This volume is based on the proceedings of the International Workshop on Dynamical Systems and their Applications in Biology held at the Canadian Coast Guard College on Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia, Canada). It presents a broad picture of the current research surrounding applications of dynamical systems in biology, particularly in population biology. The book contains 19 papers and includes articles on the qualitative and/or numerical analysis of models involving ordinary, partial, functional, and stochastic differential equations. Applications include epidemiology, population dynamics, and physiology. The material is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in ordinary differential equations and their applications in biology.

Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous (systematic) disease that exhibits high levels of robustness against various therapeutic interventions. Due to the complex, heterogeneous, and evolving nature of cancer, it is essential for a system-oriented view to be adopted in order to understand the pathogenic mechanism of cancer which will eventually lead to the drug discovery and treatment of patients. La monografía que presentamos es la segunda dedicada a los Chrysomelidae, una familia con mas de 37.000 especies descritas y probablemente muchas más aún por describir. En ella se tratan 13 especies pertenecientes a la subfamilia Eumolpinae y 163 de la subfamilia Chrysomelinae. Para poder identificar a estas especies se incluyen claves y se aportan descripciones, ilustraciones y las distribuciones geográficas de cada una de ellas. The cyanobacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that have adapted to colonise almost every environment on our planet. Ante la creciente evidencia de que la ingesta de compuestos bioactivos —también denominados ingredientes funcionales o nutracéuticos— puede reducir el riesgo de enfermar e incluso ser parte de la cura de diversas afecciones, su demanda mundial se ha incrementado. Existe, en consecuencia, un gran interés en la preparación y modificación de compuestos bioactivos mediante tecnologías compatibles con la industria alimentaria. En este contexto, la tecnología enzimática aporta la ventaja de que funciona en condiciones suaves, evita la formación de productos secundarios y está ampliamente aceptada en las legislaciones correspondientes como coadyuvantes de procesos. En este libro se presentan varios ejemplos de cómo se aplica la biotecnología enzimática a la obtención sostenible de ingredientes funcionales, o a su modificación para mejorar su biodisponibilidad, solubilidad, etc. Como parte de la sostenibilidad, se plantea el aprovechamiento de recursos naturales iberoamericanos poco explotados y especialmente de sus residuos. Igualmente se ilustra la producción y estabilización de enzimas útiles para este fin. Los trabajos recopilados en este libro proceden de reconocidos investigadores iberoamericanos, miembros de la Red ENZNUT, del Programa Iberoamericano de Ciencia y Tecnología (CYTED).

Developmental biology and tumour growth are two important areas of current research where mathematics increasingly provides powerful new techniques and insights. The unfolding complexity of living structures from egg to embryo gives rise to a number of difficult quantitative problems that are ripe for mathematical models and analysis. Understanding this early development process involves the study of pattern formation, which mathematicians view through the lens of dynamical systems.
