Perspectives and research on play for children with disabilities. Collected Papers. This book includes eight chapters reflecting various approaches towards the theme of play for children with disabilities that characterised the work of the members of the COST Action TD1309 “LUDI–Play for Children with Disabilities”: barriers and facilitators to play, guidelines on accessibility and usability of toys and technologies, literature reviews and parents'and studies on educators'perspectives on play are presented. Alongside these multifaceted points of view, some theoretical aspects emerged as a common background: the ICF-CY theoretical perspective, the vision of “play for the sake of play” and play as a fundamental right. Throughout the history of early Mesopotamia the distribution of cuts of meat – usually in the context of what Michael Dietler (2001) has termed ‘diacritical'feasts – was the primary mechanism for building solidarity among the elite, while at the same time differentiating and calibrating the status of individual office-holders and the institutional roles that they inhabited. This phenomenon has been identified and described in much later periods of Mesopotamian history, as in Milano's path-breaking paper “Aspects of meat consumption in Mesopotamia and the food paradigm of the Poor Man of Nippur” (1998), but up to now has not been identified in the Late Uruk period (ca. 3300-3000 BCE), the earliest period of Mesopotamian history for which we have a substantial documentary record. This brief contribution summarizes the findings presented in a much lengthier paper (Johnson 2015) and is drawn in part from a forthcoming summary of the Late Uruk butchering records (Johnson forthcoming).

Canadian Official Publications focuses on the various types of publications issued by the parliament, departments, and agencies of the federal government of Canada, including information contained in other documents. University of Utah Anthropological Papers No. 135 This volume is dedicated to studies of plainwares—the undecorated ceramics that make up the majority of prehistoric ceramic assemblages worldwide. Early analyses of ceramics focused on changes in decorative design elements to establish chronologies and cultural associations. With the development of archaeometric techniques that allow direct dating of potsherds and identification of their elemental composition and residues, plainwares now provide a new source of information about the timing, manufacture, distribution, and use of ceramics. This book investigates plainwares from the far west, stretching into the Great Basin and the northwestern and southwestern edges of Arizona. Contributors use and explain recent analytical methods, including neutron activation, electron microprobe analysis, and thin-section optical mineralogy. They examine native ceramic traditions and how they were influenced by the Spanish mission system, and they consider the pros and cons of past approaches to ware typology, presenting a vision of how plainware analysis can be improved by ignoring the traditional “typological” approach of early ceramicists working with decorated wares. This work provides a much-needed update to plainware studies, with new hypotheses and data that will help set the stage for future research.

From the early Cold War years through the social unrest and activism of the 1960s, American anthropology expanded considerably in size and outreach, becoming spectacularly global and cross-cultural in its interests. Complex societies and communities became increasingly popular subjects of inquiry; the influence of sociological methods upon fieldwork and interpretation grew; a reimagined cultural evolution emerged; and a pervasive interest in the broader forces of culture change shaped research, writing, and theory throughout the quarter century. A dynamic range of schools of anthropological thought flowered—cultural ecology, structural-functionalism, ethnoscience, and, in the last years of the era, French structuralism. The American Anthropological Association became a forum of political debate in the 1960s, and its membership included more people of color but fewer women than previously. The twenty-two selections in this volume highlight the many telling achievements and enduring insights in American anthropology during the first few decades after World War II. An introduction to these essays by Robert F. Murphy provides a historical and critical backdrop for understanding the changes and continuity in American anthropology during this time.

American anthropology in the late twentieth century interrogated and depicted the worlds of others, past and present, in subtle and incisive ways while increasingly questioning its own authority to do so. Marxist, symbolic, and structuralist thought shaped the fieldwork and conclusions of many researchers around the globe. Practicing anthropology blossomed and grew rapidly as a subdiscipline in its own right. There emerged a keener appreciation of both the history of the discipline and the histories of those studied. Archaeologists witnessed a resurgence of interest in the concept of culture. The American Anthropologist also made systematic efforts to represent the field as a whole, with biological anthropology and linguistics particularly adept at crossing subdiscipline boundaries. Proliferation of specialized areas within sociocultural anthropology encouraged work across the subdisciplines. The thirty selections in this volume reflect the notable trends and accomplishments in American anthropology during the closing decades of the millennium. An introduction by Regna Darnell offers a historical background and critical context that enable readers to better understand the changes and continuity in American anthropology during this time.

