La Maison de Dieu est un thème aussi riche qu'important. Le présent volume s'emploie à en éclairer différentes facettes essentiellement dans les écrits bibliques et parabibliques, mais aussi chez des auteurs juifs et chrétiens de l'Antiquité et, au-delà, chez les Réformateurs. L'approche est résolument ouverte. C'est ainsi qu'une place est réservée au Coran. Recours est fait notamment, outre à l'exégèse, à l'archéologie, pour aborder le thème, faire apparaîre, sur les plans historique et théologique, les interprétations dont il a fait l'objet et montrer les attentes qu'il a suscitées et qu'il continue de faire naître, dans des milieux juifs et chrétiens, jusqu'à nos jours. Das Haus Gottes ist ein reichhaltiges und wichtiges Thema. Der vorliegende Band versucht, verschiedene Facetten dieses Themas zu beleuchten, vor allem in biblischen und parabiblischen Schriften, aber auch bei jüdischen und christlichen Autoren der Antike und darüber hinaus bei den Reformatoren. Die Herangehensweise ist dezidiert offen. So findet auch der Koran einen Platz. Neben der Exegese wird die Archäologie herangezogen, um sich dem Thema zu nähern, die historischen und theologischen Interpretationen aufzuzeigen, deren Gegenstand es war, und um die Erwartungen aufzuzeigen, die es in jüdischen und christlichen Kreisen bis heute geweckt hat und weiter weckt.

Die Frage nach'Bach unter den Theologen'wird durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch verfolgt: von den theologischen Prägungen und Zeitgenossen Bachs über die Frage nach Vergessen und Wiederentdecken um 1800 bis hin zu der monumentalen Bach-Monographie Albert Schweitzers. Sie läuft zu auf die Frage nach dem gegenwärtigen Verhältnis der Theologie zu Bach und jenes von Bach zur Theologie. Der vorliegende Band versammelt die acht Beiträge des theologischen Symposiums, das im Rahmen des 93. Bachfestes der Neuen Bachgesellschaft 2018 mit dem Thema'Bach bearbeitet'in Tübingen stattfand. Der Umgang mit Bach ist, so wird in diesen Beiträgen deutlich, tief in theologische und kulturelle Entwicklungen eingebettet - und Bach bleibt immer mehr als ein Stück kulturelle Erinnerung: Er war und ist Herausforderung und Anregung.

Der vorliegende Sammelband untersucht die Konzepte, Methoden und Inhalte der Auslegung autoritativer religiöser Texte in Antike und Mittelalter. Diese Texte sind Ausgangs- und Ansatzpunkte in Unterweisungen, die zur Orientierung und Identitätsbildung dienen, dem Einzelnen ebenso wie Gemeinschaften und Gesellschaften. Die Beiträge im vorliegenden Band befassen sich mit dem kulturellen Kontext der christlichen Gemeinde in Korinth im 1. Jh. n. Chr. und mit der Reaktion des Paulus auf kontextuell bedingte Spannungen. Benjamin Schliesser macht eine Fülle neuerer Untersuchungen über das antike Korinth fruchtbar für die Frage nach der soziokulturellen Situation der Gemeinde. Harald Seubert macht plausibel, dass sich eine Reihe von polemischen Aussagen des Paulus in den Korintherbriefen auf Phänomene beziehen, welche enge Parallelen mit der Zweiten Sophistik aufweisen. Die Septuaginta ist ein thematisch weit gefächertes Corpus einer Vielfalt an Übersetzungen und eigenständiger Schriften. In den Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes werden zentrale Themen der Septuaginta-Schriften ebenso behandelt wie einzelne Manuskripte und Grundfragen der Septuagintaforschung. Darüber hinaus werden Linien der Rezeptionsgeschichte ausgezogen.

Over the last decades, Eusebius has been the focus of a great deal of attention. New light has been shed both on his writings and on his personality, which has led to a welcome re-assessment of his significance. As a result, he is no longer perceived as a mere compiler but as a powerful author who largely contributed to the construction of the orthodox Church's triumphalism. This volume seeks to contribute to the ongoing re-evaluation of Eusebius as an active participant to the construction of late antique history, theology, and literature. The result is an interdisciplinary collection of articles by an international team of scholars who offer innovative papers on one of the most important late antique author.

