- Abstract

- Abstract
This book explores the different conventional and biotechnological techniques for enhancing the productivity of industrial crops. The growth of the industrial crop sector has become a widespread global phenomenon that helps rural livelihoods and propels economic development. Contrary to staple crops, industrial crops are cultivated with the intention of being sold for a high profit. Industrial crops are a crucial component of plans to increase food security because they offer the required stability during periods of economic or climatic crises. In order to maintain their livelihood and food security, many farm households balance the advantages and disadvantages of producing food crops and industrial crops. Avoiding land-use rivalry with crops grown for food and feed production is crucial when considering growing industrial crops on agricultural soils. The past several years have seen a rise in the awareness of scholars and decision-makers regarding the immediate and long-term effects of climatic variables on economic, food security, social, and political results. In order to sustain food production with more climate-resilient crops for future generations, genetic variety, both natural and artificial, is crucial. Therefore, addressing the problem of finding a compromise between increasing crop production under a specific set of conditions and reducing the chance of crop failure when conditions change is important and difficult. An assortment of meteorological conditions is used to grow industrial crops. Many are subsistence farmers who run extremely tiny farms with very little agricultural input to produce products that can be sold. It is a significant problem to preserve the variety of these crops and handle all crop culture-related difficulties. By offering the knowledge required to minimize the dangers of industrial crop breeding through managing genetic diversity, the author believe that this book will primarily address a need that has not yet been met in this and other grower groups.

- Abstract
The book addresses the contribution of Intangible Cultural Heritage to the sustainable management of historic cities and towns. Through the unique, diverse, and dynamic illustrations from Asia, it provides insights into the interrelationships of intangible and tangible cultural attributes and their significance on the sustainability of these areas. Historic cities and towns, large and small, along with their natural and man-made environments have a distinct identity and embody the values of traditional urban cultures. Evolved by tangible built forms and intangible elements, as cultural practices and expressions- meanings and values attributed to them, they are in a state of continuous change. The built environment acts as a ‘place'or a ‘site'where most of these expressions are shaped. These areas are significant for their social cohesion and economic stronghold that dates back over generations and centuries. Over the years, there have been many theoretical discussions about the interrelationships of tangible and intangible but is challenging to manage in practice, especially in historic urban areas. There is a lack of understanding of the complexity and pervasiveness of intangible values and their direct relationship with the physical structure of the town/city. This book strives to address the various challenges, emphasising the intricate relationships between the tangible and intangible aspects of historic cities in the Asian context.

- Heavy metals--Toxicology
- Abstract
This edited book brings together a diverse group of environmental science, sustainability, and health researchers to address the challenges posed by global mass poisoning caused by heavy metals contamination of soil and plants. In recent years, contamination of the environment by heavy metals has become a major concern. Their multiple industrial, domestic, agricultural, medical, and technological applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment, raising concerns over their potential effects on human health and the environment. Owing to their toxic, non-degradable, and bio-accumulative nature, the health burden on the population has increased significantly. Heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and uranium do not play a significant role in metabolism in the human body and are thus toxic. Their exposure in high concentration can cause acute toxicity resulting in acute health conditions, which is easy to observe and regulate, while similar is not visible for immediate action when their exposure is in trace amounts over the years. Heavy metals enter in the food chain through consumption of plant material. A high concentration of heavy metals has been found to be harmful to vegetation. As the heavy metals concentration in plants increases, it adversely affects several biological parameters and eventually renders the soil barren. The book sheds light on this global environmental issue and proposes solutions to contamination through multi-disciplinary approaches and case studies from different parts of the world. This book is a valuable resource to students, academicians, researchers, and environmental professionals who are doing field work on heavy metals contamination throughout the world.

The eco-friendly remediation technologies for the degraded environment are indeed the “need of the hour”. Even though the regulatory mechanisms are in place to control the discharge of untreated contaminants into the natural environment, still, we could see a different picture; hence, remediation and restoration of the environment becomes an ardent requisite. The present-day fast pace of industrialization without proper disposal planning is impacting the water bodies adversely, generating the need for green management technologies. It is worth mentioning that these environment-friendly technologies are most cost-effective as well. The advancements in biotechnology have paved the way to mitigate the problem. The primary audience of this book are the students and researchers who are working in the field of toxicology and bioremediation of aquatic environments. We have primarily focused in this book on bioremediation of aquatic system toxicity, considering this as an environment-friendly system and having the least adverse effects. Hence this book aims to bring forward together on a single platform the latest research in aquatic resource management, which includes the discussions and discourses on the degradation and the effect and the remediation. This book includes a discussion on the different sources of contamination from industries or by the usage of commercial pesticides or even fertilizers. These contaminants, if discharged in their toxic form as effluent, cause harm to the aquatic systems and the subsoil and create the possibility of groundwater contamination. This book includes a discussion on the different routes of contamination and the food-chain transport possibilities of pesticide pollutants, which are very contemporary and required topics of research. It also includes relevant discussions on how to get rid of the toxicity.

- Abstract
This volume showcases how the climate change phenomena (CCP) have been causing multifaceted threats to humankind through increasing numbers of extreme events, affecting social, economic, and human development worldwide. The Global South is especially showcased in this contributory volume where adverse effects of CCP and related disasters impact majority of the population which depends on land and natural resources for their livelihoods. This book asserts that climate change and extreme events are potential threats to sustainable human development and micro spatial observations and analysis of impacts of CCP are vital for adopting resilience policies. This book, not enquiring why CCP is happening, embarks on a quest to showcase how best to respond to such phenomena through detailed and well-founded micro-spatial investigations on poor farmers, pastoralists, fishermen folk, migrant labours, slum dwellers, who are considered the most threatened by climate changes and weather shocks, based on possible disruptions in the production process. Scholarly contributions in this volume analyze how local and regional versions of CCP actively challenge the economies and livelihoods, question the social securities and good governance, and how such phenomena ultimately become a constraint in achieving sustainable development in the Global South. This volume accommodates many aspects of regional adaptation strategies in vulnerable areas and groups in different parts of the Global South to ensure stability and peacefulness. Academicians, research scholars, and readers inquisitive about the socio-economic dimensions of climate change in the Global South, will find the discussions across different chapters of this volume interesting.

- Abstract
This book captures the essence of one of the most remarkable journeys of a professional who prevailed over numerous challenges and adverse situations that appeared before him from nowhere and how he emerged victorious to be hailed at a global forum of the American Geophysical Union in 2008. The author reflects upon the circumstances and times in post-independent India that threw him out of the comforts of a well-to-do family into the real world. He traces back his entry into the field of earthquake science and dwells at length upon the scope and freedom it offered for innovative thinking in the field with limitless opportunities. Mishaps and accidents paved the way to remarkable discoveries and achievements including the creation of the world record for establishing and populating India's first permanent base station in Antarctica in a record time of one Antarctic summer despite having a near-fatal helicopter crash on 4th day after reaching Antarctica. Stressing the need to live safely with earthquakes as their short-term prediction is not a possibility yet, the author advocates a two-prong strategy of directly looking into the earthquake source region deep inside the earth and developing an earthquake-resilient society, simultaneously. He cites the success story of the Indian Tsunami Early Warning System that is operational in the Indian Ocean, today.
