A decade after the War for Kuwait and two decades after the Iran-Iraq War, the wider Gulf region remains mired in internal, regional and international conflicts. Iran, Iraq, and the Arab Gulf States presents analytical perspectives - including solution-oriented assessments to identify major causes for actual and potential conflicts throughout the Gulf. The twenty-six papers assembled in this volume identify trends for the next decade. Studies on Iranian, Iraqi, Saudi and Arab Gulf States'political agendas on the domestic, regional and international fronts are included, along with assessments on pending legal issues, including border disputes, relations among the Gulf states themselves, as well as their complex and evolving ties with several Western powers. The study closes with four'trends'chapters looking at the 2000-2010 period.

Thirteen of the chapters that comprise the contents of this first volume of Native Languages of the A mericas were originally commissioned by the undersigned in his capacity as Editor of the fourteen volume series (1963-1976), Current Trends in Linguistics. All appeared, in 1973, under Part Three of the quadripartite Vol. 10, subtitled Linguistics in North America. Two additional chaplers are being held over for the volume to follow shortly, devoted to Central and South American lan­ guages and linguistics, where they more appropriately belong. A fourteenth chapter, on the'Historiography of native North A merican linguistics,'was written similarly by invitation, for Vol. 13, subtitled Historiography of Linguistics, published in 1975. Both Volumes 10 and 13 were jointly financed by the United States National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities, with an enhancing contribution to the former by the Canada Council. The generosity of these funding agencies was, of course, previously acknowledged in my respective Editor's Introductions to the two books mentioned, but cannot be repeated too often: without their welcome and timely assistance, the global project could scarcely have been realized on so comprehensive a scale. The Current Trends in Linguistics series was a long-term venture of Mouton Publishers, of The Hague, under the imaginative in-house direction of Peter de Rid­ der. Various spin-offs were foreseen, and some of them happily realized.

This book provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of the topic of culture in the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and a structured overview of a large body of HCI research on (and with) culture. The book presents a short and guided overview of the concept of culture. It offers some background on the origin and development of the term culture. It also outlines some of its key traits and ingredients and summarizes three main perspectives of culture across disciplines. The book argues that culture matters considerably in HCI and discusses a number of reasons for and against its relevance. Arguments against include a lack of a universal or common definition of the term culture and globalization. Arguments in favor touch upon important aspects of HCI, including a diversely growing user base, the need to provide designers with enough support to design across cultures, and the inseparable relationship between culture and technology. The issues explored in this book can be classified into three, non-mutually exclusive, categories: theoretical, practical, and controversial. The book outlines the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI, including Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, Edward T. Hall's cross-cultural theory of communication, and Richard Nisbett's cultural cognitive systems of thought as well as examining the ways in which culture has been operationalized in HCI research and the main functions of culture in this area. It closes with a discussion of some open issues intended to spark debate and future research. The literature this book draws upon covers a wide range of research disciplines, including Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Robotics, Disability Studies, Cultural and Cross-Cultural Psychology, Usability, and Design. This book aspires to provide a useful overview of culture for HCI scholars at all levels.

Cities are synonymous with the production and consumption of culture. It is their material and human cultural infrastructure that also makes them archives and works of art. The Cultural Infrastructure of Cities critically re-examines the relationship between the urban and its cultures. It expands our understanding of the concept of urban cultural infrastructure and highlights the foundational role of culture to the materiality and sociality of urban life and the governance of cities. The book begins with a theoretical overview of the cultural and infrastructural turns in urban studies scholarship. It then explores definitions of cultural infrastructure and its “hard” and “soft” dimensions before critically considering the vulnerabilities generated in the cultural sector by the Covid-19 pandemic. Chapters are organised in four thematic sections focusing on aspects of producing, performing, consuming and collecting culture, which feature detailed case studies from 17 cities across the global North and South. This book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of urban studies, but also to policy-makers planning and creating cultural infrastructures as well as those working in cultural institutions and creative industries.

Alles ist und bedeutet gleichzeitig, ereignet, affiziert, transformiert sich: Wissen kompostiert Welt kompostiert Wissen. Kompost unterläuft Trennungen von Ästhetik, Ethik, Epistemologie und Ontologie, wie sie für das westliche Denken charakteristisch sind. Ausschließung, Einschließung, Gewalt, race, class, gender müssen kompostiert werden, müssen ver/antwortet, gehalten, anders gedacht und anders erzählt, Privilegien zersetzt und verlernt werden. Hierbei nehmen radikal nichtbinäre, pluriversale, relationale, queerfeministische Ökologien onto-epistemologische Gestalt an, die Relationalitäten, Responseabilities und Sorge sowie RaumZeiten und Materien/Materialisierungen verschränkt mit-denken, gerade ohne über sie zu verfügen.

