The First Five Years (Springer, 2010) and The Abel Prize 2008–2012 (Springer, 2014) as well as on The Abel Prize 2013–2017 (Springer, 2019), which profile the previous Abel Prize laureates.

This book is intended mainly as a teaching tool directed toward those who desire a deeper understanding of group theory in terms of examples applicable to the physical world and/or of the physical world in terms of the symmetry properties which can best be formulated in terms of group theory. Both advanced students and scholars interested in the relationship between group theory and physics will find it instructive. In particular, those engaged in high-energy physics and foundations of quantum mechanics will find this book rich in illustrative examples of relativistic quantum mechanics. This new edition contains four new chapters, two of which are consistent with Dirac's aim to combine the important developments in physics in the twentieth century, namely quantum mechanics and special relativity. Moreover, these new chapters also discuss various aspects of classical and quantum optics that are now understood to be interrelated. Most of the original chapters have been updated, either with new material added or in some instances reinterpretation of the original. The order of the chapters has been rearranged to create a more cohesive presentation. The original purpose of the first edition, namely to present examples to which physics students and researchers can relate, has not been altered.

This proceedings volume gathers together original articles and survey works that originate from presentations given at the conference Transient Transcendence in Transylvania, held in Brașov, Romania, from May 13th to 17th, 2019. The conference gathered international experts from various fields of mathematics and computer science, with diverse interests and viewpoints on transcendence. The covered topics are related to algebraic and transcendental aspects of special functions and special numbers arising in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. Besides contributions on key topics from invited speakers, this volume also brings selected papers from attendees.

This book emphasizes those topological methods (of dynamical systems) and theories that are useful in the study of different classes of nonautonomous evolutionary equations. The content is developed over six chapters, providing a thorough introduction to the techniques used in the Chapters III-VI described by Chapter I-II. The author gives a systematic treatment of the basic mathematical theory and constructive methods for Nonautonomous Dynamics. They show how these diverse topics are connected to other important parts of mathematics, including Topology, Functional Analysis and Qualitative Theory of Differential/Difference Equations. Throughout the book a nice balance is maintained between rigorous mathematics and applications (ordinary differential/difference equations, functional differential equations and partial difference equations). The primary readership includes graduate and PhD students and researchers inin the field of dynamical systems and their applications (control theory, economic dynamics, mathematical theory of climate, population dynamics, oscillation theory etc).

This volume presents the proceedings of the meeting New Trends in One-Dimensional Dynamics, which celebrated the 70th birthday of Welington de Melo and was held at the IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, in November 2016. Highlighting the latest results in one-dimensional dynamics and its applications, the contributions gathered here also celebrate the highly successful meeting, which brought together experts in the field, including many of Welington de Melo's co-authors and former doctoral students.Sadly, Welington de Melo passed away shortly after the conference, so that the present volume became more a tribute to him. His role in the development of mathematics was undoubtedly an important one, especially in the area of low-level dynamics, and his legacy includes, in addition to many articles with fundamental contributions, books that are required reading for all newcomers to the field.

This book is intended as an introductory lecture in material physics, in which the modern computational group theory and the electronic structure calculation are in collaboration.The first part explains how to use computer algebra for applications in solid-state simulation, based on the GAP computer algebra package. Computer algebra enables us to easily obtain various group theoretical properties, such as the representations, character tables, and subgroups. Furthermore it offers a new perspective on material design, which could be executed in a mathematically rigorous and systematic way.The second part then analyzes the relation between the structural symmetry and the electronic structure in C60 (as an example of a system without periodicity). The principal object of the study was to illustrate the hierarchical change in the quantum-physical properties of the molecule, which correlates to the reduction in the symmetry (as it descends down in the ladder of subgroups).Thebook also presents the computation of the vibrational modes of the C60 by means of the computer algebra. In order to serve the common interests of researchers, the details of the computations (the required initial data and the small programs developed for the purpose) are explained in as much detail as possible.

