This monograph introduces breakthrough control algorithms for partial differential equation models with moving boundaries, the study of which is known as the Stefan problem. The algorithms can be used to improve the performance of various processes with phase changes, such as additive manufacturing. Using the authors'innovative design solutions, readers will also be equipped to apply estimation algorithms for real-world phase change dynamics, from polar ice to lithium-ion batteries.A historical treatment of the Stefan problem opens the book, situating readers in the larger context of the area. Following this, the chapters are organized into two parts. The first presents the design method and analysis of the boundary control and estimation algorithms. This volume contains extended abstracts outlining selected presentations delivered by participants of the joint international multidisciplinary workshop MURPHYS-HSFS-2018 (MUltiRate Processes and HYSteresis; Hysteresis and Slow-Fast Systems), dedicated to the mathematical theory and applications of the multiple scale systems, the systems with hysteresis and general trends in the dynamical systems theory. The workshop was jointly organized by the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), Barcelona, and the Collaborative Research Center 910, Berlin, and held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica in Bellaterra, Barcelona, from May 28th to June 1st, 2018. This was the ninth workshop continuing a series of biennial meetings started in Ireland in 2002, and the second workshop of this series held at the CRM. Earlier editions of the workshops in this series were held in Cork, Pechs, Suceava, Lutherstadt and Berlin. The collection includes brief researcharticles reporting new results, descriptions of preliminary work, open problems, and the outcome of work in groups initiated during the workshop. Topics include analysis of hysteresis phenomena, multiple scale systems, self-organizing nonlinear systems, singular perturbations and critical phenomena, as well as applications of the hysteresis and the theory of singularly perturbed systems to fluid dynamics, chemical kinetics, cancer modeling, population modeling, mathematical economics, and control.The book is intended for established researchers, as well as for PhD and postdoctoral students who want to learn more about the latest advances in these highly active research areas.

Interest in the control and optimization of multiscale process systems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight feedback control and optimal operation of complex processes, such as deposition and sputtering of thin films in semiconductor manufacturing, which are characterized by highly coupled macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. Drawing from recent advances in the dynamics and control of distributed parameter processes for which continuum laws are applicable as well as stochastic modeling of phenomena at mesoscopic/microscopic length scales, control and optimization of multiscale process systems has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control engineering. This book—the first of its kind—presents general methods for feedback controller synthesis and optimization of multiscale systems, illustrating their application to thin-film growth, sputtering processes, and catalytic systems of industrial interest. Beginning with an introduction to general issues on control and optimization of multiscale systems and a review of previous work in this area, the book discusses detailed modeling approaches for multiscale processes with emphasis on the theory and implementation of kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, methods for feedback control using kinetic Monte Carlo models, stochastic model construction and parameter estimation, predictive and covariance control using stochastic partial differential equation models, and both steady-state and dynamic optimization algorithms that efficiently address coupled macroscopic and microscopic objectives. As soon as we (AS and PS) completed writing the book on H Optimal Con- 2 trol, another task of equal magnitude was laid to our charge. This task was to work on?ltering and related topics. This book releases us from this charge. In this endeavor, we are fortunate to have found a capable person in our friend and colleague (AAS) who helped us release our burden. The subject of?ltering is indeed vast and immense, much more so than the subject of H Optimal Control. In this work, we have tried to present what we 2 believe to be the fundamental issues of?ltering. The book is not intended to give a chronological development of?ltering from a historical point of view. A vast number of books already do so. Our intent here is to develop from our perspective the complete theory of?ltering and various design methodologies associated with it along with their practical implementations. In this respect, we present here a state-of-the-art view of exact and almost input-decoupled?ltering, H,and H 2 1?ltering and inverse?ltering issues, and include an application of?ltering and inverse?ltering to fault detection, isolation, and estimation.
