These proceedings are the result of the third international workshop on Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions, DIET III, which took place on Shelter Island, NY, May. 20-22, 1987. The work contained in this volume is an excellent summary of the current status of the field and should be a valuable reference text for both'seasoned'researchers and newcomers in the field of DIET. Based on the success of the meeting it seems clear that interest and enthusiasm in the field is strong. It is also apparent, from the many lively discussions during the meeting, that many unanswered questions (and controversies) remain to be solved. It was particularly pleasing to see many new participants from new and rapidly advancing fields, ranging from gas phase dynamics to semiconductor processing. The resulting cross-fertilization from these separate but related fields is playing an important role in helping us understand desorption processes at solid surfaces. In general, the topics covered during the course of the workshop over­ lapped those of both DIET I and DIET II. However, clear advances have been made and in general there is a much more sophisticated understand­ ing of the physics and chemistry of stimulated desorption. Of particular note in this regard is the gas phase research highlighted in this workshop by the work of Nenner et al., where new results indicate that in the gas phase, photodissociation can precede or compete strongly with autoion­ ization and other electronic relaxation pathways.

This book provides details of the basic frameworks and characteristics of processes occurring in electronically excited states of small molecules, complexes, and clusters. It discusses the perturbations in electronically excited valence states of molecules induced by intramolecular interaction and intermolecular interactions, which occur in collisions and optically populated, weakly bound complexes. Further, it describes the kinetics and mechanisms of photoprocesses in simple molecules and recombination accompanied by radiation. The book also offers information on general kinetics for gas-phase processes and basic theoretical frameworks for elementary processes. It features many useful problems, making it a valuable resource for students and researchers in molecular spectroscopy/molecular physics and chemical physics/physical chemistry.

This book compiles the accomplishments of the recent research project on photochemistry “Photosynergetics”, supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, aiming to develop and elucidate new methods and molecules leading to advanced utilization of photo-energies. Topics include photochemical responses induced by multiple excitation, multiphoton absorption, strong modulation of electronic states, developments of new photofunctional molecules, mesoscopic actuations induced by photoexcitation, and novel photoresponses in molecules and molecular assemblies. The authors stress that these approaches based on the synergetic interaction among many photons and many molecules enable the expansion of the accessibility to specific electronic states. As well, they explain how the development of reaction sequences and molecules/molecular assemblies ensure “additivity” and “integration” without loss of the photon energy, leading to new photoresponsive assemblies in meso- and macroscopic scales.

This book describes advanced research on the structures and photochemical properties of polyatomic molecules and molecular clusters having various functionalities under cold gas-phase conditions. Target molecules are crown ethers, polypeptides, large size protonated clusters, metal clusters, and other complex polyatomic molecules of special interest. A variety of advanced frequency and time-domain laser spectroscopic methods are applied. The book begins with the principle of an experimental setup for cold gas-phase molecules and various laser spectroscopic methods, followed by chapters on investigation of specific molecular systems. Through a molecular-level approach and analysis by quantum chemical calculation, it is possible to learn how atomic and molecular-level interactions (van der Waals, hydrogen-bonding, and others) control the specific properties of molecules and clusters. Those properties include molecular recognition, induced fitting, chirality, proton and hydrogen transfer, isomerization, and catalytic reaction. The information will be applicable to the design of new types of functional molecules and nanoparticles in the broad area that includes applied chemistry, drug delivery systems, and catalysts.

Chemical structure and bonding. The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements. It also focuses attention on new and developing areas of modern structural and theoretical chemistry such as nanostructures, molecular electronics, designed molecular solids, surfaces, metal clusters and supramolecular structures. Physical and spectroscopic techniques used to determine, examine and model structures fall within the purview of Structure and Bonding to the extent that the focus is on the scientific results obtained and not on specialist information concerning the techniques themselves. Issues associated with the development of bonding models and generalizations that illuminate the reactivity pathways and rates of chemical processes are also relevant. The individual volumes in the series are thematic. The goal of each volume is to give the reader, whether at a university or in industry, a comprehensive overview of an area where new insights are emerging that are of interest to a larger scientific audience.