This book is the second volume of the proceedings of the joint conference X. International Symposium “Quantum Theory and Symmetries” (QTS-X) and XII. International Workshop “Lie Theory and Its Applications in Physics” (LT-XII), 19–25 June 2017, Varna, Bulgaria.The QTS series started around the core concept that symmetries underlie all descriptions of quantum systems. It has since evolved into a symposium on the frontiers of theoretical and mathematical physics. The LT series covers the whole field of Lie Theory in its widest sense together with its applications in many facets of physics. As an interface between mathematics and physics the workshop serves as a meeting place for mathematicians and theoretical and mathematical physicists.In the division of the material between the two volumes, the Editor has tried to select for the first and second volumes papers that are more oriented toward mathematics and physics, respectively. However, this division is relative since many papers could have been placed in either volume. The topics covered in this volume represent the most modern trends in the fields of the joint conferences: symmetries in string theories, conformal field theory, holography, gravity theories and cosmology, gauge theories, foundations of quantum theory, nonrelativistic and classical theories.

The latest of five multidisciplinary volumes, this book spans the STEAM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics, and Health) disciplines with the intent to generate meaningful interdisciplinary interaction and student interest. This book is a treatise on time and on background independence in physics. It first considers how time is conceived of in each accepted paradigm of physics: Newtonian, special relativity, quantum mechanics (QM) and general relativity (GR). Substantial differences are moreover uncovered between what is meant by time in QM and in GR. These differences jointly source the Problem of Time: Nine interlinked facets which arise upon attempting concurrent treatment of the QM and GR paradigms, as is required in particular for a background independent theory of quantum gravity. A sizeable proportion of current quantum gravity programs - e.g. geometrodynamical and loop quantum gravity approaches to quantum GR, quantum cosmology, supergravity and M-theory - are background independent in this sense. This book's foundational topic is thus furthermore of practical relevance in the ongoing development of quantum gravity programs. This book shows moreoverthat eight of the nine facets of the Problem of Time already occur upon entertaining background independence in classical (rather than quantum) physics. By this development, and interpreting shape theory as modelling background independence, this book further establishes background independence as a field of study. Background independent mechanics, as well as minisuperspace (spatially homogeneous) models of GR and perturbations thereabout are used to illustrate these points. As hitherto formulated, the different facets of the Problem of Time greatly interfere with each others'attempted resolutions. This book explains how, none the less, a local resolution of the Problem of Time can be arrived at after various reconceptualizations of the facets and reformulations of their mathematical implementation. Self-contained appendices on mathematical methods for basic and foundational quantum gravity are included. Finally, this book outlines how supergravity is refreshingly different from GR as a realization of background independence, and what background independence entails at the topological level and beyond.

Collecting together contributed lectures and mini-courses, this book details the research presented in a special semester titled “Geometric mechanics – variational and stochastic methods” run in the first half of 2015 at the Centre Interfacultaire Bernoulli (CIB) of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The aim of the semester was to develop a common language needed to handle the wide variety of problems and phenomena occurring in stochastic geometric mechanics. It gathered mathematicians and scientists from several different areas of mathematics (from analysis, probability, numerical analysis and statistics, to algebra, geometry, topology, representation theory, and dynamical systems theory) and also areas of mathematical physics, control theory, robotics, and the life sciences, with the aim of developing the new research area in a concentrated joint effort, both from the theoretical and applied points of view. The lectures were given by leading specialists indifferent areas of mathematics and its applications, building bridges among the various communities involved and working jointly on developing the envisaged new interdisciplinary subject of stochastic geometric mechanics.

This book explains the group representation theory for quantum theory in the language of quantum theory. As is well known, group representation theory is very strong tool for quantum theory, in particular, angular momentum, hydrogen-type Hamiltonian, spin-orbit interaction, quark model, quantum optics, and quantum information processing including quantum error correction. To describe a big picture of application of representation theory to quantum theory, the book needs to contain the following six topics, permutation group, SU(2) and SU(d), Heisenberg representation, squeezing operation, Discrete Heisenberg representation, and the relation with Fourier transform from a unified viewpoint by including projective representation. Unfortunately, although there are so many good mathematical books for a part of six topics, no book contains all of these topics because they are too segmentalized. Further, some of them are written in an abstract way in mathematical style and, often, thematerials are too segmented. At least, the notation is not familiar to people working with quantum theory.Others are good elementary books, but do not deal with topics related to quantum theory. In particular, such elementary books do not cover projective representation, which is more important in quantum theory. On the other hand, there are several books for physicists. However, these books are too simple and lack the detailed discussion. Hence, they are not useful for advanced study even in physics. To resolve this issue, this book starts with the basic mathematics for quantum theory. Then, it introduces the basics of group representation and discusses the case of the finite groups, the symmetric group, e.g. Next, this book discusses Lie group and Lie algebra. This part starts with the basics knowledge, and proceeds to the special groups, e.g., SU(2), SU(1,1), and SU(d). After the special groups, it explains concrete applications to physical systems, e.g., angular momentum, hydrogen-type Hamiltonian, spin-orbit interaction, and quark model. Then, it proceeds to the general theory for Lie group and Lie algebra. Using this knowledge, this book explains the Bosonic system, which has the symmetries of Heisenberg group and the squeezing symmetry by SL(2,R) and Sp(2n,R). Finally, as the discrete version, this book treats the discrete Heisenberg representation which is related to quantum error correction. To enhance readers'undersnding, this book contains 54 figures, 23 tables, and 111 exercises with solutions.

