The Cultural Work of the Late Nineteenth-Century Hostess explores the influence well-placed, energetic women had on literary and political culture in the U.S. and in England in the years 1870-1920. Fields, an American, was first married to James T. Fields, a prominent Boston publisher; after his death she became companion to Sarah Orne Jewett, one of the foremost New England writers. Gladstone was a daughter of William Gladstone, one of Great Britain's most famous Prime Ministers. Both became well known as hostesses, entertaining the leading figures of their day; both also kept journals and wrote letters in which they recorded those figures'conversations. Susan K. Harris reads these records to exhibit the impact such women had on the cultural life of their times. The Cultural Work of the Late Nineteenth-Century Hostess shows how Fields and Gladstone negotiated alliances, won over key figures to their parties'designs, and fought to develop major cultural institutions ranging from the Organization of Boston Charities to London's Royal College of Music.

William Cobbett, the Press and Rural England offers a thorough re-appraisal of William Cobbett (1763-1835), situating his journalism and rural radicalism in relation to contemporary political debates.

This open access book explores contemporary practices that challenge science, arguing that this matter cannot be simply disregarded as a new manifestation of “anti-scientism”. It scrutinizes the processes through which knowledge claims, refused by established institutions and the scientific community, seek legitimacy. Assuming an agnostic analytical stance, it explores the actors involved in such processes and their social worlds, their interactions with epistemic institutions, and the ways in which they enact such refused knowledge in their daily lives. Drawing on a three-year mixed-method research project, this collection demonstrates how refused knowledge can be seen as a distinct mode of knowing, employed in response to the uncertainties of everyday life. Thus, it offers a deeper understanding not only of how refused knowledge garners credibility, but also of how knowledge at large – including scientific knowledge – emerges from specific sociotechnical assemblages.

Kompost unterläuft Trennungen von Ästhetik, Ethik, Epistemologie und Ontologie, wie sie für das westliche Denken charakteristisch sind. Ausschließung, Einschließung, Gewalt, race, class, gender müssen kompostiert werden, müssen ver/antwortet, gehalten, anders gedacht und anders erzählt, Privilegien zersetzt und verlernt werden. Hierbei nehmen radikal nichtbinäre, pluriversale, relationale, queerfeministische Ökologien onto-epistemologische Gestalt an, die Relationalitäten, Responseabilities und Sorge sowie RaumZeiten und Materien/Materialisierungen verschränkt mit-denken, gerade ohne über sie zu verfügen.

This open access book considers the concept of the hinterland as a crucial tool for understanding the global and planetary present as a time defined by the lasting legacies of colonialism, increasing labor precarity under late capitalist regimes, and looming climate disasters. Traditionally seen to serve a (colonial) port or market town, the hinterland here becomes a lens to attend to the times and spaces shaped and experienced across the received categories of the urban, rural, wilderness or nature. In straddling these categories, the concept of the hinterland foregrounds the human and more-than-human lively processes and forms of care that go on even in sites defined by capitalist extraction and political abandonment. Bringing together scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the book rethinks hinterland materialities, affectivities, and ecologies across places and cultural imaginations, Global North and South, urban and rural, and land and water.

This book offers a philosophical approach to tourism as a permanent factor in the lifestyle, economy, and culture of the contemporary global community. In der Zeit des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs Deutschlands nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg waren die Wochenschauen im Vorprogramm jeder Kinovorstellung eine bedeutende Informationsquelle. Mit eindrucksvollen Bildern auf einer großen Leinwand – begleitet von gesprochenem Kommentar, Musik und Geräusch – gaben sie Orientierung und prägten die Erinnerung. In zahlreichen dokumentarischen Film- und Fernsehformaten werden bis heute einzelne Bilder oder kurze Sequenzen aus der Kino-Wochenschau als historische Belege, als Illustrationen oder zur Dramatisierung verwendet. Die außergewöhnlichen Prinzipien der Informationsvermittlung kommen dabei jedoch nicht mehr zur Geltung. Um das Publikum zu erreichen, war damals eine Mischung aus informativen Berichten und unterhaltenden Beiträgen unerlässlich. Die in diesem Buch vorgenommenen Fallanalysen spiegeln elementare Themenbereiche der Zeit des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs beider deutscher Staaten (1950-1965) wider. Neben den Prinzipien der audiovisuellenGestaltung wird auch die zentrale Vermittlungsstrategie herausgearbeitet. Transmediale und transnationale Aspekte, die hierbei eine Rolle spielen, weisen die Wochenschau als Teil eines (internationalen) Mediensystems aus.

