The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (lSOTT) held its 26th annual meeting from August 23-26, 1998, and met for the second time in Budapest. As captured in the design of the ISOTT'98 logo, the venue of the conference was the Budapest Hilton in the heart of the historic Castle District in Buda, across from Hungary's coronation church-the Matthias Church-and the fairy-tale-like Fisherman's Bastion; a special place with a historical touch situated atop the Castle Hill, from where participants enjoyed the spectacular panoramic views of Budapest exquisitely laid out on both sides of the Danube. In preparation for ISOTT'98, major emphasis was given to the application of informatics in collecting, presenting, and disseminating scientific and other information associated with the meeting. Electronic submission of the abstracts made it possible to publish the illustrated Abstracts on the ISOTT'98 Web Site well before the meeting. Following the meeting, an ISOTT'98 CD was published as a digital, searchable record of ISOTT'98. The scientific program was designed with the active participation of prospective attendees, in that priority and momentum was given to the topics selected by those visiting the Web Site. Poster and oral presentations were considered as equivalently effective formats, reflected by the fact that posters were on display throughout the meeting.

At this congress there were again numereous reports of progress in immunology. The new technologies are continuing to have an immense impact: gene isolation, mutation, transfection and expression, protein structure andpeptide synthesis, cell cloning, hybridization and monoclonal antibodies, CD serology, SCID and transgenic mice, modern immunomodulation and vaccines. A trmendous mass of data has accumulated over the last years. The reports are up-to-date and outstanding,to a degree no journal will ever achieve, and the results are presented in a concise and lucid way. This report will serve as a guideline for the years to came, because it is a treasure trove of explorations, making it exciting reading. This progress presents outstanding contributions. Immunology is exhibited at its best: an exciting research area and a rewarding subject to study for the benefit of mankind - today more than ever.

The present book attempts for the first time to provide into one volume a series of chapters prepared by invited experts on the struc­ ture of these fascinating macromolecules. A particular emphasis is placed on the molecular features of these highly active biomolecules in rela­ tion to their biological properties and mechanisms of action. The researchers in bacterial protein toxinology of my generation have had the privilege of witnessing over 40 years the tremen­ dous development of this field of biological sciences, particularly in the past decade.

Hypoxia is a constant threat throughout life. nd The 22 meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (LS. O. T. T.) of which this volume is the scientific proceedings, was held in Istanbul, Turkey on August 22-26, 1994. It was a historical occasion in that it was almost 200 years to the day that one of the founding fathers of oxygen research, Antoine Lavoisier, on May 8, 1794 found his early demise at the hands of the guillotine. This spirit of history set the tone of the conference and in the opening lecture the contribution that this part of the world has given to the understanding of oxygen transport to tissue was highlighted. In particular, the contribution of Galen of Pergamon (129-200) was discussed who for the first time demon­ strated that blood flowed through the arteries and whose view on the physiology of the circulation dominated the ancient world for well over a millennium. A forgotten chapter in the history of the circulation of the blood is the contribution made by Ibn al Nafis of Damascus (1210-1280) who for the first time described the importance of the pulmonary circulation by stating that all venous blood entering the right ventricle ofthe heart passes to the left ventricle, not through pores in the septum of the heart as had been postulated by Galen, but through the circulation of the lungs.

The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (IS OTT) was founded in 1973 as a scientific society providing a forum for bioengineers, basic scientists (physiologists, biochemists and physicists) and clinicians (including anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists, internists, surgeons and other specialists) to facilitate the exchange of scientific information among those interested in any aspect of the transport and/or utilization of oxygen in tissues. From the ranks of its members, many fundamental discoveries and inventions have been made involving the many aspects of oxygen transport and utilization by biological tissues. The ISOTT proceed­ ings, now in its 14th edition, has become a standard work in the field as witnessed by the inclusion in the Science Citation Index of all volumes published so far. The 19th ISOTT Meeting was held in Cura~ao from August 24th through August 30th, 1991. The Cura~ao Meeting attracted 145 registrants and 45 accompanying persons. The format originated by Dr. Ian Llngmuir in 1985, consisting of posters ac­ companied by an abbreviated oral summary, was again successfully handled with slight modifications. The meeting was introduced by 6 review lectures covering the whole field of oxygen transport from bioengineering, the problem of diffusion in lung, blood and tissue through pathology of oxygen uptake in the lung, oxygen supply dependency of the critically ill to artificial oxygen carriers. A special session dealt with oxygen sup­ ply under ambiant pressure changes.

Where do you begin to look for a recent, authoritative article on the diagnosis or management of a particular malignancy? The few general oncology textbooks are generally out of date. Single papers in specialized journals are informative but seldom comprehensive; these are more often preliminary reports on a very limited number of patients. Certain general journals frequently publish good indepth reviews of cancer topics, and published symposium lectures are often the best overviews available. Un­ fortunately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up-to-date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by dividing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

This work is concerned with a group of proteins which were originally consid­ ered to be an esoteric phenomenon but which have now been shown to play critical roles both in normal and stressed cells as well as being involved in a variety of human diseases. It is the purpose of this work to give a comprehen­ sive view of these proteins and their various aspects. After an introductory chapter providing an overview of these proteins, the work is divided into four main sections each of which deals with one important aspect of these proteins. Thus, the first section contains a series of chapters which describe individual stress proteins and their roles in particular biological phenomena. Evidently, the induction of these proteins by elevated tempera­ ture or other stresses is their defining feature and the second section of this book therefore considers the regulation of stress protein gene expression both by stressful stimuli such as elevated temperature or ischaemia and by non­ stressful stimuli such as cytokines.

Neuroscientists from various disciplines have given extraordinary attention to the role of neurotransmitters in the field of neuronal injury. This volume summarizes the original oral and poster contributions which were presented at the symposium,'The Role of Neurotransmitters in Brain Injury,'in Key West, Florida, between June 7-9, 1991. This symposium was the official Satellite of Brain-91, the Fifteenth International Symposium on Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, held in Miami the previous week. The two principal goals of the Key West satellite meeting were to document recent progress and, more importantly, to explore future directions for investigative studies of the role of neurotransmitters in brain injury. To achieve these goals we assembled participants from diverse scientific fields and specialties who brought their collective expertise to discussions on the importance of neurotransmitters in neuronal and vascular injury following brain ischemia, trauma, and epilepsy. Their contributions are reflected in this volume. An important section of this volume is devoted to the role of glutamate and glutamatergic receptors in the development of ischemic neuronal damage. Topics covered include the mechanisms of glutamate and other excitatory amino acids, and the role of underlying injury-induced release different glutamatergic receptors in brain injury, including the NMDA and the non-NMDA receptors. The involvement of other neurotransmitters in the process of ischemic brain injury is well established.
