Some of what they contained was wildly heretical and alchemically obsessed, hinting at a Newton altogether stranger and less palatable than the one enshrined in Westminster Abbey as the paragon of English rationality. These manuscripts had the potential to undermine not merely Newton's reputation, but that of the scientific method he embodied. Climate change is a big challenge to the mankind. It is well known that the earth's atmosphere is growing warmer due to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by human activity and extensive use of fossil fuels in every sphere of life which is leading to visible climate change across the globe and is also threatening to wipe out the human presence in many regions of the world. The 21st Conference of the Parties – COP21 - to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Paris in 2015 reaffirmed the target of keeping the rise in temperature below 2°C. Evolving Energy Models is about practice rather than theory, commencing with the information already possessed by the countries in climatically vulnerable systems such as agriculture, water resources, public health and disaster management, and aims at exploiting the existing synergies and intersecting themes. Advances in Renewable Energy Research comprises papers delivered at an international workshop by authors from Poland, Germany, Ukraine, China, Japan and Taiwan. The papers discussed the development of renewable energy technologies in certain countries, with special attention deviated to the conducted scientific research. The greatest attention was paid to the use of biomass, which uses resources that are readily-available in large quantities in all countries. The experience related to the use of biomass for energy generation was presented for certain countries, i.e. Germany and Japan as representatives of the most advanced countries in the field of energy generation from renewable sources, Taiwan and Poland, which have some experience in that area as well, and China and Ukraine, which have just started the introduction of renewable energy technologies. The greatest attention was devoted to the biogas production methods, i.e. chemical, biological, and mechanical pre-treatment methods, as well as enhancement of anaerobic fermentation and purifi cation of the biogas produced. -The development of solar (photovoltaic and thermal) methods and the use of heat pumps in residential buildings are also discussed, mostly with Polish experience asan example. Special attention is paid to research methods to be used for development of renewable energy technologies. This book covers the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for biofuel production as well as other industrial applications such as in biotechnology, paper and pulp, chemical and bioplastics. Lignocellulosic materials such as agricultural residues (e.g., wheat straw, sugarcane bagasse, corn stover), forest products (hardwood and softwood), and crops such as switchgrass and salix, are becoming a potent source for generating valuable products. Lignocellulosic Biomass Production and Industrial Applications describes the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for various applications. Although there have been numerous reports on lignocellulosic biomass for biofuel application, there have been very few other applications reported for lignocellulosic biomass-based biotechnology, chemicals and polymers. This book covers both application areas. Besides describing the various types of biofuel production, such as bioethanol, biobutanol, biodiesel and biogas from lignocellulosic biomass, it also presents various other lignocellulosic biomass biorefinery applications for the production of enzymes, chemicals, polymers, paper and bioplastics. Energy crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our century. The world currently invests more than $1 trillion per year in energy, much of it going toward the energy systems of the past instead of building the clean energy economies of the future. Effectively, the provision of energy should be such that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Investment in sustainable energy is a smart strategy for growing markets, improving competitiveness, and providing greater equity and opportunity. Sustainable energy has two key elements - renewable energy and energy efficiency. The promise of renewable energy can only be realised through significant R&D investments on technologies such as solar, biomass, wind, hydropower, geothermal power, ocean energy sources, solar-derived hydrogen fuel coupled with energy storage technologies necessary to operate them competitively. This book pieces together the jigsaw puzzle of Einstein's journey to discovering the special theory of relativity. Between 1902 and 1905, Einstein sat in the Patent Office and may have made calculations on old pieces of paper that were once patent drafts. One can imagine Einstein trying to hide from his boss, writing notes on small sheets of paper, and, according to reports, seeing to it that the small sheets of paper on which he was writing would vanish into his desk-drawer as soon as he heard footsteps approaching his door. He probably discarded many pieces of papers and calculations and flung them in the waste paper basket in the Patent Office. The end result was that Einstein published nothing regarding the special theory of relativity prior to 1905. For many years before 1905, he had been intensely concerned with the topic; in fact, he was busily working on the problem for seven or eight years prior to 1905. Unfortunately, there are no surviving notebooks and manuscripts, no notes and papers or other primary sources from this critical period to provide any information about the crucial steps that led Einstein to his great discovery. In May 1905, Henri Poincaré sent three letters to Hendrik Lorentz at the same time that Einstein wrote his famous May 1905 letter to Conrad Habicht, promising him four works, of which the fourth one, Relativity, was a rough draft at that point. In the May 1905 letters to Lorentz, Poincaré presented the basic equations of his 1905 “Dynamics of the Electron”, meaning that, at this point, Poincaré and Einstein both had drafts of papers relating to the principle of relativity. The book discusses Einstein's and Poincaré's creativity and the process by which their ideas developed.The book also explores the misunderstandings and paradoxes apparent in the theory of relativity, and unravels the subtleties and creativity of Einstein.

