Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics (NESM), practically synonymous with time-dependent statistical mechanics (TDSM), is a beautiful and profound subject, vast in scope, diverse in applications, and indispensable in understanding the changing natural phenomena we encounter in the physical, chemical and biological world. This book presents the new discovery of the origin of turbulence from Navier–Stokes equations. The fully developed turbulence is found to be composed of singularities of flow field. The mechanisms of flow stability and turbulent transition are described using the energy gradient theory, which states all the flow instability and breakdown resulted from the gradient of the total mechanical energy normal to the flow direction. This approach is universal for flow instability in Newtonian flow and non-Newtonian flow. The theory has been used to solve several problems, such as plane and pipe Poiseuille flows, plane Couette flow, Taylor–Couette flow, flows in straight coaxial annulus, flows in curved pipes and ducts, thermal convection flow, viscoelastic flow, and magnet fluid flow, etc. The theory is in agreement with results from numerical simulations and experiments. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a unique technique for characterizing the response of materials and devices in the far-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Based on the measurement of transmitted or reflected ultra-short electromagnetic pulses and on a Fourier-transform of the recorded waveforms, THz-TDS permits fast and precise determination of the permittivity or permeability of materials over a wide bandwidth. Further afield, magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous energy release mechanism throughout the Universe, and modern satellites are now able to make in-situ measurements with kinetic scale resolution. To keep pace with these challenges and technological developments, a modern scientific discussion of plasma physics must enhance, and exploit, its ‘literacy'in kinetic theory. For example, accurate analytical calculations and computer simulations of kinetic instabilities are predicated on a knowledge of Vlasov–Maxwell equilibria as an initial condition. This book highlights new fundamental work on Vlasov–Maxwell equilibria, of potential interest to mathematicians and physicists alike. Possible applications involve two of the most significant magnetic structures known to confine plasma and store energy: current sheets and flux tubes.

This research monograph provides a brief overview of the authors'research in the area of ordered granular media over the last decade. The exposition covers one-dimensional homogeneous and dimer chains in great detail incorporating novel analytical tools and experimental results supporting the analytical and numerical studies. The proposed analytical tools have since been successfully implemented in studying two-dimensional dimers, granular dimers on on-site perturbations, solitary waves in Toda lattices to name a few. The second part of the monograph dwells on weakly coupled homogeneous granular chains from analytical, numerical and experimental perspective exploring the interesting phenomenon of Landau-Zener tunneling in granular media. The final part of the monograph provides a brief introduction to locally resonant acoustic metamaterials incorporating internal rotators and the resulting energy channeling mechanism in unit-cells and in one- and two-dimensional lattices. The monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the research in this interesting domain. However, this exposition is not all exhaustive with regard to equally exciting research by other researchers across the globe, but we provide an exhaustive list of references for the interested readers to further explore in this direction.

We study the solitons and nonlinear waves of phonon-polaritons and plasmon-polaritons with the frequencies in the terahertz and optical ranges in nonlinear media, and investigate the polariton spectrum in nonlinear dielectric media with the third order Kerr-type nonlinearity. We study the dependence of numbers of polariton spectrum branches on the intensity of the electromagnetic field, and demonstrate that the appearance of the new branches located in the polariton spectrum gap are caused by the dispersion of the third order dielectric susceptibility at the intensive electromagnetic field in the medium. The modulation instability of the new spectrum branch waves leads to the appearance of the spatial solitons or cnoidal (non-linear) waves. These scalar and vector phonon-polariton spatial solitons and cnoidal waves appear in the boundless dielectric medium. The polariton gets the mass that depends on the efficiency of the interaction of the electromagnetic field and medium. We investigate the linearly and circularly polarized nonlinear polariton waves in the self-focusing and self-defocusing media. The spatial soliton or cnoidal wave corresponds to one or several flat fluxes of the polaritons for the linearly polarized wave. The right or left circularly polarized polariton scalar wave corresponds to several polariton fluxes in the form of a filament bundle. In addition, we examine the instability of the linearly and circularly polarized polariton wave in the nonlinear dielectric medium. We consider the nonlinear models of generation of the surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) at the boundary of a nonmagnetic dielectric medium and a nonmagnetic metal. We show how the three-dimensional incident wave transforms to the fluxes of the SPPs at the first and second harmonics in the TM-mode. These “slow” and “fast” fluxes of the SPPs are formed at the first and second harmonics when their interaction is weak. The incoming SPP pulse transforms to the bright and dark solitons at the strong harmonic interaction. We consider the generation of the SPP pulses at the first and second harmonics of the carrier wave at the boundary of a uniaxial crystal and a non-magnetic metal. The SPP pulses at the first and second harmonics can arise in the form of the bright and dark solitons, or as the cnoidal waves, in accordance with the synchronism of velocity of the SPP pulses. We study the variation of the interaction efficiency and the changes of forms of the SPP pulses due to the exact or non-exact synchronism of their velocities, and show that the selection of crystal and metal pairs allows us to change the forms of the SPP pulses. We show how to use the non-linear waves and pulses for designing the optical devices such as the optical converter, controllable filter and all-optical logic gates.

This work aims to contribute to our understanding of the effects of noise and non-uniform interactions in populations of oscillatory units. In particular, we explore the collective dynamics in various extensions of the Kuramoto model. We develop a theoretical framework to study such noisy systems and we show through many examples that indeed new insights can be gained with our method. The first step is to coarse-grain the complex networks. The oscillatory units are then characterized solely by their individual quantities, so that identical units can be grouped together. The second step consists of the ansatz that in all these groups the distributions of the oscillators'phases follow time-dependent Gaussians. We apply this analytical two-step method to oscillator networks with correlations between coupling strengths and natural frequencies, to populations with mixed positive and negative coupling strengths, and to noise-driven active rotators, which can perform excitable dynamics. We calculate the rich phase diagrams that delineate the emergent rhythms. Extensive numerical simulations are performed to show both the validity and the limitations of our theoretical results.

Recent developments in air pollution modelling are explored as a series of contributions from researchers at the forefront of their field. The workshop'Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation-4'was held at the Uni­ versity ofTwente, July 18-20, 2001. DLES4is part of a series ofERCOFfAC workshops that originated at the University of Surrey in 1994. Over the years the DLES-series has grown into a major international venue focused on the development and application of direct and large-eddy simulation. Fundamental turbulence - and modeling issues but also elements from modem numerical analysis are at the heart of this field of interest, a fact which is clearly reflected by the contents of these proceedings. Modeling and simulation of complex flow phenomena forms a central ele­ ment in a large volume of scientific - and applied research. The problem of simulating turbulent flows and capturing their main dynamical features remains a highly motivating challenge. This three-day workshop focused on recent de­ velopments in numerical and physical modeling of complex flow phenomena concentrating on modem strategies in the field of direct and large-eddy simula­ tion. A major aim was to promote the exchange of ideas and problems from both industrial and academic background paying attention to physical, mathematical and engineering aspects.

Trajectory-based formalisms are an intuitively appealing way of describing quantum processes because they allow the use of'classical'concepts.