This monograph introduces the basic concepts of the theory of causal fermion systems, a recent approach to the description of fundamental physics. The theory yields quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases and is therefore a candidate for a unified physical theory. From the mathematical perspective, causal fermion systems provide a general framework for describing and analyzing non-smooth geometries and'quantum geometries'. The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, called the causal action principle. In addition to the basics, the book provides all the necessary mathematical background and explains how the causal action principle gives rise to the interactions of the standard model plus gravity on the level of second-quantized fermionic fields coupled to classical bosonic fields. The focus is on getting a mathematically sound connection between causal fermion systems and physical systems in Minkowski space. The book is intended for graduate students entering the field, and is furthermore a valuable reference work for researchers in quantum field theory and quantum gravity.

This monograph offers an overview of rigorous results on fermionic topological insulators from the complex classes, namely, those without symmetries or with just a chiral symmetry. Particular focus is on the stability of the topological invariants in the presence of strong disorder, on the interplay between the bulk and boundary invariants and on their dependence on magnetic fields.The first part presents motivating examples and the conjectures put forward by the physics community, together with a brief review of the experimental achievements. The second part develops an operator algebraic approach for the study of disordered topological insulators. This leads naturally to the use of analytical tools from K-theory and non-commutative geometry, such as cyclic cohomology, quantized calculus with Fredholm modules and index pairings. New results include a generalized Streda formula and a proof of the delocalized nature of surface states in topological insulators with non-trivialinvariants. The concluding chapter connects the invariants to measurable quantities and thus presents a refined physical characterization of the complex topological insulators. This book is intended for advanced students in mathematical physics and researchers alike.

This thesis describes a new connection between algebraic geometry, topology, number theory and quantum field theory. It offers a pedagogical introduction to algebraic topology, allowing readers to rapidly develop basic skills, and it also presents original ideas to inspire new research in the quest for dualities. Its ambitious goal is to construct a method based on the universal coefficient theorem for identifying new dualities connecting different domains of quantum field theory. This thesis opens a new area of research in the domain of non-perturbative physics—one in which the use of different coefficient structures in (co)homology may lead to previously unknown connections between different regimes of quantum field theories. The origin of dualities is an issue in fundamental physics that continues to puzzle the research community with unexpected results like the AdS/CFT duality or the ER-EPR conjecture. This thesis analyzes these observations from a novel and original point ofview, mainly based on a fundamental connection between number theory and topology. Beyond its scientific qualities, it also offers a pedagogical introduction to advanced mathematics and its connection with physics. This makes it a valuable resource for students in mathematical physics and researchers wanting to gain insights into (co)homology theories with coefficients or the way in which Grothendieck's work may be connected with physics.

In a knowledge-based society, research into fundamental physics plays a vital role not only in the enhancement of human knowledge but also in the development of new technology that affects everyday life.The international symposium series Frontiers of Fundamental Physics (FFP) regularly brings together eminent scholars and researchers working in various areas in physics to exchange expertise, ideas, results, and new research perspectives. The twelfth such symposium, FFP12, took place at the University of Udine, Italy, and covered diverse fields of research: astrophysics, high energy physics and particle physics, theoretical physics, gravitation and cosmology, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. Importantly, it also devoted a great deal of attention to physics education research, teacher training in modern physics, and popularization of physics. The high scientific level of FFP12 was guaranteed by the careful selection made by scientific coordinators from among 250 submissions from 28 countries across the world. During the three days of the conference, nine general talks were delivered in plenary sessions, 29 invited talks were given in specific topic areas, and 59 oral presentations were made. This book presents a selection of the best contributions at FFP12 with the aim of acquainting readers with the most important recent advances in fundamental physics and in physics education and teacher development.