David C. Parker is one of the world's foremost specialists in the study of the New Testament text and of Greek and Latin manuscripts. In addition to editions, monographs and more popular writings, he has published many articles on different aspects of textual criticism. This collection of essays presents the papers given at the Eighth International Orthodox-Western Symposium of New Testament Scholars in the Caraiman Monastery (Romania). The symposium was a project of the Eastern Europe Liaison Committee (EELC) of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. Main subject matters of the volume are images and stories of the human being according to the New Testament and church tradition. All topics are discussed from a'western'(Protestant and Roman-Catholic) exegetical perspective as well as from an eastern orthodox point of view. In addition, several seminar papers deal with anthropological texts and conceptions in Paul, the synoptic Gospels, and John as well as with Philo and extra-canonical writings. A particular section presents reports on biblical scholarship in Romania, past and present.

The book is a collection of papers – now up-dated – on the most important relics of Christianity: (a) the Veil of Manoppello, on which the face of Jesus of Nazareth alive is impressed; (b) the Shroud of Turin, on which the full body of Jesus dead is impressed. Nobody knows how the images were impressed 2000 years ago. The reader may not agree that they relate to Jesus of Nazareth – known to Christians as Jesus Christ – and that they are 2000 years old, just like biased scholars continue to deny, despite the overwhelming, largely documented proof found on the Shroud and now also on the Veil, which is scientifically examined here for the first time. Based on these papers, we dare to conclude that the man depicted in both relics is Jesus of Nazareth, who was born, very likely, on 6 January 1 AD and died on Good Friday 23 April 34 AD.

Following the volume Les Peres de l'Eglise et la science medicale de leur temps, published in 2005, the present work collects 9 papers presented at the international conference organised at Sorbonne University on 15 and 16 September 2016. Based on the examination of the original texts, the papers endeavour to study the links between the Christian authors and the ancient Greek medical texts from an interdisciplinary approach. Particular attention is paid to the use in Christian texts of quotations from medical literature, medical notions, and specialized lexicon. The papers also analyse and compare the medical vocabulary attested in different types of contemporaneous writings, both pagan and Christian, literary and documentary, to better understand the process of transmission and assimilation of Greek medical science by the Christian society in the first centuries AD.

The study of the growth of early Christian intellectual life is of perennial interest to scholars. This volume advances discussion by exploring ways in which Christian writers in the second century did not so much draw on Hellenistic intellectual traditions and models, as they were inevitably embedded in those traditions. The volume contains papers from a seminar in Rome in 2016 that explored the nature and activity of the emergent Christian intellectual between the late first century and the early third century. The papers show that Hellenistic scholarly cultures were the milieu within which Christian modes of thinking developed. At the same time the essays show how Christian thinkers made use of the cultures of which they were part in distinctive ways, adapting existing traditions because of Christian beliefs and needs. The figures studied include Papias from the early part of the second-century, Tatian, Irenaeus, and Clement of Alexandria from the later second century. One paper on Eusebius of Caesarea explores the Christian adaptation of Hellenistic scholarly methods of commentary. Christian figures are studied in the light of debates within Classics and Jewish studies.

The book sheds light on various chapters in the long history of Protestant-Jewish relations, from the Reformation to the present. Going beyond questions of antisemitism and religious animosity, it aims to disentangle some of the intricate perceptions, interpretations, and emotions that have characterized contacts between Protestantism and Judaism, and between Jews and Protestants. While some papers in the book address Luther's antisemitism and the NS-Zeit, most papers broaden the scope of the investigation: Protestant-Jewish theological encounters shaped not only antisemitism but also the Jewish Reform movement and Protestant philosemitic post-Holocaust theology; interactions between Jews and Protestants took place not only in the German lands but also in the wider Protestant universe; theology was crucial for the articulation of attitudes toward Jews, but music and philosophy were additional spheres of creativity that enabled the process of thinking through the relations between Judaism and Protestantism. By bringing together various contributions on these and other aspects, the book opens up directions for future research on this intricate topic, which bears both historical significance and evident relevance to our own time.

