The Aqedah, i.e., the story of the'binding'of Isaac by Abraham, is a core text in all three Abrahamic religions and has been widely discussed in Judaism, Christianity and Islam for centuries. It still represents an intellectual, moral, and spiritual challenge for anyone who claims to be able to link morality and faith in God in a reasonably comprehensible way. The contributions in this anthology address this challenge from philosophical, theological and literary perspectives, by considering exemplary problems, epochs and authors pertaining to all three Abrahamic religions. The first part contains seven contributions exploring the epistemic and/or philosophical dimensions of the Aqedah. The second part contains nine essays on the (history of the) interpretation of the Aqedah from Israelite/Jewish, Christian and Islamic perspectives. The three texts in the third and final part discuss narratological issues and reflections of the problem within modern Hebrew literature. The volume complements and expands the existing scholarship on the subject, above all through its consistently interreligious approach and the inclusion of current philosophical and literary sources and debates.

The Shephelah borderlands in the southwestern region of Iron Age Israel (ca. 1200-586 BCE) are one of the most intensely excavated areas in the world, a complex social-political place standing between the central highlands and the coastal home of the so-called biblical'Philistines.'Yet the lives of these people on the margins of ancient Israel are lost to us today, left only in the fragments of archaeological remains and in the Bible's entangled representations of the proximate Other. In Scribal Representations and Social Landscapes of the Iron Age Shephelah, Mahri Leonard-Fleckman delves into how the Other is created and fashioned in ancient witnesses to these regions by analyzing identity in the Iron Age Shephelah. Focusing on two contemporary archaeological sites with plausible ancient connections, Tel Batash (ancient Timnah) and Tell es-Safi (ancient Gath), she journeys through texts and archaeology that bear witness to the social and political complexities of the region. Significantly, she presents irresolution as a practice for scholars of the Hebrew Bible and the ancient Levant and illustrates how resisting conclusions can be an asset to investigating the distant past. Along the way, she advances new hypotheses that illuminate biblical passages describing individuals and communities from the regionâsuch as the stereotypical Philistines, Samson, Tamar, Delilah, and others. Prophecy in the Hebrew Bible (“Old Testament”) has long been regarded as fundamentally different from the divinatory methods of ancient pagans: while the pagans sought out and solicited messages from the gods, the Hebrew prophets received revelation spontaneously, at the initiative of Israel's deity. The trouble with this dichotomy between solicited and spontaneous revelation is that it overlooks or misreads a number of ancient sources, and it obscures the similarities between Hebrew and other societies of the ancient Middle East. In this book, Ryan D. Schroeder re-examines the evidence for prophecy both in the Hebrew Bible and in documents excavated in Israel/Palestine, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq since the late nineteenth century. He shows that prophecies were regularly solicited across ancient West Asia. Moreover, the spontaneity of Israelite revelation is largely a mirage produced by ancient Hebrew scribes and reinforced by modern scholars intent on establishing the uniqueness and superiority of “biblical” religion.

The volume contains the edited papers presented at the 10th international conference of the Société d'Études Samaritaines held in Budapest in 2022. Sefer Brantshpigl is an important Yiddish religious/ethical work first published in Cracow, 1596. It was reprinted six more times into the beginning of the eighteenth century and is an important source for the social and religious life of Central/East European Jewry in the Early Modern period. This volume is the first complete translation of this text into English with annotations and scholarly introduction. The author, Moshe Henochs Altschul-Yerushalmi was a member of what has become to be known as the'secondary intelligentsia.'Little is known about his life, other than that he lived in Prague. His son, Henoch Altschul, was the Shamash of the Jewish community of Prague from 1603–1633. He examined all aspects of Jewish social and religious life in seventy-six chapters. Each chapter discusses a specific topic. Not only does he describe what is good and critiques what he finds to be lacking, but he buttresses his arguments with citations from the whole range of rabbinic literature. One aspect that is particularly interesting is his citation of kabbalistic sources in his arguments. He cites kabbalistic sources more than sixty times and even devotes a whole chapter to the kabbalistic night ritual of Tikkun Hazot.

