This book describes the basic physical principles of techniques to generate and ultrashort pulse lasers and applications to ultrafast spectroscopy of various materials covering chemical molecular compounds, solid-state materials, exotic novel materials including topological materials, biological molecules and bio- and synthetic polymers. It introduces non-linear optics which provides the basics of generation and measurement of pulses and application examples of ultrafast spectroscopy to solid state physics. Also it provide not only material properties but also material processing procedures. The book describes also details of the world shortest visible laser and DUV lasers developed by the author's group. This thesis presents and discusses recent optical low-temperature experiments on disordered NbN, granular Al thin-films, and the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn5, offering a unified picture of quantum-critical superconductivity. It provides a concise introduction to the respective theoretical models employed to interpret the experimental results, and guides readers through in-depth calculations supplemented with supportive figures in order to both retrace the interpretations and span the bridge between experiment and state-of-the art theory.

This book studies the dynamics of fundamental collective excitations in quantum materials, focusing on the use of state-of-the-art ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy. Collective behaviour in solids lies at the origin of several cooperative phenomena that can lead to profound transformations, instabilities and phase transitions. Revealing the dynamics of collective excitations is a topic of pivotal importance in contemporary condensed matter physics, as it provides information on the strength and spatial distribution of interactions and correlation. The experimental framework explored in this book relies on setting a material out-of-equilibrium by an ultrashort laser pulse and monitoring the photo-induced changes in its optical properties over a broad spectral region in the visible or deep-ultraviolet. Collective excitations (e.g. plasmons, excitons, phonons…) emerge either in the frequency domain as spectral features across the probed range, or in the time domain as coherent modes triggered by the pump pulse. Mapping the temporal evolution of these collective excitations provides access to the hierarchy of low-energy phenomena occurring in the solid during its path towards thermodynamic equilibrium. This methodology is used to investigate a number of strongly interacting and correlated materials with an increasing degree of internal complexity beyond conventional band theory.

This book summarizes the most recent and compelling experimental results for complex oxide interfaces. The results of this book were obtained with the cutting-edge photoemission technique at highest energy resolution. Due to their fascinating properties for new-generation electronic devices and the challenge of investigating buried regions, the book chiefly focuses on complex oxide interfaces. The crucial feature of exploring buried interfaces is the use of soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) operating on the energy range of a few hundred eV to increase the photoelectron mean free path, enabling the photons to penetrate through the top layers – in contrast to conventional ultraviolet (UV)-ARPES techniques. The results presented here, achieved by different research groups around the world, are summarized in a clearly structured way and discussed in comparison with other photoemission spectroscopy techniques and other oxide materials. They are complemented and supported by the most recent theoretical calculations as well as results of complementary experimental techniques including electron transport and inelastic resonant X-ray scattering.

This book covers different aspects of the physics of iron-based superconductors ranging from the theoretical, the numerical and computational to the experimental ones. It starts from the basic theory modeling many-body physics in Fe-superconductors and other multi-orbital materials and reaches up to the magnetic and Cooper pair fluctuations and nematic order. Finally, it offers a comprehensive overview of the most recent advancements in the experimental investigations of iron based superconductors.

This thesis presents various characteristics of 122-type iron pnictide (FeSC) such as crystal and electronic structure, carrier-doping effect, and impurity-scattering effect, using transport, magnetization, specific heat, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and optical spectral measurements. Most notably the measurement on the magnetic fluctuation in the material successfully explains already known unusual electronic properties, i.e., superconducting gap symmetry, anisotropy of in-plane resistivity in layered structure, and charge dynamics; and comparing them with those of normal phase, the controversial problems in FeSCs are eventually settled. The thesis provides broad coverage of the physics of FeSCs both in the normal and superconducting phase, and readers therefore benefit from the efficient up-to-date study of FeSCs in this thesis. An additional attraction is the detailed description of the experimental result critical for the controversial problems remaining since the discovery of FeSC in 2008, which helps readers follow up recent developments in superconductor research.

This book explores the conversion for solar energy into renewable liquid fuels through electrochemical reactions. The first section of the book is devoted to the theoretical fundamentals of solar fuels production, focusing on the surface properties of semiconductor materials in contact with aqueous solutions and the reaction mechanisms. Using the nano metric resolution of atomic force microscopy techniques, this work explores the rich fundamental physics and novel functionalities of domain walls in ferroelectric materials, the nano scale interfaces separating regions of differently oriented spontaneous polarization. Due to the local symmetry-breaking caused by the change in polarization, domain walls are found to possess an unexpected lateral piezoelectric response, even when this is symmetry-forbidden in the parent material. This has interesting potential applications in electromechanical devices based on ferroelectric domain patterning. Moreover, electrical conduction is shown to arise at domain walls in otherwise insulating lead zirconate titanate, the first such observation outside of multiferroic bismuth ferrite, due to the tendency of the walls to localize defects. The role of defects is then explored in the theoretical framework of disordered elastic interfaces possessing a characteristic roughness scaling and complex dynamic response. It is shown that the heterogeneous disorder landscape in ferroelectric thin films leads to a breakdown of the usual self-affine roughness, possibly related to strong pinning at individual defects. Finally, the roles of varying environmental conditions and defect densities in domain switching are explored and shown to be adequately modelled as a competition between screening effects and pinning.