This book presents a unique framework for the inclusion of ecomedia in the English language classroom to help learners cultivate global citizenship. Foregrounding learner agency in a world at risk, the author proposes a framework that hinges on human rights and critical eco-cosmopolitanism to help learners position themselves in discourses on climate change and act for transformation. The book discusses eco-documentaries as multimodal, factional texts against the background of cutting-edge research, refuting a definition based on the binary of fiction and non-fiction. Translating the insights gained from this discussion to the language education context, learners are conceptualised as active designers of meaning making when engaged with eco-documentaries. Based on this discussion, the book puts forth an innovative, multiliteracies-informed concept which is embedded in a sustainability-oriented pedagogy of hope, which encourages learners to learn and practice languages of hope and advocacy. The book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of ecopedagogy, sustainability education, global citizenship education and cultural learning, film pedagogy and language education, as well as language educators.

In der aktualisierten, 2. Auflage geht es weiterhin darum, aus kultur- und medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive das öffentliche Auftreten von Donald Trump zu untersuchen und zu zeigen, wie der 45. US-Präsident an der gesellschaftlichen Konfrontation unterschiedlicher politischer Gruppen partizipierte, diese kommunikativ weiter eskalierte und von der sich immer radikaler gestaltenden Polarisierung politisch zu profitieren hoffte. Allerdings weitet sich der Untersuchungsfokus und nimmt nunmehr auch die beiden letzten Jahre seiner Amtszeit mit in den Blick, in denen Trump durch immer schrillere Töne im Kontext von Black Live Matters und der Corona-Krise, durch die Anheizung von Verschwörungstheorien und durch radikale Diskreditierung von politischen Verfahren und Institutionen die US-amerikanische Gesellschaft bis an den Rand eines Bürgerkriegs getrieben hat. Diskutiert werden Trumps Mediengebrauch, seine mit Herabsetzungen, Beleidigungen und Unterstellungen arbeitenden Adressierungsstrategien und seine Politik der Affekte. Die Beiträge des Bandes rücken den „great disruptor“ in ein Spannungsfeld von Populärkultur, fragmentierter Öffentlichkeit und rhetorischer Feindsetzung.

This book proposes new design and development models for local cultural and creative products, intended to improve the quality of these products and to preserve or enhance their local economic benefits. Building a knowledge base of design symbols and information gleaned from local history can be used to simplify the process of creative product design and increase the efficiency of product development. This book proposes a method for grasping the essential elements of symbols and culture so as to accelerate product development and capture the essence of culture in product design. In addition, it demonstrates that exhibitions applying scenario-oriented design can not only strengthen the representation of local culture, history and stories, but also support product consumption. As a result, the book offers a valuable asset for boosting the efficiency of creative product design and promoting the consumption of creative cultural products.