The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Readership: research chemists at universities or in industry, graduate students.

This and its companion volumes 7,8, and 9 document the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in New Delhi, India, August 18-22, 1986 under the joint auspices of the Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. As this symposium was a landmark -- it represented the tenth anniversary of this series of symposia -- so it is very apropos to reflect on how these symposia have evolved to their present size and status. The pedigree of this series of symposia goes back to 1976 when the premier symposium in this series was held. Actually in 1976 it was a modest start and it was not possible at that time to gaze at the crystal ball and predict what would be the state of affairs in 1986. For historical purposes, it should be recorded here that the first symposium was held in Albany, NY, under the title'Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions'; the second symposium was christened'Solution Chemistry of Surfactants'and was held in Knoxville, TN, in 1978; the venue for the third symposium in 1980 was Potsdam, NY, and it was dubbed'International Symposium on Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects.

This book consists of two parts, the first dealing with dissipative structures and the second with the structure and physics of chaos. The first part was written by Y. Kuramoto and the second part by H. Mori. Throughout the book, emphasis is laid on fundamental concepts and methods rather than applications, which are too numerous to be treated here. Typical physical examples, however, including nonlinear forced oscilla­ tors, chemical reactions with diffusion, and Benard convection in horizontal fluid layers, are discussed explicitly. Our consideration of dissipative structures is based on a phenomenolog­ ical reduction theory in which universal aspects of the phenomena under consideration are emphasized, while the theory of chaos is developed to treat transport phenomena, such as the mixing and diffusion of chaotic orbits, from the viewpoint of the geometrical phase space structure of chaos. The title of the original, Japanese version of the book is Sanitsu Kozo to Kaosu (Dissipative Structures and Chaos). It is part of the Iwanami­ Koza Gendai no Butsurigaku (Iwanami Series on Modern Physics). The first Japanese edition was published in March 1994 and the second in August 1997. We are pleased that this book has been translated into English and that it can now have an audience outside of Japan. We would like to express our gratitude to Glenn Paquette for his English translation, which has made this book more understandable than the original in many respects.

The field of ultrafast spectroscopy of semiconductors and their nanostruc­ tures continues to be an active field of research. Exciting new developments have taken place since the first edition of this book was completed in 1995. This revised edition includes a discussion of many of these recent develop­ ments in the field. This is accomplished by adding a chapter on Recent De­ velopments at the end of the book. This approach was selected to provide a discussion of results while they are still relatively recent. Results published before the end of May 1998 were considered for inclusion in this book. The objective of this revised edition remains the same as before: to provide a co­ hesive discussion of the many diverse contributions of ultrafast spectrosco­ py to the field of semiconductors. Extensive cross-references are made to earlier chapters in order to accomplish this goal. The chapter on Recent Developments begins with a brief discussion of new lasers, new techniques of ultrafast spectroscopy and novel nanostruc­ tures. This is followed by a section on Coherent Spectroscopy where some of the most interesting recent developments have taken place. These include observation of quantum kinetic effects, effects that require going beyond the mean-field approach of the semiconductor Bloch equations, coherent control of populations and current in semiconductors, exciton-continuum interac­ tions, and many diverse aspects of coherent spectroscopy including studies of microcavities, Bragg structures, quantum dots and quantum wires.

Dynamical processes in which many timescales coexist are called dispersive. The rate coefficients for dispersive processes depend on time. In the case of a chemical reaction, the time dependence of the rate coefficient, k(t), termed the specific reaction rate, is rationalized in the following way. Reactions by their very nature have to disturb reactivity distributions of the reactants in condensed media, as the more reactive species are the first ones to disappear from the system. The extent of this disturbance depends on the ratio of the rates of reactions to the rate of internal rearrangements (mixing) in the system restoring the initial distribution in reactivity of reactants. If the rates of chemical reactions exceed the rates of internal rearrangements, then the initial distributions in reactant reactivity are not preserved during the course of reactions and the specific reaction rates depend on time. Otherwise the extent of disturbance is negligible and classical kinetics, with a constant specific reaction rate, k, termed the reaction rate constant, may be valid as an approximation. In condensed media dispersive dynamical processes are endemic and this is the first monograph devoted to these processes.