Determining the elemental composition of surfaces is an essential measurement in characterizing solid surfaces. At present, many ap­ proaches may be applied for measuring the elemental and molecular composition of a surface. Each method has particular strengths and limitations that often are directly connected to the physical processes involved. Typically, atoms and molecules on the surface and in the near surface region may be excited by photons, electrons, ions, or neutrals, and the detected particles are emitted, ejected, or scattered ions or electrons. The purpose of this book is to bring together a discussion of the surface compositional analysis that depends on detecting scattered or sputtered ions, and the methods emphasized are those where instruments are commercially available for carrying out the analysis. For each topic treated, the physical principles, instrumentation, qualitative analysis, artifacts, quantitative analysis, applications, opportunities, and limita­ tions are discussed. The first chapter provides an overview of the role of elemental composition in surface science; compositional depth profiling; stimulation by an electric field, electrons, neutrals, or photons and detection of ions; and then stimulation by ions, and detection of ions, electrons, photons, or neutrals.

This publication is the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on the Dynamics of Polyatomic Van der Waals Molecules held at the Chateau de Bonas, Castera-Verduzan, France, from August 21 through August 26, 1989. Van der Waals complexes provide important model problems for understanding energy transfer and dissipation. These processes can be described in great detail for Van der Waals complexes, and the insight gained from such studies can be applied to more complicated chemical problems that are not amenable to detailed study. The workshop concentrated on the current questions and future prospects for extend­ ing our highly detailed knowledge of triatomic Van der Waals molecule dynamics to polyatomic molecules and clusters (one molecule surrounded by several, or up to sev­ eral tens of, atoms). Both experimental and theoretical studies were discussed, with particular emphasis on the dynamical behavior of dissociation as observed in the dis­ tributions of quantum states of the dissociation product molecules. The discussion of theoretical approaches covered the range from complete ab initio studies with a rig­ orous quantum mechanical treatment of the dynamics to the empirical determination of potential energy surfaces and a classical mechanical treatment of the dynamics. Time independent, time dependent and statistical approaches were considered. The workshop brought together experts from different fields which, we hope, benefited from their mutual interaction around the central theme of the Dynamics of Van der Waals complexes.

Zwischenmolekulare Wechselwirkungen und insbesondere Wasserstoffbrücken sind schon lange Gegenstand verschiedenster Untersuchungen. Dabei werden meist Kontakte zwischen N-H und O-H Bindungen auf der einen und freien Elektronenpaaren an N- und O-Atomen auf der anderen Seite betrachtet. Derartige Wechselwirkungen bilden das Grundgerüst von Proteinen und DNA. Abgesehen von diesen typischen Formen intermolekularer Wechselwirkung existieren allerdings auch schwächer ausgeprägte Varianten, die alleine oder als zusätzlicher, Struktur prägender Faktor an der Bildung von Aggregaten mitwirken. Hier sind zunächst atypische Formen der Wasserstoffbrücke zu nennen. Ein bekanntes Beispiel ist die CH-Gruppe, die bezüglich ihrer Bedeutung als Wasserstoffbrückendonor lange Zeit angezweifelt wurde, jedoch mittlerweile etabliert ist. Als Wasserstoffbrückenakzeptor bieten sich außerdem?-Systeme an. Auch jenseits des Themas Wasserstoffbrücken existieren attraktive Wechselwirkungen, die zur Bildung von Aggregaten führen können. Sie gehen auf elektrostatische und induktive Wechselwirkungen sowie Dispersionswechselwirkungen zurück. Ein gutes Beispiel für Elektrostatik stellt CO2 dar, dessen Selbstaggregate bereits ausführlich untersucht wurden und das in Kombination mit Methylacetat auch in dieser Arbeit behandelt wird. Induktion und Dispersion sind insbesondere dann wichtig, wenn einer oder beide Bindungspartner keine ausgeprägte Ladungstrennung aufweisen. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden solche schwachen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Molekülen mittels Jet-FTIR-Spektroskopie und Vergleich mit quantenchemischen Rechnungen untersucht. Die Abkühlung im Überschallstrahl sorgt dafür, dass die bei Raumtemperatur oft nicht beständigen Aggregate spektroskopisch nachweisbar werden. Da sich durch Clusterbildung in der Regel sichtbare Veränderungen im Schwingungsspektrum zeigen, ist eine Separation der Aggregate von den Monomeren möglich. Die in der Arbeit behandelten Systeme lassen sich in Strukturen mit CH-Funktionen (Halogenkohlenwasserstoffe), NH-Funktionen (vor allem Pyrrolidin- und Pyrrolderivate) und Carbonylgruppen (Laktone, Ester, Hydroxyester) aufteilen. Jede der genannten Gruppen bietet dabei eine Fülle an Beispielen für die Bildung von Molekülaggregaten unter Mitwirkung schwacher Wechselwirkungen, die mit Hilfe von Schwingungsspektroskopie im Überschallstrahl nachgewiesen werden konnten.

Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

It has been four years since the publication of the?rst edition of this book. During these four years optical imaging has advanced considerably. Nevertheless, when we were asked to compile a second edition of this book the?rst question we asked was: are there any topics that were missed out from the?rst edition? Even though there are a fairly large number of subjects that we could potentially have considered it was decided to extend the book by two new chapters. The?rst one is on the use of di?ractive optical elements in high quality objective lenses by Drs Brunner and Dobschal from Carl Zeiss AG. It is particularly exciting to have this chapter in the book because it is likely that di?ractive elements will play an increasingly imp- tant role in high precision optical instrumentation in the future. The second new chapter is by Daniel Axelrod of University of Michigan on total internal re?ection?uorescence (TIRF). We believe that many readers will?nd the chapter from Prof. Axelrod, who developed TIRF about 20 years ago, insightful and very interesting. In addition to the new chapters some chapters have been revised and consid- ably expanded. These revisions are primarily there to include the most up-to-date material and recent advances of the?eld. Special note of thanks must go to Drs Claus Ascheron and Angela Lahee of Springer-Verlagfor their encouragementand help.

This is the ninth volume of a well-established series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. It reviews recent developments concerning mainly semiconductor nanostructures and inelastic x-ray scattering, including both coherent time-domain and spontaneous scattering studies. In the past few years, light scattering has become one of the most important research and characterization methods for studying carbon nanotubes and semiconducting quantum dots, and a crucial tool for exploring the coupled exciton--photon system in semiconductor cavities. Among the novel techniques discussed in this volume are pump--probe ultrafast measurements and those which use synchrotron radiation as light source. The book addresses improvements in the intensity, beam quality and time synchronization of modern synchrotron sources, which made it possible to measure the phonon dispersion in very small samples and to determine electronic energy bands as well as enabling real-time observations of high-frequency sound propagation.

Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt die Abhängigkeit zwischen der Sekundärstruktur D,L alternierend konfigurierter Peptide und ihrer funktionellen Eigenschaften. Die strukturelle Vielfalt alternierend konfigurierter Peptide wurde in zwei Richtungen untersucht. Einerseits wurde, basierend auf der Kristallstruktur eines aromatischen alternierend konfigurierten Nonamers, ein Gramicidin A Analogon entwickelt und dessen strukturelles Verhalten und Interaktion mit zahlreichen Modellmembranen mittels Röntgenreflektivität und CD-Spektroskopie untersucht. Die Ausbildung einer transmembranen -Helix in Abhähngigkeit von der Lipiddoppelschicht konnte über Differenzmessungen der Elektronendichteprofile der entsprechenden iodmarkierten Peptide belegt werden. Dem zweiten Teil der Dissertation liegen die linearen Doppelstränge der Alanyl-Peptid-Nukleinsäuren (Alanyl-PNAs) und zyklische alternierend konfigurierte Peptide zugrunde. Diese beiden Strukturmotive wurden ausgenutzt, um Metallionen gezielt in einer hydrophoben Tasche zu koordinieren und eine mögliche resultierende katalytische Aktivität zu untersuchen. Untersuchungen über temperaturabhängige UV-Spektroskopie, EXAFS und ESR Experimente zeigten eine entsprechende Koordination der jeweiligen Metalle. Eine viel versprechende Phosphatase Aktivität konnte für die Zyklopeptide nachgewiesen werden.

Die vorliegende Arbeit umfasst sowohl spektroskopische als auch theoretische Untersuchungen von diversen 1:1-Komplexen des trans-Stilbens mit verschiedenen Clusterpartnern. Die Aufnahme der Spektren erfolgte massenselektiv in einem Überschalldüsenstrahl mittels resonant verstärkter Mehrphotonenionisation (REMPI = resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization) im Bereich des elektronischen Übergangs von S0 nach S1 für Wellenlängen zwischen 308 und 315 nm. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht der Vergleich von REMPI-Spektren für die homologe Reihe der Alkan-Cluster von Methan bis n-Hexan mit ihren perfluorierten Analoga.

Since the discovery in 1986 of high temperature superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller, a considerable progress has been made and several important scientific problems have emerged. Within this NATO Advanced Study Institute our intention was to focus mainly on the controversial topic of the symmetry of the superconducting gap and given the very short coherence length, the role of fluctuations. The Institute on ‘The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High- Superconductors'took place in the “Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse” in Corsica, France, between 1 - 13 September 1997.