Die Disability Studies sind ein international etabliertes, anspruchsvolles und innovatives Forschungsfeld, in dem es darum geht, das Phänomen „(Nicht-)Behinderung“ als historische, soziale, politische und kulturelle Konstruktion zu fassen, es somit aus der medizinisch-pädagogischen Umklammerung zu lösen und unter einer genuin sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive zu untersuchen. Ähnlich den Gender Studies oder Queer Studies handelt es sich bei den Disability Studies um einen Ansatz, der eine emanzipatorische Zielrichtung verfolgt. Das Handbuch führt in den internationalen Diskurs ein und bietet einen fundierten Überblick über die Entwicklung, Grundlagen und Debatten der deutschsprachigen Disability Studies. Die Aufsätze behandeln zentrale theoretische, methodische und empirische Fragen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen sowie intersektionale und querliegende Perspektiven der Studien zu „dis/ability“. The book presents aspects of cross-currents of theorizing of self, culture and society in the contemporary Taiwan. Social theorizing has been addressed critically, reflectively and creatively by the philosophical, religious, psychological and literary traditions of one of the world's great civilizations Theorizing is a dynamic movement of self, culture, society and the world as it is related to our actions, reflections, meditations to understand the world more meaningfully and holistically as well as to transform it. But much of social theorizing in the modern world is primarily Euro-American and despite the socalled globalization of knowledge, this condition of one-sided Euro-American valorization of knowledge and neglect of others continues unabated. There is very little attention to theorizing about the human condition emerging from other parts of the world such as Taiwan and its global implication. This book transforms this condition by mapping the field of theorizing in a wider spectrum of philosophy, psychology, religions, social sciences and humanities in contemporary Taiwan.

This edited volume informs readers about changing norms and meanings of borders and underlines recent scenarios that shape these borders. It focuses mainly on the Mediterranean and Middle East regions through the following questions: What are the social, cultural, philosophical, political, economic and aesthetic reasons for spatial segregation within contemporary territories and cities? In the world of globalization and networks, what are the new limitations of space? What are the alienating differences between interior and exterior, private and public, urban and rural, local and global, and real and virtual? Are spatial definitions and divisions more likely to be weakened (if not totally erased) by effects of globalization and mobility, similar to the dissolution of borders between countries? Or are local practices and measures likely to become more apparent with emerging trends such as sustainability and identity? Authored by international scholars, all chapters are arranged under four main parts: Urban and Rural, Global and Local, Physical and Sensual, Real and Virtual. Hence, different concepts and definitions of borders along with varying methods and tools for questioning their essence in architectural and urban spaces will be introduced. Die Kategorie Race gewinnt aktuell wieder stärker an politischer Sichtbarkeit, bedingt vor allem durch die Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, Migration und Flucht, nicht zuletzt auch durch Theorieansätze wie Postcolonial Studies, Critical Race Theory, Intersektionalität oder Decolonizing der Gender Studies. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es zunächst medienspezifische Strategien in ihrer Vielfalt sowie historischen Entwicklung kritisch zu befragen, die zu rassistischem Denken und rassistischer Politik beigetragen haben und bis heute beitragen. This open access edited volume provides theoretical, practical, and historical perspectives on art and education in a post-digital, post-internet era. Recently, these terms have been attached to artworks, artists, exhibitions, and educational practices that deal with the relationships between online and offline, digital and physical, and material and immaterial. By taking the current socio-technological conditions of the post-digital and the post-internet seriously, contributors challenge fixed narratives and field-specific ownership of these terms, as well as explore their potential and possible shortcomings when discussing art and education. Chapters also recognize historical forebears of digital art and education while critically assessing art, media, and other realms of engagement. This book encourages readers to explore what kind of educational futures might a post-digital, post-internet era engender.

This open access edited book provides new thinking on scientific identity formation. This book offers a novel approach to innovations in theories of communication and social development. It proposes that'the man is the message'. It argues that communication is woven into the fabric of people's daily lives, and a scholar with a keen eye, an open heart and an inquiring mind should be able to capture the ubiquitous phenomena of communication and turn them into theoretical observations and even innovations.Although most of the propositions in this book cannot be tested empirically, at least for now, owing to the limitations inherent in current research methods, they complement the empirical studies of communication based on measurement.With due understanding that Western social sciences, including communication studies, focus on analytical thinking and the fine division of disciplines, this book takes a more synthetic approach to analyzing communication, often integrating and contextualizing its various factors and channels and categories in analysis and writing. Providing a holistic picture of communication that features the crux of the matter—how to reach and capture the heart and soul of people without any attempt to manipulate their minds, it is more humanistic than many other books on communication studies. Although much of the thinking in the book is seemingly Chinese, it nevertheless has a universal appeal.

