This book presents the papers delivered at the Conference on Systems and Computer Science held at the University of Western Ontario in September 1965. The primary purposes of the Conference were the promotion of research and the development of the teaching of computer science in Canadian universities. The papers focus attention on some of the concepts of Computer Science as a new field of study and at the same time provide a background for scientists looking at the subject for the first time. The chief developments in computer science have been concerned with the'applied'rather than the'pure'areas of the field: numerical analysis, applied statistics and operations research, and data processing. But there is something more to computers than the physical components and this book represents an attempt to correct the imbalance between'applied'and'pure'by drawing attention to certain theoretical aspects of computer and information science. Among the topics discussed are the theory of finite and infinite automata, aspects of formal language theory, heuristic and non-heuristic approaches to theorem proving and the mathematical formulation of the theory of general systems. There are also references to the problems of machine design, to software systems including higher-level languages, to multiple control computer models and to applied systems. This collection of papers will appeal first to graduate students and professors in Computer Science. It will also be of interest to computer scientists in industry and in government and university research groups and to the scientific public interested in discovering some of the principal ingredients and directions of the computer and information sciences.

The annual meeting of the Royal Society of Canada for 1964 was held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where one hundred years previously the first steps towards the confederation of Canada had been taken. It was fitting that this meeting should be related to various developments -- political, economic, and scientific -- in Canada during the preceding one hundred years. The scientific section of the Society presented papers dealing with the history and development of the biological sciences in Canada. As presented in this volume the papers, which represent the fruits of much original research, make an important contribution to our knowledge of the development of scientific thought in Canada, and, by their historical treatment of scientific subjects, provide a means of bridging the gap between scientists and non-scientists. Léon Lortie, in'La Trame scientifique de l'histoire de Canada'(a paper specially prepared for inclusion here) looks back on the circumstances and conditions that encouraged a restricted biological research in Canada, and W. Kanye Lamb and Thomas W.M. Cameron examine biologists and biological research since 1864. Then, distinguished scientists present biographical accounts of four Canadian biologists who have influenced scientific research in this country: G.P. Holland appraises l'Abbé Léon Provancher, a systematic entomologist, in the context of his own time and the present; Jacques Rousseau and William G. Dore discuss George Lawson, whom they call'l'oublié de l'histoire de la science canadienne,'despite his important contributions to botanical studies in Canada; C.E. Dolman presents a study of the Reverend James Bovell, M.D., a theologian, philosopher, and physician who had a strong influence on the life and career of Sir William Osler; and T.H. Clark discusses Sir John William Dawson, an outstanding palaeontologist who was especially influential in furthering the progress of geological studies in Canada during the nineteenth century. The chairman of the session was the late Dr. E.G.D. Murray, whose Introduction is included here; a Preface is provided by the Editor of the volume, G.F.G. Stanley, who is Professor of History and Dean of Arts at Royal Military College, Kingston.

Mycologists have been searching for a better system of classification of Fungi Imperfecti than that based on mature morphology. This volume documents an intensive phase of that search. It is largely an account of the proceedings of the First International Specialists'Workshop Conference on Criteria and Terminology in the Classification of Fungi Imperfecti held at the Environmental Sciences Centre of the University of Calgary, Kananaskis, Alberta. The invited contributors, all mycologists of international reputation, have had long experience with Fungi Imperfecti. The first fifteen chapters follow the course of the conference: they reproduce the formal papers and the lively discussion which followed. Chapter 16 describes a new, experimental scheme of classification distilled from the conclusions reached at Kananaskis. Four chapters concerned with the application of this scheme and with a variety of techniques now being used to extend knowledge of the Fungi Imperfecti round out the volume. The text is illustrated throughout with numerous photographs and drawings. In editing the volume, Professor Kendrick has given the text continuity by inserting short linking passages. The result is a readable and very informative account which conveys the unique atmosphere of this important conference.

The expedition of Naval Lieutenant Lavrentiy Alekseyevich Zagoskin constitutes one of the most remarkable pages in the history of Russian exploration during the first half of the nineteenth century. It was the possibilities for the fur trade which gave the real impetus to this exploration of the interior of Alaska and to it we own a great deal for its encouragement of investigation which has benefited since the study of geography and anthropology. Lieutenant Zagoskin travelled into the depths of the Alaskan territory, and his reports were the earliest detailed accounts of the natural conditions of the country, and the distribution and life of the Indians and Eskimos. First published in Russia in 1847 and 1848, the account of Zagoskin's expedition still represents a substantial and important contribution to science, and has special importance today when western Alaska is receiving a great deal of attention from anthropologists. Made from a Russian edition of 1956, this translation will allow a new reading public to follow Lieutenant Zagoskin on his travels and see the peoples of the area drained by the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers at a time when their way of life was virtually unchanged by contact with Europeans. This translation makes available an outstanding source in the history of early scientific investigations in the North, and an absorbing personal document of a man's experiences in a hostile environment. An account of Zagoskin's life and works is also included. A very complete appendix containing a bibliography, a vocabulary of special, local and obsolete terms, and index of proper names, and a gazetteer concludes this volume.

