Advances in nonlinear dynamics, especially modern multifractal cascade models, allow us to investigate the weather and climate at unprecedented levels of accuracy. Using new stochastic modeling and data analysis techniques, this book provides an overview of the nonclassical, multifractal statistics. By generalizing the classical turbulence laws, emergent higher-level laws of atmospheric dynamics are obtained and are empirically validated over time-scales of seconds to decades and length-scales of millimetres to the size of the planet. In generalizing the notion of scale, atmospheric complexity is reduced to a manageable scale-invariant hierarchy of processes, thus providing a new perspective for modeling and understanding the atmosphere. This synthesis of state-of-the-art data and nonlinear dynamics is systematically compared with other analyses and global circulation model outputs. Weather is a set of all the phenomena occurring in a given atmosphere at a given time. Weather Phenomena lie in the troposphere. Weather refers, generally, to day-to day temperature and precipitation activity. Whereas climate is the term for the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. When used without qualification, weather'is understood to be the weather of earth. Environmental science has been introduced as a course work at the undergraduate level by all the universities of higher studies. Traditionally, radiative transfer has been the domain of astrophysicists and climatologists. In nuclear technology one has been dealing with the ana- gous equations of neutron transport. In recent years, applications of radiative transferincombustionmachinedesignandinmedicinebecamemoreandmore important. In all these disciplines one uses the radiative transfer equation to model the formation of the radiation?eld and its propagation. For slabs and spheres e?ective algorithms for the solution of the transfer equation have been ava- able for quite some time. In addition, the analysis of the equation is quite well developed. Unfortunately, in many modern applications the approximation of a 1D geometry is no longer adequate and one has to consider the full 3D dependencies. This makes the modeling immensely more intricate. The main reasons for the di?culties result from the fact that not only the dimension of the geometric space has to be increased but one also has to employ two angle variables (instead of one) and very often one has to consider frequency coupling (due to motion or redistribution in spectral lines). In actual cal- lations this leads to extremely large matrices which, in addition, are usually badly conditioned and therefore require special care. Analytical solutions are not available except for very special cases. Although radiative transfer problems are interesting also from a ma- ematical point of view, mathematicians have largely neglected the transfer equation for a long time.

This book presents decade-long advances in atmospheric research in the Mackenzie River Basin in northern Canada, which encompasses environments representative of the coldest areas on Earth. Collaborative efforts by a team of about 100 scientists and engineers have yielded knowledge entirely transferable to other high latitude regions in America, Europe and Asia.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses precipitation data in many applications including hurricane forecasting. Currently, NOAA uses data collected from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite that was launched in 1997 by NASA in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. NASA is now making plans to launch the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission in 2013 to succeed TRMM, which was originally intended as a 3 to 5 year mission but has enough fuel to orbit until 2012. The GPM mission consists of a'core'research satellite flying with other'constellation'satellites to provide global precipitation data products at three-hour intervals. This book is the second in a 2-part series from the National Research Council on the future of rainfall measuring missions. The book recommends that NOAA begin its GPM mission preparations as soon as possible and that NOAA develop a strategic plan for the mission using TRMM experience as a guide. The first book in the series, Assessment of the Benefits of Extending the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (December 2004), recommended that the TRMM mission be extended as long as possible because of the quality, uniqueness, and many uses of its data. NASA has officially extended the TRMM mission until 2009.

The field of solar physics and solar--terrestrial relation, now called space weather, is evolving rapidly. As in the first edition, it is assumed that it is inevitable for the reader to get some basic knowledge in solar physics since the Sun is the main driver for space weather The term space weather itself has been gaining more and more attention during the past years as our society becomes more and more dependent on satellites, which are vulnerable to varying conditions in space. Space weather efforts and investigations are being made all over the world and more and more is known about the complex relations of processes on the Sun and the Earth and its space environment. The term space climate nowadays includes the long-term variations caused mainly by the Sun on the Earth and the interplanetary space. As in the first edition of the book, this edition also covers these topics but new chapters have been introduced, e. g., a chapter on real-time space weather forecasts and some main space weather data sources. All the chapters have updated information, taking into account the results of new satellite missions and telescopes. The book also includes a great amount of new literature (more than 340 original citations) so that the reader is able to go into more details, if required in the respective chapters.

This book presents the theory and applications of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. It is written for graduate students and researchers in the fields of meteorology and related sciences. The book begins with important basic definitions of the radiative transfer theory. It presents the hydrodynamic derivation of the radiative transfer equation and the principles of variance. The authors examine in detail various quasi-exact solutions of the radiative transfer equation and give a thorough treatment of the radiative perturbation theory. A rigorous treatment of Mie scattering is given, including Rayleigh scattering as a special case, and the important efficiency factors for extinction, scattering and absorption are derived. The fundamentals of remote sensing applications of radiative transfer are presented. Problems of varying degrees of difficulty are included at the end of each chapter, allowing readers to further their understanding of the materials covered in the book.

Agricultural production is highly dependent on weather, climate and water availability and is adversely affected by the weather and climate-related disasters. Droughts and natural disasters such as floods can result in crop failures, food insecurity, famine, loss of property and life, mass migration and negative national economic growth. It may not be possible to prevent the occurrence of these natural disasters, but the resultant disastrous effects can be reduced considerably through proper planning and effective preparation. Vulnerability associated with the hazards of natural disasters can be controlled to some extent by accurate and timely prediction and by taking counter-measures to reduce their impacts on agriculture.