Im Zuge der Historisierung von Theorie ist die Rolle von Übersetzungen sowie die vermittelnde Rolle der Übersetzer•innen bisher nur am Rande berücksichtigt worden. Doch für die Rezeption, Internationalisierung und Kanonisierung von Theorie spielen diese eine entscheidende Rolle, weshalb sich dieser Band der Geschichte der Theorie in Hinblick auf ihre Übersetzungen nähert. Die Brisanz, die Theorie in Deutschland, Frankreich und den USA von Anfang der 1960er bis Ende der 1990er Jahre entfalten konnte, verdankt sich nicht nur der Mobilität ihrer Protagonist•innen, sondern auch der Verfügbarkeit von Übersetzungen, in denen Theorie von einer Sprache in die andere übergeht, dabei ‚anschlussfähig‘ wird. Theorieübersetzungsgeschichte rückt die Arbeit von Übersetzer•innen in den Blick, die wechselseitige Beziehung von Übersetzungstheorie und poststrukturalistisch-dekonstruktivem Denken sowie ein spezifisches Verständnis von Übersetzung, das mit dem Anspruch verbunden ist, im Verlauf gegenwärtiger Debatten zu intervenieren.

Dieses Buch präsentiert Cultural Studies, beginnend mit der österreichischen Aufbruchsstimmung und begleitet von internationalen Stimmen der Tagungsteilnehmer•innen in Tampere und Birmingham. Es zeigt die vielfältige Forschungswelt der Cultural Studies bis heute und schlägt Brücken in die Zukunft.Cultural Studies waren ein Versprechen und vielleicht auch eine wissenschaftliche Verheißung. Im wahrsten Wortsinn erschienen sie, als in Finnland die ersten internationalen Tagungen stattfanden, wie ein Nordlicht am Horizont: Revontulet. Die Crossroads-Konferenzen in Tampere (1996, 1998) und Birmingham (2000) waren für Wissenschaftler•innen der Beginn eines interventionistischen Wissenschaftsprojekts, das in Wien seinen Ursprung im Institut für Kulturstudien (IKUS) hatte.

Geld ist heute ein sachlich, zeitlich und sozial ubiquitäres Phänomen. Es fällt schwer – trotz sich verstetigender Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrisen in der jüngeren Vergangenheit –, sich Geld wegzudenken oder sich auch nur ein anderes Geld(-system) zu denken. Diese Ubiquität steht im Kontrast zu einer hochgradig selektiven wissenschaftlichen Behandlung, die es verunmöglicht, den kultur-evolutionären Stellenwert des Geldes adäquat abzuschätzen. Die neoklassische Ökonomik ist durch eine (seit Adam Smith kolportierte) tauschtheoretische Engführung von Geld limitiert. Geld gilt dort strukturell als auch verteilungspolitisch weithin als neutral, also nicht als evolutionärer Mechanismus aus eigenem Recht. Die Neue Wirtschaftssoziologie hat zwar zu Recht den Modellplatonismus der Mainstream-Ökonomik kritisiert und auf die soziale Einbettung der Wirtschaft hingewiesen. Sie hat es in diesem Zuge aber nicht zu einer eigenständigen Geldtheorie gebracht. Das Buch präsentiert Überlegungen zu einer interdisziplinär informierten soziologischen Geldtheorie in kultur-evolutionärer Absicht. In zwei historischen Studien (zu Mesopotamien ab dem vierten Jahrtausend v.u.Z. sowie zum Griechenland des ersten Jahrtausends v.u.Z.) werden die koevolutionären Prozesse von Geldentwicklung, Schriftentwicklung und Rationalitätsentwicklung detailliert rekonstruiert. Einer solchen Forschungsperspektive gelingt es, die in der Soziologie etablierte problematische Dichotomie von Einbettungs- und Ausdifferenzierungsparadigmen durch eine integrative Perspektive zu überwinden und aufzuheben.