The formative years of American anthropology were characterized by intellectual energy and excitement, the identification of key interpretive issues, and the beginnings of a prodigious amount of fieldwork and recording. The American Anthropological Association (AAA) was born as anthropology emerged as a formal discipline with specialized subfields; fieldwork among Native communities proliferated across North America, yielding a wealth of ethnographic information that began to surface in the flagship journal, the American Anthropologist; and researchers increasingly debated and probed deeper into the roots and significance of ritual, myth, language, social organization, and the physical make-up and prehistory of Native Americans. The fifty-five selections in this volume represent the interests of and accomplishments in American anthropology from the establishment of the American Anthropologist through World War I. The articles in their entirety showcase the state of the subfields of anthropology—archaeology, linguistics, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology—as they were imagined and practiced at the dawn of the twentieth century. Examples of important ethnographic accounts and interpretive debates are also included. Introducing this collection is a historical overview of the beginnings of American anthropology by A. Irving Hallowell, a former president of the AAA.

From the 1920s through the end of World War II, American anthropology grew in complexity while its scope became increasingly global and contemporary. Much insightful and innovative work continued to be produced by scholars working with Native American and First Nation communities, but the significant contributions of those conducting research abroad soon became hard to ignore. The nature of culture and acculturation were scrutinized and theorized about repeatedly; the relationship between culture and personality became an important subject of inquiry; particular historical reconstructions were joined by more synchronic studies of cultures; and more anthropologists gave attention to current events and to unraveling the intricacies of modern culture. The discipline as a whole moved away from affiliations with museums and instead cast itself as a social science within the academy; at the same time, government sponsorship of anthropological research increased markedly through New Deal initiatives and wartime programs of the 1940s. The thirty-nine selections in this volume represent the increasingly diverse areas of research and range of lasting accomplishments in American anthropology during the interwar period. Introducing these essays is a historical overview of American anthropology during this era by George W. Stocking Jr.

This dress, which takes on a symbolic significance in special occasions and rites of passages of aristocratic life (marriage, death, birth), was used to affirm the gender identity acknowledged by the community. Women enhanced their beauty by wearing precious jewellery and garments enriched by the application of decorative glass and amber beads, pendants and metal plaques, studs and buttons, but these accoutrements also underlined their wealth and social status. Women's elaborate adornment may have been thought to provide some protective measures, and visually communicated a sign of fertility and displayed their aesthetics and/or sexual value. She herself is an agalma and with her dowry a valuable resource for the oikos. In addition, this paper will contextualise the use of specific clothes in the wider gentilician ceremonial world, by taking the textiles and female ornaments in question, as part of a larger program made up of figurative ornaments, but also sounds, smells, food and words that we can only imagine.

Experience of archaeology, storytelling and historical re-enactment are the latest trends. Experts and non-expert enthusiasts are often involved in experimental activities as well as in experience of archaeology and re-enacting. Treating these very different aspects of archaeology in the same way is creating confusion. My paper aims to contribute to this discussion. This paper presents the experience of re-enactments and storytelling that were developed during 2014-2016 at the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, Rome, as well the as activities that formed part of an experimental archaeology approach that were conducted during research into Etruscan textile tools. I will first outline the experiences of archaeology as a means to disseminate and communicate knowledge. The events recently organised at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome will be used as examples. The second part will be dedicated to the recent practical experiments carried out at La Sapienza University of Rome in collaboration with the Villa Giulia Museum to understand the function of some pre-Etruscan and Etruscan textile tools (10th-5th centuries BC). The focus will be on the theoretical approaches we adopted.