The Richard Baxter treatises are here catalogued for the first time with clear summaries of their content, affording rich opportunities for research.Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was among the most prominent English nonconformist divines. Baxter found common ground with the Puritans but sought unity among Protestants in general. A highly independent thinker, he had opinions - andoften expressed them - about every major controversy in England during his lifetime. He wrote over 140 published works, among them long, controversial discourses on doctrine but also polemical works against Quakers, Baptists andRoman Catholics, among others. Baxter found himself a peacemaker during the English Civil Wars: a chaplain for the parliamentary army, he also supported the restoration of the king. As a moderate, Baxter was a target for both extremes. He eventually registered himself as'a meer Nonconformist', breaking with the Church of England because of his opposition to its form of episcopacy. He suffered bouts of imprisonment for his religious views and conduct during the reigns of Charles II and James II. Dr Williams's Library, London contains most of Baxter's extant manuscripts, including several'volumes'of his unpublished'Treatises', numbering roughly 369 items in total. The volumes,ranging from the 1630s to 1690s, consist of tracts, disputations, sermons, exercises, letters, miscellaneous papers and drafts, some of which were later incorporated into Baxter's published autobiographical writings, ReliquiaeBaxterianae (1696). The treatises themselves, however, have been largely overlooked. Here, they are catalogued with clear summaries of their content, and they afford rich opportunities for research. This catalogue, the firstdetailed listing and description for 150 years, provides a physical description and a scholarly outline of each treatise. A comprehensive introduction sets these papers in context. ALAN ARGENT is Research Fellow at Dr Williams's Library, London and minister of Trinity Congregational Church, Brixton. On March 4, 1865, the day Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address, Reverend Doctor George Peck put the finishing touches on a collection of his sermons that he intended to send to the president. Although the politically moderate Peck had long opposed slavery, he, along with many other northern evangelicals, was not an abolitionist. During the Civil War he had come to support emancipation, but, like Lincoln, the conflict remained first and foremost about preserving the Union. Believing their devotion to the Union was an act of faithfulness to God first and the Founding Fathers second, Our Country explores how many northern white evangelical Protestants sacrificed racial justice on behalf of four million African-American slaves (and then ex-slaves) for the Union's persistence and continued flourishing as a Christian nation.By examining Civil War-era Protestantism in terms of the Union, author Grant Brodrecht adds to the understanding of northern motivation and the eventual'failure'of Reconstruction to provide a secure basis for African American's equal place in society. Complementing recent scholarship that gives primacy to the Union, Our Country contends that non-radical Protestants consistently subordinated concern for racial justice for what they perceived to be the greater good. Mainstream evangelicals did not enter Reconstruction with the primary aim of achieving racial justice. Rather they expected to see the emergence of a speedily restored, prosperous, and culturally homogenous Union, a Union strengthened by God through the defeat of secession and the removal of slavery as secession's cause.Brodrecht eloquently addresses this so-called “proprietary” regard for Christian America, considered within the context of crises surrounding the Union's existence and its nature from the Civil War to the 1880s. Including sources from major Protestant denominations, the book rests on a selection of sermons, denominational newspapers and journals, autobiographies, archival personal papers of several individuals, and the published and unpublished papers of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant. The author examines these sources as they address the period's evangelical sense of responsibility for America, while keyed to issues of national and presidential politics. Northern evangelicals'love of the Union arguably contributed to its preservation and the slaves'emancipation, but in subsuming the ex-slaves to their vision for Christian America, northern evangelicals contributed to a Reconstruction that failed to ensure the ex-slaves'full freedom and equality as Americans.

This volume contains the papers of a workshop on Jewish epigraphy in antiquity organized at Utrecht University in 1992. Among the participants were collaborators of the Cambridge Jewish Inscriptions Project and of the Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients project.Important aspects of ancient Jewish inscriptions are highlighted in the papers, like the connection between documentary and literary texts. Marcion of Sinope, as the vast output of books and papers about this second century teacher has proven since the times when he was alive and still until today, is one of the most known and debated Christian entrepreneurs of the new religious Jesus-movement, perhaps the one who was responsible for the self-denomination'Christianity'. In this volume papers have been collected that originated or were inspired by a workshop in 2014 at the Max-Weber-Kolleg, University of Erfurt, directed by Jan Bremmer, Jorg Rupke and Markus Vinzent.'Marcion of Sinope as Religious Entrepreneur'is not just a volume on Marcion's texts, but also on his role and his reception in the second century, particularly in the making of Christianity.