Let M be a smooth manifold and G a Lie group. In this book we shall study infinite-dimensional Lie algebras associated both to the group Map(M, G) of smooth mappings from M to G and to the group of dif­ feomorphisms of M. In the former case the Lie algebra of the group is the algebra Mg of smooth mappings from M to the Lie algebra gof G. In the latter case the Lie algebra is the algebra Vect M of smooth vector fields on M. However, it turns out that in many applications to field theory and statistical physics one must deal with certain extensions of the above mentioned Lie algebras. In the simplest case M is the unit circle SI, G is a simple finite­ dimensional Lie group and the central extension of Map( SI, g) is an affine Kac-Moody algebra. The highest weight theory of finite­ dimensional Lie algebras can be extended to the case of an affine Lie algebra. The important point is that Map(Sl, g) can be split to positive and negative Fourier modes and the finite-dimensional piece g corre­ sponding to the zero mode.

These two volumes constitute the Proceedings of the `Conférence Moshé Flato, 1999'. Their spectrum is wide but the various areas covered are, in fact, strongly interwoven by a common denominator, the unique personality and creativity of the scientist in whose honor the Conference was held, and the far-reaching vision that underlies his scientific activity. With these two volumes, the reader will be able to take stock of the present state of the art in a number of subjects at the frontier of current research in mathematics, mathematical physics, and physics. Volume I is prefaced by reminiscences of and tributes to Flato's life and work. It also includes a section on the applications of sciences to insurance and finance, an area which was of interest to Flato before it became fashionable. The bulk of both volumes is on physical mathematics, where the reader will find these ingredients in various combinations, fundamental mathematical developments based on them, and challenging interpretations of physical phenomena. Audience: These volumes will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in a variety of domains, ranging from abstract mathematics to theoretical physics and other applications. Some parts will be accessible to proficient undergraduate students, and even to persons with a minimum of scientific knowledge but enough curiosity.

Following the concept of the EMS series this volume sets out to familiarize the reader to the fundamental ideas and results of modern ergodic theory and to its applications to dynamical systems and statistical mechanics. The exposition starts from the basic of the subject, introducing ergodicity, mixing and entropy. Then the ergodic theory of smooth dynamical systems is presented - hyperbolic theory, billiards, one-dimensional systems and the elements of KAM theory. Numerous examples are presented carefully along with the ideas underlying the most important results. The last part of the book deals with the dynamical systems of statistical mechanics, and in particular with various kinetic equations. This book is compulsory reading for all mathematicians working in this field, or wanting to learn about it.

Preface Among the various branches of mathematics, number theory is characterized to a lesser degree by its primary subject ('integers') than by a psychologi­ cal attitude. Actually, number theory also deals with rational, algebraic, and transcendental numbers, with some very specific analytic functions (such as Dirichlet series and modular forms), and with some geometric objects (such as lattices and schemes over Z). The question whether a given article belongs to number theory is answered by its author's system of values. If arithmetic is not there, the paper will hardly be considered as number-theoretical, even if it deals exclusively with integers and congruences. On the other hand, any mathematical tool, say, homotopy theory or dynamical systems may become an important source of number-theoretical inspiration. For this reason, com­ binatorics and the theory of recursive functions are not usually associated with number theory, whereas modular functions are. In this report we interpret number theory broadly. There are compelling reasons to adopt this viewpoint. First of all, the integers constitute (together with geometric images) one of the primary subjects of mathematics in general. Because of this, the history of elementary number theory is as long as the history of all mathematics, and the history of modern mathematic began when'numbers'and'figures'were united by the concept of coordinates (which in the opinion of LR. Shafarevich also forms the basic idea of algebra).