Michael Field deploys a different form in each volume of their lyric poetry: translations of Sappho, ekphrasis, songs, sonnets, and devotional verse. They also appropriate and revise the dramatic genres of verse tragedy and the masque. Each of these experiments in form enable Michael Field to differently address the cultural questions that beset late-Victorian women writers. Drawing on the insights of new lyric studies and new formalism, this book analyzes Michael Field's continual quest for the aesthetic forms that best express their evolving ideas about identity and sexuality, gender and sacrifice, lyric voice and authority.

This book provides 18 lively commentaries on Lacan's Seminar VIII, Transference (1960-61) that explore its theoretical and philosophical consequences in the clinic, the classroom, and society. Including contributions from clinicians as well as scholars working in philosophy, literature, and culture studies, the commentaries presented here represent a wide-range of disciplinary perspectives on the concept of transference. Welchen Einfluss hat die Gestaltung des gegenständlichen Umfeldes auf zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen und wie werden diese gewollt oder ungewollt mit den Dingen mitgestaltet? Auf welche Weise werden durch Design und Architektur soziale Kompetenzen wie zwischenmenschliches Erkennen, Handeln und Erleben ermöglicht oder verunmöglicht? Autor•innen verschiedener Disziplinen gehen diesen Fragen nach und eröffnen hierbei eine dingorientierte Perspektive auf das Themenfeld des Social Design, die sowohl geeignet ist, eine Brücke zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu bilden, als auch einschlägiges Studienmaterial für die sozialen Dimensionen der Gestaltung zu versammeln.

Angst ist nicht nur eine menschliche Grundemotion, sondern ein gesellschaftliches Phänomen. Jüngst wurde sie zum charakteristischen Gefühl westlicher Gegenwartsgesellschaften erklärt und insbesondere mit politisch regressiven Entwicklungen, allen voran dem Aufstieg des Rechtspopulismus, in Verbindung gebracht. Als Instrumente des Employer Brandings analysiert die Autorin Stellenangebote global handelnder amerikanischer Konzerne, die von 2015 bis 2016 eine Niederlassung in Polen und in Deutschland hatten. Sie vergleicht diese mit Stellenangeboten lokal handelnder polnischer und deutscher Unternehmen, um die länderspezifischen Unterschiede auf der Makro- und Mikroebene zu identifizieren. Die Autorin fokussiert sich zunächst auf Schlüsselwörter, die im Rahmen des Konzepts /passion at work/ pragmalinguistisch analysiert werden. Drawing on the culture-centered approach (CCA), this book re-imagines culture as a site for resisting the neocolonial framework of neoliberal governmentality. Culture emerged in the 20th Century as a conceptual tool for resisting the hegemony of West-centric interventions in development, disrupting the assumptions that form the basis of development. This turn to culture offered radical possibilities for decolonizing social change but in response, necolonial development institutions incorporated culture into their strategic framework while simultaneously deploying political and economic power to silence transformative threads. This rise of “culture as development” corresponded with the global rise of neo-liberal governmentality, incorporating culture as a tool for globally reproducing the logic of capital. Using examples of transformative social change interventions, this book emphasizes the role of culture as a site for resisting capitalism and imagining rights-based, sustainable and socialist futures. In particular, it attends to culture as the basis for socialist organizing in activist and party politics. In doing so, Culture, Participation and Social Change offers a framework of inter-linkage between Marxist analyses of capital and cultural analyses of colonialism. It concludes with an anti-colonial framework that re-imagines the academe as a site of activist interventions.

This book proposes a new interdisciplinary approach to the gendered power relations in James's novels. Reading James's narrative form through the lens of relational sociology, specifically Pierre Bourdieu's concept of symbolic domination, reconciles some of the most fiercely disputed positions in James studies of the past decades. The close readings focus on three novels, The Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl, providing a systematic relational analysis into the specifically Jamesian method of narrating the socio-psychological, embodied responses to masculine power and oppression. James persistently narrates his characters as social agents whose perception, affects, and bodily practices are products of the social structures that they in turn continue to shape and reproduce. The chapters trace a development throughout James's career that reflects a growing sensitivity for the concealment and attendant misrecognition of gendered domination.