Understanding chemical reactivity has been the permanent concern of chemists from time immemorial. If we were able to understand it and express it quantitatively there would practically remain no unsolved mystery, and reactions would be fully predictable, with their products and rates and even side reactions. The beautiful developments of thermodynamics through the 19th century supplied us with the knowledge of the way a reactions progresses, and the statistical view initiated by Gibbs has progressively led to an unders­ tanding closer to the microscopic phenomena. But is was always evident to all that these advances still left our understanding of chemical reactivity far behind our empirical knowledge of the chemical reaction in its practically infinite variety. The advances of recent years in quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics, enhanced by the present availability of powerful and fast compu­ ters, are very fast changing this picture, and bringing us really close to a microscopic understanding of chemical equilibria, reaction rates, etc.... This is the reason why our Society encouraged a few years ago the initiative of Professor Savo Bratos who, with a group of French colleagues, prepared an impressive study on'Reactivite chimique en phase liquide', a prospective report which was jointly published by the Societe Fran

Besides its obvious destructive potential, military R&D also serves to protect human lives, equipment and facilities against the effects of weapons. Concepts have therefore been developed that improve safety of stationary and mobile facilities against pressure waves, thermal radiation and fire. Effective, fast fire extinguishing equipment has been designed for tank compartments and motors. Closed buildings are demolished and landmines are removed with gas and dust explosions. Stringent safety requirements have been developed for the production of ammunition and explosives. Military and related industries have accumulated a vast knowledge and sophisticated experience that are very valuable in a variety of civil applications. The knowledge is based on theoretical and experimental research work, the origin of which sometimes dates back many centuries. It has often been classified and therefore has remained unknown to the civilian population, until now.

This volume contains papers presented at the Eleventh International Conference on Ultrafast Phenomena held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, from July 12 to 17, 1998. The biannual Ultrafast Phenomena Conferences provide a forum for dis­ cussion of the latest advances in ultrafast optics and their applications in science and engineering. The Garmisch conference brought together a multidisciplinary group of 440 participants from 27 countries, including 127 students. The enthu­ siasm of this large number of Participants, the high quality of the papers they presented and the magnificent conference site resulted in a successful and pleasant conference. Progress was reported in the technology of generating ultrashort pulses, in­ cluding new techniques for improving laser-pulse duration, tunability over broad wavelength ranges, output power and peak intensity. Ultrafast spectroscopy con­ tinues to provide new insight into fundamental processes in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In addition to analyzing ultrafast phenomena, control of ultrafast dynamics now represents an important topic. Ultrafast concepts and tech­ niques are being applied in imaging and microscopy, high speed optoelectronics, mat~rial diagnostics and processing, reflecting the maturing of the field. In the past ten years the study of the mechanisms of chemical transformations on metal surfaces has advanced appreciably. Today complex reaction networks can be unraveled by combining several spectroscopies, derived principally from the practice of ultrahigh-vacuum surface physics. Of paramount importance in this field is the combination of mass spectrometric methods for the identification of reaction products with spectroscopies which help identify surface-bound reactive intermediates. This quasi-monograph highlights the progress in this field with studies which clearly exemplify such research and at the same time provide more general understanding of chemical reactivity at surfaces. This book was constructed to be a resource to all scientists interested in the chemical reactivity of metals, including those whose primary interest may lie in fields outside surface reactivity. The book is'intended to be an advanced case­ study text, not a'review'in the standard sense. Each chapter develops principles and illustrates the use of experimental methods. Consequently, more attention is given to experimentation than normally found in journal articles or review articles. My intent in organizing these chapters was to make this field accessible to professionals and graduate students in the fields of chemistry, material science, and physics. Even so, we hope that experts in the field of surface reactivity will also find these chapters informative. After the introduction (Chap. 1) the book consists of chapters on the mechanism of selective oxidation by silver (Chap. 2 by R.1. Madix and J.T.