Postkoloniale Ansätze in der Ethnologie zeichnen sich durch eine kritische Reflexion der eigenen Wissenschaftsgeschichte aus und denken dabei theoretische und methodologische Ansätze des Faches weiter. Sie laden dazu ein, sich kritisch mit der Verstrickung der Disziplin in koloniale Prozesse und der Aufrechterhaltung von ungleichen Machtstrukturen auseinanderzusetzen. This thoughtful and wide-ranging open access volume explores the forces and issues shaping and defining contemporary identities and everyday life in Brunei Darussalam. It is a subject that until now has received comparatively limited attention from mainstream social scientists working on Southeast Asian societies. The volume helps remedy that deficit by detailing the ways in which religion, gender, place, ethnicity, nation-state formation, migration and economic activity work their way into and reflect in the lives of ordinary Bruneians. In a first of its kind, all the lead authors of the chapter contributions are local Bruneian scholars, and the editors skilfully bring the study of Brunei into the fold of the sociology of everyday life from multiple disciplinary directions. By engaging local scholars to document everyday concerns that matter to them, the volume presents a collage of distinct but interrelated case studies that have been previously undocumented or relatively underappreciated. Dieser Open-Access-Sammelband hinterfragt, wie sich internationale Kulturzusammenarbeit zwischen Ländern unterschiedlicher Kultursysteme und -traditionen erreichen lässt. In Deutschland ist Auswärtige Kulturpolitik von dem Gedanken geleitet, dass globale Herausforderungen Multilateralismus erfordern. Im chinesischen Diskurs dagegen finden andere Kernbegriffe wie z.B. „Tianxia“ Verwendung, die im nicht-chinesischen Kontext einer Interpretation bedürfen. Um der Differenz – aber auch den Gemeinsamkeiten – auf den Grund zu gehen, untersuchen Wissenschaftler•innen und Praktiker•innen aus China und Deutschland Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungen sowie Kooperationen in kulturellen Begegnungen. Auf diese Weise sollen Grundlagen für ein besseres gegenseitiges Verständnis sowie für kulturelle Kooperation zwischen beiden Ländern ermöglicht werden.

In diesem Buch wird das Verständnis von Interkulturalität und interkultureller Kompetenz bei einem Automobilkonzern erforscht. Dafür wurden Experteninterviews mit Führungskräften des gehobenen Managements durchgeführt. Die Interviews wurden mit der Qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Udo Kuckartz und der Objektiven Hermeneutik nach Ulrich Oevermann ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden qualitativ-empirischen Studie zeigen, dass Interkulturalität und interkulturelle Kompetenz innerhalb des Organisationskontextes vom Führungspersonal unterschiedlich ausgelegt und gehandhabt werden. Aus dem empirischen Material wird in Fallanalysen und -vergleichen eine qualitative Typologie mit vier kulturbezogenen Grundorientierungen herausgearbeitet.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sind in der einen oder anderen Weise von zwei Begriffen aus dem Arsenal der soziologischen Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns und speziell seiner Organisationssoziologie inspiriert: dem Begriff der Grenzstelle und dem Begriff des Grenzsystems. Mit dem Begriff der Grenzstelle werden Abgesandte von Organisationen bezeichnet, die im Dienste von deren Zwecken und Bestandsinteressen auf eine relevante Gruppe von Nichtmitgliedern einwirken sollen, also etwa als Verkäufer auf Kunden oder als Pressesprecher auf Journalisten, und Grenzsysteme sind die aus diesem Anlass gebildeten Interaktionen, also etwa das Verkaufsgespräch oder die Pressekonferenz. Die Aufsätze behandeln unter anderem die Grenzstellen des Gesprächsleiters in der polizeilichen Vernehmung, des Diplomaten, des Verkäufers in seiner Nebenrolle als Aggressionsobjekt wütender Kunden, und zu den behandelten Grenzsystemen gehören Interaktionen wie Wohnungsbesichtigung und Vernehmung, Rettungseinsatz und Gerichtsverfahren.