Diakonia Studies closes the account on John N. Collins's 40 years of involvement in groundbreaking linguistic research and argumentation concerning the nature and functioning of Christian ministry. Dispute has swirled around the Greek term diakonia for 50 years. Once seen as enshrining the New Testament value of loving Christian service-what Jerome Murphy-O'Connor called'one of the dogmas of New Testament scholarship'-the word was exposed by Dieter Georgi in 1964 as arguably meaning something quite different. In 1974 John N. Collins published his first paper on the issue, pointing to inadequacies in Georgi's brief account. Then in 1990 Collins published his exhaustive semantic survey, Diakonia: Re-interpreting the Ancient Sources. His re-interpretation was variously hailed as'devastating,''provocative,''unfashionable,'and'a scholarly avalanche whose conclusions are inescapable.'Since then, the book has stood at the center of'the Collins-Debate.'Meanwhile Collins's findings have been incorporated in the authoritative Danker Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament. Diakonia Studies examines, in a non-technical way (i.e., without appeal to particulars of Greek), the reasons why theologians need not only to review cherished readings of leading New Testament passages but also to reassess what some passages might really be saying about the nature and delivery of ministry. These third-millennium issues are the matter of the final papers in the volume, reminding churches of the ministry they have received and of their filed-away commitments to an ecumenically-charged ministry. Among the topics considered are ordained and lay ministries, the tension between office and charism, and prospects for deacons when a diakonia of loving service no longer defines their call.

What do we mean when we talk about'being Christian'in Late Antiquity? This volume brings together sixteen world-leading scholars of ancient Judaism, Christianity and, Greco-Roman culture and society to explore this question, in honour of the ground-breaking scholarship of Professor Gillian Clark. After an introduction to the volume's dedicatee and themes by Averil Cameron, the papers in Section I, `Being Christian through Reading, Writing and Hearing', analyse the roles that literary genre, writing, reading, hearing and the literature of the past played in the formation of what it meant to be Christian. The essays in Section II move on to explore how late antique Christians sought to create, maintain and represent Christian communities: communities that were both'textually created'and'enacted in living realities'. Finally in Section III,'The Particularities of Being Christian', the contributions examine what it was to be Christian from a number of different ways of representing oneself, each of which raises questions about certain kinds of'particularities', for example, gender, location, education and culture. Bringing together primary source material from the early Imperial period up to the seventh century AD and covering both the Eastern and Western Empires, the papers in this volume demonstrate that what it meant to be Christian cannot simply be taken for granted.'Being Christian'was part of a continual process of construction and negotiation, as individuals and Christian communities alike sought to relate themselves to existing traditions, social structures and identities, at the same time as questioning and critiquing the past(s) in their present.

Gathering the attention and excitement of American colonists from Boston to Charleston, the religious revival of the 1740s traditionally known as the First Great Awakening provided colonial newspaper printers with their first story of transcolonial importance. At the time of the Awakening, American newspapers had become a vital part of the colonial information network as each major city offered at least one weekly paper. Papers printed weekly reports on revivalist preaching, eye-witness accounts of revival meetings, shocking stories of improper ordinations and church separations, as well as numerous contributed letters praising or denouncing virtually every aspect of the Awakening. No other colonial event of the 1740s, including the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) and the Jacobite Rebellion (1745), came close to receiving as much newspaper coverage, making the First Great Awakening America's first “Big Story.”In The First Great Awakening in Colonial American Newspapers: A Shifting Story, Lisa Smith offers the first scholarly work to examine in detail the printed newspaper record of the revival. This comprehensive, in-depth examination of colonial newspapers over a ten-year period uncovers information on shifts in the presentation of the revival over time, specific differences in regional reporting, and significant transformations in the newspaper personae of popular revivalists such as George Whitefield and Gilbert Tennent. Using original newspaper excerpts and graphs revealing reporting trends, this book presents an engaging, detailed picture of how colonial newspaper printers covered the experience of the First Great Awakening.

This volume is a collection of historical and comparative essays, describing and analyzing Christian presence and progress in North-East Asia. The authors originate from China, Japan, Korea, Canada, the United States of America, and the Netherlands. The nineteen essays are a selection from the papers given at the Seventh International Conference of the North East Asia Council of Studies in History of Christianity (NEACSHC), held in Wuhan (China) in 2009. The volume has four parts: General, China, Japan, and Korea. The first part deals with the impact of Western interdenominationalism on the East and the future development of Christianity in China. The five papers on China cope with 19th and 20th century topics such as distribution of Christian literature, nationalism, modernization, Christian socialism, and Sino-theology. Comparisons with the situation in the other East-Asian countries are also made in the three papers on Japan, focusing on the beginning of Protestant mission work and Christian education. The final part, regarding Korea and consisting of four contributions, pays attention to recent developments in Bible translation, church planting, holiness mission, Korean diaspora Christianity, and the Korean War.