This paper conducts a review of the World Bank's financed operations and selected interventions by other institutions on household energy access in an attempt to examine success and failure factors to inform the new generation of upcoming interventions. First, the report provides a brief literature review to lay out the multidimensional challenge of an overwhelming reliance on solid fuels for cooking and heating. Second, it highlights how the Bank and selected governments and organizations have been dealing with this challenge. Third, it presents lessons learned to inform upcoming interventions. And finally, it indicates an outlook on the way forward. Eight main lessons emerged from this review: (i) a holistic approach to household energy issues is necessary; (ii) public awareness campaigns are prerequisites for successful interventions; (iii) local participation is fundamental; (iv) consumer fuel subsidies are not a good way of helping the poor; (v) both market-based and public support are relevant in the commercialization of improved stoves; (vi) the needs and preferences of stoves users should be given priority; (vii) durability of improved stoves is important for their successful dissemination; and (viii) with microfinance the poor can gradually afford an improved stove. The paper invites stakeholders to use the recent momentum aimed at providing clean cookstoves and fuels to the poor as an opportunity for action.

Conceptual progress in fundamental theoretical physics is linked with the search for the suitable mathematical structures that model the physical systems. Quantum field theory (QFT) has proven to be a rich source of ideas for mathematics for a long time. However, fundamental questions such as “What is a QFT?” did not have satisfactory mathematical answers, especially on spaces with arbitrary topology, fundamental for the formulation of perturbative string theory. This book contains a collection of papers highlighting the mathematical foundations of QFT and its relevance to perturbative string theory as well as the deep techniques that have been emerging in the last few years. This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2009 AMS Short Course on Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, held January 3–4, 2009, in Washington, D.C. Part II consists of four papers illustrating how QIS research is currently contributing to the development of new research directions in mathematics. The first paper illustrates how differential geometry can be a fundamental research tool for the development of compilers for quantum computers. The second paper gives a survey of many of the connections between quantum topology and quantum computation. The demand side should be regarded as a variable and not as fixed, as Gellings put it beautifully. With renewable energy, energy production becomes a variable source, and the demand has to adapt accordingly. The concept of DSM has been used in the USA since the 1980s but remains a novel subject in the European Union (EU). In 2009, the European Commission set the target to increase the capacities of DSM because only a tenth of the actual potential was used within the EU in 2014. A significant obstacle regarding DSM is the deviating estimation of DSM Potentials. There exist multiple studies, which estimate the potential in Germany, but due to the high deviations that exist between them, making it is dicult to estimate the real potential. For investments, this is an important measure, and it should have high accuracy. These deviations potentially come from a missing definition for DSM, which is often entangled with Demand Response (DR), sector coupling and load management. As no clear definition or distinction to other terms is visible, it seems necessary to define the term DSM. For that, chapter 2 analyses the initial objective, modern approach and relative terms of DSM. Eventually, this leads to a more precise distinction, which helps to calculate the DSM potential from Germany with a broad analysis of multiple studies. These studies are typically based on different assumptions and were conducted in different years, therefore having different annual electricity consumption and consequently di↵erent potentials (Ladwig, 2018). A normalisation with regard to the annual electricity consumption will be performed and followed by a distinction of the assumed restrictions. Here, it helps to look at the DSM groups, which can implement DSM measures and point out their individual restrictions and challenges that would limit their potential or increase the complexity of integration. Scientific modelling helps to estimate the effects of novel approaches on the electricity system. As DSM has many interdependencies and is very decentralised through many individual participants, different approaches for a framework of DSM will be analysed.