Focusing on the ancient, medieval, and early-modern eras, this collection considers the beginnings of Sino-Japanese Relations in the Ancient East Asian World, focusing on changes of the East Asian international system. It examines the establishment of the East Asian International Order in the 7th Century and the advance of Sino- Japanese relations in medieval times. It also considers the impact of initial contact with modern Western powers on modernization, and examines the points of rupture which deeply affected both cultures, for China the Opium War, and for Japan it the Black Ships of Commodore Matthew Perry and the Meiji Restoration. Based on research conducted jointly by Chinese and Japanese scholars, this collection provides a unique insight into the development of Chinese and Japanese culture from comparative perspectives, offering an in-depth study of the countries'political, religious and societal structures to deepen objective perception toward history and promote mutual understanding in East Asia.

This book examines an emergent pattern of international student mobility: that of international students from across the African continent who are enrolled on degree programmes at Chinese universities. China is among the most popular destination countries for African students, yet there has been little research to-date into this emergent mobility pattern. Drawing on data from a series of interviews, the book focuses on the specific modalities of integration into the global economy of both the sending region and the host country, and examines how these shape the decision-making, experiences, and future aspirations of mobile students. It also highlights how incipient flows of international student migrants, such as those between various African countries and China, are calling into question a number of the axioms around the study of international study mobility that were developed with reference to more established migration patterns, which tend to flow from other regions to the West. These include, for example, the idea that international students are generally privileged members of the global middle class who seek an education abroad as part of a strategy to accumulate cultural capital and reproduce social privilege. This novel work is of interest to researchers in human geography, sociology, development studies, migration studies, and particularly those studying China-Africa relations.

Caribbean countries have had to navigate multiple crises, which have tested their collective resolve through time. In this regard, the region's landscape has been shaped by an interplay of vulnerability and resilience which has brought to the fore possibilities and contradictions. It is within this context that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic must be considered. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on COVID-19 and the Caribbean, Volume 2: Society, Education and Human Behaviour provides a comprehensive, multi- and interdisciplinary assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Caribbean as the site of enquiry. The edited collection mobilises critical perspectives brought to bear on research produced within and beyond the boundaries and boundedness of conventional academic disciplinary divides, in response to the multi-dimensional crises of our time. This Palgrave Pivot strives to recount and understand Indigenous Law, as set within a remote community in northern Australia. It pays close attention to the realpolitik and high-level political functioning of Indigenous Laws, which inspires a discussion of how this Law models the relational, influences governance and emplaces people in an ordered kincentric lifeworld. The book argues that Indigenous Law can be examined for the ways in which it is a deliberate, stabilizing and powerful force to maintain communal order in relation to Country, a counter framing to popular and ‘soft law or soft power asset'visions of such Laws often held in the national and international imaginary. It is the latter which too often renders this knowledge esoteric and relinquishes it to a category of lore or folklore. This is an open access book.

This open-access essay collection brings together a range of viewpoints on gender from a diverse group of international scholars based in Finland, Belgium, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. The focus is, in particular, on gender performativity and non-binary or non-normative gender. The essays examine the ways in which gender can be depicted, perceived, and understood in Japanese popular culture. The work will be of interest to scholars working in gender studies, Asian studies, and popular culture. This book proposes new design and development models for local cultural and creative products, intended to improve the quality of these products and to preserve or enhance their local economic benefits. Building a knowledge base of design symbols and information gleaned from local history can be used to simplify the process of creative product design and increase the efficiency of product development. This book proposes a method for grasping the essential elements of symbols and culture so as to accelerate product development and capture the essence of culture in product design. In addition, it demonstrates that exhibitions applying scenario-oriented design can not only strengthen the representation of local culture, history and stories, but also support product consumption. As a result, the book offers a valuable asset for boosting the efficiency of creative product design and promoting the consumption of creative cultural products.

The majority of studies on the quality of life have been conducted in Western contexts and are based on Western participants. Comparatively speaking, there are only a few studies that have been conducted in different Chinese contexts. Also, there are fewer QOL studies based on children and adolescents, or studies that examine the relationship between QOL and economic disadvantage. In addition, more research is needed to address the methodological issues related to the assessment of quality of life. This volume is a constructive response to the challenges described above. It is the first book to cover research in Chinese, Western and global contexts in a single volume. It is a ground-breaking volume in which Chinese studies on the quality of life are collected. The book includes papers addressing family QOL, quality of life in adolescents experiencing economic disadvantage, and methodological issues in the assessment of QOL. It is written by researchers working in a variety of disciplines.