This volume is the first in a new series of editions of Coptic-language'magical'manuscripts from Egypt, written on papyrus, ostraca, parchment, and paper, and dating to between the fourth and twelfth centuries CE. Their texts attest to non-institutional rituals intended to bring about changes in the lives of those who used them – heal disease, curse enemies, bring about love or hatred, or see into the future. These manuscripts represent rich sources of information on daily life and lived religion of Egypt in the last centuries of Roman rule and the first centuries after the Arab conquest, giving us glimpses of the hopes and fears of people of this time, their conflicts and problems, and their vision of the human and superhuman worlds. This volume presents 37 new editions and descriptions of manuscripts, focusing on formularies or'handbooks', those texts containing instructions for the performance of rituals. Each of these is accompanied by a history of its acquisition, a material description, and presented with facing text and translations, tracings of accompanying images, and explanatory notes to aid in understanding the text.

This publication in three volumes originated in papers delivered at two conferences held in May 1988 at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies in Washington, DC. Like many other conferences organized that year in the United States, Europe, and the Soviet Union, they were convened to commemorate the millennium of the acceptance of Christianity in Rus'. This collection of essays throws light on the enormous, truly unique role that the Christian tradition has played throughout the centuries in shaping the nations that spring from Kievan Rus'—the Russians, Ukrainians, and Belorussians. This volume examines the way the Belgian historian of religions Franz Cumont (1868–1947) and his contemporaries conceived of early Christianity's relation to the ancient mystery cults. As the comparative study of religion rose to academic prominence in late 19th century Europe, this question provoked fiery debates, fuelling methodological, ideological, and religious divides between scholars of different scientific and personal backgrounds. Cumont was a worldwide authority in the scientific study of the religions orientales, but he expressed his opinion on their relation to Christianity only ambiguously. Yet, his publications deeply impacted the debates of his time because of the numerous similarities they revealed between Christian and pagan traditions. Written by specialists from various academic disciplines (e.g., history of religions, theology, New Testament studies), this collection of papers offers a much-needed study of how Cumont and other leading 19th century scholars discussed this theme. It also offers critical reflections on what is left of their ideas in present-day research on this most fascinating subject matter in the study of ancient religion.

The present volume contains a selection of papers read at the ninth international conference of the Leuven Centre for the Study of the Gospels which was held at Leuven 9-11 December 2019 and dealt with the study of sources in Graeco-Roman, Second Temple and early Christian literature. The purpose of the conference was to bring together specialists of source-critical studies in these areas to look for parallels, patterns, and of course also differences in the way written sources are identified, used to explain the compositional history of a work, reconstructed, and generally evaluated as basic material for authors to compose and redact new texts. The essays address three general fields of interest: methodological principles for working with sources; concrete ways of using sources; and hypothetical or fragmented sources. The last one is perhaps the most debated aspect and has led some scholars to abandon the approach as such. The heyday of source criticism seems long gone, at least in biblical studies, but like other methods and approaches, this one too has never completely disappeared from the radar. The hypothetical character of synoptic and other source-critical theories and the finesses of reconstructing an author's sources remain fascinating issues in which historical, literary, and social aspects come together to shed light on ancient compositional strategies and practices. It is to these issues that this volume hopes to contribute.

This first complete history of Dr Williams's Trust and Library, deriving from the will of the nonconformist minister Daniel Williams (c.1643-1716) reveals rare examples of private philanthropy and dissenting enterprise.The library contains the fullest collection of material relating to English Protestant Dissent. Opening in the City of London in 1730, it moved to Bloomsbury in the 1860s. Williams and his first trustees had a vision for Protestant Dissent which included maintaining connections with Protestants overseas. The charities espoused by the trust extended that vision by funding an Irish preacher, founding schools in Wales, sending missionaries to native Americans, and giving support to Harvard College. By the mid-eighteenth century, the trustees had embraced unitarian beliefs and had established several charities and enlarged the unique collection of books, manuscripts and portraits known as Dr Williams's Library. The manuscript and rare book collection offers material from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, with strengths in the early modern period, including the papers of Richard Baxter, Roger Morrice, and Owen Stockton. The eighteenth-century archive includes the correspondence of the scientist and theologian Joseph Priestley. The library also holds several collections of importance for women's history and English literature. The story of the trust and library reveals a rare example of private philanthropy over more than three centuries, and a case study in dissenting enterprise. The volume Church as Politeia comprises fifteen papers which were presented at a German-British Research Colloquium of the Becket Institute in Oxford. In these papers the political self-understanding of Christianity is analyzed in its historical development from various denominational perspectives. The authors of these contributions are theologians, lawyers, philosophers and historians from Germany and Great Britain.

