The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland contains more than 3,800 entries covering the majority of family names that are established and current in Ireland, both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. It establishes reliable and accurate explanations of historical origins (including etymologies) and provides variant spellings for each name as well as its geographical distribution, and, where relevant, genealogical and bibliographical notes for family names that have more than 100 bearers in the 1911 census of Ireland. Of particular value are the lists of early bearers of family names, extracted from sources ranging from the medieval period to the nineteenth century, providing for the first time, the evidence on which many surname explanations are based, as well as interesting personal names, locations and often occupations of potential family forbears. This unique Dictionary will be of the greatest interest not only to those interested in Irish history, students of the Irish language, genealogists, and geneticists, but also to the general public, both in Ireland and in the Irish diaspora in North America, Australia, and elsewhere.

The content of this series was culled from hundreds of articles that were originally published in'The New England Historical and Genealogical Register'on the English origins of New England families. It is interesting to note that almost all living Americans with colonial Yankee forebears descend from immigrants covered in this work. The articles vary in content, but they generally include genealogies or lists of birth records, marriage records, death records, land records, and wills.

Ship passenger lists are the delight of the genealogist for they provide the first record of an ancestor on American soil. Numerous passenger lists have appeared in articles in a wide variety of periodicals. This work is a collection of ninety-seven articles from some fifty periodicals, mostly totally unknown to the researcher. This collection gives access to material previously difficult to locate for no library in the country can claim to have every issue of every periodical in this compilation. Periodicals drawn on range from the obscure Pennsylvania Dutchman to the scholarly American Genealogist, from bi-weeklies to annuals, and, within the general time frame 1618-1878, the articles identify upwards of 27,500 emigrants, mainly English, Irish, Scottish, German, Swiss, French, Dutch, Norwegian, and Russian-German.This work does not include articles from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, or The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record.

This is the most complete collection of early Massachusetts marriages ever published, containing over 20,000 entries for the period 1643-1800. The marriages derive from records kept by the various county, city, and court clerks in compliance with Massachusetts law, and give the full name of the bride and groom and date and place of marriage. The book is divided into four sections covering: Worcester County; Plymouth County; Middlesex, Hampshire, Berkshire, and Bristol counties; and Plymouth County again, as transcribed from the first volume of the records of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas and an unnumbered volume of the records of the Court of General Sessions. This last section contains over 1,000 additional entries. Each section of the book is separately paginated and indexed, except for the last, which is arranged in chronological order.

Arrivals from the U.K. began to increase in the mid-1840's with the Irish Famine that led to very high mortality rates, rising prices and unemployment and a massive outflow of Irish population to the U.S. In the post-Famine period, England's industrial revolution progressed and emigration continued to grow between the prosperous 1850's and the mid-1890's. This series on Emigration from the United Kingdom to America concentrates on U.K. emigration in the period 1870-1897, listing migrants from the U.K. who arrived in New York. The original passenger lists transcribed by shipping agents and ship's officers and filed by all vessels entering U.S ports have been used in the preparation of Emigration from the United Kingdom to America. Presented in chronological order by each ship's date of arrival, these passenger lists provide the names of ships, ports of departure, and arrival and debarkation dates. The researcher can also locate data regarding a person's age, sex, and occupation, as well as village of origin and destination when reported. An important feature of Emigration from the United Kingdom to America is the extensive surname index of ships'passengers included in each volume. These indexes, containing approximately 3 million names for the period 1870-1897, will greatly facilitate the task of finding an ancestor's family name, especially when the exact date or port of arrival in the United States is unknown. In the compilation of this volume, David Dobson combed archives and libraries in Scotland, England, and Denmark to yield the first listing devoted to Scottish inhabitants of the West Indies for the period between 1707 and 1857. While the full impact of Scottish settlement in the West Indies has yet to be fully researched, Mr. Dobson has clearly broken new ground where immigration source material is concerned. Arranged alphabetically by surname, many of the entries in this volume were culled from Scottish newspapers like the Aberdeen Journal, in which notices would appear seeking to employ managers and servants. In all nearly 3,000 Scotsmen are identified by full name, island inhabited, date, and source of the information, and sometimes by occupation, parent(s) name(s), and education.

Based on a long series of will abstracts that appeared over a period of 45 years in'The New England Historical and Genealogical Register', this work encompasses what amounts to the first 30 years or so of the Suffolk County, Massachusetts, estate records (1640-1670). Altogether, the series refers to some 12,000 persons with regard to family relationships.

This present work is a consolidation of all the articles published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society's Committee on English and Foreign Research in the pages of its journal, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Treating the immigrant origins of perhaps 1,000 or more families, 200 or so in the most thoroughly documented monographs ever published, these articles are now among the most sought after of the many thousands of Register articles. Almost all living Americans with colonial Yankee forebears descend from several of the 1,000 immigrants and from one or more of the 200 immigrants, treated here.

This three-volume work represents a complete collection of articles from'The New England Historical and Genealogical Register'devoted exclusively to Mayflower passengers and their progeny. The three encyclopedic volumes contain hundreds of articles on families and individuals of Mayflower descent and comprise not only the largest body of such materials in print but the most comprehensive collection of writings of the foremost Mayflower scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1989 the esteemed genealogist Col. Leonard H. Smith Jr., with the consent of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, published a limited edition reprint of the series from'The Mayflower Descendant'and added a comprehensive, full-name index. In 1899 the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Massachusetts inaugurated a long-running series of transcriptions of the birth, marriage and death records of the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts in its quarterly,'The Mayflower Descendant.'

The original 1790 enumerations covered the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, not all the schedules have survived, the returns for the states of Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia having been lost or destroyed, possibly when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812, though there seems to be no proof for this. For Virginia, taxpayer lists made in the years 1782-1785 have been reconstructed as replacements for the original returns.

This is a compilation of deeds and probate records extracted and transcribed from the renowned Bowman Files. The several thousand deed abstracts provide such information as name, occupation, and residence; date, sale, price, acreage, and location of the land; and witnesses and date of recording. The will abstracts include bequests to friends and family, descriptions of personal real estate, and names of witnesses. The probate records associated with the wills are a goldmine of genealogical information, as they name heirs and their relationship to the deceased, minor children, guardians, and debtors. Researchers will also appreciate that the wills and deeds herein pertain to a number of non-Mayflower families whose lines originate in the counties of Plymouth, Bristol, or Middlesex, Massachusetts.

The records of the First Church of Wareham are a crucial source of information for Mayflower ancestry, and they comprise the basis for this book. The surviving church records are a mixture of births, marriages, deaths, memberships, and other records. In all, the Smiths refer to nearly 6,000 early settlers of Wareham, whose names are accessible to the researcher in the index at the back of the volume.