Der Einfluss von Norbert Elias als soziologischer Klassiker ist unbestritten. Dieser Status verdankt sich in erster Linie seiner Theorie vom Zivilisationsprozess. In dessen Geist steht auch Elias‘ 1982 erschienenes und in mehrere Sprachen übersetztes Buch Über die Einsamkeit der Sterbenden in unseren Tagen. Dort widmet er sich der Frage, wie Menschen der Endlichkeit des Lebens gegenüberstehen, unter welchen Bedingungen sie sterben, sich voneinander verabschieden, umeinander trauern und sich aneinander erinnern. Im Zentrum steht die Einsicht, dass es immerzu die Lebenden sind, die das Sterblichkeitsproblem zu bewältigen haben. Menschen in zivilisierten Gesellschaften tun dies Elias zufolge, indem sie Sterben und Tod verdrängen. Als schambesetztes Thema werde das Lebensende in alltäglichen Gesprächssituationen zumeist ausgeblendet; ferner haben sich Sterbeprozesse im Zuge sozialer Ausdifferenzierung vom heimischen Familienumfeld in Institutionen wie das Krankenhaus verlagert. Diese Entwicklung führe dazu, dass heute anders gestorben werde als früher: steril, geräuschlos, unauffällig – und vor allem einsam. Für die thanatosoziologische Erforschung des Umgangs mit Sterben, Tod und Trauer erwies sich Elias‘ Studie als Meilenstein. Kein anderes deutschsprachiges Buch dürfte in diesem Zusammenhang häufiger zitiert worden sein. Was jedoch fehlt, ist eine systematische Überprüfung der empirischen Aktualität seiner Thesen. Dieses Desiderat bildet den Ansatzpunkt für die vorliegende Untersuchung. Ausgehend von originären qualitativen Forschungen werden zentrale Aspekte der Elias'schen Perspektive aufgegriffen und auf ihre Anschlussfähigkeit hin analysiert. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, was der soziale Wandel der vergangenen Jahrzehnte für die heutige Situation der Sterbenden bedeutet.

This book delves into a critical and comprehensive analysis of Mtukudzi's legacy, as an outstanding musician who anchored his music on cultural identity specifically through the artistic manipulation of language. As a cultural worker, his remit extended beyond performance. This raised his stature to the levels of such African music icons as Fela Kuti of Nigeria, Salif Keita of Mali and Miriam Makeba/Hugh Masekela of South Africa, all towering giants in African musical performance. This volume examines how Mtukudzi artistically manipulated language to convey a timeless message of cultural identity, fighting for the respect of rights for women, children and all. It unpacks how Mtukudzi subtly uses language to put across political views that speak truth to power, harnessing Zimbabwean language to articulate and promote the nation's cultural heritage and to advocate for societal development and the promotion of rights of vulnerable groups.The chapters in this volume are a mix of interdisciplinary Zimbabwean scholars of linguistics, performance studies, religion, history, communication and media studies, unravelling Mtukudzi as a fighter for human rights and justice who subtly critiqued political systems and practices. It concludes that Mtukudzi strove to be a cultural worker who used the power of language through music to contribute towards the rehabilitation of a battered African identity.​

Jahrhunderts über Weiterentwicklungen in den 1960er Jahren, entscheidende Weichenstellungen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren bis hin zu ihrer gegenwärtigen Vielgestaltigkeit nachzuzeichnen.

