Classical Pentateuch research mainly dealt with the books of Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy and it is only in recent decades that the literary and theological meanings of Moses'fourth book has been rediscovered. In this volume, Christian Frevel lets the interplay between narrative and legislative material - which is often not understood - emerge into new light, examining the texts of the Book of Numbers as inner-biblical interpretations and tradition-bound innovations. Cloaked in the Israelites'40-year long sojourn in the desert, the Book of Numbers presents a tightly-woven fabric of texts which reflect the social and cultic orders, discuss questions of leadership and explore the meaning of the Promised Land to Israel's existence. The Book of Numbers is characterized in its entirety by transformations: for example, the exodus generation becomes the desert generation and leadership is transferred from Moses to Joshua, from Aaron to Eleazar. Important innovations such as the hierarchical organization of the cult, including the role of the Levites or the hereditary law concerning daughters, are cultivated within these transformations. The people's time in the desert (re)form their social frameworks and renders them sustainable for the existence in the Promised Land. Important themes such as community and cult organization, the enduring election of the Israelites, the meaning of the Promised Land for the collective identity, questions of hierarchical leadership and democratic participation, of collective guilt and individual liability, along with many other aspects, are dealt with in the texts. Without the literary traditions of the Book of Numbers, which were mostly set down around the 5th-4th centuries BCE, the formation of the Pentateuch as Torah would not have been conceivable. The studies of this volume reveal the thematic diversity of the book against a backdrop of its literary creation within the Penta- and Hexateuch.

A better understanding of this central chapter deepens our comprehension of the book as a whole.

Nearing thirty-five years ago, E. P. Sanders famously stated that the center of thought within Paul's theology is participatory in nature - which, of course, caused no small debate within broad strands of Pauline scholarship. Sanders also suggested that we have no modern conception of what this thought might mean for us today. These two axioms of Sanders loosely organize the essays in this volume which seek to explore the complex notions of union and participation within Pauline theology through exegesis, highlights in reception history, and theological reflection. This collection of essays aims at teasing out the complex web of meaning conveyed through Paul's theological vision of union and participation - both in their relationship and in their distinction with one another. Taken as a whole, this edited volume constitutes a multi-disciplinary reflection and exploration of Paul's theological vision of participation and union. But it is precisely as a multi-disciplinary exploration that this volume hopes to chart new ground and make new connections within Pauline thought with the hope that further research might contest and/or clarify its findings.

Zur Auslegung von biblischen Erzähltexten greift die Exegese zunehmend auf literaturwissenschaftliche Methoden zurück, insbesondere auf die Narratologie. Aufgrund der verschiedenen Ansätze und Terminologien ist die Forschungslage jedoch nur schwer zu überblicken. Sönke Finnern gibt daher eine systematische Einführung in den interdisziplinären Forschungsstand zur Narratologie und entwickelt eine umfassende, detaillierte Methode zur Analyse von Erzählungen. Umwelt (Setting), Handlung, Figuren, Perspektive und Rezeption einer Erzählung behandelt er durchgängig aus der Sicht der'kognitiven Wende'. Der kognitive Ansatz ('Wie soll der Rezipient die Erzählung wahrnehmen?') ermöglicht dabei die Einbindung historisch-kritischer Methodenschritte. Die erarbeiteten Beschreibungskategorien werden am Beispiel von Matthäus 28 diskutiert. Die Studie mündet in einen Vorschlag zur Neuordnung der exegetischen - und allgemein textwissenschaftlichen - Methoden.

In pursuit of the oneness of scripture's scope, Brevard Childs (1923-2007) ranged across the Christian Bible, writing Introductions to the Old and New Testaments before attempting a landmark Biblical Theology of the same. For him the canon is a christological rule of faith, though perceiving the'family resemblance'in its historic formation and impress in the life of the church as well as, mysteriously, the synagogue, is always a great struggle. Yet Childs'argument for final form exegesis rose out of his form-critical training: Hermann Gunkel is a crucial antecedent. Childs'work has been much discussed, and in the wake of James Barr's criticism much misunderstood. Driver gives its total profile for the first time, from its background and controversy to its later development, analyzing all published titles and filling out this record with a number of previously unseen letters and papers.

Für die Entstehung christlicher Identität bildet die Bibel aus Altem und Neuem Testament ein wichtiges Fundament. Das zeigt etwa die Rezeption einzelner Texte, wie z.B. auch die der Stephanusperikope Apg 6,1-8,3. Aus ihr wird zum einen die Verehrung der Gestalt des Stephanus als erster christlicher Märtyrer abgeleitet, zum anderen wird sie als Paradigma für die Überlegenheit des Christentums über das Judentum verstanden. Inwiefern sind diese Rezeptionsschwerpunkte vom Text der Stephanusepisode abgedeckt? Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, wird hier auf der Basis von Überlegungen zur Gesamtstruktur des biblischen Kanons im Dialog mit geschichtstheoretischen Ansätzen zur identitätsstiftenden Funktion von Geschichte der Text der Stephanusepisode in seinen biblischen Kontexten betrachtet. Dementsprechend wird die leitende Frage'Wie funktioniert der Text Apg 6,1-8,3 als Erzählung innerhalb der christlichen Bibel aus Altem und Neuem Testament?'gestellt und mit Teilfragen nach Darstellung und Funktion der Gestalt des Stephanus sowie nach dem durch den Text vermittelten Bild der Geschichte Israels verbunden. So erfolgt vor dem Hintergrund einer kanonisch-intertextuellen Exegese der Stephanusepisode eine Auseinandersetzung mit der durchaus ambivalenten Rezeption dieses Textes. Dabei werden außerdem Überlegungen über einen Zusammenhang von Reflexionen der Geschichte Israels, die in biblischen Texten enthalten sind, und christlicher Identität angestellt.

Das Thomasevangelium erzählt nicht das Leben Jesu, sondern präsentiert sich als lose Sammlung von Worten aus seinem Munde. Die einzelnen Sprüche begegnen darin als isolierte Texte ohne den nötigen Kontext, an dem sich die Deutung einzelner Logien kontrollieren ließe. Um den Text dennoch zu entschlüsseln, wurden in neuerer Zeit verstärkt Ansätze für eine Kompositions- und Redaktionsgeschichte des Thomasevangeliums entwickelt. Dabei wurde jedoch vernachlässigt, dass wir von einer ganzen Reihe von Thomaslogien zwei Fassungen besitzen, die sich zum Teil erheblich voneinander unterscheiden. Wilfried Eisele untersucht diese Logien und nimmt dabei den koptischen Text aus Nag Hammadi und die griechischen Fragmente aus Oxyrhynchos als eigenständige Textformen ernst. Daraus ergeben sich interessante Einblicke in die Strukturen der Text- und Überlieferungsgeschichte des Thomasevangeliums.

Simon Lee examines Jesus'transfiguration story found in the narrative account of Mark, tracing the development of its multiple readings through the first two centuries of the Christian era. The transfiguration story is especially interesting for the study of early Christianity, since the story reveals Jesus'divine glory in his lifetime. This study pays special attention to texts in which Peter is described as being the main witness to the event - the Synoptic Gospels, 2 Peter, Apocalypse of Peter and Acts of Peter. It also analyzes 2 Corinthians 3, where Paul explains believers'transformation on the basis of the comparison between Jesus'glory and Moses'glory. In comparing Paul's account with that of Mark, this study shows that there are some common theological patterns or ideas behind their accounts and that both inherited certain views from early Jesus traditions.