The workshop on The Cosmology of Extra Dimensions and Varying Fundamental Constants, which was part of JENAM 2002, was held at the Physics Department of the University of Porto (FCUP) from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2002. It was regularly attended by about 110 participants, of which 65 were officially registered in the VFC workshop, while the others came from the rest of the JENAM workshops. There were also a few science correspondents from the national and international press. During the 3 days of the scientific programme, 8 Invited Reviews and 30 Oral Communications were presented. The speakers came from 11 different European countries, and also from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Japan and the U.S.A. There were also speakers from six Portuguese research institutions, and nine of the speak­ ers were Ph.D. students. The contributions are presented in these proceedings in chronological order. The workshop brought together string theorists, particle physicists, theoretical and observational cosmologists, relativists and observational astrophysicists. It was generally agreed that this inter-disciplinarity was the greatest strength of the work­ shop, since it provided people coming into this very recent topic from the various different backgrounds with an opportunity to understand each other's language and thereby gain a more solid understanding of the overall picture.

This is a monograph on geometrical and topological features which arise in various quantization procedures. Quantization schemes consider the feasibility of arriving at a quantum system from a classical one and these involve three major procedures viz. i) geometric quantization, ii) Klauder quantization, and iii) stochastic quanti­ zation. In geometric quantization we have to incorporate a hermitian line bundle to effectively generate the quantum Hamiltonian operator from a classical Hamil­ tonian. Klauder quantization also takes into account the role of the connection one-form along with coordinate independence. In stochastic quantization as pro­ posed by Nelson, Schrodinger equation is derived from Brownian motion processes; however, we have difficulty in its relativistic generalization. It has been pointed out by several authors that this may be circumvented by formulating a new geometry where Brownian motion proceses are considered in external as well as in internal space and, when the complexified space-time is considered, the usual path integral formulation is achieved. When this internal space variable is considered as a direc­ tion vector introducing an anisotropy in the internal space, we have the quantization of a Fermi field. This helps us to formulate a stochastic phase space formalism when the internal extension can be treated as a gauge theoretic extension. This suggests that massive fermions may be considered as Skyrme solitons. The nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is achieved in the sharp point limit.

Hard Ball Systems and the Lorentz Gas are fundamental models arising in the theory of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. Moreover, in these models, some key laws of statistical physics can also be tested or even established by mathematically rigorous tools. The mathematical methods are most beautiful but sometimes quite involved. This collection of surveys written by leading researchers of the fields - mathematicians, physicists or mathematical physicists - treat both mathematically rigourous results, and evolving physical theories where the methods are analytic or computational. Some basic topics: hyperbolicity and ergodicity, correlation decay, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, entropy production, irreversibility. This collection is a unique introduction into the subject for graduate students, postdocs or researchers - in both mathematics and physics - who want to start working in the field.

The theory and applications of infinite dimensional dynamical systems have attracted the attention of scientists for quite some time. Dynamical issues arise in equations that attempt to model phenomena that change with time. The infi­ nite dimensional aspects occur when forces that describe the motion depend on spatial variables, or on the history of the motion. In the case of spatially depen­ dent problems, the model equations are generally partial differential equations, and problems that depend on the past give rise to differential-delay equations. Because the nonlinearities occurring in thse equations need not be small, one needs good dynamical theories to understand the longtime behavior of solutions. Our basic objective in writing this book is to prepare an entree for scholars who are beginning their journey into the world of dynamical systems, especially in infinite dimensional spaces. In order to accomplish this, we start with the key concepts of a semiflow and a flow. As is well known, the basic elements of dynamical systems, such as the theory of attractors and other invariant sets, have their origins here.