The purpose of the book is to elaborate a planning theory which departs from the plethora of theories which reflect the conditions of developed countries of the North-West. The empirical material of this effort is derived from a country, Greece, which sits on the edge between North-West and South-East, at the corner of Europe. No doubt, there is extensive international literature on planning theory in general from a bewildering variety of viewpoints. The interested professional or student of urban and regional planning is certainly aware of the dizzying flood of books, articles and research reports on planning theory and of their never-ending borrowing of obscure concepts from more respectable scientific disciplines, from mathematics to philosophy and from physics to economics, human geography and sociology. He or she probably observed that there is a growing interest in theoretical approaches from the viewpoint of the so-called “Global South”. The author of the present book has for many decades faced the impasse of attempting to transplant theories founded on the experience of the North-West to countries with a totally different historical, political, social and geographical background. He learned that the reality that planners face is unpredictable, patchy, and responsive to social processes, frequently of a very pedestrian nature. Planning strives to deal with private interests which planners are keen to envelop in a single “public interest”, which is extremely hard to define. The behaviour of the average citizen, far from being that of the neoclassical model of the homo economicus, is that of an individual, a kind of homo individualis, who interacts with the state and the public administration within a complex web of mutual dependence and negotiation. The state and its administrative apparatus, i.e., the key-determinants and fixers of urban and regional planning policy, bargain with this individual, offer inducements, exemptions, derogations and privileges, deviate unhesitatingly from their grand policy pronouncements, but still defend the rationality and comprehensiveness of the planning system they have legislated and operationalized. It is by and large a successful modus vivendi, but only thanks to a constant practice of compromise. Hence, the term compromise planning, which the author coined as an alternative to all the existing theoretical forms of planning. This is the sort of planning, and of the accompanying theory, with which he deals in this book. It is the outcome of experience and knowledge accumulated in a long personal journey of academic teaching in England and Greece, research, and professional involvement.

In 1962 Norbert Elias was invited as a temporary professor at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. He taught, employed fieldwork, travelled, and met many people in postcolonial Africa. When Elias left Ghana in 1964, he had laid the basic groundwork for a fundamental sociological argument on human societies.The volume on hand is a selection of his unpublished writings based on these experiences. Together they touch upon not only the well-known criticism of Eurocentrism and a developmental perspective but also what could be considered the core of Elias's work: the concept of civilisation. In a foreword, Dieter Reicher and Adrian Jitschin have endeavoured to explain and break down the relations of Elias's African experience to the rest of his work and biography. They also clarified some misleading interpretations of Elias's time in Africa. Finally, Arjan Post has uncovered the previously unknown fascinating story of Elias'encounter with Malcolm X in an epilogue.

This book explores the role of national theatres, national cultural centres, cultural policy, festivals, and the film industry as creative and cultural performances hubs for exercising soft power and cultural diplomacy. It shows how can existing cultural and non-cultural infrastructures, sometimes referred to as the Orange Economy, open opportunities for diplomacy and soft power; ways by which cultural performance and creative practice can be re-centered in post-colonial Africa and in post-global pandemic era; and existing structures that cultural performers, diplomats, administrators, cultural entrepreneurs, and managers can leverage to re-enact cultural performance and creative practice on the continent. This volume is positioned within postcolonial discourse to amplify narratives, experiences and realities that are anti-oppressive especially within critical discourse.

Undarstellbaren ist eine bisher wenig beachtete Eigenschaft und häufig Gegenstand einer speziellen Kunst, die sich im Kontext des ostasiatischen Zen-Buddhismus entwickelt hat. Der sich in diesen Werken manifestierende, scheinbare Widerspruch einer zen-buddhistischen Geisteshaltung, die Wirklichkeit für nicht (oder zumindest nicht hinlänglich) vermittelbar zu halten, dieses Unvermittelbare aber gerade im Vermittelbaren zu suchen, markiert den Ausgangspunkt der Strategien von Sichtbarmachungspraktiken, die im vorliegenden Buch erstmalig einer genaueren Bestimmung unterzogen werden.

How does culture affect action? This question has long been framed in terms of a means vs ends debate—in other words, do cultural ends or cultural means play a primary causal role in human behavior? However, the role of socialization has been largely overlooked in this debate. In this book, Vila-Henninger develops a model of how culture affects action called “The Sociological Dual-Process Model of Outcomes” that incorporates socialization. This book contributes to the debate by first providing a critical overview of the literature that explains the limitations of the sociological dual-process model and subsequent scholarship—and especially work in sociology on “schemas”. It then develops a sociological dual-process model of moral judgment that formally explains Type I processes, Type II processes, and the interaction between Type I and Type II processes. The book also expands sociological dual-process models to include a temporal dimension—the'Sociological Dual-Process Model of Outcomes'. Finally, the book integrates a theory of socialization into the sociological dual-process model and creates empirical indicators that confirm Vila-Henninger's theorization and contribute to the literature on measures of dual-process models.