Between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 12th centuries BC the Mycenaean polities centered on the palatine socio-economic and socio-political structures came to an end. Whatever the causes of this general collapse, different outcomes can be observed. In this paper the discussion is focused on two specific regions of the Mycenaean world, Argolid and Achaea, which especially in the last decades offered a very rich set of archaeological data. Both in Argolid, where in the case of Tiryns it is possible to observe a long-lasting continuity of life after the destruction of the palace in the upper citadel, and in Achaea archaeological sources suggest the presence of socio-political structures able to manage the new socio-economic scenario. The military character of these post-palatial elites is clear in Achaea; but also at Tiryns – where the memory of the recent palatial past was stronger – the importance of warfare activities for the emerging elites is highlighted in significant ceremonial contexts, such as the rituals linked to the deposition of the Tiryns treasure. | Tra la fine del XIII e l'inizio del XII secolo a.C. le strutture socio-economiche e socio-politiche palatine micenee conobbero un periodo di profonda crisi. Al di là delle cause, probabilmente molteplici e concomitanti, di questo vero e proprio collasso generalizzato, se ne possono riscontrare esiti differenti nelle diverse regioni. In questo lavoro sono prese in esame due regioni specifiche del mondo miceneo, l'Argolide e l'Acaia, che soprattutto negli ultimi anni hanno prodotto un ricco repertorio di dati archeologici relativi a questo periodo. Fatti salvi i caratteri propri delle due zone, sia in Argolide – dove nel caso di Tirinto è possibile riscontrare un lungo periodo di continuità di vita dopo la distruzione del palazzo – che in Acaia, le fonti archeologiche suggeriscono l'esistenza di strutture socio-politiche in grado di gestire un nuovo scenario socio-economico. Il carattere militare delle élites post-palaziali è evidente in Acaia, ma anche a Tirinto – dove la memoria del recente passato palaziale era più marcata – l'importanza delle attività belliche per i nuovi ceti dominanti, e dei ruoli connessi, viene sottolineata in contesti cerimoniali particolarmente significativi come la deposizione del cosiddetto tesoro di Tirinto.

This paper explores aspects of inequality in Mesopotamia during the 4th millennium BC. This millennium was the era of early cities, which were accompanied by expanded hierarchies of power, new social identities, and innovative modes of working and labour management. Selected types of material culture–statues, amulets, eye idols, clay cone mosaics and bevelled-rim bowls– are explored. Their frequency, quality, raw materials, production and use contexts have a range of implications with regard to the status of their producers and their accessibility to users. Their varied accessibility in particular is illustrative of inequalities and inequities in Late Uruk/Late Chalcolithic Period Mesopotamia. In identifying past inequities in particular, it may be useful to think of ‘attached objects'rather than ‘attached specialists'. | Il presente articolo intende esplorare alcuni aspetti dell'ineguaglianza in Mesopotamia nel corso del IV millennio a.C. Questo millennio vide l'origine delle più antiche città, accompagnate da gerarchie di potere espanse, nuove identità sociali e modi innovativi di organizzazione del lavoro. Classi selezionate di materiali quali statue, amuleti, idoli degli occhi, mosaici a coni d'argilla e beveled-rim bowls verrano prese in esame. Fattori quali la loro frequenza, qualità, materia prima, produzione e contesti di utilizzo hanno una serie di implicazioni riguardo allo status dei loro produttori e la loro accessibilità nei confronti dei fruitori. In particolare, la loro differente accessibilità testimonia ineguaglianze e iniquità nei periodi Tardo Uruk/Tardo Calcolitico in Mesopotamia. Nel tentativo di identificare ineguaglianze nel passato, in particolare, può essere utile considerare il concetto di attached objects piuttosto che di attached specialists.

Food has played a key role in the emergence of urbanization in Mesopotamia throughout the fourth millennium BCE. Although the food itself is only rarely preserved, we do have a great deal of evidence for the production, redistribution and administration of food and beverages in the Late Uruk period archaeological and textual record. The papers collected here derive from a workshop of the same name that took place in Berlin in March 2014 at the Freie Universität Berlin and was funded by Institut Européen d'Histoire et des Cultures de l'Alimentation in Tours. The workshop brought together specialists from different disciplines such as archaeology, philology and archaeozoology, all of which take the material remains of the Mesopotamian Late Uruk period as their object of investigation. Through the combination of different datasets on Uruk foodways, these papers provide a snapshot of current research on Late Uruk food procurement, processing, consumption and administration.

A crucial element in the examination of food-related practices is a consideration of how plants and animals are turned into food. Much archaeological research has been focused on the acquisition of food ingredients, but considerably less attention has been devoted to specific forms of food preparation (but see papers in Pollock ed. 2012). In a survey of the literature, I have examined forms of food preparation that require heat (cooking, roasting, baking) and specifically the fire installations with the help of which these practices were carried out. An emphasis on heat-based forms of preparing food represents an enormous simplification of a much more complex series of processes, as they are only one of many means of transforming plant and animal products into food (see, for example, brewing, pickling, salting; Leroi-Gourhan 1945).