INSTEAD OF A'FESTSCHRIFT'In June 1998 Hans Primas turned 70 years old. Although he himself is not fond of jubilees and although he likes to play the decimal system of numbers down as contingent, this is nevertheless a suitable occasion to reflect on the professional work of one of the rare distinguished contempo­ rary scientists who attach equal importance to experimental and theoretical and conceptual lines of research. Hans Primas'interests have covered an enormous range: methods and instruments for nuclear magnetic resonance, theoretical chemistry, C• - and W• -algebraic formulations of quantum me­ chanics, the measurement problem and its various implications, holism and realism in quantum theory, theory reduction, the work and personality of Wolfgang Pauli, as well as Jungian psychology. In many of these fields he provided important and original food for thought, in some cases going far beyond the everyday business in the scien­ tific world. As is the case with other scientists who are conceptually inno­ vative, Hans Primas is read more than he is quoted. His influence is due to his writings. Even with the current flood of publications, he still performs the miracle of having scientists eagerly awaiting his next publication.

The Sixth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy was held from May 23 to 28, 1993 in Berlin, Germany. It continued the series of biennial conferences initiated in 1982 by Prof. George Atkinson (University of Arizona) at Lake Placid, USA, followed by conferences which were chaired by Prof. Alfred Laubereau (University of Bayreuth) and Dr. Manfred Stockburger (Max-Planck-Institut, G6ttingen) at Bayreuth-Bischofsgrtin, Germany, in 1985, by Prof. Joop D.W. Van Voorst (University of Amsterdam) at Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in 1987, Prof. Thomas G. Spiro (Princeton University) at Princeton, USA, in 1989, and by Prof. Hiroaki Takahashi (Waseda University) at Tokyo, Japan, in 1991. The Berlin conference attracted 120 participants from 19 different countries, representing the most active scientific groups of the world in this field. Since 1982 the field has benefited from the development of lasers with shorter pulses and of reliable tunable light sources in the infrared. Now, the main activities are focused on the primary photo-induced processes and their excited-state dynamics and on detailed investigations in photochemistry and photobiology. The high quality of the contributions given at this conference is reflected in this proceedings volume and will provide all scientists interested in this field with current state-of-the-art results.

This is the second volume of a comprehensive two-volume treatise on superconductivity which represents the first such publication since the earlier widely acclaimed books by R. Parks. It systematically reviews the basic physics and recent advances in the field. Leading researchers describe the state-of-the-art in conventional phonon-induced superconductivity, high-Tc superconductivity, and in novel superconductivity, including triplet pairing in the ruthenates. The second volume is largely concerned with novel superconductors, such as heavy-fermion metals and organic materials, and also includes granular superconductors. Important new results on current problems are presented in a manner designed to stimulate further research. Numerous illustrations, diagrams and tables make this book especially useful as a reference work for students, teachers and researchers.

The classical view on polymer crystallization basically focused on the expla- tion of a few macroscopically observable parameters like the thickness of the resulting lamellar structure and the corresponding growth rates. However, the emerging paradigm for the description of chain crystals is too simple and cannot account for the complex non-equilibrium processes responsible for structure f- mation on various levels, ranging from the nanometer up to the millimeter scale. This complexity detected by several novel experimental results led to a renewed interest in this ”old” topic of polymer crystallization. These new?ndings c- cern the early stages of the crystallization process, crystal formation in con?ned geometries like ultra-thin?lms and the competition between (micro)phase s- aration and crystallization in copolymers and blends. In particular, high spatial resolution techniques such as atomic force microscopy provided deeper insight into the molecular organization of crystallizable polymers. Computer simu- tions based on microscopic processes were used to improve our understanding of how polymer crystals are nucleated and how they grow. New ideas emerged about possible multistage pathways which are followed during the formation of polymer lamellae. The importance and the consequences of the non-equilibrium character of polymer crystals got signi?cantly more attention. Links and ana- gies to growth phenomena and pattern formation in general are being developed. However, these ideas are still subject of intensive and controversial discussions.