Die Studie von Alexandra Bernhardt beschäftigt sich mit Coworking Spaces und ihren Atmosphären. Neben einer umfassenden Betrachtung der Rolle von Atmosphären wird die besondere Bedeutung von Gemeinschaft im Kontext dieser Arbeitsräume näher beleuchtet. Den Kern der Untersuchung bilden zwei Fallstudien in urbanen Coworking Spaces, wobei ein an der Ethnografie orientiertes, methodenplurales qualitatives Forschungsdesign verfolgt wird. Im Rahmen der Analyse wird zum einen betrachtet, was Coworking im Alltag und damit die neue Gemeinschaftlichkeit bei der Arbeit ausmacht: Dabei werden relevante Praktiken und Rituale, räumliche Arrangements und Atmosphären in ihrer Komposition herausgearbeitet. Zum anderen rücken die Coworkenden, ihr Raumhandeln und damit verbundene Haltungen näher in den Blick: Es wird aufgezeigt, wie sich die Nutzer•innen Coworking Spaces als Arbeits- und Gemeinschaftsräume erschließen und welche Rolle Atmosphären spielen. Zudem werden soziale Gebilde herausgestellt, die von den Coworkenden in Bezug auf ihren Coworking Space aufgegriffen werden und die den Coworking-Space-Alltag mitprägen. Auch werden Spannungen aufgedeckt, die aus einem Nebeneinander von Gemeinschafts- und Dienstleistungslogik entstehen, und der Umgang damit näher betrachtet.

Empirisch geht mit dieser Neuausrichtung eine Erforschung des Alltagsnahen und Lebensweltlichen, des impliziten Wissens, der sozio-materiellen Arrangements und der Ästhetisierungen des Alterns einher. Der Band bildet die Vervielfältigung und Synthese von disziplinären Perspektiven der Kulturgerontologie im deutschsprachigen Raum ab und zeigt damit neue Wege auf, die Lebensphase Alter zu gestalten.

Geld ist heute ein sachlich, zeitlich und sozial ubiquitäres Phänomen. Es fällt schwer – trotz sich verstetigender Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrisen in der jüngeren Vergangenheit –, sich Geld wegzudenken oder sich auch nur ein anderes Geld(-system) zu denken. Diese Ubiquität steht im Kontrast zu einer hochgradig selektiven wissenschaftlichen Behandlung, die es verunmöglicht, den kultur-evolutionären Stellenwert des Geldes adäquat abzuschätzen. Die neoklassische Ökonomik ist durch eine (seit Adam Smith kolportierte) tauschtheoretische Engführung von Geld limitiert. Geld gilt dort strukturell als auch verteilungspolitisch weithin als neutral, also nicht als evolutionärer Mechanismus aus eigenem Recht. Die Neue Wirtschaftssoziologie hat zwar zu Recht den Modellplatonismus der Mainstream-Ökonomik kritisiert und auf die soziale Einbettung der Wirtschaft hingewiesen. Sie hat es in diesem Zuge aber nicht zu einer eigenständigen Geldtheorie gebracht. Das Buch präsentiert Überlegungen zu einer interdisziplinär informierten soziologischen Geldtheorie in kultur-evolutionärer Absicht. In zwei historischen Studien (zu Mesopotamien ab dem vierten Jahrtausend v.u.Z. sowie zum Griechenland des ersten Jahrtausends v.u.Z.) werden die koevolutionären Prozesse von Geldentwicklung, Schriftentwicklung und Rationalitätsentwicklung detailliert rekonstruiert. Einer solchen Forschungsperspektive gelingt es, die in der Soziologie etablierte problematische Dichotomie von Einbettungs- und Ausdifferenzierungsparadigmen durch eine integrative Perspektive zu überwinden und aufzuheben.

This volume presents the preliminary results of the work carried out by the interdisciplinary cultural techniques research lab at the University of Erfurt. Taking up an impulse from media studies, its contributions examine —from a variety of disciplinary perspectives—the interplay between the formative processes of knowledge and action outlined within the conceptual framework of cultural techniques. Case studies in the fields of history, literary (and media) studies, and the history of science reconstruct seemingly fundamental demarcations such as nature and culture, the human and the nonhuman, and materiality and the symbolical order as the result of concrete practices and operations. These studies reveal that particularly basic operations of spatialization form the very conditions that determine emergence within any cultural order. Ranging from manual and philological'paper work'to practices of opening up and closing off spaces and collective techniques of assembly, these case studies replace the grand narratives of cultural history focusing on micrological examinations of specific constellations between human and nonhuman actors.

