This book covers correlation and combined disciplinary aspects implying the use of secondary metabolites (SMs) of different plant species for control and monitoring of environment states. Phytochemical management of ecological systems represents an integrative field aiming for determination/evaluation of environment conditions from qualitative and quantitative analysis of plant metabolites. Plants respond to environmental conditions through productions of secondary metabolites. SMs represent highly variable and sensitive phytocompounds because of their small produced amounts, high structural variability and diversified activities. These characteristics make variations of SMs in plants to be highly informative on environmental conditions, physiological states and biological interactions. Qualitative and quantitative variations of SMs in plants are subject to correlation analyses to highlight links between biotic/abiotic conditions and plant chemical patterns.

In agricultural lands, we should aim for a balance between productivity and conserving native species. We may wish to revegetate selected areas with local flora, or experiment with species from other areas. Species in similar latitudes between east and west, that have been isolated for some considerable time from each other, often have useful but untested properties that can be exploited. In southern Australia, trials in the exchange of species between east and west have shown that non-endemics can flourish, especially some Western Australian ornamentals and salt-tolerant species which have so far been tested in the east. Recognition of the more important plant species is fundamental to the management of livestock enterprises and conservation of natural resources in western New South Wales. A major reference work, Plants of Western New South Wales by G.M. Cunningham, W.E. Mulham, P.L. Milthorpe and J.H. Leigh, was published in 1981. That book has proved to be of enduring value to pastoralists and many others with an interest in the management of semi-arid and arid rangelands. The first edition of The Glove Box Guide to Plants of the NSW Rangelands, published in 1998, was produced in response to a need expressed by both landholders and agency staff for a plant identification booklet that included the common and important species, was easy to use, and portable enough to fit in the ‘glove box'or on the bike. It aimed to present the information most commonly requested by pastoralists about rangeland plants, much of it derived from Plants of Western New South Wales, and 127 of the more common and important species for pastoral management were included. The ‘Glove Box Guide'proved popular with both pastoralists and the general public, so much so that it has been reprinted to supply the continuing demand. The text is largely unchanged from the original. We hope that it will continue to be a source of useful information for those who manage or take pleasure in the rangelands of western NSW.

Horticulture has remained far behind in understanding of botanical principles. Recent phylogenetic (DNA-based) reorganization of higher plants has revolutionized taxonomic treatments of all biological entities, even when morphology does not completely agree with their organization. Areas with high agricultural potential include arid zones, which make up 43% of the world's total area. In these areas the scarce precipitation and the high salinity of the soils represent a limitation for the development of conventional agriculture. For this reason, it is essential to guide the efforts of research to generate agricultural technologies that allow us to optimize the productivity of those areas. Halophytes have a wide diversity of plant forms and have been regarded as a rich source of potential new crops. Next, the nutritional profile of four promising species of chenopodiaceae family are collected from saline areas of Iran were evaluted by standard methods. The nutrient content of four halophyte plants indicate that they have high nutritive and dietary values, so these medicinal plants can be used as a major source of minerals and natural nutrients in food and fodder, based on their crude protein, fat, fiber, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals in sufficient amount. The physiological mechanisms underlying the ability of halophytes to grow well under saline soils are explored. Additionally, several theories of growth stimulation mechanisms advocated in the past and presumed mechanisms of growth stimulation are discussed in the context of the latest reports. The authors go on to review the potential of halophytes for various uses in the Mediterranean area and assess how a knowledge of their cellular machinery can help to determine the best species and genotypes for their applied uses. Following this, the ancient and present-day uses of halophytes in Portugal are presented and discussed, focusing on their traditional uses and biological activities.