During the past two decades representations of noncompact Lie groups and Lie algebras have been studied extensively, and their application to other branches of mathematics and to physical sciences has increased enormously. Several theorems which were proved in the abstract now carry definite mathematical and physical sig­ nificance. Several physical observations which were not understood before are now explained in terms of models based on new group-theoretical structures such as dy­ namical groups and Lie supergroups. The workshop was designed to bring together those mathematicians and mathematical physicists who are actively working in this broad spectrum of research and to provide them with the opportunity to present their recent results and to discuss the challenges facing them in the many problems that remain. The objective of the workshop was indeed well achieved. This book contains 31 lectures presented by invited participants attending the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas, during the week of January 3-8, 1993. The introductory article by the editors provides a brief review of the concepts underlying these lectures (cited by author [•]) and mentions some of their applications. The articles in the book are grouped under the following general headings: Lie groups and Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups, and Quantum groups, and are arranged in the order in which they are cited in the introductory article. Subject Matter The original title of this book was Tractatus Classico-Quantummechanicus, but it was pointed out to the author that this was rather grandiloquent. In any case, the book discusses certain topics in the interface between classical and quantum mechanics. Mathematically, one looks for similarities between Poisson algebras and symplectic geometry on the classical side, and operator algebras and Hilbert spaces on the quantum side. Physically, one tries to understand how a given quan­ tum system is related to its alleged classical counterpart (the classical limit), and vice versa (quantization). This monograph draws on two traditions: The algebraic formulation of quan­ tum mechanics and quantum field theory, and the geometric theory of classical mechanics. Since the former includes the geometry of state spaces, and even at the operator-algebraic level more and more submerges itself into noncommutative geometry, while the latter is formally part of the theory of Poisson algebras, one should take the words'algebraic'and'geometric'with a grain of salt! There are three central themes. The first is the relation between constructions involving observables on one side, and pure states on the other. Thus the reader will find a unified treatment of certain aspects of the theory of Poisson algebras, oper­ ator algebras, and their state spaces, which is based on this relationship.

Like many textbooks, the present one is the outgrowth of lecture courses, mainly given at the University of Vienna, Austria; on the occasion of the English edition, it may be mentioned that our first such lecture course was delivered by my late co­ author, Roman U. Sexl, during the fall and winter term 1967-68 in the USA-more precisely, at the University of Georgia (Athens). Since then, Particle Physics has seen spectacular revolutions; but its relativistic symmetry has never been shaken. On the other hand, new technological developments have enabled applications like the GPS (Global Positioning System) that, in a sense, brought Relativity to the domain of everyday use. The purpose of the lecture courses, and thus of the book, is to fill a gap that the authors feel exists between the way Relativity is presented in introductory courses on mechanics and/or electrodynamics on the one hand and the way relativistic symmetry is presented in particle physics and field theory courses on the other. The reason for the gap is a natural one: too many other themes have to be addressed in the introductory courses, and too many applications are impatiently waiting for their presentation in the particle and field theory courses.

This book contains a collection of articles provided by the participants of the SFB-workshop on C•-algebras, March 8 - March 12, 1999 which was held at the Sonderforschungsbereich'Geometrische Strukturen in der reinen Mathematik'of the University of Münster, Germany. The aim of the workshop was to bring together leading experts in the theory of C• -algebras with promising young researchers in the field, and to provide a stimulating atmosphere for discussions and interactions between the participants. There were 19 one-hour lectures on various topics like - classification of nuclear C• -algebras, - general K-theory for C• -algebras, - exact C• -algebras and exact groups, - C•-algebras associated to (infinite) matrices and C•-correspondences, - noncommutative prob ability theory, - deformation quantization, - group C• -algebras and the Baum-Connes conjecture, giving a broad overview of the latest developments in the field, and serving as a basis for discussions. We, the organizers of the workshop, were greatly pleased with the excellence of the lectures and so were led to the idea of publishing the proceedings of the conference. There are basically two kinds of contributions. On one side there are several articles giving surveys and overviews on new developments and im­ portant results of the theory, on the other side one finds original articles with interesting new results.

Davis [Dav81] Alluding to the Thomas gyration, this book presents the Theory of gy­ rogroups and gyrovector spaces, taking the reader to the immensity of hyper­ bolic geometry that lies beyond the Einstein special theory of relativity. Soon after its introduction by Einstein in 1905 [Ein05], special relativity theory (as named by Einstein ten years later) became overshadowed by the ap­ pearance of general relativity. Subsequently, the exposition of special relativity followed the lines laid down by Minkowski, in which the role of hyperbolic ge­ ometry is not emphasized. This can doubtlessly be explained by the strangeness and unfamiliarity of hyperbolic geometry [Bar98]. The aim of this book is to reverse the trend of neglecting the role of hy­ perbolic geometry in the special theory of relativity, initiated by Minkowski, by emphasizing the central role that hyperbolic geometry plays in the theory.