Anna Jędrzejczyk untersucht Strategien zur Realisierung eines kohärenten internationalen Handlungsprogramms, das nicht nur auf die Gestaltung des Images eines Unternehmens als attraktiver Arbeitgeber abzielt, sondern auch auf das Motivieren potenzieller Bewerber, sich um eine freie Stelle in Unternehmen zu bewerben. Als Instrumente des Employer Brandings analysiert die Autorin Stellenangebote global handelnder amerikanischer Konzerne, die von 2015 bis 2016 eine Niederlassung in Polen und in Deutschland hatten. Sie vergleicht diese mit Stellenangeboten lokal handelnder polnischer und deutscher Unternehmen, um die länderspezifischen Unterschiede auf der Makro- und Mikroebene zu identifizieren. Die Autorin fokussiert sich zunächst auf Schlüsselwörter, die im Rahmen des Konzepts /passion at work/ pragmalinguistisch analysiert werden. Um deren Auswirkung auf die potenziellen Bewerber zu untersuchen, wurden polnische und deutsche Studenten nach der Interpretation der in den Stellenangeboten markierten Schlüsselwörter gefragt.

Anna M. Steinkamp erklärt aus vergleichender, ressourcenorientierter Perspektive die Zusammenhänge zwischen einer erfolgreichen Internationalisierungsstrategie eigenständiger Produktionsunternehmen aus der deutsch-polnischen Grenzregion und persönlichen Merkmalen der Entscheidungsträger. Die Autorin zeigt, wie die frühere Auslandserfahrung der Geschäftsführer eine spätere erste Internationalisierungsstrategie des Unternehmens beeinflusst und wie die Fremdsprachenkenntnisse der Entscheidungsträger auf die Art der Internationalisierungsstrategie und auf das Größenverhältnis der Auslandsumsätze zu den Gesamtumsätzen wirken. Darüber hinaus erörtert sie, welche Rolle die Nähe des Hauptsitzes des Unternehmens zur deutsch-polnischen Grenze für globale Geschäfte spielt.

Das Buch hinterfragt, inwiefern sich die ethnisch durchmischte Zusammensetzung der brasilianischen Gesellschaft in den aus der Theorie bekannten Dualismus von Multikulturalismus und Transkulturalität einordnen lässt. Der brasilianische Begriff der mestiçagem – übersetzt mit Rassenmischung – wird also in diesem zeitgenössischen Kontext kulturbezogener Forschung neu vermessen. Zoltan Peter und Ina Wilczewska untersuchen in ihrer empirischen Studie 1000 Jugendliche quantitativ und qualitativ in Hinblick auf ihre Offenheit und Toleranz. Befragt werden Jugendliche, die in einem Drittstaat geboren wurden und in Österreich leben. 80% der befragten Jugendlichen zeigen sich als proeuropäisch eingestellt, 60 Prozent sind es in besonders starkem Ausmaß. Bei 20-30% besteht hingegen leichter bis stärkerer Nachhol- und Unterstützungsbedarf. Ihnen mangelt es an Offenheit gegenüber liberalen Werten und Grundrechten. Sie neigen beträchtlich zu Vorurteilen, 5% erweisen sich – besonders in Religionsfragen – als sehr intolerant. Im Kern zeigt die Studie, dass der Anteil der jungen eingewanderten Bevölkerung, der demokratiefeindliche Einstellungen erkennen lässt, bei weitem nicht so hoch ist, wie die öffentliche Meinung vermuten lassen würde.

This book examines and compares the religious experience of an African group with a European one. It offers an ethnographical investigation of the Jukun of north central Nigeria. The author also organically weaves into the narrative the Christianization of the Irish in a comparative fashion. Throughout, he makes the case for an African Christianity connected to a Celtic Irish Christianity and vice-versa -- as different threads in a tapestry. This work is a product of a synthesis of archival research in three continents, interviews with surviving first-generation Christians who were active practitioners of the Jukun indigenous religion, and with former missionaries to the Jukun. On the Irish side, it draws from extant primary sources and interviews with scholars in Celtic Irish studies. In addition, pictures, diagrams, and excerpts from British colonial and missionary journals provide a rich contextual understanding of Jukun religious life and practices. The author is among the emerging voices in the study of World Christianity who advocate for the reality of'poly-centres'for Christianity. This perspective recognizes voices from the Global South in the expansion of Christianity. This book serves as a valuable resource for historians, anthropologists, theologians, and those interested in missions studies, both scholars and lay readers seeking to deepen their understanding of World Christianity.
