Originally published in 1918, this landmark collection of essays by the father of psychoanalysis represents one of Freud's most penetrating attempts to decipher the mysteries of human behavior. Its focus is the conflict between primitive feelings and the demands of civilization, i.e., the struggle to reconcile unconscious desires with socially acceptable behavior. Totemism involves the belief in a sacred relationship between an object (totem) and a human kinship group. Men and women bearing the same totem are prohibited from marrying each other, this being a form of incest taboo. Freud identifies a strong unconscious inclination as the basis of taboo, and he attempts to define its source by tracing the earliest appearance in childhood development of totemism. After an examination of the incest taboo in primitive societies around the world, Freud discusses taboo and the ambivalence of emotions; animism, magic, and the omnipotence of thought; and the infantile recurrence of totemism.

When it comes to the world of psychiatry, one name has long stood out among the rest. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist who came to be known as the Father of Psychoanalysis. En Tótem y tabú (1913), Freud trata de aplicar el método del psicoanálisis a un estudio antropológico en el que pone en conexión el origen del totemismo y la exogamia en las sociedades primitivas, ya que observa un desarrollo psicológico similar en las primeras sociedades humanas, las sociedades salvajes contemporáneas y los pacientes neuróticos. Desde sempre o sentimento de medo (Angst) foi objeto da observação freudiana. Porém, seriam necessários a experiência traumática da Primeira Guerra Mundial e o tratamento de neuróticos de guerra para a criação dos conceitos de impulso de vida e impulso de morte (em'Além do princípio de prazer', de 1920), e do medo como uma angústia preparatória e protetora contra um trauma vivido. Torment Me, But Don't Abandon Me: Psychoanalysis of the Severe Neuroses in a New Key offers analysts and psychodynamic therapists an innovative way of understanding the theoretical intersection of masochism, perversion, shame, guilt, narcissism substance abuse. This constellation of psychopathology frequently is seen in clinical practice and often proves to be a difficult personality organization to treat. These systems of defences are pathological organisations of the personality: John Steiner describes them as'psychic retreats', into which the patient can withdraw to avoid contact both with the analyst and with reality.To provide a background to these original and controversial concepts, the author builds on more established ideas such as Klein's distinction between the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, and briefly reviews previous work on pathological organizations of the personality.