This monograph gives an overview of various classes of infinite-dimensional Lie groups and their applications in Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid dynamics, integrable systems, gauge theory, and complex geometry. While infinite-dimensional groups often exhibit very peculiar features, this book describes unifying geometric ideas of the theory and gives numerous illustrations and examples, ranging from the classification of the Virasoro coadjoint orbits to knot theory, from optimal mass transport to moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces. The text includes many exercises and open questions, and it is accessible to both students and researchers in Lie theory, geometry, and Hamiltonian systems.

The first part of this book gives a detailed, self-contained and mathematically rigorous exposition of classical conformal symmetry in n dimensions and its quantization in two dimensions. In particular, the conformal groups are determined and the appearance of the Virasoro algebra in the context of the quantization of two-dimensional conformal symmetry is explained via the classification of central extensions of Lie algebras and groups. The second part surveys some more advanced topics of conformal field theory, such as the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra, conformal symmetry within string theory, an axiomatic approach to Euclidean conformally covariant quantum field theory and a mathematical interpretation of the Verlinde formula in the context of moduli spaces of holomorphic vector bundles on a Riemann surface.The substantially revised and enlarged second edition makes in particular the second part of the book more self-contained and tutorial, with many more examples given. Furthermore, two new chapters on Wightman's axioms for quantum field theory and vertex algebras broaden the survey of advanced topics. An outlook making the connection with most recent developments has also been added.

Based on several recent courses given to mathematical physics students, this volume is an introduction to bundle theory with the aim to provide newcomers to the field with solid foundations in topological K-theory. A fundamental theme, emphasized in the book, centers around the gluing of local bundle data related to bundles into a global object. One renewed motivation for studying this subject, which has developed for almost 50 years in many directions, comes from quantum field theory, especially string theory, where topological invariants play an important role.

It was about four years ago that Springer-Verlag suggested that a revised edition in a single volume of my two-volume work may be worthwhile. I agreed enthusiastically but the project was delayed for many reasons, one of the most important of which was that I did not have at that time any clear idea as to how the revision was to be carried out. Eventually I decided to leave intact most ofthe original material, but make the current edition a little more up-to-date by adding, in the form of notes to the individual chapters, some recent references and occasional brief discussions of topics not treated in the original text. The only substantive change from the earlier work is in the treatment of projective geometry; Chapters II through V of the original Volume I have been condensed and streamlined into a single Chapter II. I wish to express my deep gratitude to Donald Babbitt for his generous advice that helped me in organizing this revision, and to Springer-Verlag for their patience and understanding that went beyond what one has a right to expect from a publisher. I suppose an author's feelings are always mixed when one of his books that is comparatively old is brought out once again.

In this volume readers will find for the first time a detailed account of the theory of symplectic reduction by stages, along with numerous illustrations of the theory. Special emphasis is given to group extensions, including a detailed discussion of the Euclidean group, the oscillator group, the Bott-Virasoro group and other groups of matrices. Ample background theory on symplectic reduction and cotangent bundle reduction in particular is provided. Novel features of the book are the inclusion of a systematic treatment of the cotangent bundle case, including the identification of cocycles with magnetic terms, as well as the general theory of singular reduction by stages.

A small conference was held in September 1986 to discuss new applications of elliptic functions and modular forms in algebraic topology, which had led to the introduction of elliptic genera and elliptic cohomology. The resulting papers range, fom these topics through to quantum field theory, with considerable attention to formal groups, homology and cohomology theories, and circle actions on spin manifolds. Ed. Witten's rich article on the index of the Dirac operator in loop space presents a mathematical treatment of his interpretation of elliptic genera in terms of quantum field theory. A short introductory article gives an account of the growth of this area prior to the conference.

This volume attempts to give a comprehensive discussion of the theory of operator algebras (C•-algebras and von Neumann algebras.) The volume is intended to serve two purposes: to record the standard theory in the Encyc- pedia of Mathematics, and to serve as an introduction and standard reference for the specialized volumes in the series on current research topics in the subject. Since there are already numerous excellent treatises on various aspects of thesubject,howdoesthisvolumemakeasigni?cantadditiontotheliterature, and how does it di?er from the other books in the subject? In short, why another book on operator algebras? The answer lies partly in the?rst paragraph above. More importantly, no other single reference covers all or even almost all of the material in this volume. I have tried to cover all of the main aspects of “standard” or “clas- cal” operator algebra theory; the goal has been to be, well, encyclopedic. Of course, in a subject as vast as this one, authors must make highly subjective judgments as to what to include and what to omit, as well as what level of detail to include, and I have been guided as much by my own interests and prejudices as by the needs of the authors of the more specialized volumes.