This book examines and compares the religious experience of an African group with a European one. It offers an ethnographical investigation of the Jukun of north central Nigeria. The author also organically weaves into the narrative the Christianization of the Irish in a comparative fashion. Throughout, he makes the case for an African Christianity connected to a Celtic Irish Christianity and vice-versa -- as different threads in a tapestry. This work is a product of a synthesis of archival research in three continents, interviews with surviving first-generation Christians who were active practitioners of the Jukun indigenous religion, and with former missionaries to the Jukun. On the Irish side, it draws from extant primary sources and interviews with scholars in Celtic Irish studies. In addition, pictures, diagrams, and excerpts from British colonial and missionary journals provide a rich contextual understanding of Jukun religious life and practices. The author is among the emerging voices in the study of World Christianity who advocate for the reality of'poly-centres'for Christianity. This perspective recognizes voices from the Global South in the expansion of Christianity. This book develops a theory of aesthetic fiction's impact on social identities. Throughout five case studies, the author develops the argument that social identities are nurtured by and may even emerge through the conflict between different aesthetic expressions. As it creates affective structures, narrative fiction enables the development and formation of political and cultural identities. This work is part of a field of research that deals with the aesthetics of the everyday and the idea of social aesthetics. It argues for a central role for the arts in the creation and formation of modern society. Social identities emerge in response to aesthetic-sensual patterns of perception.Focusing on five West German public debates in the years 1950 to 1990, this work sheds light upon the transformation of social reality through the discursive adaption of art.

Das Internet hat sich durch seine Verhäuslichung massenhaft verbreitet: Wie verlief der Anschaffungsprozess? Wie haben Paare das Internet in ihren Alltag eingefügt und welche Veränderungen brachten mobile Technologien? Wie haben sich die häuslichen Medienrepertoires und Kommunikationskulturen verändert? Diese und weitere Fragen beantwortet die qualitative Langzeitstudie mit Paarhaushalten. In ethnografisch orientierten Haushaltsstudien wurde ein systematisch zusammengestelltes Sample von 25 Paaren zwischen 2008 und 2016 viermal zu ihrem häuslichen Medienhandeln befragt. Ergänzt werden die Befunde durch eine Untersuchung von 16 Paaren der Online-Avantgarde im Jahr 2016.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this book uncovers the historical trajectory of U.S. independent hip-hop in the post-golden era, seeking to understand its complex relationship to mainstream hip-hop culture and U.S. culture more generally. Christopher Vito analyzes the lyrics of indie hip-hop albums from 2000-2013 to uncover the dominant ideologies of independent artists regarding race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and social change. These analyses inform interviews with members of the indie hip-hop community to explore the meanings that they associate with the culture today, how technological and media changes impact the boundaries between independent and major, and whether and how this shapes their engagement with oppositional consciousness. Ultimately, this book aims to understand the complex and contradictory cultural politics of independent hip-hop in the contemporary age.

Den damit verbundenen anthropologischen und subjektivitätstheoretischen Grundlagen und Funktionen des Erzählens geht die Untersuchung anhand einer systematischen Verschränkung der Philosophischen Anthropologie Helmuth Plessners mit der Erzähltheorie Paul Ricœurs sowie aktuellen literaturtheoretischen Ansätzen nach. Dabei zeigen Analysen zu Menschenbildern in Literaturen der (Post-)Moderne und Gegenwart, dass sich die jeweils vorgenommenen Bestimmungsversuche ebenso wie die wahrgenommenen Unergründlichkeiten auch auf die literarisch reflektierten Formen und Aneignungsweisen des Narrativen auswirken – und schließlich ein exzentrisches Erzählen erzeugen.

This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. The second part focuses on collectivities and movements: communities in the city, critical social movements, maker, online gaming groups and networked groups of young people. The third part moves institutions and organizations into the foreground, discussing the transformation of journalism, religion, politics, and education, whilst the fourth and final part is dedicated to methodologies and perspectives.
