learning from the ‘failings'of ourselves and of others is the positive message of the collection. The most poignant chapters are those in which the author ‘returns'to reread and reflect on a past project; something that is not done often enough, partly because it can be painful. The accounts of projects which had to be abandoned or radically changed offer hope to researchers facing difficulties in their own investigations. These reflections, on projects that were never even begun, show how to gain fresh energy and social science insight from apparent rejection, and the collection approaches the whole concept of lost ethnography in provocative ways.

The World Multiple, as a collection, is an ambitious ethnographic experiment in understanding how the world is experienced and generated in multiple ways through people's everyday practices. Against the dominant assumption that the world is a single universal reality that can only be known by modern expert science, this book argues that worlds are worlded—they are socially and materially crafted in multiple forms in everyday practices involving humans, landscapes, animals, plants, fungi, rocks, and other beings. These practices do not converge to a singular knowledge of the world, but generate a world multiple—a world that is more than one integrated whole, yet less than many fragmented parts.The book brings together authors from Europe, Japan, and North America, in conversation with ethnographic material from Africa, the Americas, and Asia, in order to explore the possibilities of the world multiple to reveal new ways to intervene in the legacies of colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism that inflict damage on humans and nonhumans. As such, it addresses the Taiwan question in the seventeenth century, presenting for the first time the process leading to the island's integration with the mainland through the story of the Zheng family and Admiral Shi Lang. The author has confirmed Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga)'s Ming loyalism and his politicization of the conflicts on the China coast. Thus, the author concludes that Zheng was a “revolutionary traditionalist” who transformed sheer violence into a political movement in an unprecedented way. He politicized the entire region and paved the way for the inevitable conflict with Mainland China. After repeated political talks had failed, the rising Qing China decided to take Taiwan by force. Though seaborne warfare was a formidable task at the time, the man who overcame these difficulties and completed the seemingly impossible mission was none other than Admiral Shi Lang. The book provides a new and more justifiable assessment of the Admiral's contribution to the conquest of Taiwan and pacification of coastal unrest. This study argues that the defining feature of contemporary advertising is the interconnectedness between consumer participation and calculative media platforms. It critically investigates how audience participation unfolds in an algorithmic media infrastructure in which brands develop media devices to codify, process and modulate human capacities and actions.With the shift from a broadcast to an interactive media system, advertisers have reinvented themselves as the strategic interface between computational media systems and the lived experience and living bodies of consumers. Where once advertising relied predominantly on symbolic appeals to affect consumers, it now centres on the use of computational devices that codify, monitor, analyse and control their behaviours. Advertisers have worked to stimulate and harness consumer participation for several generations. Consumers undertook the productive work of making brands a part of their cultural identities and practices. With the emergence of a computational mode of advertising consumer participation extends beyond the expressive activity of creating and circulating meaning. It now involves making the lived experience and the living body available to the experimental capacities of media platforms and devices. In this mode of advertising brands become techno-cultural processes that integrate calculative and cultural functions. Brand Machines, Sensory Media and Calculative Culture conceptualises and theorises these significant changes in advertising. It takes consumer participation and its interconnectedness with calculative media platforms as the fundamental aspect of contemporary advertising and critically investigates how advertising, consumer participation and technology are interrelated in creating and facilitating lived experiences that create value for brands.
