This volume is devoted to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Professor Ruiyu Liu (1922-2012) of the Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao, China. Since 1949, Professor Liu had devoted his life to studying taxonomy, systematics, ecology, zoogeography and aquaculture and published a total of more than 210 papers and monographs. He described two new genera, fifty-two new species and one new subspecies, including not only crustaceans but also cnidarians, polychaetes and molluscs. In this volume forty of his friends and colleagues put together sixteen papers to honour Professor Liu, and named after him three new genera and eleven new species. This volume is dedicated to the memory of the eminent carcinologist Michael Türkay, of the Research Institute and Natural History Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is a tribute to his outstanding international contribution to the study of decapod crustaceans. An extensive account of Michael's life and achievements is presented, along with thirty-one scientific papers by 62 of his friends and colleagues from around the world. The book's focus is almost entirely on decapod crustaceans, and covers a variety of topics, including taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography, morphology, palaeontology, genetics, general biology and ecology. The influence of Bernard Dussart's contributions to limnology in general as well as to freshwater copepodology in particular can hardly be overestimated. From 1945 until his decease late 2008, he has devoted more than 60 years of his life to studying freshwater bodies and their inhabitants. Next to his 200+ scientific papers, his frequent travels brought him all over the world, where he invariably left an inheritage of enhanced interest in problems of freshwater biology and management. The contributions in this book show the progress of research on the Copepoda found in continental waters and in part continue along the lines B. Dussart has set out: a worthy tribute to one of the very nestors of copepodology of fresh waters.

This volume is devoted to the memory of the Dutch carcinologist Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (1921-2008) who dedicated his life to the taxonomy and systematics of Crustacea. His scientific career started in 1941 with his first publications and continued for 68 years in which he produced over 600 titles totalling almost 13000 pages describing more than 400 taxa new to science. In this volume his friends and colleagues pay tribute to his legacy. Included are an extensive biography and over 50 papers mainly dealing with systematic and taxonomic issues, which emanate from his knowledge and inspiration.

This volume is in honour of Danièle Guinot (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France), and was born out of our admiration for Danièle's immense contributions to her discipline. She has helped reawaken interest on the systematics of brachyuran decapods crustaceans, the true crabs. Furthermore, she has significantly helped to redefine the study of the complete evolutionary process in crabs. A total of 35 of her colleagues have contributed to this volume, submitting papers on those aspects of the Brachyura to which Danièle, herself, has significantly contributed – taxonomy, evolution, morphology, palaeontology and general biology of crabs. Deconstructing Dinosaurs takes a fresh look at the history of the German Tendaguru Expedition (1909–1913), using recently uncovered sources to reveal how Berlin's Natural History Museum appropriated and extracted 225 tonnes of dinosaur fossils from land belonging to modern-day Tanzania. It examines the colonial conditions under which the area's inhabitants located, excavated, and prepared the finds and carried them out of the country's interior to the coast. Once in Berlin, the fossils were transformed into valuable scientific assets and prize exhibits, foremost among them Giraffatitan brancai. Microlepidoptera of Europe: Depressariidae is the tenth volume in this series, providing descriptions and illustrations which will enable identification of all 192 species. For preparation more than 10000 specimens have been studied, including East Palearctic species. Barcodes were taken from nearly 3000 specimens. As a result, 28 species were described as new to science, 22 of these present in Europe. For the first time in a guide to species identification in a family of European Microlepidoptera traditional taxonomy based on morphology is backed up by molecular evidence. The last revision of the family which covered all Europe was published in 1910.

A number of very fine reviews have been written and published in various entomological and lepidopterological journals about this volume 4 of The Geometrid Moths of Europe on Perizomini and Eupitheciini. In The Geometrid Moths of Europe volume 2 on Sterrhinae, a number of difficult genera such as Cyclophora, Scopula and Idaea are covered. Especially Idaea with more than 100 species occuring in Europe, has caused a lot of problems to identify, but based on the many specimens illustrated on the 24 colour plates, the species of this genus can be identified much easier now. Apart from its largest species, the genus Idaea is illustrated in 1.5 times natural size. The remaining Sterrhinae are in natural size on the colour plates. On additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, their differential characters are pointed out with arrows. Three new species and three new subspecies are described. A new view for studying and understanding biological evolution emerges when the concepts of phylogenetic systematics and exaptation are combined. A new definition of macroevolution is created. Preadaptation is shown to be a null concept and its comparison with exaptation is shown to be inappropriate. This book criticizes the prevailing view, the adaptationist, microevolutionary outlook, which considers adaptation as being the exclusive or main evolutionary process responsible for vertebrates having occupied the terrestrial environment. The authors argue that the macroevolutionary processes are significantly more important to explain an improbable evolutionary event. Their research shows that macroevolutionary processes are the dominant factors involved in the origin of terrestriality. The 411 currently recognized and described species of tiger-moths of the Afrotropical Region are catalogued in this book. Fourteen new synonymies are established together with 44 new combinations and 8 reversions to original combinations of genus group and species group names. Six generic and 7 species group names are removed from synonymy and re-established as valid names. One name has been changed in status from species to subspecies, and another the reverse. The diagnostic features of each genus are presented and a brief summary is given of species that are probably wrongly placed generically. The male genitalia of type species of most genera are illustrated by half-tone photographs and the whole moth by colour photographs. Twenty genera have been removed from the Arctiidae and placed in the families Noctuidae, Lymantriidae or Geometridae. One species has been transferred to the Notodontidae.

In addition, condensed accounts of the lichens (590 taxa) and bryophytes (459 taxa) – groups in which the county is particularly rich – have been contributed by Francis Rose with Ken Sandell and Alan Crundwell respectively. As in Townsend's Flora of Hampshire (1884), there are introductory chapters on Structure and Geology; Climate; Habitats; and an up-to-date Comparison of Hampshire's Flora with some other southern Counties (including the Isle of Wight) – all by Francis Rose. There are also chapters on Conservation of the Flora (with a complete list of nature reserves) by Peter Brough and Paul Bowman; Some earlier Workers on the Hampshire Flora by David Allen; and Botanical Recording by Paul Bowman. The Flora ends with an extensive Bibliography and References and a fully comprehensive Index. The principal authors are all experienced Hampshire botanists with an intimate knowledge of its flora.

An Introduction, giving notes on Nomenclature, Classification and Conventions; and Terms and Abbreviations, is followed by a History of the Scientific Nomenclature of Lepidoptera. In the Systematic Section, the meanings of over 4000 names are given. The nomenclature is that of Kloet & Hincks (1972) with more recent amendments. The specific names (each preceded by the Bradley & Fletcher Log Book number) are explained, together with the names of the genera, families and suborders to which they belong, giving both Latin and Greek roots. Appendixes include People commemorated in the names of Lepidoptera; Geographical Names and Unresolved Names. References and Indexes complete the work.