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 60th International Academic Week organized by the Southeast Europe Association in October 2022. The event brought together scholars to discuss the various facets of international return migration from diverse destination countries back to Southeast Europe. Within this volume, the concept of return takes on a dynamic and multifaceted character. It is seen not as a one-way journey but as an ongoing, non-linear, and reversible process consisting of multiple stages. This approach recognizes that migration is a journey with many dimensions, involving mobility in various directions. The volume sheds light on a variety of migration practices to and from Southeast Europe, revealing a complex interplay of movements over time.

Multidimensional Mathematical Demography is a collection of papers dealing with the problems of inaccurate or unavailable demographic data, transformation of data into probabilities, multidimensional population dynamic models, and the problems of heterogeneity. The papers suggest a unified perspective with emphasis on data structure to work out multidimensional analysis with incomplete data. To solve inaccuracies in data, one paper notes that designs and use of model multistate schedules, for example, methods of inferring data, should be a major part in multistate modeling. Other papers discuss the state-of-the-art in abridged increment-decrement life table methodology. They also describe the estimation of transition probabilities in increment-decrement life tables where mobility data available is from the count of movers from a population survey. One paper reviews the possible extension of a multiregional stochastic theorem associated in a single-regional case; and then analyzes what the stochastic model needs when it is used with real data. Another paper explains strategies concerning population heterogeneity when it pertains to the mixtures of Markov and semi-Markov processes; Markov processes subject to measurement error; and the Heckman and Borjas model. This collection can be read profitably by statisticians, mathematicians, mathematical demographers, mathematical sociologists, economists, professionals in census bureaus, and students of sociology or geography.

Housing: The Impact of Economy and Technology contains the proceedings of the International Congress on Housing: The Impact of Economy and Technology, held in Vienna, Austria on November 15-18, 1981. This book includes many outstanding manuscripts prepared by competent, dedicated individuals. This text covers a wide range of problems associated with housing technology and economy. Some papers detail forming systems for mass housing production; housing option for the elderly; energy aspects of housing design in developing countries; the psychological and physiological ecology of indoor environments; and solar heating and Earth insulation for economical houses. Other papers explore training programs for low-cost housing; influence of color in housing; volatile substances of some materials from housing equipment; the impact of changing society and the economy on the housing industry; comparative housing; energy saving and management in buildings; and industrialization of buildings in developing countries.

In the spring of 1973, the Baharvand tribe from the Luristan province of central western Iran prepared to migrate from their winter pastures to their summer camp in the mountains. Seasonal migration in spring and fall had been their way of life for as long as anyone in the camp could remember. They moved their camp and their animals—sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, and chickens—in order to find green pastures and suitable temperatures. That year, one migrating family in the tribe allowed an outsider to make the trip with them. Anthropology professor Frank Hole, accompanied by his graduate student, Sekandar Amanolahi-Baharvand, traveled with the family of Morad Khan as they migrated into the mountains. In this volume, Hole describes the journey, the modern and prehistoric sites along the way, and the people he traveled with. It is a portrait of people in transition—even as the family follows the ancient migration path, there are signs of economic and social change everywhere. Illustrated. This Report is one of the first comprehensive studies on young children in India. It focuses on children under 6 years of age and presents key aspects of their well-being and development. With the highest number of neonatal, infant and under-5 deaths in the world, there is an urgent need to address issues that continue to affect the young child in India. This volume: Introduces two young child indices aggregating selected indicators to separately track child outcomes and child circumstances. M. N. Srinivas is acclaimed as a doyen of modern sociology and social anthropology in India. In this book, A. M. Shah, a distinguished Indian sociologist and a close associate of Srinivas's, reflects on his legacy as a scholar, teacher, and institution builder. The book is a collection of Shah's five chapters on and an interview with Srinivas, with a comprehensive introduction. He narrates Srinivas's life and work in different phases; discusses his theoretical ideas, especially functionalism, compared with Max Weber's ideas; deliberates on his concept of Sanskritisation and its contemporary relevance; and reflects on his role in the history of sociology and social anthropology in India. In the interview, Srinivas responds to a large number of questions from the style of writing to the dynamics of politics. It shows that while his scholarship was firmly rooted in India, it was sensitive to global ideas and institutions.
