This book presents comprehensive accounts of the chemistry revolving around the sulphonamides. Sulfonamides are widely present in various drugs as a functional group and are a manmade synthetic drug. Hence, their extended research is a prerequisite for every practitioner of organic chemistry. Chapter 1 introduces the synthesis, reactivity, acidity, and pharmaceutical properties of the sulphonamides. It highlights the synthesis of biologically active sulphonamides, the study of their biological activity by QSAR method, and their medical applications. Chapter 2 deals with the classification of sulphonamides (i.e. acyclic and cyclic) and their structural activity relationship. It also describes the application of sulphonamides in pharmaceuticals as antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-malarial agents. Chapter 3 reviews the synthetic attempts towards sulphonamide synthesis by employing the fixation of sulphur-dioxides. This book is concerned with the synthetic aspects of oxidation reactions involving metal compounds. which are readily available or easy to prepare. The sequence followed in the chapters is as follows: a general introduction. a limited treatment of reaction mechanisms to serve as a basis for synthesis. and scope and limitations of the oxidant system. mostly in terms of substrate and product classes. Finally, at the end of each chapter. representative synthetic procedures are given together with relevant experimental considerations. A general table is included as an appendix. This contains substrate classes and resulting product classes, referring to the oxidative procedures in the chapters. As a result of the pioneering efforts of Eigen, de Maeyer, Norrish and Porter, the kinetics of fast reactions in solution can now be studied using chemical relaxation methods, as well as many other fast reactions techniques. These methods have been applied successfully in many branches of the natural sciences. The simultaneous growth in the number of investiga­ tors and the diversity of their research interests has inevitably led to communication problems. The purpose of the NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled'New Applications of Chemical Relaxation Spectrometry and Other Fast Reaction Methods in Solution', was to create a forum so that research scientists working in different areas concerned with fast reactions could interact. This meeting was held at the Llandinam Building, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from September 10th-20th, 1978. In addition to lectures on techniques and theory, two days of the NATO Advanced Study Institute, were spent discussing the current state of the art in this field. In the late 1980s, Peptide Societies were established in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and more recently, in the Asian and the Pacific Rim regions including Australia, China, and Korea. At the time of the establishment of the American, European and Japanese Peptide Societies, the International Liaison Organizing Committee representing these Peptide Societies, along with the Australian Peptide Society, began discussions for holding international confer ences which would supercede or be held in lieu of the numerous individual meetings, held by the peptide societies of each individual country or region. The representative of the Chinese Peptide Society participated in these discus sion in the International Liaison Organizing Committee at the meeting of the American Peptide Symposium in Nashville, in June 1997. After lengthy discus sions over several years, we agreed to organize and host the International Peptide Symposium in Japan. The First International Peptide Symposium (IPS'97) was held on November 30–December 5, 1997, in Kyoto, and was co sponsored by four Peptide Societies. The attendance at this Symposium was 550 participants, including representatives from 32 different countries. We were very pleased with this outcome and anticipate an even larger attendance for forthcoming Symposia in future years. The revolution and advances in science and technology during the past two decades has caused traditional peptide chemistry to expand to peptide science, spreading from physical science to biology, pharmacology, and medicine.

In the years since the publication of Atherton and Sheppard's volume, the technique of Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis has matured considerably and is now the standard approach for the routine production of peptides. The basic problems at the time of publication of this earlier work have now for the most part, been solved. As a result, innovators in the field have focussed their efforts to develop methodologies and chemistry for the synthesis of more complex structures. The focus of this new volume is much broader, and covers the essential procedures for the production of linear peptides and more advanced techniques for preparing cyclic, side-chain modified, phospho- and glycopeptides. Many other methods also deserving attention have been included: convergent peptide synthesis; peptide-protein conjugation; chemoselective ligation; and chemoselective purification. The difficult preparation of cysteine and methionine-containing peptides is also covered, as well as methods for overcoming aggregation during peptide chain assembly. The features of this book which will be of special interest to academic organic chemists are the introduction (Chapter 1), which presents a short course on the concepts and language of heterogeneous catalysis, covers organic reaction mechanisms of hydrogenation (Chapter 2), hydrogenolysis (Chapter 4), and oxidation (Chapter 6), a presents problems and solutions specific for running heterogeneous catalytic organic reactions in solution. These materials can supplement advanced chemistry courses. Most synthetic organic chemists use a variety of'protecting groups'which they attach to functional groups (reactive groups of atoms) while some reaction is being conducted on another part of the molecule. These protecting groups prevent reactions of the functional groups during other reactions and are removed later by a heterogeneous catalytic method called hydrogenolysis. One unique feature of this book, not found in other books on catalysis, is an exhaustive chapter (Chapter 4) on hydrogenolysis, which is dredged from the recent synthetic literature published by modern organic chemists. Academic organic chemists should find this chapter extremely useful and may wish to adopt the book as a supplement for advanced organic chemistry courses designed for seniors and for graduate students. It will also be useful for professors and their research groups engaged in synthetic organic chemistry.
