The automatic analysis of images and signals in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry is a challenging and demanding field. Signal-producing procedures by microscopes, spectrometers, and other sensors have found their way into wide fields of medicine, biotechnology, economy, and environmental analysis. With this arises the problem of the automatic mass analysis of signal information. Signal-interpreting systems which generate automatically the desired target statements from the signals are therefore of compelling necessity. The continuation of mass analyses on the basis of classical procedures leads to investments of proportions that are not feasible. New procedures and system architectures are therefore required. The scope of the International Conference on Mass Data Analysis of Images and Signals in Medicine, Biotechnology and Chemistry MDA (www.mda-signals.de) is to bring together researchers, practitioners, and industry people who are dealing with mass analysis of images and signals to present and discuss recent research in these fields. The goals of this workshop are to: Provide a forum for identifying important contributions and opportunities for research on mass data analysis on microscopic images Promote the systematic study of how to apply automatic image analysis and interpretation procedures to that field Show case applications of mass data analysis in biology, medicine, and chemistry Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): Techniques and developments of signal and image producing procedures Object matching and object tracking in microscopic and video microscopic images 1D, 2D, and 3D shape analysis and description

The pixelization paradigm states as a postulate that pixelization methods are rich and are worth exploring as far as possible. In fact, we think that the strength of these methods lies in their simplicity, in their high-density way of information representation property and in their compatibility with neurocognitive processes. • Simplicity, because pixelization belongs to two-dimensional information visualization methods and its main idea is identifying a “pixel” with an informational entity in order to translate a set of informational entities into an image. • High-density way of information representation property, firstly because pixelization representation contains a third dimension—each pixel's color—and secondly because pixelization is a “compact” (two-dimensional) way of representing information compared with linear one-dimensional representations (Ganascia, p.255). • Compatibility with neurocognitive processes, firstly because we are thr- dimensional beings and thus we are intrinsically better at grasping one- or two-dimensional data, and secondly because the cerebral cortex is typically a bi-dimensional structure where metaphorically the neurons can be assimilated to “pixels,” whose activity plays the role of color (Lévy, p.3). The pixelization paradigm may be studied along two related directions: pixelization and its implementation and pixelization and cognition. The first direction—pixelization and its implementation—may be divided into two parts: pixelization theory and pixelization application.

This book constitutes the First 3D Head and Neck Tumor Segmentation in PET/CT Challenge, HECKTOR 2020, which was held in conjunction with the 23rd International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2020, in Lima, Peru, in October 2020. The challenge took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The 2 full and 8 short papers presented together with an overview paper in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected form numerous submissions. This challenge aims to evaluate and compare the current state-of-the-art methods for automatic head and neck tumor segmentation. In the context of this challenge, a dataset of 204 delineated PET/CT images was made available for training as well as 53 PET/CT images for testing. Various deep learning methods were developed by the participants with excellent results.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Uncertainty for Safe Utilization of Machine Learning in Medical Imaging, UNSURE 2021, and the 6th International Workshop on Preterm, Perinatal and Paediatric Image Analysis, PIPPI 2021, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2021. The conference was planned to take place in Strasbourg, France, but was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.For UNSURE 2021, 13 papers from 18 submissions were accepted for publication. They focus on developing awareness and encouraging research in the field of uncertainty modelling to enable safe implementation of machine learning tools in the clinical world. PIPPI 2021 accepted 14 papers from the 18 submissions received. The workshop aims to bring together methods and experience from researchers and authors working on these younger cohorts and provides a forum for the open discussion of advanced image analysis approaches focused on the analysis of growth and development in the fetal, infant and paediatric period.