Shelby Shapiro focuses on two women's magazines and the women's pages in three daily newspapers, from 1913, when the first Yiddish women's magazine appeared, until 1925, when the Immigration Act of 1924 took effect. Shapiro demonstrates how newspaper editors and publishers sought to shape identity in line with their own religious or political tendencies in this new environment, where immigrants faced a broad horizon of possibilities for shaping or reshaping their identities in the face of new possibilities and constraints. External constraints included the economic situation of the immigrants, varying degrees of antisemitism within American society, while internal constraints included the variable power of traditions and beliefs brought with them from the Old World. Words to the Wives studies how publications sought to shape the direction of Eastern European Jewish immigrant women's acculturation.

Tractate Gittin of the Mishnah is located in the Order of Women and discusses divorce proceedings. This book is about ways in which the land of Israel, the homeland of the most paradigmatic of all diasporas, was envisioned in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the literature of the sages. It is about the Land according to the redefined Judaism that emerged in the centuries following the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE. This Judaism replaced the temple cult with Torah study - a study that pertained in part to that very temple cult, that became a portable homeland, and that reconfigured the Land.

The Babylonian Talmud is a product of late antique rabbinical discourse and debate. It is an immense, complex, multi-volume work divided by topics into tractates which are written in a mixture of Hebrew and Aramaic. Tractate Nazir deals with a person (male or female) who basically assumes three abstentions for a defined period of time: no wine or product of the grapevine, no cutting of bodily hair, and no contact with a human corpse. The practice itself is controversial within Judaism. Nonetheless, virtually every conceivable factor involved in a vow to be a nazir is debated by the rabbis in this tractate and in great detail. Two millennia ago, the Jewish priest-turned-general Flavius Josephus, captured by the emperor Vespasian in the middle of the Roman-Jewish War (66–70 CE), spent the last decades of his life in Rome writing several historiographical works in Greek. Josephus was eagerly read and used by Christian thinkers, but eventually his writings became the basis for the early-10th century Hebrew text called Sefer Yosippon, reintegrating Josephus into the Jewish tradition. Parce qu'il y a des empreintes de Jérémie dans les écrits de Paul et qu'elles sont régulièrement considérées avec scepticisme, j'ai choisi d'étudier l'usage rhétorique potentiel que fait l'Apôtre de ces éléments. Me concentrant sur des extraits significatifs des Lettres aux Corinthiens, j'ai analysé avec méthode différents types de relations intertextuelles, allant de la citation explicite (1Co 1,31) au simple écho (2Co 10,8 ; 13,10). D'où il ressort que Paul cherche moins à utiliser ces éléments jérémiens comme des preuves techniques (sauf en 1Co 1,31) ou à déployer une théologie de l'accomplissement des Écritures qu'à susciter une ambiance (ou un'monde', selon la terminologie phénoménologique), à l'appui de son propos. C'est un nouveau regard qui est posé sur le lien entre Paul et Jérémie, permettant aussi de clarifier certains passages de ses lettres dont la complexité est reconnue.

In this volume of collected essays, Adela Yarbro Collins provides a wide-reaching insight into her work on the Apocalypse that spanned her professional career from 1973 to 2021. Counter-hagiography and counter-biography besmirch foundational figures held dear by different religious, political, or social groups. Such phenomena figure prominently in the history of religion and conflicts. For example, what we know of the Mazdakite revolution in pre-Islamic Iran/Iraq comes from revilers. The anti-Judaic polemicist from ninth-century Afghanistan and Iraq, Hiwi (“Snake”), was actually called Ḥəyyāwī (still a name among Iraqi Jews). The reputation of the great Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) thinker Moses Mendelssohn was damaged among the Orthodox by how Haskalah extremists portrayed him in their image. In 1869, a Genoan politician, Cesare Cabella, fulminated against Esther and Mordecai. In the Letter of Haman in rabbinic homiletics, Jews parodized hostile representations of their sacred history. Gerson Rosenzweig parroted in his 1892 talmudic-style Tractate America, anti-immigrant rhetoric from New York newspapers. Roman-age rabbis responded to claims about the protagonist of the Book of Joshua, “Joshua the Robber” as per a North African inscription early Byzantine Procopius of Caesarea alleged to have seen.