The Early Church has produced a diversified and influential tradition of commenting on the Bible. The tradition is rich in content, in methods, and in the goals pursued. The present volume offers a selection of papers read at an international colloquium held in Leuven in December 2018. Basically, three guidelines were followed in selecting the material: language, representative authors, and the wish to cover various parts of the New Testament. The work of Heiko Oberman in breaking down the conventional barriers between the medieval and the modern has been a starting point for scholars focused on a variety of philosophical and theological questions. This volume is a collection of papers highlighting recent researches on Syriac Christianity in China and Central Asia. The topics range from artifacts to texts and their historical contexts, covering the period from the 7th to the 18th century. As the studies on Syriac Christianity in China and Central advance, focus has shifted from a general historical survey and textual translation to a more micro and meticulous study of specific concepts and terms and particular names of persons and places.

Some of the studies in this publication excavate lost or disappearing indigenous toponyms. Those researchers contribute in a very concrete way to the preservation of indigenous toponyms, and thereby also the associated cultural heritage. The other papers explore how place naming functions as a mechanism with which to create mental maps and exert socio-political power.

Ancient and medieval literature has bequeathed to us dialogues between Jews and Christians. Though there can be no doubt that polemical exchanges existed between individuals in the context of private discussions or formal debates, the exact relation of the dialogical texts and historical reality is sometimes unclear. In the case of ancient Christian dialogues, contradicting analyses have been put forward. Some scholars think they represent reliable documents about the real debates. Others contend that such texts are purely literary entities, and that their purpose was self-definition. Certainly no general theory can be adduced to account for all early Christian dialogical texts against the Jews. The present book, however, tries to evaluate both views with a series of contributions on a neglected late antique Greek dialogue, the Dialogue of Timothy and Aquila (6th-7th c. AD). For the sake of comparison, the second part includes papers on a medieval latin dialogical text, the Dialogus written by Peter Alfonsi (11th-12th c. AD). The last part gathers studies about the less documented other side: Jewish polemical texts against Christianity. The book is introduced by a historiographical survey by William Horbury.

Mathijs Lamberigts'long and prolific research career started with the study of the controversy between Julian of Aeclanum and Augustine of Hippo on the issues of human free will and divine grace. This research interest rapidly came to include all aspects of the turbulent life, the massive oeuvre, and the complex ideas of the doctor gratiae, imbedded in the historical, political, socio-economic, religious, ecclesial, and intellectual context of the fourth and fifth centuries. Driven by a deep respect for the original sources, and always well informed about the established scholarship, Lamberigts deployed a rigorous historical-critical method in his publications. The first nineteen contributions of the present volume reflect this first love for Augustinian studies. As illustrated by the cover image, taken from the famous sixteenth-century Leuven edition of Augustine's collected writings, Lamberigts'historical-critical study of Augustine stands within a rich and enduring Leuven tradition. The same old print expresses the gradual expansion of Lamberigts'research interests, which came to embrace Augustine's legacy in the fifteenth-seventeenth centuries. In fact at the end of the Middle Ages, Augustine and his doctrine of sin, grace, and free will found renewed interest, even becoming part of the ideological-religious foundations of Martin Luther - who was after all an Augustinian friar - and hence of the Reformation. All parties involved in the religious controversies of this period appealed to the doctor gratiae to justify their own position. Lamberigts has always shown a vivid interest in these developments, and especially in how Augustinian thinking became a doctrinal pillar of Leuven theology in the Early Modern Era. Consequently, part of Lamberigt's scholarly work has focused on figures such as Michael Baius and Cornelius Jansenius of Ypres, on movements such as Jansenism, as well as on the Jansenists'theological adversaries, the Jesuits. Eight essays of this volume evoke this particular period in church history. This collection of essays contains the papers given at the Sixth International East-West Symposium of New Testament Scholars in Belgrade, Serbia. The symposium was a project of the Eastern Europe Liaison Committee of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. Main subject matters of the volume are the Holy Spirit in New Testament writings (particularly Luke-Acts, the Gospel of John and Paul), the reception and interpretation of biblical texts about the Holy Spirit in patristic theology, ancient Christian liturgy and iconography, and reflection on the role of the Holy Spirit in church life.