This study is one of the first in the field of historical geography to be published in Canada. Written after exhaustive research, it uses a particular approach to the study of historical agricultural geography which concentrates on the use of basic distributional evidence for the description and interpretation of the changing character of any region through any period of time. By the analysis of over 1200 maps, some of which form part of the text of the book, Professor Clark studies agriculture as the dominant economic activity of Prince Edward Island and traces with remarkable clarity through the changing patterns of land culture throughout the province.The book begins with a description of the natural geography of the Island which, despite its small size, shows surprising variety. It goes on to prove the necessity for careful consideration of the background of habit and prejudice of groups of different origin when studying the changing geographies of land use.The settlement of the Island is traced from the time it was used as a summer campground by the Micmac Indians. Details of the arrival of the first Acadians, the transfer to British rule, and the subsequent influx of Scottish, Irish, Loyalist, and English stock are given together with evidence of the effect their coming had on the agriculture of the region. One hundred and fifty-five maps and sixteen tables to illustrate the distribution of population by area and origin, changes in kind and distribution of crops, census of livestock, etc., from the early eighteenth century to the present day, and from the days when the potato was unknown as a crop through the fur-farming era.The author presents this study as part of his life-work, a programme of research on the settlement overseas in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries of the people from the British Isles. He is descended from Prince Edward Island settlers and writes of the province from a background of personal knowledge of, and affection for, the land of his forbears.

Late Eighteenth Century European Scientists is an account of the remarkable progress made by European scientists at the close of the eighteenth century in the fields of chemistry, electricity, astronomy, and botany. Seven scientists are profiled: Jean Lamarck, Joseph Koelreuter, Antoine Lavoisier, Henry Cavendish, Alessandro Volta, James Watt, and William Herschel. In choosing these scientists, the book emphasizes the following considerations: the need to be representative, to show the contrast between those whose work is primarily experimental and those whose work is speculative, and to include a subject which shows the reaction of science on technology and of technology on society. March 16th, 1966, marked the jubilee of Commonwealth sponsored scientific research in Australia. In 1916 the Commonwealth Government set up an Advisory Council of Science and Industry. This was the culmination of an interest in scientific research which went back to the very beginning of federation and had been expressed by active attempts to bring science to the aid of agriculture. This book is an account of the developments which led up to the formation of the Advisory Council by the Hughes Government in 1916. It carries the story on to 1926, when a later Prime Minister, Mr S. M. Bruce, introduced the Bill to found the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. In those days there were vivid contrasts in the views of scientists, politicians and men of affairs as to how science could most effectively influence the nation's future.

These proceedings report the fifth seminar and general assembly of the Canadian Mathematical Congress, with the University of Montreal as host. The first such meeting was in 1945, and it too was in Montreal with McGill University as host. In the preface to the Proceedings of the first Congress assembly there is the following statement:'It is the hope and belief of many that this Congress will be the beginning of important mathematical developments in Canada.'Le present ouvrage constitue un compte rendu du huitième séminaire biennal et du cinquième congrès de la Société Mathématique du Canada tenus à l'Université de Montréal Durant l'été 1961. In the decade before 1900, the Italian mathematician Giuseppe Peano was one of the most original and influential pioneers of modern mathematical logic. He made significant contributions to the development of the foundations of mathematics and the axiomatic method (for example, his postulates for the natural numbers), dimension theory (including the space-filling curve), measure theory, vector analysis, differential equations, and the rigorization of analysis. Several of Peano's works have been translated into other languages; here for the first time is a generous selection of works translated into English. Fifteen articles, one booklet, and parts of two books and one monograph, published between 1883 and 1921, chosen with the interests of mathematicians and logicians in mind, are included. Each selection is preceded by an introductory note. The volume also contains a biographical sketch, a chronological list of Peano's publications (larger by one fifth than any previously published list), and a bibliography on the life and work of Peano. This selection will appeal especially to historians of mathematics and logic, but also to those mathematicians and logicians who wish to know more about how their subject came to be.