This book follows the origins of the Kedushta, a sequence of poems that leads up to the epitome of Jewish prayer, the Kedusha or Sanctus. It tracks back the earliest forms of prayer in late antiquity and by doing so defines the main characteristics of this genre, both from the standpoint of Rhetoric and poetics. This genre draws from Midrash and Mysticism- adjacent literary forms that influence liturgical poetry. How has such an enigmatic and complex liturgical genre survived the twists and turns of history and is recited to this day, for over 1500 years? The answer to this question pertains to both form and content. When analyzing form, we address rhyme, alphabetical acrostics, and different poetic forms. Those all have a specific rhetorical function in determining the structure of the poem, pushing it forward, and musically aligning the different segments. The form cannot be detached from narratology, referencing early midrash and mysticism. In addition, the emotional approach of the private prayer can express one's existential pain as part of an oppressed community. We can follow the composition of the prayer book for each community over the ages, through the first millennium, starting with Geniza fragments to the European prayer books. Finally, these poems use of sophisticated etymology, correlation by sound, leads to innovative Medieval interpretation of the Torah. It seems that the combination of a public recitation, simulating a divine choir, the musicality of the text and emotional depth all contributed to this eternal poetic genre to penetrate cross cutting traditions of prayer throughout the ages.

This never-before-published document demonstrates that Mather fully participated in the European debate as he disseminated his new ideas from his Boston pulpit and in his numerous publications.

The Temple eclipsed in its splendor and importance all other institutions of the Jews, both in the Land of Israel and in the Diaspora. It was the center of religious and national life; a goal of pilgrimage. Already in the 19th century,'The Quest for the Temple'had spread beyond the limited circles of Jewish commentators, becoming an interest also of Christian scholars. The Dead Sea Scrolls, especially the Temple Scroll, first published in 1977, brought new source materials pertaining to the pre-Herodian Temple to the fore. Some water cisterns still extant under the upper platform of the present Muslim compound are hiding a telling story, left unnoticed so far. Its unravelling in an interdisciplinary approach, an attentive re-reading of all available literary sources, and a re-evaluation of the said archaeological remains, lie at the core of the studies presented here.

Das Handbuch Alttestamentliche Anthropologie (HAA), das 15 Personenartikel, 150 Begriffsartikel und 15 Konzeptionsartikel enthält, macht es sich zur Aufgabe, den gegenwärtigen Forschungsstand zusammenzufassen, durch neue Perspektiven und interdisziplinäre Akzente weiterzuführen und in der kompakten Form eines Handbuchs den interessierten Leserinnen und Lesern zugänglich zu machen.

Die Studie profiliert den westlichen Mittelmeerraum als jüdische Diasporalandschaft eigener Prägung. Der Westen war bis zur Rezeption des rabbinischen Judentums im Hochmittelalter keine Leerstelle. Archäologische und epigraphische Zeugnisse in griechischer und lateinischer, nur zum geringen Teil auch in hebräischer Schrift belegen das eindrücklich. Dem können nun Stücke eines Corpus lateinischer Texte sehr unterschiedlicher Gattungen zur Seite gestellt werden, die infolge der späteren Hebraisierung der Schriftkultur der westlichen Juden nur aus kirchlicher Überlieferung erhalten sind. Sie bergen keinerlei christliche Inhalte und waren Autoren des 9. Jahrhunderts als jüdische Texte bekannt. Damit stellt das Buch die ältere Kulturgeschichte der Diaspora auf eine neue Grundlage und bietet Einsichten zu Fragen nach Selbstverständnissen, Selbstbehauptungen und kultureller Diversität sowie Transformationen in pluralen Gesellschaften.
