Based on in-depth interviews with parents from different class and racialised backgrounds in three areas in and around Manchester, the book shows how discussions about school choice are shaped by the places in which the choices are made. The book revisits a study conducted in 1994 on subjects defined as historically disadvantaged by the apartheid regime. However, despite the ravages of that regime, these individuals had succeeded and gotten extraordinary opportunities to pursue higher education in colleges and universities in the U.S. In the study, the subjects discussed and shared their visions of South Africa as a new democracy while coming to terms with the impact of apartheid. A sample of the 1994 subjects are surveyed for this book. The author concludes that, in short, while South Africa has possibilities, several challenges remain, in particular economic challenges.

The issue of race is often a scab Americans choose to ignore. However social science has a responsibility and an obligation to examine not simply the amenable subjects but also the controversial. This work, in a word, is controversial. Thomas Franks (2004) argued that cultural differences led white Kansans to abandon the Democratic Party for the Republican Party during the 1980s. He specifically argued that abortion was the unifying issue in this ideological migration. Simultaneously, future President Ronald Reagan opened his campaign for the presidency in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the sight of the massacre of four young civil rights activists over a decade earlier. Race has and is a factor in the American experience; Franks'premise is simply that the absence of the concentration of African Americans in the Kansas area negated the influence of the “black threat hypothesis” on the observed ideological switch of white Kansans. This work argues that Franks'premise fails to incorporate the over arching ideological switch of white voter migration to the Republican party that was occurring during the same period, and that Reagan's speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi was an overt cue that he was rejecting the civil rights consensus for an historically established “race-based social contract” that positioned people of color outside the traditional bounds of the social contract. The study is a sociopolitical analysis of the African American experience utilizing the “racial contract” framework developed by Charles Mills. The “racial contract” holds that the social contract explicitly dictates interactions and transaction costs between citizens and government. Mills supposition is that historically non-Western Europeans were excluded from the penalties for violations of the social contract, and a tacit race based contract dictated transaction costs and interactions between Europeans and non-Europeans. The work utilizes the framework to trace the sociopolitical environment from the first appearance of Africans in America to the present. It has the supposition that the initial sociopolitical status of Africans in America was as a result of the reformation of the Western feudal agrarian culture, with African captives attached to the land as the neo-serfs; but that the reformation of feudalism was only possible within the context that Africans were implicitly viewed as outside the bounds of the codified social contract. It traces American sociopolitical conflict over the expansion of the “racial contract,” which was the basis of the American Civil War; and the establishment of an implicit sociopolitical order within the bounds of the racial contract at the end of the Civil War, with codified sanctions for violations of commensality and endogamy.

Intergroup relations are, by definition, a two-way process, yet the perspectives of minority group members have been given considerably less attention than the perspectives of dominant group members in social psychology. For decades, researchers have explored the nature of white Americans'attitudes, opinions, stereotypes, and behaviors toward African Americans; however, ethnic minorities'perceptions of white Americans have been grossly understudied. Chapter one of this book on ethnic minorities aims to diversify the perspectives and approaches that psychologists pursue to understand intergroup dynamics by investigating ethnic minorities'attitudes toward white Americans. The following chapter examines the effects of neighborhood level and individual level characteristics on the attendance of religious services among first-generation Muslim immigrants and native Christians in the Netherlands. Chapter three examines the political representation of minorities on the example of the ethnic Turkish minority in Bulgaria, an unconventional case of minority participation in politics under the liberal democratic model. Le Cerrejón est une opération d'exploitation à grande échelle de charbon minéral à ciel ouvert dans la péninsule Guajira. Ce projet minier, dont les installations se composent d'une mine, d'une voie ferrée et d'un port maritime, date de la fin des années 1970, fruit d'une association entre l'État colombien et une filiale d'Exxon, multinationale états-unienne. L'installation de la mine, transformant le territoire, l'économie ainsi que l'ordre social et politique, fut un événement fondamental dans l'histoire des Wayuu ou Goajiros, habitants ancestraux de la péninsule, qui virent leurs conditions de vie bouleversées. Cette étude propose une analyse du processus d'articulation des Indiens au projet minier. Les questions se centrent sur les relations entre les Wayuu, la multinationale et l'État, sur une période de près de trente ans (1976-2004). L'analyse aborde deux processus en interrelation. Le premier est l'activation de stratégies par les Wayuu, pour faire face et s'adapter à ce projet géo-politico-économique. Le second est celui des mécanismes mis en œuvre par l'État et la multinationale pour installer la mine et assurer sa viabilité et sa sécurité. Les Wayuu n'ont pas résisté au « développement ». Ils en ont réinterprété les perspectives afin d'envisager leurs projections de vie, à l'aune de leurs nouvelles conditions d'existence. Le développement s'est progressivement constitué dans une dimension politique renvoyant à une théorie de gestion du futur garantissant les axes de la reproduction socioethnique wayuu. C'est à travers la production d'une politique de revendication identitaire que les Wayuu se sont finalement articulés au projet minier, promis à durer trente ans de plus, sans pour autant se soumettre à son « inévitabilité ».
