This volume contains extended abstracts of the 10 plenary lectures, 27 invited symposium lectures and ap- proximately 300 contributed papers that were presented at the 25th Congress Ampère. The contributions cover the full range of magnetic resonance and radiospectroscopy and their applications in physics, chemical physics, medicine and biology. Advanced NMR and ESR techniques are treated, as are their applications to novel materials.

EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications presents methods and applications of modern EPR for the study of free radical processes in solids, which so far are only available in the journal literature. The first part of the book, covering trends in methods, contains experimentally oriented chapters on continuous wave and pulsed EPR techniques and special methods involving muon magnetic resonance and optical detection and theory for dynamic studies. New simulation schemes, including the influence of dynamics, are presented as well as advances in the calculation of hyperfine and electronic g-tensors. The second part of the book presents applications involving studies of radiation and photo-induced inorganic and organic radicals in inert matrices, including novel results of quantum effects in small radicals. High-spin molecules and complexes are also considered as well as radical processes in photosynthesis. Recent advances in EPR dosimetry are summarized.

The Proceedings in this volume are a refereed selection of presentations from The Third Asia-Pacific EPR/ESR Symposium (APES'01), held in Kobe, Japan from October 29 to November 1, 2001. Participants from 20 countries from Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America presented 210 papers, of which 132 are included here.These Proceedings are also a blueprint for development of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) / electron spin resonance (ESR) in the Asia-Pacific region in the 21st century. The Symposium reflected a variety of research fields developed over half a century and focuses especially on the most recent developments, such as high-field and high-frequency EPR, which are envisaged to be further developed and applied to various fields in the 21st century.All sessions consisted of Plenary, Invited and Contributed presentations. The Plenary presentations aimed at summarizing the overall developments. Invited presentations, reviewing the most recent developments, and Contributed ones, dealing with original research recently carried out in the EPR/ESR area, were given in one of three parallel sessions. The unique research works presented cover various fields and reflect the existing diversity of applications of the EPR/ESR techniques.