Late Seventeenth Century Scientists provides information on the lives and scientific works of scientists who were active in the latter half of the 17th century. This book discusses the outstanding achievements of physical science in the 17th century. The present age is sometimes called the Scientific Age. This does not imply that every member of the community is an expert scientist—far from it. It does mean, however, that the labours of the scientists have given the age certain features which influence the life of every citizen to some degree. Accordingly it is desirable that as many as possible should have some understanding of the scientists'work, of their aims, their point of view, and their methods. If we had a wishing-rug or some sort of spare-time car that could transport us at will to any place and time, we might visit the scientists of every age, see them at work, listen to their discussions, and even take a hand in the proceedings. The wishing-rug is not available but the literature of science will serve the purpose for anyone who will do the necessary searching, reading, and thinking. Unfortunately, some of that literature is decidedly inaccessible. To meet the difficulty this book has been written in the hope of bringing some of the most important passages of the literature of science within the reach of everyone. Every past of the vast edifice of science is necessarily the work of some human being, and most of us become more interested in the building, and are able to understand and appreciate it better when we know who were the architects and builders and when, how, and why they did their work. The story of science is a noble epic of the struggle of man from ignorance toward knowledge and wisdom and toward the mastery of nature and of himself. One purpose of science is to systematize experience, and a knowledge of the story of science has helped many in that process of organization. This book, therefore, offers the reader a cordial invitation to embark on a tour of visits with great scientists to learn from them the parts they played in the advancement of science and of the human race. Here is a treasure-house of fascinating information for all who are interested in the world around us, and the history of man's understanding of it.

The Ethereal Aether is a historical narrative of one of the great experiments in modern physical science. The fame of the 1887 Michelson-Morley aether-drift test on the relative motion of the earth and the luminiferous aether derives largely from the role it is popularly supposed to have played in the origins, and later in the justification, of Albert Einstein's first theory of relativity; its importance is its own. As a case history of the intermittent performance of an experiment in physical optics from 1880 to 1930 and of the men whose work it was, this study describes chronologically the conception, experimental design, first trials, repetitions, influence on physical theory, and eventual climax of the optical experiment. Michelson, Morley, and their colleague Miller were the prime actors in this half-century drama of confrontation between experimental and theoretical physics. The issue concerned the relative motion of “Spaceship Earth” and the Universe, as measured against the background of a luminiferous medium supposedly filling all interstellar space. At stake, it seemed, were the phenomena of astronomical aberration, the wave theory of light, and the Newtonian concepts of absolute space and time. James Clerk Maxwell's suggestion for a test of his electromagnetic theory was translated by Michelson into an experimental design in 1881, redesigned and reaffirmed as a null result with Morley in 1887, thereafter modified and partially repeated by Morley and Miller, finally completed in 1926 by Miller alone, then by Michelson's team again in the late 1920s. Meanwhile Helmholtz, Kelvin, Rayleigh, FitzGerald, Lodge, Larmor, Lorentz, and Poincaré—most of the great names in theoretical physics at the turn of the twentieth century—had wrestled with the anomaly presented by Michelson's experiment. As the relativity and quantum theories matured, wave-particle duality was accepted by a new generation of physicists. The aether-drift tests disproved the old and verified the new theories of light and electromagnetism. By 1930 they seemed to explain Einstein, relativity, and space-time. But in historical fact, the aether died only with its believers.

John Clark tells here, with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy, the story of the search for a power packaging which could be trusted to take man into space. Against a lot of the'laws of nature,'as they used to be called, it was a hazardous enterprise with no certainty of success or safety. It is the special virtue of this narrative that it is a primary historical document. John Clark actually helped develop explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. He worked with and knew dozens of his peers in an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. It is quite a story. The reader will find here that the storyteller is as much a part of the story as the equations he occasionally uses. History like this is made by a special sort of person, and that is surely one of the virtues of John Clark's narrative. It leaves no doubt in the reader's mind that experimenting with the basic energies is not for the faint of heart. And that a sense of humor helps when the conflict between matter and energy does not proceed according to the rules. Isaac Asimov's foreword is eloquent on this point:'There are, after all, some chemicals that explode shatteringly, some that flame ravenously, some that corrode hellishly, some that poison sneakily, and some that stink stenchily. As far as I know, though, only liquid rocket fuels have all these delightful properties combined into one...Well, John Clark worked with these miserable concoctions and survived all in one piece.