Ergodic theory is hard to study because it is based on measure theory, which is a technically difficult subject to master for ordinary students, especially for physics majors. Many of the examples are introduced from a different perspective than in other books and theoretical ideas can be gradually absorbed while doing computer experiments. Theoretically less prepared students can appreciate the deep theorems by doing various simulations. The computer experiments are simple but they have close ties with theoretical implications. Even the researchers in the field can benefit by checking their conjectures, which might have been regarded as unrealistic to be programmed easily, against numerical output using some of the ideas in the book. One last remark: The last chapter explains the relation between entropy and data compression, which belongs to information theory and not to ergodic theory. It will help students to gain an understanding of the digital technology that has shaped the modern information society.

'Introduction to Modern Number Theory'surveys from a unified point of view both the modern state and the trends of continuing development of various branches of number theory. Motivated by elementary problems, the central ideas of modern theories are exposed. Some topics covered include non-Abelian generalizations of class field theory, recursive computability and Diophantine equations, zeta- and L-functions. This substantially revised and expanded new edition contains several new sections, such as Wiles'proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, and relevant techniques coming from a synthesis of various theories. Moreover, the authors have added a part dedicated to arithmetical cohomology and noncommutative geometry, a report on point counts on varieties with many rational points, the recent polynomial time algorithm for primality testing, and some others subjects. From the 18th to the 30th August 2003, a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) was held in Cargèse, Corsica, France. Cargèse is a nice small village situated by the mediterranean sea and the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargese provides? a traditional place to organize Theoretical Physics Summer Schools and Workshops • in a closed and well equiped place. The ASI was an International Summer School on'Chaotic Dynamics and Transport in Classical and Quantum Systems'. The main goal of the school was to develop the mutual interaction between Physics and Mathematics concerning statistical properties of classical and quantum dynamical systems. Various experimental and numerical observations have shown new phenomena of chaotic and anomalous transport, fractal structures, chaos in physics accelerators and in cooled atoms inside atom-optics billiards, space-time chaos, fluctuations far from equilibrium, quantum decoherence etc. New theoretical methods have been developed in order to modelize and to understand these phenomena (volume preserving and ergodic dynamical systems, non-equilibrium statistical dynamics, fractional kinetics, coupled maps, space-time entropy, quantum dissipative processes etc). The school gathered a team of specialists from several horizons lecturing and discussing on the achievements, perspectives and open problems (both fundamental and applied).

Evidence that Einstein's addition is regulated by the Thomas precession has come to light, turning the notorious Thomas precession, previously considered the ugly duckling of special relativity theory, into the beautiful swan of gyrogroup and gyrovector space theory, where it has been extended by abstraction into an automorphism generator, called the Thomas gyration. The Thomas gyration, in turn, allows the introduction of vectors into hyperbolic geometry, where they are called gyrovectors, in such a way that Einstein's velocity additions turns out to be a gyrovector addition. Einstein's addition thus becomes a gyrocommutative, gyroassociative gyrogroup operation in the same way that ordinary vector addition is a commutative, associative group operation. Some gyrogroups of gyrovectors admit scalar multiplication, giving rise to gyrovector spaces in the same way that some groups of vectors that admit scalar multiplication give rise to vector spaces. Furthermore, gyrovector spaces form the setting for hyperbolic geometry in the same way that vector spaces form the setting for Euclidean geometry. In particular, the gyrovector space with gyrovector addition given by Einstein's (Möbius') addition forms the setting for the Beltrami (Poincaré) ball model of hyperbolic geometry. The gyrogroup-theoretic techniques developed in this book for use in relativity physics and in hyperbolic geometry allow one to solve old and new important problems in relativity physics. A case in point is Einstein's 1905 view of the Lorentz length contraction, which was contradicted in 1959 by Penrose, Terrell and others. The application of gyrogroup-theoretic techniques clearly tilt the balance in favor of Einstein.
